- [00:00:00.000]The Voice Of The Huskers,
- [00:00:01.210]Greg Sharpe, had a chance to catch
- [00:00:02.670]up with a very special guest.
- [00:00:04.340]Here is Greg Sharpe.
- [00:00:05.830]All right, thank you Nick.
- [00:00:06.730]Delighted to be joined
- [00:00:07.563]by the Chancellor for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:09.560]Ronnie Green, big day yesterday, at Memorial Stadium,
- [00:00:12.200]and no, The Huskers weren't playing football,
- [00:00:14.430]but the University of Nebraska-Lincoln had not one,
- [00:00:16.910]but two graduation ceremonies,
- [00:00:18.820]with Nebraska students earning their bachelor's degrees,
- [00:00:21.170]where they heard a message from Husker coaching legend,
- [00:00:24.340]a former athletic director, Tom Osborne, and Chancellor
- [00:00:27.790]I bet that was great.
- [00:00:28.623]I bet the whole day was really a fun day for you.
- [00:00:32.230]Well, you know, it was, but because we haven't
- [00:00:35.100]been able to have a commencement person in over a year.
- [00:00:38.950]December of 2019 was the last time we had
- [00:00:41.820]a full commencement in person.
- [00:00:43.700]So, just being able to be back
- [00:00:45.900]with families and celebrating that with our graduates,
- [00:00:49.500]across our undergrads and grad students,
- [00:00:51.450]and law students was phenomenal,
- [00:00:54.390]the last couple of days.
- [00:00:56.680]And we did have our undergraduate ceremony
- [00:00:59.120]for the very first time
- [00:01:00.390]in our history as an institution in Memorial Stadium
- [00:01:03.110]which was an added, kind of cool element, for our graduates.
- [00:01:07.740]And they got to hear from the person
- [00:01:10.620]who the field is named for
- [00:01:12.980]and coach Tom Osbourne as the commencement speaker
- [00:01:15.670]to our undergraduate students there,
- [00:01:17.600]is such a tremendous legacy that T-O has,
- [00:01:21.470]both, as a coach,
- [00:01:22.920]but as a mentor, and as a teacher, and in leadership.
- [00:01:26.790]And they got to hear some of that wisdom
- [00:01:28.940]from him about this,
- [00:01:30.140]great to see him sharing it and great
- [00:01:32.260]for them to have that opportunity to hear
- [00:01:34.521]from him and just perfect setting.
- [00:01:36.160]You know, you can't make it
- [00:01:37.620]up really to be better than to have that kind
- [00:01:40.170]of ceremony in person,
- [00:01:41.670]the first time in a long time.
- [00:01:42.850]And then to hear it from T-O himself, was really special.
- [00:01:47.190]I've heard you say time and time again
- [00:01:49.250]your two favorite times of the year
- [00:01:50.830]is the first day of school,
- [00:01:52.100]and then when you have graduation ceremonies,
- [00:01:54.380]and I know it's pain you to not,
- [00:01:56.420]during the pandemic to have those in-person one.
- [00:01:58.720]So I'm sure yesterday,
- [00:02:00.520]maybe it was an emotional day for you too,
- [00:02:02.860]just to be back in person
- [00:02:04.310]and to be able to hand out diplomas.
- [00:02:07.150]Well, absolutely.
- [00:02:08.210]You know, we, we had three commencements last spring
- [00:02:12.760]in 2020 last summer, this past winter,
- [00:02:15.670]in December, where we conferred our degrees,
- [00:02:18.370]we did it virtually and they were wonderful celebrations
- [00:02:21.400]in and of their own, right.
- [00:02:22.360]But nothing replaces the ability
- [00:02:26.411]and the chance to do that in person.
- [00:02:28.850]As a person,
- [00:02:29.683]I was the first
- [00:02:30.516]in my family to be able to receive a college degree.
- [00:02:33.310]It's an ultra special moment to me.
- [00:02:36.400]And I know it is to graduates to be able to do that.
- [00:02:40.620]And it's a wonder, it's just a time moment
- [00:02:43.230]for the university community to celebrate just
- [00:02:45.940]a wonderful tradition here at Nebraska.
- [00:02:48.366]So, as I said earlier
- [00:02:50.100]to be able to do that with our undergrads
- [00:02:51.970]and Memorial Stadium was, was extra special.
- [00:02:54.976]We did it with our graduate students,
- [00:02:58.130]in Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday.
- [00:03:01.233]And to be able to do that in person, both the hooding
- [00:03:04.190]of our doctoral candidates, as well as our master's students
- [00:03:07.380]and then our law students receiving their JD's
- [00:03:10.490]and their hooding.
- [00:03:11.330]And, I was also in PBA on Friday.
- [00:03:15.840]So it's, it's just, it's an indescribable moment.
- [00:03:19.320]And I know Greg, you have a graduate
- [00:03:21.010]in your family as well this year.
- [00:03:23.410]So you, you understand fully what, what I'm saying
- [00:03:27.450]and just so special to be able to do that
- [00:03:30.450]in person.
- [00:03:32.170]We're looking forward to,
- [00:03:33.120]I should mention, to welcoming our 2020 graduates
- [00:03:37.340]from those three commencements last year, back
- [00:03:40.690]to Lincoln in August, when we're planning a special ceremony
- [00:03:44.920]for them on August the 14th,
- [00:03:48.680]the same day we'll have our regular
- [00:03:50.480]August commencement earlier that day.
- [00:03:52.780]And then that afternoon, we're doing a special ceremony
- [00:03:55.670]for our 2020 graduates to be able to experience that
- [00:03:59.570]for them as well.
- [00:04:00.740]So, another great commencement in the book.
- [00:04:02.940]Some 3,700 graduates that are now Alumni
- [00:04:07.190]of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:09.640]That is fantastic.
- [00:04:10.680]Congratulations on all of that and enjoy the game today.
- [00:04:13.860]This has been a fun baseball season.
- [00:04:15.240]We hope it goes a lot longer, but hey, enjoy the game today.
- [00:04:17.860]And again, congratulations on yesterday.
- [00:04:20.490]Well, certainly go big red
- [00:04:22.140]and looking forward to a great remainder
- [00:04:23.820]of the baseball season for our team,
- [00:04:25.650]it's had a great year.
- [00:04:27.640]Ronnie Green, Chancellor from the
