- [00:00:00.480]Before we get started here on this one,
- [00:00:02.010]the voice of the Oscar standby
- [00:00:03.790]Greg Sharpe stands by with this special guest, Greg.
- [00:00:06.650]All right, thank you Ben,
- [00:00:07.483]delighted to be joined by the Chancellor
- [00:00:08.840]of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Ronnie Green,
- [00:00:11.190]who just officiated some in-person commencement ceremonies
- [00:00:15.600]last weekend and I'm guessing you're still on a little bit
- [00:00:18.510]of a high to be able to do that at the end
- [00:00:20.260]of a wild school year with the pandemic.
- [00:00:24.400]Well, you got that right, Greg.
- [00:00:26.147]I mean, you know, a week ago, we had the opportunity
- [00:00:29.540]to celebrate with our undergraduate students
- [00:00:32.830]who graduated after, you know,
- [00:00:34.940]putting all the work and effort
- [00:00:36.550]in to earn their BS or BA degrees.
- [00:00:40.030]And the day before that we celebrated
- [00:00:42.650]with our masters, doctoral, law graduates
- [00:00:46.000]through graduate professional commencements.
- [00:00:48.440]We weren't expecting this to happen
- [00:00:50.540]but nonetheless we're really, really
- [00:00:52.650]happy when it did, little did we know,
- [00:00:55.840]until all the numbers were tallied on Saturday
- [00:00:58.631]that it was a record class
- [00:01:00.970]for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
- [00:01:02.990]biggest May graduating class in our history.
- [00:01:07.060]We thought that mark had been put in place
- [00:01:11.450]for a while for us about two years ago
- [00:01:14.420]when we had our record class then
- [00:01:17.282]but one of the silver linings,
- [00:01:19.910]if they're very few of these, but there are maybe a few
- [00:01:23.443]of the pandemic we've been in is that it did allow some
- [00:01:28.280]of our students to speed up their graduation
- [00:01:31.060]because they took more courses last summer
- [00:01:33.940]or they took more courses over the winter sessions.
- [00:01:37.620]And lo and behold, we graduated 3,594 students
- [00:01:41.650]which was a new record for us in that graduating class.
- [00:01:46.270]And we were so excited to be able to do it in person
- [00:01:50.220]and it was so wonderful to be with all of our
- [00:01:53.980]graduates and their families.
- [00:01:56.860]And for the first time in our history
- [00:01:59.240]to be able to celebrate our Undergraduate Commencement
- [00:02:02.110]and Memorial Stadium.
- [00:02:03.670]A little bit, I have to be honest with you,
- [00:02:05.540]we were a little bit worried
- [00:02:06.373]about the weather that particular day.
- [00:02:08.890]We had some storms were predicted to roll through
- [00:02:12.550]but they held off for us.
- [00:02:14.560]And we were able to have those ceremonies
- [00:02:17.300]for our graduates to hear from Tom Osborne,
- [00:02:19.730]as our commencement speaker
- [00:02:21.490]it was a special, special moment.
- [00:02:24.820]And I'll remember for a long, long, long time.
- [00:02:27.630]We also had success in our student athletes.
- [00:02:31.240]We had 78 Husker student athletes
- [00:02:34.360]both past and some present who had been gone a while,
- [00:02:37.550]who earned their degrees on, for example
- [00:02:39.650]one of those is Levonte David,
- [00:02:41.930]who won a Super Bowl earlier this year is as we know
- [00:02:45.777]he earned his BS degree in that commencement ceremony
- [00:02:49.630]a long time NFL running back
- [00:02:51.400]Correll Buckhalter was another former athlete
- [00:02:54.512]that earned that degree and then our baseball team,
- [00:02:57.970]you know that were in this game today had 10 graduates
- [00:03:02.950]from our baseball team, Joe Acker, Mojo Hagi,
- [00:03:05.870]Jaxon Hallmark, Logan Foster, Luke Roskam
- [00:03:09.700]and Max Robert all completed their degrees as well.
- [00:03:12.980]So just you're you're right.
- [00:03:14.980]I'm still kind of right behind, from that,
- [00:03:19.110]with our students and their families
- [00:03:20.680]especially in this year to have that happen.
- [00:03:24.233]And I should add we're bringing back
- [00:03:27.240]having the opportunity for our 2020 graduates,
- [00:03:30.220]who as you know, didn't have a chance
- [00:03:32.360]to have in-person commencement exercises.
- [00:03:35.450]We're doing a special ceremony
- [00:03:37.140]for them in August, on the same day
- [00:03:40.590]as it would play out, that Garth Brooks
- [00:03:43.170]is going to be playing a Memorial Stadium
- [00:03:46.350]that was announced here a few days ago
- [00:03:49.210]that we're very excited about.
- [00:03:50.739]So, you never know how those things are gonna play out.
- [00:03:53.870]Just terribly excited for our graduates.
- [00:03:57.050]Fantastic, congratulations
- [00:03:58.630]to all those young folks who picked up their diplomas
- [00:04:01.410]that is a special moment in their life.
- [00:04:03.290]Okay, you've put behind you now a very challenging year.
- [00:04:06.550]What's next now on your priority list
- [00:04:08.670]for the coming months?
- [00:04:10.890]Well, you know, certainly getting ready for the fall.
- [00:04:13.150]We've got summer school now, that's coming up here
- [00:04:15.300]just around the corner for us in a few days
- [00:04:17.680]at the start of our first short session,
- [00:04:20.140]but really looking toward the fall
- [00:04:22.050]where we plan to be back a hundred percent in full,
- [00:04:25.840]and be back to, we think, pretty normal conditions
- [00:04:29.560]for our fall semester.
- [00:04:30.960]And so we're planning very actively
- [00:04:33.030]and aggressively for that fall.
- [00:04:35.660]We look like we're going to have very good enrollment,
- [00:04:38.470]our enrollement's up for the fall, coming in with a very
- [00:04:42.220]very big and good freshmen class that we're excited about.
- [00:04:48.640]We're planning around the grand challenges
- [00:04:51.240]in our research area the seven Grand Challenges
- [00:04:53.610]that we announced just a few months ago as primary emphasis
- [00:04:58.420]areas for us over the years ahead
- [00:05:00.871]and putting some strategy associated with the launching
- [00:05:04.100]of those grand challenges is on our plate this summer.
- [00:05:07.220]And then if you've been on campus in the last few days,
- [00:05:11.470]you know, it's construction season,
- [00:05:13.343]so there's a huge amount of construction
- [00:05:15.870]that we're underway with across our campuses.
- [00:05:21.220]You know that some that's continuing
- [00:05:22.950]some that's starting currently.
- [00:05:24.940]A lot of orange fences are up around various parts
- [00:05:28.000]of our campus with aimed at sport, but also the launch
- [00:05:31.420]of the 'Go Big' Project and athletics,
- [00:05:34.230]The Kissing Columns and the gates
- [00:05:36.299]were relocated this past week.
- [00:05:40.510]I just saw them a little while ago actually
- [00:05:43.420]that they are now completely removed
- [00:05:46.100]for the start of the 'Go Big' Project
- [00:05:48.810]and a new location for those that will be announced soon
- [00:05:52.760]for our campus that will be exciting for everyone.
- [00:05:55.430]So construction certainly is on our minds
- [00:05:57.800]and but really planning around the fall and excited
- [00:06:01.420]about being able to be back a hundred percent
- [00:06:04.220]in person and just looking forward
- [00:06:05.840]to that here in just a few short months.
- [00:06:08.960]Absolutely, we'll look forward to all that.
- [00:06:10.470]Well, Chancellor, thank you so much.
- [00:06:11.730]It's always great to catch up.
- [00:06:12.840]Can't wait to sit down with you again.
- [00:06:14.880]Once we get the football season going in August
- [00:06:16.680]have a wonderful summer.
- [00:06:18.950]Yeah, you too, Greg, and Go Big Red!
- [00:06:22.550]Ronnie Green here with us here in our pre-game show,
- [00:06:24.330]we're back with our first pitch of the Huskers match up
- [00:06:26.570]with Northwestern coming up from Learfield.
- [00:06:28.444]IMG College this is the Husker Sports Network.
