- [00:00:15.350]Hello my name is Gracie Williams.
- [00:00:17.740]I am a senior from Broken Bow, Nebraska
- [00:00:19.700]and I am majoring in English Language Arts Education
- [00:00:22.280]with a Minor in Art.
- [00:00:23.820]Coming to UNL,
- [00:00:25.010]where the graduating class
- [00:00:26.100]is bigger than my entire hometown
- [00:00:28.090]was both an exciting and nerve wracking prospect.
- [00:00:31.160]On one hand, I was so ready
- [00:00:32.850]to finally find new friends that I truly clicked with.
- [00:00:35.780]On the other,
- [00:00:36.613]I was nervous that the university was so large
- [00:00:38.800]I would be just another anonymous number.
- [00:00:41.410]However, I quickly realized
- [00:00:42.890]that my small town background
- [00:00:44.160]was actually an advantage
- [00:00:45.480]when it came to feeling at home on campus.
- [00:00:47.920]Within my first few days of classes
- [00:00:49.920]I saw so many people
- [00:00:51.180]I knew from my high school activities and sports.
- [00:00:53.810]Even if I wasn't best friends with the people
- [00:00:55.600]I ran into, it was comforting to look around
- [00:00:58.270]and know that I wasn't the only small town person
- [00:01:00.550]on campus.
- [00:01:01.860]While it was calming to see familiar faces,
- [00:01:04.100]It was also exciting to know that I had the freedom
- [00:01:06.480]to redefine myself
- [00:01:07.700]and explore the seemingly endless opportunities
- [00:01:10.440]of not only UNL, but the big city I now lived in.
- [00:01:14.060]Now as an orientation leader,
- [00:01:15.900]I get to work with Emma Crab
- [00:01:17.540]another small town Nebraskan
- [00:01:19.050]and I knew from high school
- [00:01:20.350]as well as many new friends
- [00:01:21.770]from all over the US
- [00:01:23.150]and even the world.
- [00:01:24.790]I would guess that you feel much the same as I did
- [00:01:27.120]as I was coming to college,
- [00:01:28.790]a little excited,
- [00:01:29.870]a little scared to start this new chapter.
- [00:01:32.120]My best advice,
- [00:01:33.360]you don't have to choose being a big city college student
- [00:01:36.200]or a small towner with deep roots.
- [00:01:38.350]Be proud of the unique experience of small town life
- [00:01:41.400]and use its advantages to broaden your horizon at UNL.
