- [00:00:00.570]Hello, and welcome to the involvement session. We are
- [00:00:03.930]so excited that you are here with us today, and that you are engaging in this
- [00:00:07.430]process as you begin your transition to college. Today,
- [00:00:11.060]we are going to share with you just a few ways that can assist you during your
- [00:00:14.600]involvement journey while at UNL.
- [00:00:17.000]There are numerous ways for you to get connected across campus and in the
- [00:00:20.660]Lincoln community,
- [00:00:21.950]and we will try our best to cover those throughout this presentation,
- [00:00:25.190]as well as share with you helpful tools and resources.
- [00:00:30.380]Our goal here in the student,
- [00:00:31.850]leadership involvement and community engagement office or SLICE office
- [00:00:37.130]is to help you find ways to get engaged that work for you.
- [00:00:40.550]It is our hope that your participation will lead to finding friendships and
- [00:00:44.600]community, connecting and applying what you are learning in the classroom, and
- [00:00:48.830]assist you in discovering new or different ideas.
- [00:00:53.300]The SLICE team is made up of a few different areas,
- [00:00:56.000]which all have opportunities for you to get involved.
- [00:00:59.060]The first are recognized student organizations, or as we tend to call them RSOs.
- [00:01:04.490]Currently we have about 500 plus active RSOs that run the gamut
- [00:01:08.930]when it comes to interest and purpose.
- [00:01:11.330]We will dive into the specifics of how you can find out more about those RSOs
- [00:01:15.440]later in the presentation.
- [00:01:17.450]Next is our campus nightlife team whose main focus is to provide engagement
- [00:01:21.860]opportunities specifically during late nights and on the weekends.
- [00:01:26.180]They host everything from carnival nights to karaoke events,
- [00:01:29.750]All with the intent of helping students find community. UNL recently made
- [00:01:34.670]the commitment of having something for students to participate in every weekend,
- [00:01:38.840]and our campus nightlife team is a big contributor to that initiative.
- [00:01:43.430]Our university program council or UPC as we call them,
- [00:01:47.240]is a board that is comprised of student volunteers,
- [00:01:50.090]who diligently work to provide events and programs that are appealing to
- [00:01:53.870]students across campus. They regularly bring in speakers, comedians,
- [00:01:58.730]and coordinate concerts throughout the school year,
- [00:02:01.280]all of which are free for you to attend. Last but not least our
- [00:02:06.020]leadership and community engagement opportunities.
- [00:02:09.260]Your involvement can extend beyond the boundaries of campus.
- [00:02:12.950]Our team is here to help you do just that through service, civic, and democratic
- [00:02:17.000]engagement and through offering leadership programs,
- [00:02:20.150]such as the civic engagement certificate and the chancellor's leadership class.
- [00:02:26.810]We know that the downside to there being so many opportunities is that sometimes
- [00:02:31.010]students can feel overwhelmed and not really know where to start.
- [00:02:34.670]So because of that, we try to break down the involvement journey into steps.
- [00:02:38.660]The first of which is to show up because how do you know if you like something
- [00:02:42.140]or not, if you don't show up and see for yourself?
- [00:02:44.990]We encourage you to get out of your room and show up to the happenings across
- [00:02:48.920]campus. This could be a large event like the back to school bash,
- [00:02:52.940]a smaller scale trivia night hosted in the union,
- [00:02:55.820]or even a meeting for an RSO that you might be interested in joining.
- [00:03:00.580]We hear from other students that the number one reason they don't attend events
- [00:03:04.030]is because they don't want to go alone.
- [00:03:06.040]So we also encourage and challenge you to invite your roommates, classmates,
- [00:03:10.180]or friends to join you or say yes, when the invitation is extended
- [00:03:14.320]to you.
- [00:03:16.420]There are a number of event calendars available to help you find those events
- [00:03:20.290]and activities. We'll share a few of the main ones with you now.
- [00:03:24.250]The big red welcome website and calendar is a great place to see what all is
- [00:03:28.090]going on during the first few weeks of classes in August.
- [00:03:32.710]The student event calendar is another great resource to see what is happening
- [00:03:36.550]across campus, specifically for students. It includes events
- [00:03:40.660]big and small, but also things like workshops, informational sessions,
- [00:03:44.710]support groups, and study session type opportunities.
- [00:03:49.660]The last calendar we'd like to share is the event calendar on NvolveU.
- [00:03:54.040]You can get to this calendar with the URL unl.campuslabs.com/engage
- [00:03:58.060]and then selecting events.
- [00:04:02.560]in the top banner.
- [00:04:04.090]This calendar will show you all of the events that are being hosted by our RSOs.
- [00:04:08.800]You will see everything from meetings to fundraisers,
- [00:04:11.350]to practices on this calendar.
- [00:04:13.210]So one thing we particularly like is the filtering tool on the left-hand side.
- [00:04:18.760]You can filter by date, by category or type of event,
- [00:04:26.040]or our personal favorite by perks. Free food? Yes,
- [00:04:30.990]please.
- [00:04:34.560]Once you arrive on campus, many of the events you attend,
- [00:04:37.560]will have you check in with your event pass, which is a QR code,
- [00:04:41.280]unique to you that will stay with you the whole time you're at UNL.
- [00:04:45.150]This short video will show you how you can download your event pass.
- [00:05:38.190]Once you have found something you are interested in, we encourage you to sign up.
- [00:05:42.120]This could be with one of our many RSOs, with an intermural sports team,
- [00:05:46.020]with a fraternity or sorority, or even signing up to complete a service project.
- [00:05:50.730]A few frequently asked questions
- [00:05:52.440]we typically hear when it comes to joining things:
- [00:05:55.170]Is it possible to be over-involved? While this is certainly a possibility,
- [00:05:59.690]we suggest mitigating this by starting with two involvement pieces.
- [00:06:03.890]One that is related to your field of study or career goals,
- [00:06:07.100]and one that is more social in nature.
- [00:06:09.680]Exploring organizations that are tied to a specific degree program or
- [00:06:13.370]professional association is a great way to learn more about a particular field
- [00:06:17.270]of study
- [00:06:17.660]you might be interested in. Another common one: If I sign up am I stuck?
- [00:06:23.300]Absolutely not! Figuring out which groups and types of involvement is right for
- [00:06:27.500]you is all a part of the process. If you try something out and decide,
- [00:06:31.370]it's just not your jam or not what you thought it was that's okay.
- [00:06:34.700]We encourage you to keep trying until you find the right fit.
- [00:06:39.290]As mentioned before,
- [00:06:40.280]there are numerous opportunities to be engaged here at Nebraska.
- [00:06:44.000]We want to highlight just a few to get you started.
- [00:06:47.720]The first is NvolveU,
- [00:06:49.280]which we mentioned earlier for the student organization event calendar.
- [00:06:53.060]If you did any digging around on that site between then and now you will notice
- [00:06:56.840]that NvolveU is our one-stop shop for all things, student organizations.
- [00:07:01.340]It is where you can find a current list of all active RSOs by clicking on the
- [00:07:05.660]organizations tab in the top banner. We can see a full list,
- [00:07:09.980]and on the left-hand side, we have a handy filtering option again
- [00:07:13.220]to help narrow down your search. One way to filter is by category.
- [00:07:18.200]For example, let's say you're interested in joining a sport club.
- [00:07:22.490]We could simply select that category and it will
- [00:07:28.010]show all active sport clubs here at UNL.
- [00:07:32.060]Another great way to search is by keyword. Let's say you're an animal lover.
- [00:07:37.580]We can type in animals into the keyword search and any
- [00:07:42.410]organization that has animals listed in their profile will appear.
- [00:07:49.630]Once you find an organization that looks interesting,
- [00:07:54.250]you can click into that organizations portal to find out a bit more about them.
- [00:07:58.750]You can check out the description
- [00:08:02.530]and purpose of the organization, see what kind of events they host,
- [00:08:08.350]check out any photos in their gallery, and even check out the groups
- [00:08:11.680]social media pages.
- [00:08:13.600]There is even a place where you can reach out to the organization to see when
- [00:08:18.280]their next meeting might be, or what the membership process looks like.
- [00:08:23.710]We also want to highlight our two club fairs will be hosted during the first
- [00:08:27.370]week of classes in the fall.
- [00:08:29.320]These are great events to meet many of our RSOs in person.
- [00:08:33.910]Our campus recreation partners also have many involvement opportunities,
- [00:08:38.020]whether that be joining an intermural sports team,
- [00:08:40.990]going on a trip with outdoor adventures,
- [00:08:43.060]or simply meeting up with friends at a group fitness class.
- [00:08:46.240]You can find their offerings at crec.unl.edu.
- [00:08:51.010]If service is up your alley,
- [00:08:52.930]our community engagement team can help you help you find those opportunities.
- [00:08:57.120]You can head to their page on our SLICE website to see the most up-to-date
- [00:09:01.560]offerings.
- [00:09:04.250]Once you've settled in and found your way to connect, we challenge you to level up.
- [00:09:08.960]We encourage you to take on leadership positions within your organizations,
- [00:09:12.860]or maybe become a mentor and a peer mentor group.
- [00:09:16.100]It could also mean applying for an on-campus job and internship,
- [00:09:19.550]or even a research position.
- [00:09:21.740]Your biggest project while you're in school is yourself.
- [00:09:24.590]And we want to help you develop personally and professionally while here at
- [00:09:28.070]Nebraska. Listed here,
- [00:09:31.850]we have just a few ways you can continue to level up while on campus.
- [00:09:36.290]Husker handshake is where students can search and apply for internships and jobs
- [00:09:41.030]on and off campus. If you secure an on-campus job,
- [00:09:44.810]you will likely participate in what we call Husker GROW,
- [00:09:48.200]which is an intentional conversation between you and your supervisor about
- [00:09:52.040]connecting what you're learning in the classroom with what you're learning and
- [00:09:55.400]doing in your job.
- [00:09:57.020]The chancellor's leadership class is designed to assist first year students in
- [00:10:01.040]developing their leadership knowledge and skills while gaining a better
- [00:10:04.460]understanding of themselves.
- [00:10:06.500]And the civic engagement certificate enables students to connect what they
- [00:10:10.040]learned from civic engagement, designated courses,
- [00:10:12.890]over the course of a few semesters with key experiences that will
- [00:10:17.750]help them develop a lifelong habit of civic engagement.
- [00:10:23.300]We hope that
- [00:10:24.200]the information and resources we provided today will be helpful to you
- [00:10:27.860]when it comes to finding involvement opportunities.
- [00:10:30.650]Please feel free to check out our website or find us on social media.
- [00:10:34.610]We would also love to meet you in person and help you find the right involvement
- [00:10:38.060]for you once you arrive on campus.
- [00:10:40.310]You can pop into either of our two office locations located in the Nebraska
- [00:10:44.570]union, on city campus, and the Nebraska East union on East campus.
- [00:10:48.950]We are also happy to answer any questions you may have in the meantime.
- [00:10:52.670]Those questions can be sent to the email address involved@unl.edu,
- [00:10:57.890]and we will respond as quickly as we can.
- [00:11:00.740]Thanks for joining us today and go big red.
