- [00:00:10.610]your experience here at Nebraska.
- [00:00:12.860]We will watch videos and activities
- [00:00:14.410]that will share our experience and advice,
- [00:00:16.680]as well as give you the space to discuss these topics
- [00:00:19.490]based on your own life.
- [00:00:20.860]We'll go through five different topics
- [00:00:22.480]that we have found to be essential for success in college.
- [00:00:25.500]Purpose, ownership, wellbeing,
- [00:00:28.230]engagement, and relationships.
- [00:00:30.840]Together, these five stand for Husker Student POWER.
- [00:00:35.115](thunder crushes)
- [00:00:37.620]That was powerful.
- [00:00:39.560]Let's start with purpose.
- [00:00:41.030]Purpose is essentially why you wanna be here
- [00:00:43.700]and what you hope to accomplish at Nebraska
- [00:00:46.140]academically or personally.
- [00:00:48.550]Trust us,
- [00:00:49.383]you don't have to have your purpose figured out right now
- [00:00:52.000]and purpose looks different for everyone.
- [00:00:54.780]It's okay to be unsure about your purpose,
- [00:00:57.490]change your purpose,
- [00:00:58.700]and there are limitless ways to find it.
- [00:01:00.950]No matter what your purpose looks like right now,
- [00:01:03.410]UNL will give you the opportunity to.
- [00:01:05.690]Recognize your purpose.
- [00:01:07.470]Re-imagine your purpose.
- [00:01:09.300]Explore your purpose.
- [00:01:11.120]Expand your purpose.
- [00:01:12.970]Coming into my first year,
- [00:01:14.120]I knew exactly what I wanted to do.
- [00:01:15.830]I had my major chosen and my dream career picked out.
- [00:01:18.690]As a criminology and criminal justice student,
- [00:01:20.380]I knew how to gather all the information that I needed
- [00:01:22.210]to begin my journey as an immigration attorney.
- [00:01:24.920]I come from a family of immigrants
- [00:01:26.310]and as a first-generation student,
- [00:01:27.870]their support was a very important factor
- [00:01:29.440]in finding and continuing to pursue my purpose.
- [00:01:32.030]Starting college as an engineering major,
- [00:01:33.810]I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to be
- [00:01:36.220]and what I wanted to do.
- [00:01:37.690]It wasn't until I got involved on campus,
- [00:01:39.950]that I started to realize that engineering
- [00:01:42.120]wasn't what I thought it was.
- [00:01:43.460]I had to completely reevaluate and re-imagine
- [00:01:46.440]what it was I wanted to do with my future career
- [00:01:48.920]and my life.
- [00:01:51.500]I relied on my friends, my advisor,
- [00:01:53.780]and my current courses
- [00:01:55.240]before I found my true purpose
- [00:01:56.820]here at the biochemistry department at UNL.
- [00:01:59.500]Just remember, that it's never too late
- [00:02:01.690]to change your direction
- [00:02:02.970]and re-imagine what your purpose can be.
- [00:02:05.440]When I came to UNL as a pre-health student,
- [00:02:07.250]I was undeclared.
- [00:02:08.130]I had no idea how to choose my major
- [00:02:10.400]or how to achieve my professional goals.
- [00:02:12.550]However, through the university Honors Program
- [00:02:14.870]and the undergraduate creative activities
- [00:02:16.680]and research experience, also known as UCARE,
- [00:02:19.230]I got to try research and do new things in the university.
- [00:02:23.130]I found that I wanted to learn and grow
- [00:02:24.930]through multiple sources,
- [00:02:26.040]not just by being a pre-health student.
- [00:02:28.520]Through these activities,
- [00:02:29.770]I got to fulfill my passions and explore my major
- [00:02:32.630]so that I could find my ultimate career goal
- [00:02:34.410]which is to become a dentist.
- [00:02:36.130]At the start of my freshman year,
- [00:02:37.380]I wasn't involved a lot on campus.
- [00:02:39.160]I was focused on school and getting the grades.
- [00:02:41.410]As one might assume this wasn't very fulfilling.
- [00:02:44.200]I needed to find a purpose that connected to my major
- [00:02:46.550]special education, but got me outside of the classroom.
- [00:02:49.470]To do this, myself and a few friends
- [00:02:51.600]connected with campus recreation and Special Olympics
- [00:02:54.660]to create UNL Unified, an inclusive RSO here on campus.
- [00:02:58.680]Maybe have a path you wanna follow
- [00:03:00.270]or maybe you really don't know
- [00:03:01.430]what your path will look like right now.
- [00:03:03.180]Regardless of where you stand,
- [00:03:04.330]keep in mind the things that are truly important to you
- [00:03:06.780]and use that to drive you in the direction you wanna go.
- [00:03:09.840]You've heard a little bit about
- [00:03:10.810]how we found our purpose on campus.
- [00:03:12.700]Now it's time to explore yours.
- [00:03:15.186](upbeat music)
