- [00:00:09.212]Congratulations, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:00:11.268](Bryan screams)
- [00:00:13.126](Bryan speaking in foreign language)
- [00:00:14.992]Dr. Damuth, without you,
- [00:00:16.570]I would not have those language skills or this shirt.
- [00:00:20.250]So I wanted to thank you for taking time
- [00:00:23.900]to help me figure out how theater was gonna fit in my life.
- [00:00:26.370]And for reading 100 rough drafts
- [00:00:30.050]of my Fulbright application.
- [00:00:32.010]Without a doubt, teaching English in Indonesia
- [00:00:34.300]changed the entire trajectory of my life.
- [00:00:36.920]And without your guidance, that would not have happened.
- [00:00:39.962]Thanks to you,
- [00:00:40.810]I have it burnt into my brain
- [00:00:42.240]to never starting email with hey,
- [00:00:44.610]and I make sure to sign off on all of my emails with best.
- [00:00:48.130]But more importantly,
- [00:00:49.550]I'm appreciative of your support and mentorship
- [00:00:52.500]over the years, and helping me to draw connections
- [00:00:55.480]between my interests and my goals.
- [00:00:58.030]It was thanks to your guidance and assistance
- [00:01:00.350]with the critical language scholarship
- [00:01:02.020]that I will be studying Arabic this summer.
- [00:01:05.330]And I'm so excited and grateful.
- [00:01:07.570]I think I've learned so much about writing,
- [00:01:10.300]about presenting myself in applications
- [00:01:12.450]and it's all thanks to you.
- [00:01:14.360]So, thank you so much.
- [00:01:16.230]Congratulations on retiring, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:01:19.040]I am so grateful for the opportunities
- [00:01:21.610]that you helped me achieve.
- [00:01:23.480]Fulbright Spain teaching for the year, Fulbright Bristol,
- [00:01:26.850]learning about the transatlantic slave trade for a summer.
- [00:01:29.820]Such foundational experiences
- [00:01:31.700]that I would not have been able to have
- [00:01:33.560]if it wasn't for you editing my essays,
- [00:01:36.340]brainstorming which locations and programs
- [00:01:39.820]I would be most competitive to win
- [00:01:42.390]and just really investing your time in me
- [00:01:45.230]so that I could grow as a writer,
- [00:01:46.970]as a traveler and as a student.
- [00:01:49.290]So I appreciate it so much.
- [00:01:51.330]I wish you the very best and I'm so grateful
- [00:01:53.780]for the impact that you've had on me, on my sister
- [00:01:56.160]on my family and the Honors Program in Nebraska.
- [00:01:59.240]Congratulations.
- [00:02:00.960]I just wanted to say thank you
- [00:02:01.793]for everything you did for me along the way.
- [00:02:04.180]Goldwater, NSF, grad school applications.
- [00:02:06.520]You took some pretty lackluster first drafts
- [00:02:08.880]and turned them into something that proved to be readable.
- [00:02:10.930]Dr Damuth, congratulations on your retirement.
- [00:02:13.870]I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today
- [00:02:16.330]without your guidance.
- [00:02:17.610]I had so much fun working with you
- [00:02:19.520]in the Fellowship's office.
- [00:02:21.290]I look back on those memories very fondly.
- [00:02:24.550]I hope you enjoy your retirement.
- [00:02:26.750]Eat a lot of cheese and bread and drink a lot of wine
- [00:02:29.240]and hang out with your pets
- [00:02:30.460]and just have a good, good time relaxing.
- [00:02:33.840]Your guidance and expertise as I was applying
- [00:02:35.610]for the Goldwater and for other scholarships
- [00:02:37.610]were really instrumental in getting me started on my path
- [00:02:39.750]to graduate school and now to academia.
- [00:02:42.900]It's really fortunate now to be able to use the skills
- [00:02:45.180]that I learned from you to help my own mentees and students
- [00:02:47.610]with their applications.
- [00:02:49.223](indistinct)
- [00:02:50.270]Thank you for all you did for me.
- [00:02:52.100]And I wish you the most fulfilling retirement.
- [00:02:54.950]Congratulations again.
- [00:02:57.586]Congrats on your retirement.
- [00:02:59.460]Thank you so much for all you did for me
- [00:03:01.350]and for so many other students in Nebraska.
- [00:03:03.300]You're one of those few people during your college career,
- [00:03:06.310]I feel like you really kind of inspire you to think more
- [00:03:08.970]about who you are, who you wanna be, where you wanna go.
- [00:03:11.640]And I know going through that process with you
- [00:03:13.570]and learning from you has really benefited me
- [00:03:16.270]and I'll always be grateful for that.
- [00:03:17.760]And again, congrats and all the best.
- [00:03:21.630]Congratulations on retirement, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:03:24.360]I just wanna say thank you for everything you did for me
- [00:03:27.430]from the Gilman Scholarship, to the Fulbright Award,
- [00:03:30.750]to always just being there to put on a workshop with me
- [00:03:33.990]for the William H. Thompson Learning Community.
- [00:03:36.500]I don't think you'll ever fully realize the impact you had
- [00:03:39.120]on so many students at UNL
- [00:03:41.030]and just helping us see the world and experience new things.
- [00:03:44.010]And for that, we cannot thank you enough.
- [00:03:46.430]Enjoy retirement.
- [00:03:47.650]Congratulations.
- [00:03:49.010]You were the first to ever mentioned Brazil to me,
- [00:03:51.030]and I'm so incredibly grateful for that.
- [00:03:53.430]As I fell deeply in love with the people,
- [00:03:55.900]the culture and the language, and continue to this day
- [00:03:58.890]and have been back since.
- [00:04:00.990]It never would have been possible without you
- [00:04:02.740]and your investment in me.
- [00:04:03.760]And I hope you know that your impact continues to live on.
- [00:04:06.750]Thank you for your dedication to your students
- [00:04:08.770]and to the Honors Program.
- [00:04:10.450]I know it's changed the lives of countless students.
- [00:04:13.380]Enjoy your retirement.
- [00:04:16.690]Hi, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:04:17.700]Congratulations on your retirement.
- [00:04:20.090]I think back all the time on my first year at UNL
- [00:04:24.550]and especially about the questions that you posed to me,
- [00:04:28.200]what makes for a good college education?
- [00:04:30.870]What kinds of knowledge are necessary
- [00:04:32.940]for a well-rounded education?
- [00:04:35.330]Those questions are still really important to me.
- [00:04:39.560]I think that I probably in part went to graduate school
- [00:04:43.150]just because I couldn't stop thinking about those questions.
- [00:04:46.090]And they're questions that I still think about
- [00:04:47.603]with my own students and really enjoy discussing with them.
- [00:04:51.930]So I'll always be really grateful to you
- [00:04:53.610]for putting me down that path
- [00:04:55.470]and for sort of raising my expectations
- [00:04:59.360]about what I could get out of a college education.
- [00:05:02.850]I'm very grateful.
- [00:05:03.740]Wishing you all the best.
- [00:05:06.195]When I think back to my time working with you,
- [00:05:08.610]I think about the thoughtful conversations
- [00:05:10.810]that we had every week.
- [00:05:12.200]The hard work and dedication that you put into every meeting
- [00:05:14.810]that we had, and the pure kindness that you showed to me
- [00:05:17.920]along with every other student that I know
- [00:05:19.920]that worked with you.
- [00:05:21.140]I'm so grateful for your knowledge and expertise.
- [00:05:23.850]It was second to none.
- [00:05:25.490]I cannot tell you how thankful I am to have met you.
- [00:05:28.070]And I hope we keep in touch.
- [00:05:29.260]I just want to say thanks again for everything.
- [00:05:30.960]And I hope you have a great retirement
- [00:05:32.530]full of lots of laughs, and of course, tons of corgis.
- [00:05:35.000]Thanks.
- [00:05:37.020]Hi, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:05:38.080]Greetings from Madrid.
- [00:05:39.190]I just wanted to say, congrats on your retirement.
- [00:05:42.350]And so I don't know if you remember
- [00:05:44.200]but the first time we ever met, I came to your office
- [00:05:46.930]to ask for advice on adding another major or something.
- [00:05:50.650]And you were like,
- [00:05:52.087]"Well, why aren't you applying for the Truman Scholarship?"
- [00:05:55.030]And that conversation, that moment,
- [00:05:57.230]they really changed the course
- [00:05:58.340]of a lot of things in my life.
- [00:06:00.060]So I'm just so grateful to you.
- [00:06:01.620]And also, the only reason I'm filming this video right now
- [00:06:04.520]in Spain is because all of the work you put in,
- [00:06:07.030]helping me apply for the Fulbright Scholarship.
- [00:06:09.220]So thank you so much for the impact you've made in my life.
- [00:06:12.020]Nebraska is really going to miss you
- [00:06:13.970]but I hope you finally get to relax a little bit
- [00:06:16.650]and enjoy your retirement.
- [00:06:19.030]I must thank you sincerely
- [00:06:21.270]for the investment you made in my education,
- [00:06:23.680]as well as in the education of so many other students
- [00:06:26.340]at UNL.
- [00:06:27.380]And I sincerely wish you the best on your next adventures.
- [00:06:31.850]I'm just finishing up my PhD in math at Yale.
- [00:06:34.110]And as I'm planning to stay in the academy,
- [00:06:35.690]I'll be using what you taught me for the rest of my career.
- [00:06:38.280]I can't imagine where I'd be without your support.
- [00:06:40.643]And probably wouldn't be able to express it
- [00:06:42.123]very well either.
- [00:06:43.920]Congratulations again.
- [00:06:44.753]And I hope you enjoy your retirement.
- [00:06:47.710]And because of you,
- [00:06:49.190]I truly believe that I am where I am today
- [00:06:52.800]in my current career in International House.
- [00:06:55.180]So thank you so much for your impact.
- [00:06:56.960]I know you've had an impact on so many students at UNL.
- [00:06:59.899]I don't know what the Fellowship Office
- [00:07:01.900]is gonna do without you,
- [00:07:02.970]but congratulations on your very deserved retirement.
- [00:07:07.630]Congratulations on your retirement, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:07:10.341]When I think back to when I first entered college
- [00:07:13.150]over 10 years ago,
- [00:07:15.420]I remember having a sense of what am I doing here?
- [00:07:18.270]And it was you and Ann and 298 H that allowed us
- [00:07:22.060]to ask that question
- [00:07:23.726]and to find out for ourselves what we were doing there.
- [00:07:27.100]And I'm now a high school teacher
- [00:07:30.070]and I hope to do the same thing for that same space
- [00:07:32.690]for our students that you did for us.
- [00:07:34.670]Happy retirement.
- [00:07:36.180]I know that I learned so much from you
- [00:07:37.990]and I know that I will carry those lessons
- [00:07:40.210]into graduate school this fall
- [00:07:42.430]and throughout my professional career.
- [00:07:44.330]So, thank you so much and congrats on your retirement.
- [00:07:49.740]Happy retirement, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:07:51.960]When I think back on my time at UNL,
- [00:07:55.300]our relationship stands out
- [00:07:57.670]as one of the most formative.
- [00:07:59.650]You believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.
- [00:08:03.470]I remember junior year when I had just come back
- [00:08:07.940]from studying abroad in Russia
- [00:08:09.632]and I was tired and I was discouraged
- [00:08:12.630]because I had already lost the Boren,
- [00:08:15.200]I'd lost the CLS twice.
- [00:08:16.950]And I thought I was cut out for these fellowships,
- [00:08:20.860]but maybe I'm wrong.
- [00:08:22.473]And you said to me,
- [00:08:24.787]"Annie, the Truman Scholarship is the one that is for you.
- [00:08:29.230]You need to apply.
- [00:08:30.870]This is the one."
- [00:08:32.150]And I trusted you.
- [00:08:33.870]And I put in an application
- [00:08:35.620]and it was finally the application that worked out.
- [00:08:38.940]And I remember being in the bathroom
- [00:08:41.790]at the state legislature working as a page
- [00:08:45.150]and you gave me a call.
- [00:08:46.670]This would have been spring of my junior year.
- [00:08:50.170]And it was one of the happiest moments in undergrad
- [00:08:53.580]when I felt like all of the hard work
- [00:08:55.810]and all of the support
- [00:08:56.744]that you had given me in making my application
- [00:09:00.460]as strong as it could be, was finally paying off.
- [00:09:02.930]And of course, then we have all the trials
- [00:09:04.830]and tribulations of applying for the Fulbright and winning.
- [00:09:08.043]Applying for Carnegie and winning.
- [00:09:10.400]But then also applying for the Rhodes twice and the Marshall
- [00:09:13.420]and losing three times.
- [00:09:15.340]And I am so glad
- [00:09:17.760]that you are the person that I went on that journey with.
- [00:09:22.590]You helped me find the confidence to be myself
- [00:09:27.690]and to imagine and go over opportunities
- [00:09:31.370]that were so much bigger
- [00:09:32.689]than anything I could have thought was possible.
- [00:09:36.800]And it's really thanks to,
- [00:09:38.920]sorry to tear up.
- [00:09:39.900]It's really thanks to you that I am where I am today.
- [00:09:45.030]Thank you.
- [00:09:46.340]Congratulations.
- [00:09:48.150]And I'm forever indebted to your hard work
- [00:09:52.530]and your belief in me.
- [00:09:54.920]Congratulations, Dr. Damuth.
- [00:09:57.822]So, thank you.
- [00:09:58.655]So, thank you.
- [00:09:59.488]Thank you so much.
- [00:10:00.370]Thank you for all you did for me.
- [00:10:02.120]Thank you so much.
- [00:10:03.350]I must thank you sincerely
- [00:10:05.580]for the investment you made in my education.
- [00:10:07.690]Thank you so much.
- [00:10:08.690]Thank you so much.
- [00:10:09.800]I just wanted to say thank you for everything
- [00:10:11.490]you did for me along the way.
- [00:10:12.880]I cannot tell you how thankful I am to have met you.
- [00:10:15.490]So thank you so much for your impact.
- [00:10:17.320]I know you've had an impact on so many students at UNL.
- [00:10:20.056]Thank you for your dedication to your students.
- [00:10:22.810]So thank you so much for the impact
- [00:10:24.270]you've made in my life.
- [00:10:25.620]Nebraska is really going to miss you,
- [00:10:27.580]but I hope you finally get to relax a little bit
- [00:10:30.240]and enjoy your retirement.
