- [00:00:00.450]Farmers and agronomists have been working
- [00:00:02.480]with the Nebraska Extension for decades,
- [00:00:04.860]to try new technologies and increase profitability
- [00:00:08.340]through the Nebraska On-farm Research Network.
- [00:00:11.540]And with the 2021 research season about to begin,
- [00:00:15.150]Extension Educator Laura Thompson joins us now
- [00:00:17.880]with an update.
- [00:00:19.110]Laura, appreciate you being with us today.
- [00:00:21.320]Give us an overview of this program
- [00:00:23.290]and exactly how it works.
- [00:00:26.050]Yeah, so On-Farm Research efforts
- [00:00:27.950]began in Nebraska Extension over 30 years ago,
- [00:00:30.820]and since that time has really grown
- [00:00:32.620]to be a statewide program.
- [00:00:34.640]The Nebraska On-farm Research Network
- [00:00:36.510]is supported by our Nebraska Corn Board,
- [00:00:38.470]Nebraska Corn Growers Association,
- [00:00:40.630]Nebraska Dry Bean Commission, and Nebraska Soybean board.
- [00:00:43.810]And participating farmers and agronomists worked closely
- [00:00:46.780]with Nebraska Extension
- [00:00:48.470]to test and evaluate different products
- [00:00:50.610]and production practices,
- [00:00:51.940]that impact their farms' productivity,
- [00:00:53.680]profitability, and longterm sustainability.
- [00:00:57.150]Can you share some examples
- [00:00:58.770]of the types of research participating producers try?
- [00:01:03.160]Yeah, so farmers are really innovative
- [00:01:04.900]and so each year farmers and agronomists
- [00:01:07.340]evaluate or are interested in looking at a wide variety
- [00:01:10.980]of research topics.
- [00:01:12.080]So those include things like seeding rate and date,
- [00:01:15.210]evaluating different technologies,
- [00:01:17.150]things like multi-hybrid planting, active downforce,
- [00:01:20.410]variable-rate seeding, variable rate nutrient applications.
- [00:01:23.610]Looking at the impact of cover crops on soil quality,
- [00:01:26.970]as well as the subsequent crops yields in economics.
- [00:01:30.240]And nitrogen management is always a critical issue
- [00:01:33.570]that's has a lot of studies looking at this topic.
- [00:01:36.760]Looking at how in-season applications
- [00:01:38.720]or different technologies,
- [00:01:40.240]such as crop models or remote sensing,
- [00:01:42.520]can help us better manage nitrogen fertilizer inputs
- [00:01:45.450]and have more efficient nitrogen fertilizing.
- [00:01:48.220]Definitely garnering some valuable information there.
- [00:01:50.650]So why do farmers choose to participate
- [00:01:53.390]in the On-farm Research Network?
- [00:01:56.660]Yeah, so farmers that are participating in the program
- [00:01:59.490]are really generating research results
- [00:02:01.190]that are relevant for their operation.
- [00:02:03.590]So the studies are being conducted on their farm
- [00:02:06.590]with their growing environment, their soils,
- [00:02:09.200]their weather conditions that they experience,
- [00:02:11.160]and their production practices.
- [00:02:12.670]So the research results
- [00:02:13.720]are really relevant to their operation.
- [00:02:16.490]Farmers note that they really enjoy being able to network
- [00:02:19.480]with other innovative producers
- [00:02:21.610]and that they enjoy being able to work closely
- [00:02:23.600]with Nebraska Extension to conduct the research.
- [00:02:26.580]So Nebraska Extension works closely
- [00:02:28.480]to help set up the trials, help collect data,
- [00:02:30.960]help analyze the results.
- [00:02:32.600]And the goal is really to be able to generate research
- [00:02:35.130]that is robust and that farmers can have confidence in
- [00:02:38.920]at the end of the season.
- [00:02:40.640]So participating farmers have, on average,
- [00:02:44.070]been able to increase their profit by $31 an acre
- [00:02:47.020]by putting their research results into practice.
- [00:02:50.280]That's impressive,
- [00:02:51.410]an impressive number there.
- [00:02:52.910]Thank you so much.
- [00:02:53.780]That's University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Educator,
- [00:02:56.900]Laura Thompson.
- [00:02:58.030]Good luck in the research.
