- [00:06:04.480]Ensuring your future is the colleges' guarantee
- [00:06:08.250]that any CASNR student who completes
- [00:06:10.320]the Ensuring Your Future program
- [00:06:11.830]will receive at least one job offer relevant
- [00:06:13.950]to their academic program
- [00:06:15.480]in the first six months after graduation.
- [00:06:19.700]CASNR has a rich heritage of
- [00:06:21.910]individualize undergraduate student advising by faculty.
- [00:06:26.260]While CASNR's traditional advising model
- [00:06:28.290]has evolved to include very talented professional advisors,
- [00:06:31.950]the commitment to personalize advising
- [00:06:34.030]remains a hallmark of the college.
- [00:06:37.890]Your new student enrollment advisor might be different
- [00:06:40.320]than your primary advisor.
- [00:06:42.380]All advisor information
- [00:06:43.990]will be assigned by the start of this semester.
- [00:06:46.610]This info will be listed on your, MyRed account.
- [00:06:49.740]If for some reason the information is not there,
- [00:06:52.100]please contact our office.
- [00:06:54.780]So, why meet with your advisor?
- [00:06:56.950]Your advisor can help with the obvious of class scheduling,
- [00:07:00.470]working out an academic plan or graduation plan
- [00:07:03.820]but they can also help with career plans
- [00:07:06.380]thinking outside of the box of your degree program,
- [00:07:09.270]serving as references and obviously helping
- [00:07:11.610]you stay on track with graduation.
- [00:07:16.620]Here are some tips for our college student success.
- [00:07:20.070]The first one is to get organized.
- [00:07:22.330]Keep a planner, whether this is paper or electronic,
- [00:07:25.460]you can figure out what works best for you.
- [00:07:27.660]Write down all the important deadlines
- [00:07:29.410]such as tests, quizzes, papers, projects, due dates
- [00:07:33.420]and keep track of the academic calendar
- [00:07:35.130]which can be found on the University's website.
- [00:07:38.070]Second, you'll wanna make sure
- [00:07:39.440]that you check your email often.
- [00:07:41.840]This will be your @huskers.unl.edu email
- [00:07:45.670]that you will receive from new student enrollment
- [00:07:48.270]after you have enrolled in classes.
- [00:07:51.340]All university communication will be sent
- [00:07:53.470]to your Huskers account
- [00:07:54.920]so it was important that you check this email every day.
- [00:07:57.530]Professors as well as Canvas will send information
- [00:08:00.230]to this email
- [00:08:01.180]and you should also check your junk slash spam mail
- [00:08:03.790]just in case emails fall in there
- [00:08:06.400]so you don't miss anything.
- [00:08:09.780]Third, it might seem obvious,
- [00:08:11.580]so we want you to attend classes
- [00:08:14.000]but what we would like to emphasize
- [00:08:15.490]is to be an active member of your classes.
- [00:08:18.210]Yes, we want you to show up,
- [00:08:20.140]but furthermore we want you to be prepared,
- [00:08:22.310]have content read in advance, have questions prepared
- [00:08:25.520]and be ready to take the information
- [00:08:27.130]that you were learning in your lectures
- [00:08:28.610]and apply it to your life.
- [00:08:30.400]Your professors will have office hours
- [00:08:32.180]or student hours that are just for you.
- [00:08:35.070]What that means is they will have two to three hours a week
- [00:08:38.360]in their office for students to stop by and say, hello
- [00:08:41.690]share your ideas or what you were feeling about their class,
- [00:08:44.510]ask questions or ask for help.
- [00:08:47.110]Professors appreciate when you come to their offices
- [00:08:50.180]and just talk about who you are and your goals.
- [00:08:53.360]If you cannot make the professors hours,
- [00:08:55.980]they always welcome the students
- [00:08:57.380]to make appointments with them.
- [00:08:59.290]We also want to remind you that all academic dishonesty
- [00:09:02.640]and plagiarism are not tolerated at this university.
- [00:09:08.710]Finally, CASNR offers a variety of ways
- [00:09:11.220]to be involved in your education beyond the classroom walls.
- [00:09:15.010]You may choose to perform research
- [00:09:16.580]alongside our world-class faculty,
- [00:09:19.030]build your entrepreneurial dreams,
- [00:09:20.820]connect with like-minded students,
- [00:09:22.700]or even play a little ultimate Frisbee.
- [00:09:25.230]At UNL and CASNR,
- [00:09:26.390]we have experiences for all those interests.
- [00:09:29.170]The university has many clubs
- [00:09:30.740]and recognize student organizations for you to join.
- [00:09:34.120]CASNR alone has 50 clubs and organizations.
- [00:09:37.960]When thinking about which club to join, ask yourself,
- [00:09:41.140]is this something that you're passionate about?
- [00:09:43.340]And is it related to your degree program?
- [00:09:46.140]We suggest joining one or two clubs or organizations
- [00:09:49.250]in your first semester at college
- [00:09:51.230]and as you become more balanced
- [00:09:53.150]with your career goals in time, maybe add on one more.
- [00:09:57.690]There's also opportunities for Education Abroad.
- [00:10:00.530]This helps you spread your wings further
- [00:10:02.180]than you might have ever imagined possible.
- [00:10:04.750]The impact of an international experience
- [00:10:06.670]is great positive and long lasting.
- [00:10:09.330]These programs range from one week, a few weeks, semester
- [00:10:13.460]or even year long.
- [00:10:17.200]So we've been talking about tips for student success
- [00:10:20.280]but what are some tips that we suggest
- [00:10:21.850]for the parents and guardians?
- [00:10:24.060]We want you to know that CASNR cares
- [00:10:25.720]about your students' success
- [00:10:27.140]and wants these students to succeed.
- [00:10:29.860]CASNR students are exposed to an education as transformative
- [00:10:33.240]and allows each student to craft their experience
- [00:10:35.830]to fit their passions.
- [00:10:37.840]Next, stay in touch with your student
- [00:10:39.640]whatever method works best for you and your family.
- [00:10:42.800]Let them know that you're their biggest supporter.
- [00:10:45.150]If any questions or concerns come up,
- [00:10:46.970]please reach out to the CASNR cares team for help.
- [00:10:50.040]Next, trust our advisors.
- [00:10:52.270]Our advisors are very talented
- [00:10:53.760]and will guide your students to get to their end goal.
- [00:10:56.890]Finally, celebrate all the next steps
- [00:10:59.020]your students will complete throughout their time with us.
- [00:11:05.080]We want to share with you some ways
- [00:11:06.660]that you can get connected while you were here.
- [00:11:09.020]One of those ways is the student systems
- [00:11:11.040]that are available to you.
- [00:11:12.760]Your, MyUNL account is the landing page
- [00:11:15.550]that will display the student systems that are available.
- [00:11:18.580]Instructions on how to set this account up
- [00:11:20.560]will come from new student enrollment
- [00:11:22.350]after you've been enrolled in classes.
- [00:11:27.053]In the next few slides,
- [00:11:28.130]we'll talk about some additional student systems
- [00:11:30.620]that you'll be using on a regular basis.
- [00:11:33.360]Canvas is a learning management system
- [00:11:35.640]that is used at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:11:38.550]This system is where all of your classes will be.
- [00:11:41.260]Instructors will post syllabi, grades
- [00:11:44.040]and assignments through Canvas.
- [00:11:46.200]Some of your classes are not going to be uploaded
- [00:11:48.440]or published until a few days before classes.
- [00:11:50.820]So don't worry if you log on right now
- [00:11:52.820]and don't see anything, that is fine.
- [00:11:55.800]MyPLAN, which stands for My Personal Learning
- [00:11:58.420]and Advising Network
- [00:11:59.870]is a program that provides a convenient way
- [00:12:02.270]for students communicate with faculty, advisors and staff.
- [00:12:06.200]Students can schedule appointments
- [00:12:07.640]with instructors and advisors
- [00:12:09.570]as well as search through available campus resources.
- [00:12:13.700]Your MyRED account is very important.
- [00:12:15.980]This is a system where
- [00:12:17.170]all of your student information lives.
- [00:12:19.680]MyRED provides students access to their bills,
- [00:12:22.200]scholarship information, unofficial transcripts,
- [00:12:25.147]final grades and advisor info.
- [00:12:27.930]It is the enrollment portal for course registration,
- [00:12:30.450]and it is where you can update
- [00:12:31.620]your contact information as well.
- [00:12:36.500]Through MyRED, you'll be able to access the degree audit
- [00:12:39.310]and degree planner programs.
- [00:12:41.370]First, the degree audit is a computer generated document
- [00:12:44.750]outlining your undergraduate academic progress
- [00:12:47.680]towards degree completion.
- [00:12:49.930]The document includes all UNL coursework,
- [00:12:52.420]transfer coursework and courses in progress.
- [00:12:55.720]You and your academic advisor will use this
- [00:12:58.310]to ensure that you were staying on track for graduation.
- [00:13:04.650]Second is Degree Planner.
- [00:13:06.460]The Degree Planner can be accessed through MyRED
- [00:13:08.830]under the Academics tab.
- [00:13:10.720]With Degree Planner, the student can engage
- [00:13:12.820]in a thoughtful iterative process
- [00:13:14.810]of planning and visualizing their whole academic path
- [00:13:18.050]and understanding its components
- [00:13:19.930]and developing accountability and ownership
- [00:13:22.410]of their academic experiences.
- [00:13:24.840]Students will work one-on-one with their advisor
- [00:13:27.220]to plan their path to graduation
- [00:13:28.940]by building a personalized multi semester degree plan.
- [00:13:32.870]Each students' academic plan
- [00:13:34.280]will include all requirements for their degree.
- [00:13:36.830]Students should revisit their plan each semester
- [00:13:39.050]with their advisor until graduation.
- [00:13:41.140]Advices will help students use their planner
- [00:13:44.110]to identify central components of their major and degree
- [00:13:47.160]as well as opportunities to personalize
- [00:13:49.230]their path to graduation.
- [00:13:52.010]We would love for you to connect with us via social media.
