- [00:00:07.340]When you hear someone say ATV,
- [00:00:09.400]do you know what they're talking about?
- [00:00:12.030]That's right,
- [00:00:13.000]those letters stand for all-terrain vehicle.
- [00:00:16.100]ATVs are also called four-wheelers.
- [00:00:19.010]Riding can be exciting,
- [00:00:20.400]but there's really important stuff you should know first.
- [00:00:23.500]Here we go,
- [00:00:24.380]I bet you will learn something you didn't know before.
- [00:00:27.740]Have you ever been on an ATV?
- [00:00:30.090]Maybe you've even driven a small four-wheeler before.
- [00:00:33.800]Have you ever driven a full-size ATV made for adults?
- [00:00:37.660]Oh, you have?
- [00:00:38.760]Whoops, you were breaking the law.
- [00:00:41.890]That's right.
- [00:00:42.860]Nebraska law requires you to have a driver's license
- [00:00:45.920]to operate a full-size ATV,
- [00:00:48.900]not a farm permit, not a school permit.
- [00:00:52.880]Here's the deal.
- [00:00:54.260]ATVs are not toys.
- [00:00:56.770]Riding one is a big responsibility,
- [00:00:59.100]just like driving a car.
- [00:01:01.450]Consider this, of all youth under age 16
- [00:01:04.530]who are hurt driving an ATV,
- [00:01:06.590]how many do you think are on a full-size ATV?
- [00:01:09.941]Most of them.
- [00:01:12.140]One study showed that of all people
- [00:01:14.110]killed on full-size ATVs,
- [00:01:16.138]22% were under age 16,
- [00:01:19.390]and 56% of those kids were under age 12.
- [00:01:23.550]So remember, one size does not fit all.
- [00:01:27.366]Only ride an ATV that is the right size for your age.
- [00:01:31.890]Many people think riding with a parent
- [00:01:33.880]or someone older than age 16 is safer.
- [00:01:36.870]However, an ATV is designed to carry, not three,
- [00:01:40.278]not two, one person.
- [00:01:44.020]That means riding with someone else is dangerous,
- [00:01:46.920]even if it's an adult.
- [00:01:48.900]Why ride solo?
- [00:01:50.950]Because the extra weight of another person
- [00:01:52.950]shifts the center of gravity and makes the ATV less stable.
- [00:01:57.459]The center of gravity is the balancing point of an object.
- [00:02:01.440]If it moves out of balance, you could tip over.
- [00:02:04.870]On an ATV, the sweet spot is way up at your chest.
- [00:02:08.620]So that means you're naturally top heavy when you ride.
- [00:02:12.290]Adding weight raises the tipping point,
- [00:02:14.640]which could cause you to roll over easily
- [00:02:16.810]especially on hills and turns.
- [00:02:19.970]You might think,
- [00:02:20.803]there's plenty of room on this seat for my friend,
- [00:02:23.888]but that long seat is designed so one driver
- [00:02:26.790]can move freely on it.
- [00:02:28.740]You need that extra room
- [00:02:29.980]to shift your body weight and position
- [00:02:31.660]to avoid tipping over.
- [00:02:34.000]Pro tip, no matter which way you're going,
- [00:02:36.470]always lean uphill.
- [00:02:39.660]If you're going uphill, lean uphill.
- [00:02:42.840]If you're going downhill, lean uphill.
- [00:02:45.860]If you're on a slope, guess what?
- [00:02:48.310]Lean uphill.
- [00:02:50.540]It's pretty hard to lean and control the ATV
- [00:02:53.390]with another person there.
- [00:02:54.980]So always ride alone.
- [00:02:57.340]Anyone else can walk.
- [00:02:59.660]Why should you wear a helmet at all times?
- [00:03:02.520]Most ATV injuries are to the head, neck and shoulder areas.
- [00:03:06.867]You only have one brain, so take care of it.
- [00:03:10.740]Be sure to wear other protective gear too,
- [00:03:13.470]like goggles, long sleeves and pants, gloves and boots.
- [00:03:18.500]Okay, here's a little quiz for you.
- [00:03:20.870]True or false?
- [00:03:22.270]To be safest, you should drive an ATV
- [00:03:24.740]on paved or gravel roads.
- [00:03:26.426]What do you think?
- [00:03:28.569]Well, it may seem like roads are safer,
- [00:03:31.510]but the answer is actually false.
- [00:03:34.050]It is not safe to drive on pavement or gravel roads,
- [00:03:37.700]because ATVs are built for dirt.
- [00:03:41.090]You see car tires are made for roads.
- [00:03:43.560]They have a narrow design, low tread and lots of air inside.
- [00:03:47.460]But ATV tires are big with lots of tread.
- [00:03:50.670]There's actually just a little air in them.
- [00:03:53.010]They're kind of flat,
- [00:03:54.230]which helps them grip and grab everything in their path.
- [00:03:57.300]That's great for uneven dirt surfaces
- [00:03:59.730]where four wheelers are supposed to be,
- [00:04:01.860]but makes them unsafe for paved or gravel roads,
- [00:04:05.054]especially when you factor in high speeds
- [00:04:07.620]and the fact that it's difficult to see you.
- [00:04:09.841]Not only that, in Nebraska, it's illegal to drive down
- [00:04:13.770]any highway or county road
- [00:04:15.410]unless you're driving for an agricultural purpose,
- [00:04:18.190]like doing farming or ranching chores.
- [00:04:20.680]Any other reason doesn't count.
- [00:04:23.020]To be safe, stay on the dirt and off the roads.
- [00:04:26.461]One more thing,
- [00:04:27.920]if you're driving a side-by-side, the same laws apply.
- [00:04:31.183]You must be at least 16 with a driver's license,
- [00:04:34.400]and only driving on a road for agricultural work.
- [00:04:37.807]Did you know that most side-by-sides have seat belts?
- [00:04:41.220]Buckle up, that seatbelt may save your life.
- [00:04:44.530]Wow, you just learned a lot about ATV safety.
- [00:04:48.030]The next time you get on an ATV,
- [00:04:50.074]make sure it's the correct size.
- [00:04:52.490]And if someone offers you a ride, say, no, thanks.
- [00:04:55.180]I know how dangerous that is.
- [00:04:56.837]Always wear a helmet and protective gear,
- [00:04:59.520]and stay in the dirt where four wheelers belong.
- [00:05:02.400]And when you ride in a side-by-side,
- [00:05:04.289]buckle up.
- [00:05:06.467](horn honking)
- [00:05:07.400]Congratulations, now you are ATV aware.
