- [00:00:08.560]After graduating with a degree
- [00:00:10.130]in Business Administration,
- [00:00:11.850]Jack O'Holleran worked for a startup in California.
- [00:00:15.170]Three years later, he co-founded his first company.
- [00:00:18.460]Being a Husker, prepared me to start my own business
- [00:00:22.260]in a lot of ways.
- [00:00:23.093]And there's something about Nebraska football
- [00:00:25.440]about toughness, resilience, and giving it your all
- [00:00:28.510]that I think carried over very well
- [00:00:30.870]into being a founder of a company.
- [00:00:33.810]When you start companies, it's not always easy
- [00:00:36.400]and you have to fight through tough times.
- [00:00:38.460]Also, there's just an element of not giving up
- [00:00:42.370]and bringing your best every day to the plate
- [00:00:44.970]and that's what I learned as a Husker
- [00:00:46.700]and it's really helped me now as an entrepreneur
- [00:00:49.520]In 2013, Jack continued to show grit
- [00:00:53.010]as he taught himself to code.
- [00:00:54.950]He discovered his skill
- [00:00:56.260]made him a more impactful co-founder.
- [00:00:58.810]I think when you're working in a field,
- [00:01:00.870]it makes sense to go deep and learn
- [00:01:02.840]and actually learn not just how technology functions,
- [00:01:05.610]but be able to actually implement
- [00:01:07.280]and use some of these tools as a builder.
- [00:01:09.574](upbeat music)
- [00:01:12.300]I had the opportunity to personally recruit Jack
- [00:01:16.190]while he was in high school.
- [00:01:18.360]I could see that he had a foundation that was really strong.
- [00:01:21.290]And so if the house blew down,
- [00:01:24.190]there was still a foundation there
- [00:01:26.150]and he would just rebuild again.
- [00:01:28.320]Jack's company pivoted to become Aktana.
- [00:01:31.380]He spent nine years building Aktana
- [00:01:33.620]into a leading global technology platform
- [00:01:36.320]for pharmaceutical and biotech companies
- [00:01:39.180]before co-founding Skale labs in 2017.
- [00:01:43.527]We started Skale with the goal of helping
- [00:01:46.011]blockchain architecture and infrastructure grow
- [00:01:48.360]so that it can support hundreds of millions
- [00:01:50.790]or billions of users.
- [00:01:51.880]And the way that happens is blockchains
- [00:01:54.270]typically run with one database
- [00:01:56.550]where every computer runs the same software.
- [00:01:59.690]And imagine that's a highway,
- [00:02:00.740]there's just one lane of traffic and it's really secure,
- [00:02:03.570]you're gonna get there, but it's gonna be slow,
- [00:02:05.270]it's gonna be expensive.
- [00:02:07.100]The Skale network is designed so that
- [00:02:08.750]every application actually gets its own blockchain.
- [00:02:11.350]So what that is, it's just replicates
- [00:02:13.730]the way databases are structured in web two.
- [00:02:17.680]So if you are using Uber, DoorDash to order food
- [00:02:20.950]if you're on Facebook, guess what?
- [00:02:22.740]They don't share a backend databases,
- [00:02:24.840]they all have their own.
- [00:02:26.040]And what Skale does is it gives applications
- [00:02:29.060]a modern architectural environment that is blockchain
- [00:02:32.980]in a secure manner.
- [00:02:34.010]And so back to the analogy of a highway
- [00:02:36.460]instead of every car sharing the same highway
- [00:02:38.890]each car actually has its own lane
- [00:02:40.690]and can drive as fast as it wants.
- [00:02:42.350]And again, these lanes can all speak in real time
- [00:02:45.670]to the main highway so that you can have synergy
- [00:02:48.800]and interoperability with a larger database
- [00:02:52.800]while having agility and low costs
- [00:02:55.370]and high speeds and your own database.
- [00:02:57.723](upbeat music)
- [00:03:02.940]So Jack O'Holleran,
- [00:03:04.620]I haven't seen you in years, but congratulations
- [00:03:08.700]on winning the Nebraska Business Young Alumni Award
- [00:03:13.970]for the years of 2020 and 2021.
- [00:03:17.620]What an honor, man, and you know what?
- [00:03:19.520]I have to admit, I'm really not surprised.
- [00:03:22.210](upbeat music)
