- [00:00:06.100]Hi, I'm Kathy Anderson, and a professor here
- [00:00:08.050]in the Department of Animal Science
- [00:00:09.440]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:10.940]I've been overseeing the Horse Judging Team
- [00:00:12.380]ever since I came here in 1991
- [00:00:14.160]and I've seen the horse judging competitions
- [00:00:16.280]go through a lot of changes over the years.
- [00:00:18.520]Back in the early 80s,
- [00:00:20.210]it's kinda when the contest kinda started happening.
- [00:00:23.080]And the first one was the one
- [00:00:24.270]at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
- [00:00:26.290]At that time, not really many programs filled
- [00:00:29.490]of the straight Horse Judging Team.
- [00:00:31.150]And us here at Nebraska pretty much did that,
- [00:00:33.470]where typically, they take some of the individuals
- [00:00:35.570]that were on the livestock team and take them over
- [00:00:37.400]to judge horses at the Congress.
- [00:00:39.330]Over the years, some contests added.
- [00:00:41.300]Probably the next big one that was added
- [00:00:42.790]was one at the AQHA World Show.
- [00:00:45.840]And then, since then we also have discipline contest
- [00:00:48.620]with the Paint Horse Association,
- [00:00:50.390]Credit Horse Association, Cowboy Association.
- [00:00:53.070]Arabian Nationals has a contest,
- [00:00:54.970]Paint Horse Association has a contest.
- [00:00:57.040]So, you can see the judging program has really grown
- [00:00:59.210]across the nation.
- [00:01:00.460]Most of the time now many programs do fill
- [00:01:02.560]just a straight Horse Judging Team
- [00:01:04.500]and compete in a variety of those continents.
- [00:01:06.610]Here at Nebraska we really have two different classes,
- [00:01:09.240]a spring class called 300 E
- [00:01:11.174]and a 400 level class in the fall.
- [00:01:13.900]So we try to recruit students
- [00:01:15.540]for those classes, in those classes, and anyone that's
- [00:01:18.750]in our Equine Option needs to take 300 E class.
- [00:01:21.930]So ideally it's set up
- [00:01:23.720]that they do the introductory class in the spring
- [00:01:25.980]and there are two potential contests
- [00:01:27.730]that they could attend,
- [00:01:28.870]more or less to get the students piqued with.
- [00:01:30.920]Then our main contests are all in the fall
- [00:01:33.170]and that's where we could try to fill our senior team.
- [00:01:36.340]In the horse judging,
- [00:01:37.173]we can have a team of five individuals and four
- [00:01:38.920]of their scores count.
- [00:01:40.650]Something else that has changed
- [00:01:41.820]over the years with our horse judging contest
- [00:01:43.757]are the way that they've been formatted and put together.
- [00:01:46.930]Initially the contest really we're heavy
- [00:01:49.040]on the halter horses, heavy on judging confirmation.
- [00:01:55.150]And so we might have a contest of half the classes say
- [00:01:57.740]at least six classes that were all confirmation classes
- [00:02:00.510]and then the performance classes would balance a contest out
- [00:02:03.430]of pleasure horsemanship, reigning,
- [00:02:06.030]and those types of things.
- [00:02:07.350]Well kind of a lot of the coaches association
- [00:02:09.660]and the groups putting the contest on looked
- [00:02:11.840]at this was an opportunity to train future judges
- [00:02:14.530]for those different associations, different disciplines.
- [00:02:18.020]So we, since now do only about three to four halter classes
- [00:02:22.154]and then the balance of several performance classes.
- [00:02:24.950]And pretty much now we have
- [00:02:27.370]to have the students ready to judge just about anything
- [00:02:29.630]and everything you might judge at a horse show.
- [00:02:31.750]So that includes all the regular performance classes
- [00:02:34.350]of trail, Western riding, pleasure horsemanship,
- [00:02:38.000]and for the world show,
- [00:02:39.000]we even have to have them ready to judge many
- [00:02:41.040]of the cattle classes, such as the roping classes,
- [00:02:43.500]cal horse, and those types of things.
- [00:02:45.170]So, it does make these students
- [00:02:46.410]a very, very well-rounded individual
- [00:02:48.608]and be having a good understanding
- [00:02:50.340]of all those different kinds of contests.
- [00:02:52.160]So for the students, we try
- [00:02:53.560]to recruit them out of our classes,
- [00:02:54.930]however, we've been tremendously fortunate
- [00:02:57.160]or I've been tremendously fortunate over the last years
- [00:02:59.740]to have gotten the support
- [00:03:00.810]from the department head to have a graduate student.
- [00:03:03.340]And a graduate student has been a huge asset
- [00:03:05.450]because they've been able to focus their time and energy
- [00:03:08.360]on our judging team and have done a great job
- [00:03:10.440]of really recruiting more individuals.
- [00:03:12.350]So, if you look down the hallway where our pictures
- [00:03:14.020]and stuff are, you'll see some years, that yes,
- [00:03:15.670]we've been lucky to have three or four individuals.
- [00:03:18.460]Well with Brooke Parrish,
- [00:03:20.060]who's our current graduate student,
- [00:03:21.330]she really went out and recruited a lot,
- [00:03:23.570]did a lot of recruiting early this fall.
- [00:03:25.560]So we were fortunate to have a group
- [00:03:27.010]of eight students this fall,
- [00:03:28.520]which was the most that we've had in some time.
- [00:03:30.530]And so that's been a really big asset.
- [00:03:32.610]Something that focus has changed a little bit also,
- [00:03:35.260]is that we're trying to pull those students in younger,
- [00:03:37.840]as freshmen, sophomores, maybe juniors,
- [00:03:41.530]instead of waiting till they're seniors,
- [00:03:43.070]because then we get them when they're young,
- [00:03:45.940]they tend maybe not to be quite as busy.
- [00:03:48.070]And so that's been a really good benefit to the program.
- [00:03:51.160]And so that's just a little bit
- [00:03:52.340]about our horse judging program here at Nebraska.
- [00:03:55.750]Hi, everyone.
- [00:03:56.583]I'm Brooke Parrish, a second year master's student here
- [00:03:58.870]in the Animal Science Department.
- [00:04:00.690]I'm also the Assistant coach of the Horse Judging Team.
- [00:04:03.670]I'm going to be giving you a little recap
- [00:04:05.400]of how the contest went this year for the team members.
- [00:04:08.400]It's our first contest of the year,
- [00:04:09.930]was the American Paint Horse Association World Show.
- [00:04:13.030]The team ended up eighth overall,
- [00:04:14.660]and Kathlyn broke in the top 10 in two categories
- [00:04:17.810]as well as getting eight overall.
- [00:04:20.350]Although we didn't have the Quarter Horse Congress
- [00:04:22.250]this year, we still were able to go
- [00:04:24.480]to the American Quarter Horse World Show
- [00:04:26.970]and the National Reining Horse Association Contest.
- [00:04:30.580]These two contests, we're actually together this year
- [00:04:34.310]which is unlike any other.
- [00:04:36.040]So, the first contest the kids competed on this trip,
- [00:04:39.280]was in the Reining Contest.
- [00:04:41.070]They ended up eighth overall as a team.
- [00:04:43.510]Then in the World Show Contest,
- [00:04:45.250]they were fourth in performance,
- [00:04:47.090]seventh in reasons and halter,
- [00:04:48.850]and then fourth overall.
- [00:04:50.480]We also had Kathlyn end up fifth overall,
- [00:04:52.824]Alyssa Waits was third overall in the limited division
- [00:04:56.200]and Hannah and Ali both broke
- [00:04:58.180]into the top 20 in their respective categories.
- [00:05:01.400]We're super excited with all of the success
- [00:05:03.540]that the team has had this year,
- [00:05:04.810]and we're excited to see how they do next year.
- [00:05:07.750]Hi, I'm Ali Klapal.
- [00:05:09.560]I'm from Omaha, Nebraska,
- [00:05:11.410]and I'm a freshman this year at UNL,
- [00:05:13.750]studying Animal Science with Equine Science Option.
- [00:05:17.900]This year, I decided to join the Horse Judging Team,
- [00:05:21.010]in hopes of finding new friends
- [00:05:22.860]and bettering my writing and judging skills.
- [00:05:26.420]Whenever, I found something much more.
- [00:05:28.630]I found a new family,
- [00:05:29.880]with a whole bunch of different crew members.
- [00:05:32.550]We travel to different parts
- [00:05:34.510]of the United States to judge different horses,
- [00:05:37.130]including the Page Show, and AQHA World Show.
- [00:05:40.980]I ended up bettering my skills in the judging world
- [00:05:44.880]and I plan on using these in the future.
- [00:05:47.720]Thank you.
- [00:05:48.800]Hi, I'm Kristianna Muller,
- [00:05:50.680]and I am from Papillion, Nebraska.
- [00:05:52.700]I'm currently a Veterinary Science Major here
- [00:05:56.250]and I decided join the Horse Judging Team this year
- [00:05:59.200]because my friend, Claire here actually encouraged me to.
- [00:06:02.670]I didn't start out with a lot of horse experience
- [00:06:05.810]but I really grew in my knowledge of the horse industry here
- [00:06:09.750]and really enjoyed the time that I had.
- [00:06:12.330]Hi, I'm Claire Goestchkes,
- [00:06:13.780]a sophomore at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:06:15.910]I'm currently studying Animal Science,
- [00:06:18.210]and I'm from Bellevue, Nebraska.
- [00:06:20.220]I joined the Horse Judging Team to further my knowledge
- [00:06:22.730]in a different part of the horse industry than I am used to.
- [00:06:25.690]I grew up as a hunter/jumper, and this is the type
- [00:06:28.410]of the horse industry that I've never known.
- [00:06:30.080]So, getting to learn the APAJ and AQAJ style of riding,
- [00:06:33.780]has really helped (giggles) depth
- [00:06:36.500]in my knowledge of horses and the horse industry.
- [00:06:39.840]Hi, my name is Kathlyn Hauxwell.
- [00:06:41.800]I'm from Cook, Nebraska and I am a junior
- [00:06:44.430]in the Animal Science Department with that focus
- [00:06:47.060]and Food Animal Production Management.
- [00:06:49.630]Growing up, I showered horses
- [00:06:51.040]and I joined the Horse Study Team just
- [00:06:53.280]so I can become a better rider as well
- [00:06:55.130]as support my university.
- [00:06:56.730]We had a great season traveling to Fort Worth
- [00:06:59.300]and Oklahoma city and made the best out of this semester.
- [00:07:03.040]I had a great time getting to know everyone on my team.
- [00:07:06.100]It was a great opportunity to get
- [00:07:07.790]to see some amazing horses, and I couldn't have asked
- [00:07:10.090]for a better time to represent
- [00:07:12.000]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:07:15.440]Hi, I'm Hannah Wiese, I'm from Papillion, Nebraska
- [00:07:18.930]and I'm an Elementary Education Major.
- [00:07:22.530]Being on the Horse Judging Team allows you to travel
- [00:07:24.770]to different shows and network
- [00:07:26.710]with different trainers and different people
- [00:07:29.230]in horse associations.
- [00:07:31.300]Also, it allows you to know what the judge is looking for.
- [00:07:34.950]Therefore, you can better your own writing skills.
- [00:07:38.390]Hello, my name is Alyssa Waits.
- [00:07:40.080]I'm from Chadron, Nebraska, and my major is Animal Science
- [00:07:42.820]with an emphasis in Equine.
- [00:07:44.770]Last year, I got asked to be on the team
- [00:07:47.110]to go to the Interactive Security Contest,
- [00:07:49.440]and I got to meet Casey Deary,
- [00:07:50.980]which was the best time of my life.
- [00:07:53.440]I joined the team this year because I,
- [00:07:55.200]in the future I want to get my NHA Card,
- [00:07:57.380]and my 4-H Judging Card.
- [00:07:59.580]The Horse Judging Team has provided me with real life horses
- [00:08:03.460]and contests and everything to improve my skills
- [00:08:06.330]in horse judging, and that's all I could ever ask for.
- [00:08:08.841](upbeat music)
- [00:08:09.989](horse panting)
- [00:08:27.290]Hi, my name's Payton Schiller
- [00:08:29.300]and I'm from West Point, Nebraska.
- [00:08:31.390]I'm a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:08:34.040]studying Animal Science.
- [00:08:35.870]When I came to the university,
- [00:08:37.420]I had no idea I'd be joining the Horse Judging Team.
- [00:08:40.290]But in her insight, it has been one
- [00:08:42.250]of the greatest opportunities that I have been able to have.
- [00:08:46.017]I have gained great speaking skills
- [00:08:48.350]and made very good connections within the horse industry.
- [00:08:53.140]Hi, I'm Jenna Glidden,
- [00:08:54.540]and I'm from Valley, Nebraska.
- [00:08:56.750]I'm majoring in Animal Science.
- [00:08:59.450]I joined the Horse Judging Team to improve my knowledge
- [00:09:01.980]of the Horse Show Industry.
- [00:09:05.090]A couple of my favorite memories of the year,
- [00:09:07.290]actually both happened at the World Show Contest.
- [00:09:09.910]The first would be, when the team placed fourth
- [00:09:13.720]in performance which was the first team category
- [00:09:16.120]that they got their name called out in.
- [00:09:18.100]Kathy and I actually had to tell them to go get up
- [00:09:20.850]and get the ribbons because they were so shocked and excited
- [00:09:24.130]that they just didn't even know what to do.
- [00:09:25.920]So, that was a really cool moment to see how excited all
- [00:09:29.240]of them were to break into the top five as a team together.
- [00:09:32.670]And then, at the World Show, after the award ceremony,
- [00:09:36.690]the team member of Kathlyn,
- [00:09:38.370]actually was showing at the World Show as well.
- [00:09:40.570]So, when the awards banquet was over,
- [00:09:42.790]we actually got to go over as a team
- [00:09:44.860]to the show pin, and watch her show in her class,
- [00:09:47.750]and that was just such a cool moment
- [00:09:49.360]to see everyone cheering for her and whistling.
- [00:09:52.050]And so, those are my two favorite memories from the year.
- [00:09:55.634](upbeat music)
