- [00:00:16.663]My name's Peyton Taylor, and I'm from Raymond, Nebraska
- [00:00:18.910]and I'm gonna be a junior next fall at UNL.
- [00:00:21.350]And I'm majoring in Psychology
- [00:00:22.850]and minoring in Aerospace Studies
- [00:00:24.320]and National Security Studies.
- [00:00:26.010]So during my time here at UNL,
- [00:00:27.350]I've been involved in Air Force ROTC,
- [00:00:29.580]which stands for the Reserve Officer Training Corps.
- [00:00:32.220]And this program is offered at over a thousand colleges
- [00:00:35.250]and universities across the nation.
- [00:00:37.460]And UNL is actually home to Air Force ROTC Detachment 465
- [00:00:41.830]as well as Naval and Marine Corps, ROTC and Army ROTC.
- [00:00:46.180]I am currently taking the four-year program
- [00:00:48.850]route to eventually graduate from UNL
- [00:00:51.930]and then commission into the world's greatest Air Force.
- [00:00:55.070]In high school, I always had a pretty great group of friends
- [00:00:57.700]but something always fell off
- [00:00:58.920]and I wasn't quite sure what it was
- [00:01:00.530]until I joined Air Force ROTC here at UNL.
- [00:01:03.560]ROTC has really helped me develop as an individual
- [00:01:06.300]in many different aspects of my life
- [00:01:07.880]and I owe that growth solely to this program.
- [00:01:10.310]I learned not only how to be
- [00:01:11.940]a person who gives and takes orders,
- [00:01:14.010]what mutual respect is like in a professional level,
- [00:01:17.180]and I've had opportunities
- [00:01:18.670]that I will cherish for a lifetime.
- [00:01:20.270]As well as professional relationships
- [00:01:22.010]and personal friendships that I've created
- [00:01:24.260]with other like-minded, motivated, determined individuals
- [00:01:27.720]who also wanna serve their country
- [00:01:29.150]and serve a cause that's greater than ourselves.
- [00:01:31.960]Being in ROTC comes with a very different lifestyle
- [00:01:34.490]and a lot of different responsibilities for college kids,
- [00:01:36.860]but skills and knowledge that have prepared me extensively
- [00:01:39.050]for life after college.
- [00:01:40.890]My first year in the program,
- [00:01:41.980]I began to see that ROTC was something much greater
- [00:01:44.190]than just some classes that students would take
- [00:01:46.070]and become officers right out of undergrad
- [00:01:48.630]and wear a uniform once a week on Thursdays.
- [00:01:51.480]But I began to see that the courses had meaning and purpose
- [00:01:53.710]far beyond my time here at the university.
- [00:01:56.210]There will never be enough words to truly explain
- [00:01:58.280]how grateful I am for this program
- [00:02:00.530]and all the people that I've met along the way
- [00:02:02.170]because of it.
- [00:02:03.003]If there is anything that I hope that you gained from this,
- [00:02:05.200]it would be to find your why.
- [00:02:06.380]As cheesy as it sounds,
- [00:02:07.920]whatever drives you, whatever you're passionate about,
- [00:02:10.170]whatever makes you feel like your best self,
- [00:02:11.800]cling to that and cling your why.
- [00:02:13.790]My why is Air Force ROTC,
- [00:02:15.650]commissioning into the Air Force after graduation
- [00:02:18.250]and serving my country.
- [00:02:19.760]Knowing what my why has been, has helped me significantly
- [00:02:22.570]in all that I've done at the university
- [00:02:24.490]and helped me stay motivated throughout it all.
