- [00:00:04.710]On a windy Nebraska morning,
- [00:00:06.390]a team of middle school and college students
- [00:00:08.700]prepares to launch a high altitude balloon.
- [00:00:12.070]They are the Big Red Satellite team
- [00:00:14.010]and they're designing and building a small space satellite
- [00:00:17.360]under the guidance of engineering professor, Karen Stelling.
- [00:00:20.472][Stelling] We actually just got selected by NASA
- [00:00:23.030]for this launch initiative where
- [00:00:26.440]I'm advising undergraduate team.
- [00:00:28.640]That's advising middle school and high school students.
- [00:00:31.810]And we're going to get to launch a 10 centimeter
- [00:00:34.920]cube satellite into space,
- [00:00:36.720]and it'll probably be launched from
- [00:00:38.550]the International Space Station.
- [00:00:40.357][Narrator] Before it can go into space.
- [00:00:42.270]The teams test satellite has to go up in the sky.
- [00:00:45.427][Stelling] We were preparing to launch our
- [00:00:47.840]high altitude balloon and because it was so windy,
- [00:00:50.600]the balloon ripped off.
- [00:00:53.180]So we had to get a new balloon and two bottles
- [00:00:57.000]of helium so that we could try it
- [00:00:59.250]for the launch again.
- [00:01:00.137][Narrator] Supervising complicated engineering projects
- [00:01:03.430]is nothing new to Stelling.
- [00:01:05.310]Before joining the faculty at Nebraska
- [00:01:07.330]she designed and oversaw construction
- [00:01:09.490]of enormous buildings around the world.
- [00:01:12.210]Now Stelling shares her leadership experience
- [00:01:14.960]with future engineers.
- [00:01:16.447][Stelling] True or false?
- [00:01:17.500]The term team and group are the same
- [00:01:19.230]with the same expectations.
- [00:01:20.824][Class] False.
- [00:01:22.026]You guys are making me proud.
- [00:01:24.057][Stelling] So what I'm teaching the students today
- [00:01:26.420]is how to work in a team on a project
- [00:01:29.590]and to respect each other.
- [00:01:30.857][Cassie Perry] She is one of the most
- [00:01:32.130]professional people I've ever met.
- [00:01:33.750]And on top of that, she's just a really good role model.
- [00:01:36.510]And somebody I want to be one day.
- [00:01:40.568][Narrator] Back at the launch site a week later
- [00:01:42.230]Stelling's team proves
- [00:01:43.416]second time's the charm.
- [00:01:45.517][Group] Three
- [00:01:46.420]two
- [00:01:47.253]one
- [00:01:48.086]Blast off!
- [00:01:50.857](cheers and clapping)
- [00:01:53.869](upbeat music)
