[00:00:12.013]Hi there, my name is Lori Romano and I'm
[00:00:14.067]the Director of the Center for Academic
[00:00:16.080]Success and Transition, or CAST office at
[00:00:18.265]UNL. Everyone always talks about how
[00:00:20.211]exciting it is to go to college. You get
[00:00:22.492]to meet so many new people, learn so many
[00:00:24.608]exciting things, and have a whole lot of
[00:00:26.740]fun. And that's all true. But college is
[00:00:29.108]hard. It's one of the biggest transitions
[00:00:31.356]you'll go through in your life. And the
[00:00:33.942]reality is, every student struggles with
[00:00:36.252]the transition, whether you're a first-year
[00:00:38.557]student, an international student, a
[00:00:40.216]transfer student, or a first-generation
[00:00:42.785]student. The Center for Academic Success
[00:00:45.867]and Transition is here to help you be the
[00:00:48.054]best student you can be. Here are just a
[00:00:49.959]few of the common things we hear from
[00:00:52.505]students who come into our office. We have
[00:00:56.127]students who walk in and tell us that
[00:00:58.199]they're just really overwhelmed with
[00:00:59.306]everything and they just don't know where
[00:01:00.975]to start. We have students come in and
[00:01:02.724]say that they don't know how to take notes
[00:01:04.352]in their lectures, or they're having
[00:01:06.139]trouble keeping up with the reading that's
[00:01:08.168]required for all of their classes. We have
[00:01:10.401]students come in and they say they just
[00:01:12.484]don't know what their professors want from
[00:01:14.172]them. And sometimes students come in
[00:01:16.835]and they just bombed their first round of
[00:01:19.154]tests and they always did really well in
[00:01:21.004]high school and they don't understand
[00:01:22.454]why things are not quite going as smoothly
[00:01:24.850]in college. Our team of Academic Success
[00:01:28.353]Coaches can help with things like time
[00:01:30.673]management, organization, reading and
[00:01:32.968]note-taking, test prep, motivation and
[00:01:35.837]procrastination, critical thinking. We
[00:01:38.986]help students make connections and think
[00:01:40.718]about their purpose for pursuing a college
[00:01:42.686]degree. And we help students get connected
[00:01:44.886]with other resources and networks on
[00:01:47.222]campus. We can also help you understand
[00:01:49.874]what's expected of you as a full-time
[00:01:52.089]college student. Things like how much time
[00:01:54.502]you should actually be spending working on
[00:01:56.821]your classes, what "studying" actually
[00:01:58.924]looks like, because it's a whole lot
[00:02:00.974]different than what you did in high
[00:02:02.353]school. UNL is a big place, and sometimes
[00:02:05.487]it can be tough to figure out where to go
[00:02:07.275]or who to talk to when you run into
[00:02:08.833]issues. We want you to get really
[00:02:10.858]comfortable coming into the CAST office.
[00:02:13.134]If you have a question that we can't help
[00:02:15.337]with or solve, we probably know who can
[00:02:17.508]and we can help you get connected. Our
[00:02:20.767]favorite part of our job is our Academic
[00:02:22.172]Success Coaching. These are one-on-one,
[00:02:24.581]in-person or Zoom appointments with our
[00:02:27.420]team of Academic Success Coaches. This is
[00:02:30.021]our chance to sit down, get to know you,
[00:02:32.271]chat about any issues that you're facing
[00:02:34.549]or questions you might have. And the best
[00:02:36.986]part is, it's not a one-and-done thing.
[00:02:39.036]You can schedule as many appointments as
[00:02:41.172]you need. We have students who meet with
[00:02:44.030]a Coach once a semester just to get
[00:02:45.653]organized and then they're off and
[00:02:47.605]running. Other students find it helpful to
[00:02:49.292]set up monthly or weekly check-in
[00:02:50.919]appointments just for some help keeping on
[00:02:53.717]track in classes and staying motivated.
[00:02:56.154]We also have free Academic Success
[00:02:58.805]Workshops each week where students can
[00:03:00.842]sit down and learn new skills in more of
[00:03:03.031]a classroom setting. And we have free peer
[00:03:05.651]tutoring in our Study Stops. You should
[00:03:07.913]never have to pay for tutoring on a
[00:03:09.953]college campus. We have special programs
[00:03:13.457]and activities for international students,
[00:03:15.365]transfer students, recipients of the
[00:03:17.631]Emerging Leaders scholarship, recipients
[00:03:20.187]of the Nebraska Promise scholarship, and
[00:03:22.640]first-generation students. One quick note,
[00:03:26.306]if you happen to be a first-generation
[00:03:28.187]student, which is a student whose parents
[00:03:29.723]or guardians did not earn a 4-year degree,
[00:03:32.064]you may qualify to participate in our
[00:03:34.266]First Husker Program. First Huskers are
[00:03:37.164]invited to move to campus early,
[00:03:38.969]participate in an intensive 4-day
[00:03:41.231]foundational event with a team of Academic
[00:03:43.791]Success Coaches and Peer Mentors, and
[00:03:46.069]connect with other first-gen students,
[00:03:48.225]faculty, and staff. And you'll have a
[00:03:50.300]whole lot of fun, too. I guarantee it. You
[00:03:53.473]can learn more about the First Husker

[00:04:02.633]There are only 200 spots available, so
[00:04:04.435]be sure to sign up today. You're going to
[00:04:07.305]be given so much information over the
[00:04:09.067]next few weeks, and it's going to be
[00:04:10.632]impossible to remember or make
[00:04:13.071]sense of it all. But if you remember
[00:04:14.804]nothing else, I want you to remember
[00:04:16.341]this...Nobody does college alone. The most
[00:04:19.018]successful students are those who reach
[00:04:20.923]out, ask a lot of questions, and build a
[00:04:23.869]really strong support network. That's
[00:04:26.383]exactly what the CAST office is here for.
