[00:00:03.930]One of the Explore Center's, academic advisors. In this video,
[00:00:07.710]I'm going to talk about the explore center academics at UNL and your next step
[00:00:12.000]toward enrolling in classes.
[00:00:14.880]The Explore Center is the academic advising home for all undecided, pre-health,
[00:00:19.170]pre-law, and pre-engineering students.
[00:00:21.630]Along with any student working on meeting college entrance requirements.
[00:00:25.590]We have eight full-time academic advisors, one career advisor,
[00:00:29.610]and one student success coordinator dedicated to helping you during your time at
[00:00:33.060]UNL. Our office is located on City Campus in Love Library,
[00:00:36.870]South room 127.
[00:00:39.480]Students typically associate academic advising with just picking out your
[00:00:43.050]classes each semester. While this is true,
[00:00:45.840]we can help with a lot more than just choosing classes.
[00:00:48.600]We can help you explore majors and careers.
[00:00:50.880]Stay on track with professional school requirements and generally navigate
[00:00:54.600]college life.
[00:00:56.700]We have required advising in the Explore Center through a program called the
[00:01:00.330]Compass Advising Program.
[00:01:02.280]Through this program you're required to meet with an academic advisor
[00:01:05.610]at least twice each semester.
[00:01:07.980]We encourage you to connect with an advisor in the first five weeks of the
[00:01:11.220]semester for your first advising appointment. In this appointment,
[00:01:16.280]we'll help you through a Compass Advising Plan to identify and work toward
[00:01:20.510]academic career and personal goals. For example,
[00:01:23.690]this could be getting an a in chemistry or exploring careers in psychology.
[00:01:29.270]whether you know exactly what career you're interested in, are completely
[00:01:32.930]undecided, or really anywhere in between our advisors can help you choose classes
[00:01:37.520]and gain experiences that will help you find your path while staying on track to
[00:01:41.270]graduate in four years.
[00:01:43.010]There are many ways to explore majors and we listed a few examples on this
[00:01:46.610]slide. You can take classes towards specific majors,
[00:01:49.730]participate in pre-health or pre-law workshops,
[00:01:52.640]Get involved in student organizations or take advantage of career advising.
[00:01:58.610]This is a graphic that shows up what requirements make up a degree at UNL.
[00:02:04.010]regardless of your major, students take classes towards ACE requirements,
[00:02:08.090]college specific requirements, major requirements, and electives.
[00:02:12.740]ACE stands for achievement centered education and is UNL's general education
[00:02:17.390]program.
[00:02:18.710]Major requirements will include specific classes that are required for the main
[00:02:22.730]focus area of your education. At UNL.
[00:02:26.180]You may also choose a secondary area of focus known as a minor that would
[00:02:30.140]require fewer classes than a major. Pre-professional requirements would include
[00:02:34.730]required classes for any professional health or law school.
[00:02:39.650]One way you will learn more about academic resources at UNL is through your
[00:02:43.400]first course called Explore Center Start Smart. Start Smart is a free, pass
[00:02:48.230]no pass course required of all Explore Center students.
[00:02:51.890]If all modules are completed by the deadline listed here,
[00:02:55.070]you'll likely pass this non-graded course. Being non-graded it won't impact your GPA,
[00:03:00.220]but it does still appear on your transcript. So please take it seriously.
[00:03:03.940]You'll complete the self placed class through a course portal called Canvas.
[00:03:08.950]If you have not already scheduled your academic advising meeting,
[00:03:12.310]make sure to do so soon through the New Student Enrollment office.
[00:03:15.940]After your advising meeting,
[00:03:17.350]be sure to set up your Huskers student email address as this will be used for
[00:03:21.400]all UNL communication.
