- [00:00:02.600]Good afternoon and welcome to our presentation
- [00:00:06.220]on Counseling and Psychological Services
- [00:00:11.130]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:14.750]We like to think of mental health as being just as important
- [00:00:18.380]as physical health issues and concerns.
- [00:00:21.330]We understand that mental health issues affect
- [00:00:24.420]the way one acts, thinks, and feels, and is essential
- [00:00:29.240]to how you manage the stresses that you're facing
- [00:00:32.100]in your life and making the choices and relating to others.
- [00:00:37.150]As you can see, we have a team of individuals ranging
- [00:00:42.130]from psychologists and counselors
- [00:00:43.930]who work together collaboratively
- [00:00:46.510]to provide students with the services that they need.
- [00:00:49.900]We look at ways in which we can explore feelings
- [00:00:53.440]and thoughts to help improve the mental wellbeing
- [00:00:58.230]of the young scholars that we deal with.
- [00:01:00.770]And by wellbeing, I mean psychological
- [00:01:03.500]and emotional wellbeing.
- [00:01:07.380]We're located at 550 North Ninth Street.
- [00:01:11.380]We're on the second floor of the University Health Center.
- [00:01:14.870]We're seven minutes from the Union.
- [00:01:16.590]And we'd like to say, during the summer
- [00:01:18.390]we have the coolest air conditioning on campus.
- [00:01:22.640]So how can CAPS help you?
- [00:01:25.520]Well, we have a variety of services that the psychologists
- [00:01:28.600]and counselors work collaboratively together
- [00:01:31.940]to provide the students with.
- [00:01:33.460]And that includes Individual Counseling,
- [00:01:35.860]Group Counseling Workshops, Couples Counseling,
- [00:01:39.800]Crisis Intervention, as well as Let's Talk.
- [00:01:43.170]We do have some other services that are more specialized
- [00:01:46.950]in the form of Alcohol and Drug Services,
- [00:01:49.680]Eating Disorder Services, Online Screenings,
- [00:01:52.570]and Outreach Presentations, such as this
- [00:01:55.510]that we do on campus.
- [00:01:58.640]So what kind of concerns can CAPS help you with?
- [00:02:03.590]We like to say we can help with almost everything
- [00:02:06.040]and anything from depression, anxiety, diversity issues,
- [00:02:09.860]body image and eating concerns,
- [00:02:12.850]grief and trauma related concerns,
- [00:02:15.310]homesickness adjustment issues,
- [00:02:17.650]relationship concerns, sexual identity and orientation,
- [00:02:22.120]social justice issues, and family of origin issues.
- [00:02:26.110]So we cover the full gamut.
- [00:02:30.120]We understand that we cannot be available 24 hours a day
- [00:02:34.420]so we worked to provide you
- [00:02:38.710]with an on-call counselor
- [00:02:41.860]that can be assessed through 402-472-7450.
- [00:02:47.520]Follow the prompts and you'll receive immediate help
- [00:02:50.360]and support for your struggle.
- [00:02:52.410]Now, keep in mind, if you're having
- [00:02:54.100]a medical emergency, call 911.
- [00:03:00.310]Who is eligible for our services?
- [00:03:02.750]All students that are enrolled at University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:06.900]And counseling services are available to those individuals,
- [00:03:10.920]both undergraduate, graduate, and professional students
- [00:03:13.580]at no charge when they pay student fees.
- [00:03:17.080]Now I have to add this caveat to the presentation.
- [00:03:20.080]Mandated drug and alcohol services
- [00:03:22.530]aren't covered by student fees.
- [00:03:25.210]These services will incur a charge on your NCard.
- [00:03:31.220]With all of that being said,
- [00:03:33.010]we like to say here at CAPS,
- [00:03:35.007]"We help you get out of your own way."
- [00:03:40.110]What to expect for routine counseling.
- [00:03:44.400]Approach to individual counseling,
- [00:03:46.360]approach to group counseling,
- [00:03:47.640]that's what I'll talk about here.
- [00:03:50.550]Individually, short-term clinical model
- [00:03:54.550]for individual counseling, or you have a range
- [00:03:57.190]of five to eight sessions.
- [00:03:59.330]Each student is given an individualized treatment plan
- [00:04:02.570]that best fits their needs.
- [00:04:04.720]And the clinicians working here at CAPS continually assess
- [00:04:08.370]and evaluate the progress of the individual
- [00:04:11.110]to see if they're providing them with the best treatment.
- [00:04:15.590]As for our group counseling program,
- [00:04:17.560]we have a robust group counseling program.
- [00:04:20.210]If a student participates in this process,
- [00:04:24.110]they are engaged in weekly sessions
- [00:04:27.940]that last the duration of the academic semester.
- [00:04:31.170]CAPS also variety provides a variety of drop-in groups,
- [00:04:35.470]workshops, and other short-term group counseling options.
