- [00:00:00.743](gentle upbeat music)
- [00:00:16.910]Hello everyone, my name is Jake Schmitt.
- [00:00:18.590]I am a senior chemistry major from Hartland, Wisconsin.
- [00:00:21.960]When I first started applying to college,
- [00:00:23.380]the idea of being an out-of-state student
- [00:00:24.940]was quite nerve-wracking.
- [00:00:26.570]It takes a lot of willpower and courage
- [00:00:28.070]to leave an area of comfort
- [00:00:29.400]and to throw yourself out into the world.
- [00:00:31.600]Personally, there were many fears I had
- [00:00:33.150]when I ultimately decided to attend
- [00:00:35.050]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:37.260]What if I didn't enjoy it
- [00:00:38.230]and how will I make friends?
- [00:00:40.170]As questions like these swirled in my head,
- [00:00:41.710]it felt as if I made the incorrect decision.
- [00:00:44.330]But looking back on it,
- [00:00:45.290]deciding to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:47.560]has been one of the greatest choices I've made,
- [00:00:49.360]as it's impacted my life in many unexpected ways.
- [00:00:52.960]When I first got to campus,
- [00:00:54.110]I had gotten this feeling of new beginnings, a fresh start.
- [00:00:57.340]There were moments in the past I had wanted to leave behind
- [00:00:59.830]and having a new place to call home
- [00:01:01.370]was a great opportunity for me to do this.
- [00:01:04.270]Besides a fresh start, it was comforting
- [00:01:05.990]to see I wasn't the only one
- [00:01:07.150]who had these fears and anxieties.
- [00:01:09.450]Throughout my residence hall and the community around me,
- [00:01:12.180]I had seen that I wasn't the only one trying
- [00:01:14.070]to create a new home.
- [00:01:15.890]With all of us sharing these same feelings,
- [00:01:17.680]and made it that much easier
- [00:01:18.870]for us to create the new home together.
- [00:01:21.560]And lastly, being an out-of-state student has exposed me
- [00:01:24.240]to opportunities I would have never imagined.
- [00:01:26.990]Through both prosperity and the hardships alike,
- [00:01:29.260]I've been given many opportunities to grow
- [00:01:31.230]as an individual and it's made all the difference.
- [00:01:34.630]So, as I said before,
- [00:01:36.220]being an out-of-state student can look nerve-wracking.
- [00:01:38.960]It's scary to take the shot in the dark
- [00:01:40.790]and to attend a school far away from home.
- [00:01:43.830]But with enough courage,
- [00:01:44.900]I promise it will all work out in the end,
- [00:01:47.060]just like it did for me.
- [00:01:48.389](upbeat music)
