- [00:00:27.810]Hello. I'm Susan Harris from Nebraska Extension.
- [00:00:31.430]And in this segment of ATV Aware,
- [00:00:33.470]we're going to talk about helmets
- [00:00:35.180]and other Personal Protective Equipment.
- [00:00:38.790]First, let's talk about how we can be safer on an ATV.
- [00:00:42.280]I'd like you to consider for a moment.
- [00:00:44.340]All of the things that help keep you safe
- [00:00:46.380]when you're in a car,
- [00:00:47.938]let's see we have a seatbelt,
- [00:00:50.480]and it's the law to use them in Nebraska.
- [00:00:53.720]Most cars have a heavy frame over the top
- [00:00:56.080]but that helps protect in a rollover accident.
- [00:00:59.210]And a car's center of gravity,
- [00:01:00.880]usually hits a person somewhere on the leg area
- [00:01:03.500]and its tires have several feet between each side
- [00:01:06.510]keeping it fairly stable, even on fast turns.
- [00:01:09.770]Now let's look at what ATVs have to offer,
- [00:01:12.190]hmm...not much of anything.
- [00:01:15.610]And what it does have is working
- [00:01:17.720]against you in your effort to be safe.
- [00:01:20.240]That leaves a person quite vulnerable
- [00:01:22.040]to accidents and injuries, even death.
- [00:01:25.000]At the very least we should consider things
- [00:01:27.280]we can do to help keep us safer.
- [00:01:30.200]I always ask my students, can you fix your arm?
- [00:01:32.710]If you break it? The answer is yes.
- [00:01:35.440]Can you fix your leg if you break it?
- [00:01:37.270]Again, the answer is yes.
- [00:01:39.440]Can you fix your brain if you break it?
- [00:01:41.880]Absolutely not. And your best defense is a helmet.
- [00:01:45.380]Did you know most injuries happen
- [00:01:47.140]to the head, neck and shoulder areas?
- [00:01:50.060]You know, many of us require our young children
- [00:01:52.460]to wear helmets when they ride anything.
- [00:01:54.840]Why do we think we're immune to head damage as adults?
- [00:01:58.660]It happens and a helmet can absolutely prevent it.
- [00:02:02.540]Other important Personal Protective Equipment
- [00:02:04.570]would be eye protection, long sleeves, gloves
- [00:02:08.500]long pants to protect legs
- [00:02:10.130]from engine burns and other scrapes.
- [00:02:12.860]And then boots that cover your anchor ankles
- [00:02:15.370]and offer support.
- [00:02:18.270]One recommended piece
- [00:02:19.230]of protection is a crush protection device.
- [00:02:21.590]As shown here,
- [00:02:23.330]this hairpin shaped bar sits lower
- [00:02:25.800]than the top of the head to prevent catching on branches.
- [00:02:28.830]But in the case of a rollover, either sideways or backwards
- [00:02:32.320]this handy bar will serve
- [00:02:33.810]as a way to create space between the ground and the machine.
- [00:02:37.580]Because many people aren't necessarily killed by a rollover
- [00:02:40.780]but by the weight of that heavy machine landing on them.
- [00:02:43.890]This could be a lifesaver.
- [00:02:47.740]Lots of people feel safer in a UTV or a side-by-side.
- [00:02:51.720]They have some of those features a car has
- [00:02:53.920]and it seems okay to hop in and go.
- [00:02:56.240]We even let our children drive these machines like toys.
- [00:02:59.970]Here's the deal, injury and death rates
- [00:03:02.550]are climbing for these vehicles.
- [00:03:04.880]Can you guess the number one reason why?
- [00:03:07.040]What does this offer that many people don't use,
- [00:03:09.700]a seatbelt of course.
- [00:03:11.280]Speaking from experience and nearly losing my son
- [00:03:14.050]to a rollover accident that occurred in the blink of an eye.
- [00:03:17.250]I'm telling you the seatbelt is such an easy precaution.
- [00:03:20.710]Just buckle up, please.
- [00:03:24.810]Yeah, so why don't most of us use helmets on an ATV
- [00:03:27.820]or seat belts in a UTV.
- [00:03:30.260]Like I said, we feel immune to accidents.
- [00:03:33.000]We've been able to get away with it up until now
- [00:03:35.250]and we think we're safer than everyone else.
- [00:03:37.970]I'm here to tell you that I presented ATV Aware
- [00:03:40.570]at nearly a hundred venues now.
- [00:03:42.650]And at each one, I hear at least one story
- [00:03:45.350]of what went wrong as a result of not using
- [00:03:47.890]Personal Protective Equipment.
- [00:03:49.960]It's such an easy fix.
- [00:03:52.130]Please don't wait until you're a statistic.
- [00:03:54.210]It's better to say. I'm glad I did than oh if only.
- [00:03:58.430]I hope you make it a habit now and make it a long life.
