- [00:00:04.580]Hey everyone.
- [00:00:05.413]My name is An.
- [00:00:06.270]Welcome to New Student Enrollment.
- [00:00:08.010]So, today we wanna talk to you a little bit
- [00:00:09.760]about the transition from high school to college,
- [00:00:12.530]specifically with regards to academics.
- [00:00:15.190]And to do that, we've got here with us today,
- [00:00:17.160]Dr. Kathy Castle,
- [00:00:18.790]who's from the Communication Studies Department.
- [00:00:21.610]Happy to be here with you, An.
- [00:00:22.968](upbeat music)
- [00:00:27.110]So, starting college can be really exciting,
- [00:00:29.920]but also kinda scary at the same time,
- [00:00:31.840]just because all of the experiences that you have
- [00:00:34.470]and all of the expectations, they just change a lot
- [00:00:37.670]from college to high school.
- [00:00:39.320]A big example of this is time management.
- [00:00:41.810]So, in high school
- [00:00:43.520]you have a lot of your classes outlined for you,
- [00:00:45.630]you're going through the same routine every day.
- [00:00:47.540]Even your extracurriculars
- [00:00:48.790]are pretty much the same every day,
- [00:00:50.930]but coming to college, you kinda have to do that
- [00:00:52.760]all for yourself without help of a teacher, or parent
- [00:00:56.000]the entire time.
- [00:00:57.540]So, how would you describe the differences
- [00:01:00.680]between high school and college structure?
- [00:01:03.580]I think one of the biggest differences
- [00:01:05.060]between the structure of a high school day and a college day
- [00:01:07.810]is the gap of time that you often find yourself with,
- [00:01:11.030]between your classes.
- [00:01:12.310]So, in high school, you're going from class to class
- [00:01:14.360]and as you mentioned, things are really structured.
- [00:01:16.530]But when you get into the college environment
- [00:01:18.650]you have this gap of time that you can choose to use
- [00:01:22.840]in a lot of different ways.
- [00:01:24.120]And so, using it in order to help you
- [00:01:26.800]get further in your classes and work on your schoolwork,
- [00:01:29.390]is really one of the challenges that students have,
- [00:01:31.620]because it feels like
- [00:01:32.460]suddenly we're free, (Dr. Castle chuckles)
- [00:01:34.420]but that time is really valuable
- [00:01:36.370]for students to use in that way.
- [00:01:38.140]So, it's recognizing what needs to be done
- [00:01:39.930]and how much time you need to accomplish that goal.
- [00:01:43.550]That's a good point because now students are in college,
- [00:01:47.030]they want more free time
- [00:01:48.080]and they are able to make those decisions for themselves
- [00:01:50.440]without the guidance of a parent, or a teacher around.
- [00:01:53.560]But as students, how do they make the most
- [00:01:56.360]out of their free time and use it wisely?
- [00:01:58.760]So, I think the first thing I would suggest students do,
- [00:02:01.680]is take a hard look at due dates
- [00:02:03.880]and take a look at all the things that they have going on
- [00:02:05.980]across all their classes
- [00:02:07.610]and put together a master calendar of due dates
- [00:02:10.650]and a projected amount of time that they might need
- [00:02:13.480]to complete things.
- [00:02:14.830]It helps them to get a really good, clear picture
- [00:02:17.170]of the things that are due for the semester
- [00:02:19.260]and they can plan their time out from there.
- [00:02:21.360]It's also important for students to keep in mind
- [00:02:23.420]that in college, 80% of the work that they're gonna do
- [00:02:26.680]falls outside the classroom environment.
- [00:02:28.920]Whereas in high school,
- [00:02:29.753]sometimes you have time in class to work on things,
- [00:02:32.220]in college that's not the case.
- [00:02:34.570]So, you have to allow for that time outside of class
- [00:02:37.380]I know my first year I really struggled a lot
- [00:02:39.690]with using a planner.
- [00:02:41.110]It just was not the method for me.
- [00:02:43.320]And I talked to a faculty member about it
- [00:02:45.340]and she actually gave me some suggestions
- [00:02:46.930]for different ways that would work.
- [00:02:49.290]I'm still kinda messing around with them
- [00:02:50.660]and seeing what works best for me
- [00:02:51.900]because everyone uses a different method.
- [00:02:54.115](dramatic music)
- [00:02:58.430]The next thing that I kinda wanna discuss is,
- [00:03:01.090]I believe that there's a myth around the difference
- [00:03:03.810]between college professors and high school teachers.
- [00:03:07.640]And some people find coming into college
- [00:03:09.640]that the professors are unapproachable,
- [00:03:12.160]or maybe a little intimidating.
- [00:03:14.460]Personally I've never had a bad interaction
- [00:03:16.630]with a faculty member.
- [00:03:17.880]Sure, I didn't have a very close connection
- [00:03:19.860]with every single one of them, but I could tell
- [00:03:21.980]that every one of them really cared about teaching students.
- [00:03:25.730]So, from your perspective,
- [00:03:28.510]how do you view your interactions with students?
- [00:03:31.560]We don't wanna see you fall behind, so emailing us,
- [00:03:34.800]keeping up on top of things, stopping by office hours,
- [00:03:37.570]getting the help you need,
- [00:03:38.940]helps us know that you're engaged.
- [00:03:41.123](dramatic music)
- [00:03:45.430]So, you'll often hear in college
- [00:03:47.210]that going over the syllabus is a great way
- [00:03:49.260]to set yourself up for success in a class.
- [00:03:51.600]Can you tell me a little more
- [00:03:52.580]about what a syllabus is exactly?
- [00:03:54.870]A syllabus is basically a contract
- [00:03:58.030]that professors create in their classes
- [00:04:00.560]to help students see what we're gonna be covering,
- [00:04:03.210]what's the content, when are things gonna be due,
- [00:04:05.470]what are the policies of the class,
- [00:04:07.510]which some students are surprised to learn,
- [00:04:09.470]may differ from one class to another.
- [00:04:11.700]So, when you're in a class,
- [00:04:13.530]one of the things that you'll need to do
- [00:04:15.300]is make sure you're comfortable and familiar
- [00:04:17.010]with course policies and expectations.
- [00:04:19.850]The syllabus lays all of that out.
- [00:04:21.750]And I would encourage any student
- [00:04:23.590]who's reviewing a syllabus, who has questions,
- [00:04:25.490]to be sure they're asking those questions
- [00:04:27.110]early in a class.
- [00:04:28.660]As you look at the syllabus, you're gonna see policies
- [00:04:31.390]around different things like, a Late Assignment Policy.
- [00:04:35.050]I know sometimes in high school, it's normal for a student
- [00:04:39.180]to maybe be able to turn some work in late.
- [00:04:41.640]In college, you may have some professors
- [00:04:44.370]that are comfortable accepting late work with a penalty
- [00:04:46.860]up to a certain date and you may have others
- [00:04:49.040]that will not accept late work.
- [00:04:50.960]So, it's really important for you to understand
- [00:04:53.100]policies like that and how they're different
- [00:04:55.490]from, not only high school, but from one class to the other.
- [00:04:58.510]So, the syllabus is a really important document
- [00:05:01.450]for a student to pay attention to and refer to
- [00:05:04.170]throughout the semester.
- [00:05:05.672](dramatic music)
- [00:05:09.940]Well, thanks Kathy, for answering all of my questions
- [00:05:12.370]and providing these awesome insights
- [00:05:13.790]to all of our brand-new Huskers.
- [00:05:15.600]Do you have any last pieces of advice
- [00:05:17.420]that you might wanna give them?
