- [00:00:27.340]Okay, if you watch the first four segments
- [00:00:29.710]of ATV Aware, you will learn some
- [00:00:31.960]really valuable safe behaviors.
- [00:00:35.060]Now, this segment is called, "Nebraska Laws."
- [00:00:38.580]And when I say laws,
- [00:00:40.210]I'm talking about both for ATVs and UTVs,
- [00:00:43.480]or sometimes we call them side-by-sides in Nebraska.
- [00:00:46.710]So as we run through these,
- [00:00:47.910]just keep in mind that these laws apply
- [00:00:50.400]to both of those vehicles.
- [00:00:53.390]First, operation is only allowed between sunrise and sunset.
- [00:00:58.520]That means that you may only have your ATV
- [00:01:01.030]or UTV out and about during the day.
- [00:01:06.720]You must have a valid class O operator's license
- [00:01:09.990]or in other words, just a driver's license.
- [00:01:12.630]So that means that a farm permit
- [00:01:15.610]or a school permit doesn't count.
- [00:01:17.430]It has to be a driver's license
- [00:01:19.250]and you have to be 16 years old to be legal
- [00:01:21.820]in Nebraska on a full-size ATV or in a UTV.
- [00:01:27.740]You must have liability insurance coverage.
- [00:01:30.970]And if you don't have proof of that
- [00:01:32.530]on your vehicle at the time that you're pulled over,
- [00:01:35.730]at least law enforcement allows you five days
- [00:01:37.790]to get it to them.
- [00:01:42.240]Riding an ATV and a UTV means having a separate speed limit
- [00:01:46.440]from the rest of the world.
- [00:01:48.213]You may not operate at speeds
- [00:01:50.520]in excess of 30 miles per hour
- [00:01:52.910]and that includes any road, any county road,
- [00:01:55.810]highway, or highway that goes through a town.
- [00:01:59.630]Now, if you have a town where you have a special permit
- [00:02:02.220]to drive your ATV or UTV in that small town,
- [00:02:06.420]you follow the rules and the speed limits
- [00:02:08.440]of that town unless you're on the highway part
- [00:02:11.740]that's going through the town.
- [00:02:12.920]It gets kinda complicated,
- [00:02:14.890]but for safety, just keep it under 30.
- [00:02:19.300]Headlights and taillights must be on at all times.
- [00:02:22.810]That seems kinda silly, doesn't it? But that's the law.
- [00:02:26.630]Even in broad daylight with the sun shining,
- [00:02:29.840]you must have your lights on.
- [00:02:33.790]It must be equipped with an orange triangle bicycle flag
- [00:02:37.920]that's at least five feet from the ground attached
- [00:02:40.810]to the rear of your ATV or your UTV,
- [00:02:44.090]and that's of course so other people can see you better,
- [00:02:46.420]just like having the lights on can help that situation.
- [00:02:51.500]You may not operate on any public roadway
- [00:02:54.470]and that includes interstates,
- [00:02:56.300]highways, county roads, et cetera,
- [00:02:58.910]except to cross the road at a 90-degree angle,
- [00:03:03.170]or you may drive down that road
- [00:03:06.140]if you're doing it for an agricultural purpose
- [00:03:08.370]and you have a driver's license,
- [00:03:10.880]or you may be on city streets,
- [00:03:14.360]or town streets I guess I should call them,
- [00:03:16.590]if there is a permit within that town
- [00:03:18.940]that allows you to do so.
- [00:03:20.500]Those are the only reasons that it's legal
- [00:03:23.070]to drive an ATV or UTV on any public roadway in Nebraska.
- [00:03:31.000]So those are the Nebraska laws. Thanks for watching.
- [00:03:34.520]I'm Susan Harris with Nebraska Extension.
