- [00:00:00.209](upbeat music)
- [00:00:04.020]Hello and welcome! Our spring commencement ceremonies
- [00:00:08.210]marked the end of in historic academic year.
- [00:00:12.160]It was exciting to be in Memorial Stadium
- [00:00:14.620]for our undergraduate ceremonies,
- [00:00:16.490]the first time ever we've celebrated in this iconic venue.
- [00:00:21.510]Handing out diplomas is always a gratifying experience
- [00:00:25.020]but this year, even more so.
- [00:00:26.714](crowd cheering) (fireworks crackling)
- [00:00:31.900]COVID has truly tested our resolve
- [00:00:35.130]and given us so many opportunities
- [00:00:37.270]to show our innovative spirit and grit.
- [00:00:40.850]Thanks to technology,
- [00:00:42.287]we were able to remove many location-based barriers
- [00:00:46.000]and tap into partnerships and opportunities
- [00:00:49.280]that expand our potential and reach.
- [00:00:53.280]We delivered our Hyde lectures in an online format
- [00:00:57.400]attracting visitors from as far away
- [00:00:59.630]as Jordan, Greece, and Malaysia.
- [00:01:03.410]We hired part-time instructors
- [00:01:05.650]to provide unique learning experiences
- [00:01:08.640]and unparalleled expertise to our students.
- [00:01:11.960]In fact, our interior design program
- [00:01:15.120]offered two remote studios.
- [00:01:17.890]Alumnus Andrew Peterson
- [00:01:19.730]taught a third year studio from Michigan.
- [00:01:22.130]And faculty from Academic Initiatives Abroad
- [00:01:25.370]held a fourth year studio taught from Italy.
- [00:01:28.470]You know, the value of of doing a studio in Rome
- [00:01:31.070]is incomparable, but you know,
- [00:01:33.880]the opportunity at least of doing the remote studio
- [00:01:36.450]in which these kinds of issues
- [00:01:37.890]and the context is presented to the students
- [00:01:40.540]is something that the needy student
- [00:01:41.940]that doesn't have that opportunity
- [00:01:43.180]to travel abroad to have.
- [00:01:45.290]I thought that it would just be a great opportunity
- [00:01:47.330]to sort of gain a new lens on how to approach projects.
- [00:01:50.630]I know that there's definitely a way out here
- [00:01:53.280]that we kind of think about design
- [00:01:55.860]and that's not necessarily
- [00:01:57.350]the way the rest of the world approaches it.
- [00:01:59.530]It's exciting to see these opportunities unfold
- [00:02:02.100]for our students.
- [00:02:04.800]Jason Griffith's master of architecture studio,
- [00:02:07.600]is promoting urban agriculture
- [00:02:09.530]with the concept of physic gardens,
- [00:02:12.110]tiny downtown parks with a collection of native plants
- [00:02:16.080]known for health properties.
- [00:02:17.860]This project actually has two phases.
- [00:02:19.570]The first phase is a prototype
- [00:02:21.140]which we're actually trying to get built and get funding.
- [00:02:24.020]And so it's really exciting to see something
- [00:02:25.880]actually come out of the work that you've done.
- [00:02:28.630]And then phase two is a potential permanent installation.
- [00:02:32.070]So I hope with this project,
- [00:02:34.020]it really opens up people's minds
- [00:02:36.340]on what this can mean for urban place-making
- [00:02:39.670]and bringing these plants to life,
- [00:02:41.670]thus bringing our neighborhood and street to life as well.
- [00:02:45.030]In the college of architecture,
- [00:02:46.270]we extremely keen on finding ways
- [00:02:48.390]in which students can engage themselves
- [00:02:50.980]in issues that directly affect their lives
- [00:02:54.180]and the things that they have a legacy,
- [00:02:58.310]have a legacy sort of ownership
- [00:03:01.070]even after they've graduated.
- [00:03:03.170]Our landscape architecture students
- [00:03:04.860]are also heavily involved in community projects.
- [00:03:07.830]This was actually sold off during the homesteading era.
- [00:03:10.440]Shelby Warrick,
- [00:03:11.540]worked with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission
- [00:03:14.300]on a cultural landscape inventory project
- [00:03:17.230]for Fort Kearny State Historical Park.
- [00:03:20.410]That work is informing a new master plan
- [00:03:23.450]to make best use of the park,
- [00:03:25.600]which was originally built in 1848 as a Fort
- [00:03:28.760]to protect travelers on the Oregon-California Trail.
- [00:03:32.090]Because we were able to work with a student
- [00:03:33.910]on a real world project
- [00:03:35.670]and give the student some real experience,
- [00:03:38.790]and kind of a behind the scenes
- [00:03:40.340]look at our park planning process
- [00:03:42.100]and kind of the details of what goes into that process.
- [00:03:45.530]And then on the flip side of that,
- [00:03:46.710]it was tremendously helpful for us
- [00:03:48.630]because now we have a digital archive
- [00:03:51.160]and annotated bibliography of this information
- [00:03:53.520]of historical records for this site.
- [00:03:56.130]I am really learning a lot
- [00:03:58.010]about how to gain a community consensus about the project
- [00:04:01.610]and using that to aid in the master planning process.
- [00:04:04.540]And I'm also learning about how collecting historic data
- [00:04:08.240]informs the design process.
- [00:04:10.440]This fall, our Collaborate Studio
- [00:04:12.860]will continue the partnership with Game and Parks
- [00:04:15.600]along with BVH architecture
- [00:04:17.580]and University of Nebraska at Kearney's History Department.
- [00:04:21.300]The goal is to develop new programs,
- [00:04:23.850]spaces and displays to entice new visitors
- [00:04:27.240]to Fort Kearny State Historical Park.
- [00:04:29.313](upbeat music)
- [00:04:31.215]But the sidewalk is good.
- [00:04:33.610]Students from Yunwoo Nam's community and regional planning studio
- [00:04:37.240]are learning to make neighborhoods healthier and safer
- [00:04:41.090]with the Lincoln walkability assessment.
- [00:04:43.730]Yeah, we're learning about making neighborhoods accessible
- [00:04:47.240]and ensuring that every citizen has a clear path
- [00:04:51.140]to get to their destination.
- [00:04:53.080]The college developed a walkability audit tool
- [00:04:56.020]in cooperation with the city
- [00:04:57.490]of Lincoln's planning department.
- [00:04:59.620]Students use the tool to evaluate neighborhood pathways.
- [00:05:03.510]Professor Nam will accumulate the data
- [00:05:06.170]over several years and then share results with the city.
- [00:05:09.730]Auditing those information,
- [00:05:11.420]collecting and analyzing those data sets,
- [00:05:13.714]students will learn what information can be used
- [00:05:16.200]to change our community.
- [00:05:19.500]With projects like these,
- [00:05:21.120]it is no wonder our faculty and students
- [00:05:24.370]have continued to garner numerous local and national awards.
- [00:05:29.790]Lindsey Bahe and Jeff Day
- [00:05:31.860]were recognized for their teaching.
- [00:05:34.080]While our students receive design awards from Architizer
- [00:05:37.990]and the Society of American Registered Architects
- [00:05:40.710]to name just a few.
- [00:05:42.540]We have more to celebrate,
- [00:05:44.450]I encourage you to check out our website
- [00:05:47.090]for all the latest news and accolades.
- [00:05:50.380]We're proud of our students
- [00:05:52.030]as they gain a superb architecture planning
- [00:05:55.170]and design education.
- [00:05:57.120]And excitement over the impact
- [00:05:59.020]of the designed planned and built environment
- [00:06:01.540]has generated record interest
- [00:06:03.610]and increased enrollment in our disciplines.
- [00:06:06.240]We couldn't be more enthusiastic about this.
- [00:06:09.350]It does create some challenges
- [00:06:10.930]with finding enough studio space, though.
- [00:06:13.510]And with the unknowns of the pandemic,
- [00:06:15.820]the university put a pause on several construction projects
- [00:06:19.560]including our own Architecture Hall library
- [00:06:22.510]and studio renovation.
- [00:06:24.550]We are eager to have that project begin
- [00:06:27.360]although we don't yet have a firm start date.
- [00:06:30.840]You may have been following the Nebraska legislature,
- [00:06:33.580]and know the governor signed a bill
- [00:06:35.340]to fund deferred maintenance
- [00:06:37.050]on many older buildings at UNL
- [00:06:39.100]and across the entire university system.
- [00:06:42.200]It's not yet clear how much will be allotted
- [00:06:44.760]to particular buildings, or when,
- [00:06:47.140]but we are excited about the potential impact
- [00:06:50.520]on Architecture Hall and on buildings university-wide.
- [00:06:55.000]We love hearing from you
- [00:06:56.920]and your stories are those we tell
- [00:06:58.830]to inspire our future and current students.
- [00:07:02.240]So please do reach out and let us know how you're doing.
- [00:07:05.610]Have a great summer.
- [00:07:07.168](upbeat music)
