- [00:00:06.513]A native of Omaha, Nebraska,
- [00:00:09.240]Allan Noddle graduated cum laude
- [00:00:11.530]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1962.
- [00:00:15.420]He credits one course for preparing him for his future.
- [00:00:19.390]The single best course I've ever taken in my entire life
- [00:00:23.710]was a course I took at UNL with the College of Business
- [00:00:27.330]and was called Business Speech.
- [00:00:29.210]It taught us how to communicate, pick a subject,
- [00:00:33.130]take a position, and how to convince somebody else
- [00:00:36.670]that your position was correct,
- [00:00:38.870]without any prior preparation in that regard.
- [00:00:42.300]And that single course was the one
- [00:00:44.420]that put me on the right track.
- [00:00:46.110]It was absolutely, to me, a life-changing event.
- [00:00:50.246]After serving in the US army in Germany,
- [00:00:53.340]Allan started working at IBM.
- [00:00:55.132]In the army, I ran a transceiver site
- [00:00:59.570]and I had all these machines from IBM
- [00:01:02.840]that we were learning how to program, et cetera.
- [00:01:05.520]At that point, I decided that this was really not for me,
- [00:01:09.010]and I gotta get into a people business.
- [00:01:10.683]So, Allan responded to a blinded newspaper ad
- [00:01:14.560]for a buying and merchandising position in Omaha.
- [00:01:18.180]About two days later, I get a call
- [00:01:20.620]from a company called Hinky Dinky,
- [00:01:23.810]and they said they had a terrific opportunity for me.
- [00:01:28.770]And I figured out right away,
- [00:01:31.290]food is something everybody's gonna have to have.
- [00:01:34.710]And here we are, 60 years later,
- [00:01:37.750]in the middle of a global pandemic
- [00:01:40.710]and one of the only enterprises that's doing well
- [00:01:44.650]is food stores.
- [00:01:45.913]Named the youngest Vice President
- [00:01:48.270]at Hinky Dinky, Allan was later elected
- [00:01:51.090]Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
- [00:01:54.460]He was then hired by Giant Foods to help them expand.
- [00:01:57.713][Nicholas Bertram] Everybody knew who Giant was
- [00:02:00.270]because Allan became our spokesperson
- [00:02:03.210]and very much became the face of the brand
- [00:02:05.150]and the local celebrity.
- [00:02:06.760]Allan was always in the stores with people,
- [00:02:09.020]knew their names, knew their families names.
- [00:02:11.490]And was just always an approachable, humble leader
- [00:02:14.550]who had very high expectations.
- [00:02:15.970]Giant grew significantly
- [00:02:18.260]and was acquired by Dutch grocer Royal Ahold.
- [00:02:22.230]Allan became President and CEO
- [00:02:24.500]of Ahold's USA Support Services Division.
- [00:02:28.010]In 1989, they came to me and said,
- [00:02:32.697]"We want you to join the corporate executive board.
- [00:02:35.760]And you're gonna be the first American
- [00:02:37.750]we've ever had serve in that capacity.
- [00:02:40.400]And there's only one catch."
- [00:02:42.070]And they said, "You have to move to Amsterdam
- [00:02:45.810]where our corporate headquarters is."
- [00:02:48.400]Not many people in the world will ever get the chance
- [00:02:51.420]or the experience to work for a global company.
- [00:02:54.280]And I jumped at that and it was an enriching experience
- [00:02:57.960]for me personally and professionally.
- [00:03:01.270]And our company was present
- [00:03:03.080]in 32 companies on four continents.
- [00:03:06.119]Officially retiring in 2002,
- [00:03:09.680]Allan continues to advise and give back.
- [00:03:12.515]The interesting thing is when I look back,
- [00:03:15.600]never in my career over 60 years that I ever had a bad job.
- [00:03:20.010]I had some bad days, but I never had a bad job.
- [00:03:25.330]I was lucky and blessed to be successful.
- [00:03:29.060]I learned real quickly,
- [00:03:30.830]that's even more fun than getting there,
- [00:03:33.660]was giving somebody else the experience that I had.
- [00:03:38.020]So I love getting there
- [00:03:39.780]but I even have more fun giving the money away
- [00:03:42.320]to see the reaction of other people.
