- [00:00:01.270]Hopefully the conversations that you've had
- [00:00:02.810]in this activity have shown you
- [00:00:04.170]that you share some of the same goals and experiences.
- [00:00:07.090]However, even though you share some of the same attributes,
- [00:00:09.680]you have your own unique purpose.
- [00:00:12.130]We want to remind you that your journey is your own
- [00:00:14.117]and to trust that you can find your purpose here on campus.
- [00:00:17.760]Now that you know a little bit about purpose,
- [00:00:19.426]let's talk about the O in Husker POWER, Ownership.
- [00:00:23.270]You'll have the opportunity to engage
- [00:00:24.870]in conversations and experiences
- [00:00:26.610]with those whose opinions, interests,
- [00:00:29.010]personal lifestyles differ from your own.
- [00:00:31.260]Each person at Nebraska has their own personal story
- [00:00:33.870]and takes the ownership of their lifestyle
- [00:00:36.610]in their own way.
- [00:00:37.489]You'll see how a few of us do that here.
- [00:00:40.220]Coming to UNL, I didn't really think that I was going
- [00:00:42.090]to experience a lot of diversity here on campus.
- [00:00:44.320]However, I was very wrong.
- [00:00:46.010]I've been surrounded by people with different interests,
- [00:00:48.210]hobbies, backgrounds, and lifestyles.
- [00:00:51.260]I've done this by being involved
- [00:00:52.610]in Air Force ROTC, the Greek community here on campus
- [00:00:55.930]and interacting with faculty and staff.
- [00:00:58.290]If you thought that by coming to UNL it was going
- [00:01:00.160]to be just like high school,
- [00:01:01.320]think again.
- [00:01:02.260]My freshman year roommate
- [00:01:03.380]and I were polar opposites.
- [00:01:04.970]I was Nebraska, born and raised in state.
- [00:01:08.220]She was a military child from all over the country.
- [00:01:11.780]I was not religious, she was a member
- [00:01:13.719]of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- [00:01:17.170]I like to stay up late, she was in bed by 10:00 pm.
- [00:01:20.367]We were different in so many ways,
- [00:01:22.780]but we were able to be successful roommates
- [00:01:24.610]and friends because of our mutual respect
- [00:01:26.500]for one another.
- [00:01:27.643]I came to the College of Journalism
- [00:01:29.610]and Mass Communications
- [00:01:30.750]inexperienced and searching for my place.
- [00:01:33.130]But the further I progressed,
- [00:01:34.720]the clearer it became.
- [00:01:35.980]In 2018, NPR reported that women of color
- [00:01:38.810]represent only 7% of US print newsroom staff.
- [00:01:42.720]At the College of Journalism, I'm equipped
- [00:01:44.630]with the skills and opportunities
- [00:01:46.460]to overcome this, to bridge this gap.
- [00:01:48.920]I even took a course where we explored
- [00:01:50.670]what it's like being black in Lincoln.
- [00:01:52.690]And in this course, I felt seen and represented,
- [00:01:55.950]not only as a student journalist but as a woman of color.
- [00:01:59.620]Taking ownership of my identity helps drive my purpose.
- [00:02:03.940]I am a peer mentor for OASIS,
- [00:02:05.970]which stands for the Office
- [00:02:07.170]of Academic Success and Intercultural Services.
- [00:02:10.350]OASIS offers many different things
- [00:02:12.190]like cultural events, peer mentoring,
- [00:02:14.540]academic support and even a fun, safe place
- [00:02:17.860]to hang out in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.
- [00:02:20.870]Everyone can be involved with OASIS.
- [00:02:23.130]And even if you're not, there will be many opportunities
- [00:02:25.750]in your undergraduate experience
- [00:02:27.590]where you can share your story
- [00:02:29.330]and also learn from others
- [00:02:30.510]who are different than you.
- [00:02:32.030]Each of your stories is an important part
- [00:02:33.520]of the Husker community,
- [00:02:34.760]as are those of your future classmates.
- [00:02:37.010]Now that you've heard some of our stories,
- [00:02:38.820]it's time to get to know each other's.
