- [00:00:07.930]Mike Dunlap started at the University
- [00:00:10.200]of Nebraska Lincoln in the 80s
- [00:00:12.140]with the goal of becoming an engineer.
- [00:00:15.230]However, he realized his natural talents were in business
- [00:00:18.740]after taking an accounting course.
- [00:00:20.950]My dad suggested that one semester
- [00:00:22.690]I should take an accounting class.
- [00:00:23.910]So I took Accounting, I think it's 106,
- [00:00:27.870]and we started off with like 60 kids, ended with nine,
- [00:00:31.360]and I think six of us passed the class.
- [00:00:32.910]And I did a relatively well with not a lot of effort
- [00:00:37.200]compared to some of my engineering classes,
- [00:00:39.270]and thought maybe this fits more in my abilities.
- [00:00:43.150]After graduating with degrees
- [00:00:44.780]in both finance and accounting,
- [00:00:46.450]he earned his Juris doctorate
- [00:00:48.330]and became a member of the Nebraska Bar Association.
- [00:00:51.730]I worked at Union Bank and Trust,
- [00:00:53.290]which my dad was a CEO of,
- [00:00:54.990]and he said, here's your desk,
- [00:00:57.140]and so I went over and put my stuff in my desk,
- [00:00:59.730]and then I went back to his office and said,
- [00:01:01.910]hey, you know, what do want me to do?
- [00:01:03.160]And he goes, I don't know, you figure it out.
- [00:01:05.080]And so I had an interest in investments,
- [00:01:08.390]and so I went over to the trust department
- [00:01:10.270]and said, hey I wanted to know if I could come over here
- [00:01:13.780]and work with you guys on the investment side.
- [00:01:15.560]So that's how I got started.
- [00:01:18.270]Mike used his talents
- [00:01:19.620]to start the business that became Nelnet in 1996.
- [00:01:23.050]I started off just acquiring student loans
- [00:01:25.320]and over time we also service student loans
- [00:01:28.669]and then originate student loans
- [00:01:30.940]and provide servicing and guarantee software
- [00:01:33.230]and student loan servicing software to other players.
- [00:01:36.040]And then over time, we looked at the educational market
- [00:01:39.210]and started to diversify across
- [00:01:40.690]the horizontal timeline of education.
- [00:01:43.000]We helped set up the 529 plan in Nebraska,
- [00:01:45.410]and we also do 529 plans in Alabama and Illinois also,
- [00:01:49.360]to help people save for school.
- [00:01:51.190]And then we've got a company called Facts
- [00:01:54.350]which helps with payment plans for K-12 schools
- [00:01:57.220]and for higher education and also grant and aid.
- [00:02:00.130]So over time we looked for different ways
- [00:02:02.130]we can diversify and now we've gotten
- [00:02:03.750]into high-speed fiber and real estate and other things.
- [00:02:09.610]Mike is a true entrepreneur to the ultimate sense.
- [00:02:14.500]There is not a problem that we run across
- [00:02:16.960]that he doesn't believe we could solve,
- [00:02:18.610]a business we couldn't run,
- [00:02:20.350]with the right people, the right capital,
- [00:02:22.830]you know, and the right innovation.
- [00:02:24.630]And so that whole aspect of entrepreneurship
- [00:02:26.810]is ingrained in everything he does
- [00:02:29.860]and we do as a company because of it.
- [00:02:33.970]So Mike is a lot of fun.
- [00:02:36.350]In fact, I would describe it as there's a little boy trapped
- [00:02:39.100]inside that giant mathematical, you know, business brain.
- [00:02:43.460]And so everything we do, there is an element of fun,
- [00:02:46.560]even in times that are tense.
- [00:02:48.090]And so throughout our history, we've had,
- [00:02:51.110]you know, a blast working and growing a company
- [00:02:54.650]and doing great things for the community.
- [00:02:56.387][Narrator] Mike's dedication to service can be seen
- [00:02:59.050]when you walk into the College of Business.
- [00:03:02.010]His support made the building possible.
- [00:03:05.600]One of our main values at Nelnet is to give back
- [00:03:08.080]to the communities we work in and work with.
- [00:03:10.420]I think it's key to try to keep the community vibrant
- [00:03:13.540]for our associates so they want to move
- [00:03:15.510]to Lincoln, they want to live in Lincoln,
- [00:03:16.960]they want to stay in Lincoln.
- [00:03:18.490]It's a great community,
- [00:03:19.450]and how can we make it greater in the future?
- [00:03:23.120]Mike, congratulations for being recognized
- [00:03:25.920]with the Nebraska Business Leadership Award
- [00:03:29.870]for 2020 and 2021.
- [00:03:32.355](lively music)
