- [00:00:04.780]Hi there.
- [00:00:05.613]My name is Kristy Saunders.
- [00:00:06.640]I am the assistant director of the Husker Hub.
- [00:00:09.510]I just want to say a big welcome to UNL
- [00:00:11.830]and we're so happy to have you here.
- [00:00:13.950]If you do not know already,
- [00:00:15.040]the Husker Hub is the one-stop shop on campus
- [00:00:17.870]where you and your family
- [00:00:19.790]can come to get questions answered
- [00:00:21.160]regarding your course registration,
- [00:00:23.150]academic transcripts, your student bill
- [00:00:25.650]and of course your scholarships and financial aid.
- [00:00:28.510]So today I want to talk about a few things
- [00:00:30.270]but the main things we're going to cover
- [00:00:31.670]are the importance of the FAFSA,
- [00:00:34.060]how and when to file it,
- [00:00:35.970]some important dates
- [00:00:37.590]as well as of course some common dates you should know
- [00:00:40.990]when it comes to paying your bill
- [00:00:42.730]and registering for classes.
- [00:00:45.960]But first to start off, the financial aid process.
- [00:00:49.120]In order to start this process
- [00:00:50.750]you're first going to need to file the FAFSA.
- [00:00:53.250]If you have not already done so
- [00:00:54.780]you're going to need to make sure that you obtain an FSA ID,
- [00:00:58.670]which is basically a fancy way of saying login information,
- [00:01:02.330]for both yourself as well as your parents if applicable
- [00:01:05.500]and file that FAFSA at either fafsa.gov
- [00:01:09.120]or the parent website, studentaid.gov.
- [00:01:12.820]And the important thing with the FAFSA
- [00:01:15.060]is to remember that first F of that acronym
- [00:01:17.470]which is free,
- [00:01:18.630]the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
- [00:01:21.770]You should never have to pay to file the FAFSA.
- [00:01:24.720]So if you were on a website
- [00:01:26.250]that asks for your credit card information
- [00:01:29.490]to pay a filing fee,
- [00:01:31.660]wrong spot, get out of there and make sure you're going to
- [00:01:35.640]the website that has dot gov at the end.
- [00:01:39.130]So the reason why this is so important
- [00:01:40.213]is that FAFSA is used for a variety of things.
- [00:01:43.650]The main thing is for things such as federal aid
- [00:01:47.550]which you can be eligible for grants and scholarships
- [00:01:50.570]that we consider to be called gift aid
- [00:01:52.640]meaning that aid that you do not need to repay.
- [00:01:55.650]So for federal you can be eligible for federal grants
- [00:01:59.020]such as Pell Grant
- [00:02:00.050]or the Federal Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant
- [00:02:04.750]as well as for state and university funds.
- [00:02:08.040]And many scholarships actually do need the FAFSA on file
- [00:02:11.630]in order to help determine your financial need.
- [00:02:13.940]So if you're applying for external scholarships
- [00:02:16.440]or even for scholarships
- [00:02:17.640]further up into your university career,
- [00:02:20.540]you will need this FAFSA on file.
- [00:02:23.760]Another thing you could be eligible for with the FAFSA
- [00:02:25.810]is what's called Federal Work Study.
- [00:02:27.550]Many of you may already see this on your award letter.
- [00:02:31.040]The Federal Work Study program is this amazing program
- [00:02:34.020]that allows for you to apply for,
- [00:02:36.220]work a federally funded job
- [00:02:38.320]while you are enrolled in school.
- [00:02:40.380]These are primarily on campus work positions
- [00:02:43.440]that give you a lot of networking opportunities
- [00:02:45.890]and a great way to beef up your,
- [00:02:47.660]beef up your resume
- [00:02:49.220]when you're going to look for jobs after you graduate.
- [00:02:52.200]So you indicate your interest on the FAFSA
- [00:02:54.400]and eligibility is determined by the FAFSA.
- [00:02:57.460]Something to note about this
- [00:02:58.980]is that if you see that award out there,
- [00:03:00.950]it is not credited directly to your bill.
- [00:03:03.400]Instead it is earned by hours worked
- [00:03:05.970]through a position that you apply for and are hired for
- [00:03:08.930]and you earn that money through a biweekly paycheck.
- [00:03:12.320]So if you see that out there,
- [00:03:13.830]do not plan on that applying directly to your bill.
- [00:03:18.630]If you're interested in working on campus
- [00:03:21.080]while you are a student,
- [00:03:22.660]if you have Federal Work Study
- [00:03:24.140]or if you are someone
- [00:03:25.230]who is not a Federal Work Study student
- [00:03:26.900]but would like to work on campus,
- [00:03:28.780]get acquainted with Handshake.
- [00:03:30.750]This is our job search tool for university positions.
- [00:03:35.430]We are actually hiring here in the Husker Hub.
- [00:03:37.590]So if you're interested in working for us,
- [00:03:39.860]we actually employ both Federal Work Study
- [00:03:41.820]and non-Federal Work Study students.
- [00:03:43.810]So if you just go to go.unl.edu/handshake
- [00:03:47.900]it will take you to that site and you can apply there.
- [00:03:51.660]You need to be enrolled in classes.
- [00:03:53.490]So make sure you do this
- [00:03:55.010]after you go through the entire NSC process.
- [00:03:58.900]Another big aspect of the FAFSA is also for loans.
- [00:04:02.470]So you actually can be eligible
- [00:04:03.850]for student and parent loans if applicable.
- [00:04:06.990]As a student you can be entered,
- [00:04:08.550]you actually could be eligible for two different loans.
- [00:04:11.020]One is called the Subsidized Loan
- [00:04:12.880]which they need based loan due to it not accruing interest
- [00:04:16.690]while you are enrolled in school,
- [00:04:18.520]and an unsubsidized loan.
- [00:04:20.640]You as the student are the borrower
- [00:04:22.870]and the eligibility is actually determined by the FAFSA
- [00:04:25.900]for which type of loan you are eligible for.
- [00:04:29.240]Typically you're first-year students
- [00:04:31.087]you will be eligible for about $5,500 a year
- [00:04:34.970]and as you move up in your academic career
- [00:04:37.350]that amount will go up with you.
- [00:04:39.820]So you actually could be eligible
- [00:04:41.080]for more funds and loans in the future.
- [00:04:44.010]Repayment does not start until six months
- [00:04:46.330]after you graduate
- [00:04:47.870]or unless you enroll in fewer than six credit hours
- [00:04:51.010]in a semester.
- [00:04:52.150]So if you ever think you're going to enroll
- [00:04:54.010]in fewer than six credit hours, please give us a call.
- [00:04:57.050]We want to make sure that we prepare you for that.
- [00:04:59.700]And finally, the biggest mistake hands down
- [00:05:03.460]that we see students make
- [00:05:04.810]when looking at loans
- [00:05:06.050]is they make step the loans in their MyRED
- [00:05:08.810]but they don't actually complete what's called
- [00:05:10.890]the Master Promissory Note
- [00:05:12.720]and the Entrance Loan Counseling at studentloans.gov
- [00:05:16.560]or the parent website, studentaid.gov.
- [00:05:19.700]Without completing those two items
- [00:05:21.470]we can not disperse the loans.
- [00:05:24.160]So it is incredibly important
- [00:05:25.960]that if you are accepting loans
- [00:05:27.650]or if you've already accepted those loans
- [00:05:29.890]that you go in and complete those two checklist items.
- [00:05:34.440]Now for parents, if you're interested
- [00:05:36.320]there also is a loan that you can take out
- [00:05:38.360]on behalf of your student
- [00:05:39.830]to help offset the cost of higher education.
- [00:05:42.710]This is called the PLUS Loan Option
- [00:05:44.820]that you will see on your student's award package.
- [00:05:47.690]The student cannot accept this on your behalf
- [00:05:49.860]so don't worry.
- [00:05:50.980]Even if it's on the MyRED account, they cannot accept it.
- [00:05:54.820]In order for you to actually get this PLUS Loan
- [00:05:58.520]you actually need to complete
- [00:05:59.450]a separate application at studentloans.gov
- [00:06:02.160]or the parent website, studentaid.gov.
- [00:06:05.380]After you go through a credit check
- [00:06:07.050]and the application process,
- [00:06:08.730]you then will have to also sign that Master Promissory Note
- [00:06:11.760]in order for us to disperse those funds.
- [00:06:14.030]You do not need to accept the full amount
- [00:06:15.940]that is offered to you.
- [00:06:17.010]So if you were ever curious about
- [00:06:19.340]how to determine how much you might need
- [00:06:21.680]in order to pay your bill,
- [00:06:24.420]feel free to give us a call.
- [00:06:25.470]We're happy to help you figure out
- [00:06:27.450]how much you should borrow and how to determine that.
- [00:06:32.380]But here are some dates that I always like to highlight
- [00:06:34.560]for new students coming in for the first time.
- [00:06:37.490]So when you're looking at the academic calendar,
- [00:06:40.020]which you can find on our website,
- [00:06:41.800]there's a few things that I also have to point out.
- [00:06:43.940]One, as you probably remember,
- [00:06:46.030]there's a lot of priority deadlines
- [00:06:47.690]when it comes to financial aid,
- [00:06:49.100]one of which is called
- [00:06:49.980]the Priority Deadline for Filing the FAFSA.
- [00:06:52.350]This year it was pushed until May 1st.
- [00:06:54.970]For all future years,
- [00:06:56.050]you're going to be looking at an April 1st deadline.
- [00:06:58.870]And so yes, you heard correctly,
- [00:07:00.530]that deadline, that priority deadline is the same
- [00:07:03.560]for whether you're an incoming student
- [00:07:05.770]or if you are a returning student.
- [00:07:08.600]So for my Nebraska residents watching this,
- [00:07:10.720]if you are eligible for the Nebraska Promise Program
- [00:07:13.920]you will need to make sure that you're filing your FAFSA
- [00:07:16.530]by the April 1st deadline.
- [00:07:18.700]And for those of you who are not eligible for that program
- [00:07:20.790]whether you're out of state
- [00:07:22.020]or just not meeting those eligibility criteria,
- [00:07:24.690]you could still be eligible
- [00:07:26.090]for a variety of grants and gift aid
- [00:07:28.580]if you file your FAFSA by that priority deadline.
- [00:07:31.210]So it's very important
- [00:07:32.550]to keep April 1st in the back of your mind.
- [00:07:35.300]Another date I'd like to point out to you
- [00:07:36.890]is this August 25th.
- [00:07:38.340]That's going to be when your first bill is generated.
- [00:07:41.010]So that's when you can go into MyRED
- [00:07:42.730]and see what you currently owe.
- [00:07:44.470]It is going to be due on the 12th of the following month.
- [00:07:47.690]So September 12th is that first due date.
- [00:07:50.420]That is also the deadline
- [00:07:51.870]for when you can sign up for the Husker Payment Plan.
- [00:07:54.850]So if you're looking to split up
- [00:07:56.420]your remaining balance into three parts
- [00:07:59.800]then you're gonna want to make sure
- [00:08:00.970]to sign up for the Husker Payment Plan each semester
- [00:08:04.160]since you do have to sign up on a semester basis.
- [00:08:07.370]And the reason why this is all important
- [00:08:09.033]is that until you have your bill cleared
- [00:08:12.230]or until you're signed up for the Husker Payment Plan
- [00:08:15.050]and are making regular payments,
- [00:08:16.730]you will not be able to register for the next semester.
- [00:08:19.910]So priority registration comes up in October.
- [00:08:23.750]So if you just make sure
- [00:08:24.750]that you are able to either pay the bill
- [00:08:27.780]or have plans to lift that balance hold by that point.
- [00:08:32.110]If you have any questions about that
- [00:08:33.640]especially after, towards the end of September
- [00:08:36.010]and you're not,
- [00:08:36.843]and you have any questions about how to pay your bill
- [00:08:38.720]or if you're going to be able to register, give us a call.
- [00:08:41.120]We're happy to help.
- [00:08:43.410]So finally, like I was saying this whole time,
- [00:08:45.310]give us a call.
- [00:08:46.160]We are here for you.
- [00:08:47.190]That is why we are here.
- [00:08:49.340]We want to make sure that you can get through
- [00:08:51.810]all of these very complex processes as easily as possible.
- [00:08:56.160]So you can give us a call.
- [00:08:57.740]Our number is 402-472-2030.
- [00:09:01.460]You can stop by in person,
- [00:09:02.980]we're on the first floor
- [00:09:04.050]of the Canfield Administration Building,
- [00:09:06.030]or you can email us at huskerhub@unl.edu.
- [00:09:10.090]The absolute easiest way to get in contact with us
- [00:09:12.890]is actually through our virtual queue.
- [00:09:15.260]If you go to our website,
- [00:09:16.820]which is huskerhub.unl.edu.
- [00:09:19.960]You can log in and meet with a specialist
- [00:09:22.180]anytime between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
- [00:09:27.540]So if you want to make sure
- [00:09:28.970]that you are talking with a specialist
- [00:09:30.650]and you get all your questions answered,
- [00:09:32.260]hop on in that queue as well.
- [00:09:35.160]And with that
- [00:09:36.360]I want to wish you the most fun time this summer
- [00:09:39.950]and starting this whole new chapter of your life.
- [00:09:42.350]We are so incredibly excited to have you with us.
