- [00:00:05.270]Engagement is essential
- [00:00:06.440]in order to get connected to campus,
- [00:00:08.110]contribute to the community
- [00:00:09.630]and gain experience for the future.
- [00:00:11.580]We hope you have gained some insight
- [00:00:12.770]on how you can find fulfilling and exciting opportunities
- [00:00:15.050]here at UNL.
- [00:00:16.310]We are not the last piece of the power puzzle,
- [00:00:18.500]relationships.
- [00:00:20.020]The idea of building relationships
- [00:00:21.530]as an out-of-state student was terrifying for me
- [00:00:23.960]and I didn't have an automatic built-in community
- [00:00:26.200]when I arrived here at UNL.
- [00:00:27.820]However, building relationships can happen anywhere.
- [00:00:31.290]I found my people because they had their door propped open
- [00:00:33.710]in our residence hall.
- [00:00:35.170]You won't be best friends with everyone you meet
- [00:00:37.180]and that's okay,
- [00:00:38.090]but some of them will become like a second family to you.
- [00:00:41.140]Claire for instance,
- [00:00:41.973]became friends with her freshman year roommate,
- [00:00:43.800]she found on the Roommate Finder.
- [00:00:45.600]In high school, I often made friends out of convenience.
- [00:00:48.520]Through my involvements in my sorority in the race school,
- [00:00:51.060]I've been able to meet people who become my role models
- [00:00:53.260]and my teachers.
- [00:00:54.440]College gives you the unique experience
- [00:00:56.040]of surrounding yourself with people you really admire.
- [00:00:58.440]Get excited about making meaningful connections
- [00:01:00.430]so it'll have a big impact on you as a person.
- [00:01:03.110]You can even consider attending RSOs like intermural sports.
- [00:01:06.450]Wyatt made great friends in the men's volleyball club.

- [00:01:12.240]When I first came to college,
- [00:01:13.660]I was unsure how to build relationships with my professors.
- [00:01:16.350]But one day after class, I stayed after
- [00:01:18.210]and asked my psychology professor a quick question.
- [00:01:20.710]Eventually, I started going into office hours to ask more.
- [00:01:23.630]These conversations turned into discussions about
- [00:01:25.680]psychology, my future plans and my career goals.
- [00:01:29.070]We still keep in touch today.
- [00:01:30.580]Similar to me, Luke found mentoring
- [00:01:32.590]in his trombone professor by attending office hours.
- [00:01:35.780]As a first-generation student,
- [00:01:37.150]who was the first in my family to go to college,
- [00:01:39.090]I thought I was gonna have to do college alone.
- [00:01:41.150]But then I met the Director for the CAST office
- [00:01:43.020]prior to my freshman year in the First Husker Program
- [00:01:45.580]and learned that college isn't a one person show.
- [00:01:47.530]She became one of my greatest sources of comfort and support
- [00:01:49.960]and is a role model whom I greatly look up to.
- [00:01:52.330]As you think about the importance
- [00:01:53.440]of bonding with other students,
- [00:01:54.620]don't forget there are staff members
- [00:01:55.970]who are here to support you too.
- [00:01:57.720]As you can see, professors at UNL
- [00:01:59.670]know how to create unique, individual bonds with students.
- [00:02:02.860]As we continue to learn more about the importance
- [00:02:04.660]of having strong relationships in college,
- [00:02:06.750]it is time for us to participate
- [00:02:08.110]in one more small group activity.
- [00:02:10.200]In your smaller groups, you will be coming up with skits
- [00:02:12.470]to share with the larger group.
- [00:02:13.950]Your NSC leader,
- [00:02:14.783]will provide you with more detailed instructions.
- [00:02:17.721](upbeat music)
