- [00:00:15.545]Hey everyone.
- [00:00:16.378]My name is Taylor Daum,
- [00:00:17.211]and I am a first generation junior
- [00:00:18.870]majoring in English with a minor in geography
- [00:00:20.950]from Emerson, Nebraska.
- [00:00:22.700]As a graduating senior from a small town,
- [00:00:24.490]I had big dreams,
- [00:00:25.570]but had no idea where to start about achieving them.
- [00:00:28.300]I knew absolutely nothing
- [00:00:29.410]when it came to being a student at a University.
- [00:00:31.630]How to fill out the admissions application,
- [00:00:33.830]where, how to go about buying parking permit
- [00:00:35.720]and avoiding fines,
- [00:00:37.010]navigating bus systems between campuses,
- [00:00:39.390]how to pay student fees,
- [00:00:40.810]and don't even get me started on filling
- [00:00:42.620]out the FASFA, enrolling, scheduling and finding classes.
- [00:00:46.350]I panicked a bit when I realized
- [00:00:47.750]I couldn't ask my parents for help.
- [00:00:49.660]They'd never done this college thing before.
- [00:00:51.950]At the time I didn't realize
- [00:00:52.783]I was a first generation student.
- [00:00:54.850]I'd never heard that term,
- [00:00:56.530]but I soon learned that being first gen
- [00:00:58.560]is an important part of my identity.
- [00:01:00.440]And it's turned into something
- [00:01:01.560]I'm incredibly passionate about.
- [00:01:03.700]Being first gen has shaped my experience as a UNL student
- [00:01:06.280]by pushing me to embrace many first-time experiences
- [00:01:09.000]and overcome the odds.
- [00:01:10.570]My freshman year, I somehow found myself participating
- [00:01:13.340]in UNL's First Husker program,
- [00:01:15.290]which I highly recommend signing up for
- [00:01:17.340]if you haven't already.
- [00:01:19.230]This program is designed and geared
- [00:01:20.770]towards first year, first-generation students.
- [00:01:23.730]Through this program, I was introduced
- [00:01:25.440]to a variety of students, staff and advisors
- [00:01:28.010]and was immediately connected with the CAST office
- [00:01:30.580]the Center for Academic Success and Transition,
- [00:01:33.560]where I found a sense of belonging and self
- [00:01:35.490]within the first-generation community as a whole.
- [00:01:38.270]I quickly learned I wasn't on this journey alone.
- [00:01:40.750]Through shared stories,
- [00:01:41.750]I learned I wasn't the only one raising my hand
- [00:01:43.830]in the middle of lecture,
- [00:01:45.130]asking to use the restroom.
- [00:01:47.319]Ever since that terrifying freshman year
- [00:01:49.650]my passion towards first-generation students
- [00:01:51.760]and the community as a whole has only grown.
- [00:01:54.260]I'm now president of the first-generation RSO
- [00:01:56.910]a club that offers students a supportive group
- [00:01:59.010]that can help them excel academically,
- [00:02:01.010]find their sense of belonging,
- [00:02:02.260]and connect with the first-generation community.
