- [00:00:15.060]Hi everyone, my name is Ashly Felipe-Espino.
- [00:00:16.950]I'm currently a junior at the university,
- [00:00:18.450]studying criminology and criminal justice on a pre-law track
- [00:00:21.270]with minors in political science, psychology,
- [00:00:23.120]and human rights and humanitarian affairs,
- [00:00:24.980]and I'm from right here in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:27.090]Currently, I am a member of a sorority
- [00:00:28.640]in the multicultural Greek council.
- [00:00:30.630]As I went along in American,
- [00:00:31.750]living on a predominantly white school district,
- [00:00:34.090]my educational experience so far had not allowed me
- [00:00:36.260]to interact with many people who look like me.
- [00:00:38.760]I joined the Office of Academic Success
- [00:00:40.340]and Intercultural Services, also known as OASIS,
- [00:00:42.730]very early into my first semester on campus.
- [00:00:45.180]Through them, I was able to meet new people
- [00:00:46.710]and attend events centered completely
- [00:00:48.890]around the Latinx community.
- [00:00:50.860]Coming to the university,
- [00:00:51.760]I never really considered Greek life as an option for me
- [00:00:55.170]but as a way to branch out, I attended Meet the Greeks,
- [00:00:57.460]which is an OASIS-sponsored event,
- [00:00:59.030]and my perspective was completely changed.
- [00:01:02.470]The event showcased many organizations,
- [00:01:04.310]all of which were mostly made up of students of color.
- [00:01:06.970]Each person brought their own unique culture
- [00:01:08.537]to their respective organizations, and it was clear
- [00:01:11.340]that people of all cultures and ethnicities were welcome.
- [00:01:14.980]There were organizations filled with Latina women
- [00:01:16.720]that were driven, intelligent, and confident.
- [00:01:19.300]I made sure to stop at every booth
- [00:01:20.770]to talk to all these organizations about things
- [00:01:24.070]that I've never considered and learned before.
- [00:01:27.330]I knew then and there I was in the right place.
- [00:01:29.580]I was able to find a group of women that looked like me
- [00:01:31.580]and had the same goals as me who made me feel welcome
- [00:01:33.483]and made me feel like I belonged.
- [00:01:35.690]I found my community here at the university by branching out
- [00:01:37.960]and finding things that I've never even heard of.
- [00:01:40.230]Try new things, you never know what amazing people
- [00:01:43.350]and experiences could come out of it.
- [00:01:45.597](light music)
