- [00:00:19.590]here at UNL from right here in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:22.270]And throughout my time in elementary through high school,
- [00:00:25.240]academic success had always been really important to me.
- [00:00:28.170]And I'd always been a student
- [00:00:29.100]who had done well on my classes.
- [00:00:31.030]And this commitment to academic success paid off
- [00:00:33.630]as I was able to land a job as a teaching assistant
- [00:00:36.050]for English 150 and 151 as a freshman.
- [00:00:39.890]However, the transition from high school
- [00:00:42.040]to college classes proved challenging
- [00:00:43.820]in ways that I just wasn't ready for.
- [00:00:45.340]I was in the first month of college,
- [00:00:47.207]I found myself struggling in my intro
- [00:00:49.150]to fiction writing class.
- [00:00:50.960]Being a TA myself,
- [00:00:52.130]I knew it was entirely normal
- [00:00:53.640]for students to come to office hours for help
- [00:00:56.030]but because I'd always done well in school on my own,
- [00:00:58.830]I found myself feeling embarrassed to ask for help.
- [00:01:01.710]It felt all the more awkward because I was a TA
- [00:01:04.400]and I started feeling a kind of imposter syndrome.
- [00:01:07.200]If I needed help with one class,
- [00:01:09.010]how could I possibly TA for another.
- [00:01:11.360]Eventually though,
- [00:01:12.193]I decided that it would just be well worth it
- [00:01:14.040]to go get the help I needed.
- [00:01:15.540]And once I did, I found that my professor
- [00:01:17.390]was just as helpful as I anticipated
- [00:01:19.670]and I was able to finish the assignment
- [00:01:21.090]I'd been struggling with, with an A.
- [00:01:23.210]What's more, going to my professor's office hours,
- [00:01:25.442]helped me find new ways
- [00:01:26.900]to help the students I assisted as a TA as well.
- [00:01:29.840]Since then, I felt no qualms
- [00:01:31.460]about setting up additional meetings with my professors
- [00:01:33.770]whenever I've had questions about classes.
- [00:01:36.070]And these meetings have always been helpful,
- [00:01:38.010]often in ways I didn't anticipate.
- [00:01:40.380]So speaking both as a student and as a TA,
- [00:01:43.790]don't hesitate to attend office hours
- [00:01:45.520]or ask your professors for additional assistance.
- [00:01:47.960]Helping you is quite literally part of their job.
