- [00:00:04.600]Well, good morning.
- [00:00:06.460]This is a favorite day of mine
- [00:00:10.250]because for a couple of reasons,
- [00:00:12.190]one, we're back together although we're still
- [00:00:15.150]a little thin in terms of attendance
- [00:00:17.350]which is to be expected given
- [00:00:19.360]we're still shepherding our way through the pandemic.
- [00:00:24.710]But I do wanna welcome everyone who is here in person
- [00:00:28.140]as well as those who are watching us virtually
- [00:00:31.810]the fun about this day is celebration.
- [00:00:34.960]And I am really looking forward to celebrating
- [00:00:39.270]all of those who've received awards today.
- [00:00:42.260]But also I think it says a bigger picture
- [00:00:44.990]about the work of the college.
- [00:00:46.990]I think you will hear today
- [00:00:48.380]and see today a celebration of staff, faculty
- [00:00:54.650]and some students, as well as a celebration
- [00:00:58.410]of our work in research, teaching and engagement.
- [00:01:03.190]And that really speaks to the importance
- [00:01:05.400]of the work of the college in impacting people's lives
- [00:01:09.695]and strengthening relationships.
- [00:01:12.361]And I really would like to think about this day
- [00:01:16.020]as a day that certainly we're recognizing individuals
- [00:01:19.406]and we're recognizing work,
- [00:01:21.860]but we're also recognizing all of us
- [00:01:24.210]because as a college, we're one big sum.
- [00:01:28.010]And when we recognize each other and lift each other up
- [00:01:31.852]we're lifting up the entire college.
- [00:01:34.550]So a really enjoyable day for us ahead, I think.
- [00:01:38.290]I wanna start by saying thank you
- [00:01:40.450]to all those who helped to put this event together
- [00:01:43.750]to Kaitlin, to Madison, to Melanie, to Haley.
- [00:01:49.210]A lot of work went into making sure
- [00:01:53.160]that we had everything in place and everyone in their place.
- [00:01:57.000]So I appreciate that very much.
- [00:01:58.840]I also wanna say a big thank you to IANR
- [00:02:02.070]for helping us with the live stream today.
- [00:02:06.120]So let's get to it.
- [00:02:08.405]We're gonna start with some staff awards
- [00:02:11.630]and how we're going to move forward is,
- [00:02:15.110]as your name is called, you will come to the stage
- [00:02:18.490]and rise up that set of stairs.
- [00:02:20.770]Kaitlin will give you your award.
- [00:02:22.098]And then I'm gonna ask you to come and stand next to me
- [00:02:24.780]at the podium while I say a few things about you
- [00:02:27.700]and read some comments from the people
- [00:02:29.922]who nominated the individual for the award.
- [00:02:33.000]Then Loren will take our picture
- [00:02:34.680]and then you can exit the stage on this side.
- [00:02:36.980]So I think that will keep things flowing.
- [00:02:40.010]And I recognize that we have many of our awardees
- [00:02:43.039]here in the audience,
- [00:02:44.841]but some of our awardees are virtual
- [00:02:47.230]which is perfectly fine.
- [00:02:48.719]We will recognize everybody.
- [00:02:51.930]You who are in attendance will have an opportunity
- [00:02:54.930]to say something after you receive your award.
- [00:02:58.062]So I would that everybody keep their masks in place
- [00:03:00.982]because we will have many people moving forward,
- [00:03:04.020]towards the podium.
- [00:03:05.210]You don't have to say anything if you don't want to
- [00:03:07.470]but if you want to, you will have an opportunity to do so.
- [00:03:11.890]All right, so let's get started.
- [00:03:17.580]So first, I we'd like to recognize our Annual Staff Awards.
- [00:03:22.380]And first I'm gonna call Lisa McConnell to the stage.
- [00:03:26.030]The Annual Staff Award recognizes a staff member
- [00:03:29.740]whose overall performance
- [00:03:31.560]has regularly exceeded expectations
- [00:03:34.077]and has reflected a high level of service,
- [00:03:36.874]trustworthiness and respect.
- [00:03:40.810]So here's a few things that were said about Lisa.
- [00:03:44.800]Lisa is an Office Assistant
- [00:03:46.460]in the Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies.
- [00:03:49.150]She is an excellent employee.
- [00:03:51.150]She is dependable, reliable, and always willing to help.
- [00:03:55.740]She does everything with a smile.
- [00:03:58.250]During the difficult COVID months,
- [00:04:00.290]Lisa was the CYAF frontline worker.
- [00:04:03.070]She made sure we had all the PPE needed in the department.
- [00:04:06.620]She took care of so many orders
- [00:04:08.105]and even made home deliveries
- [00:04:10.138]when things were needed right away.
- [00:04:12.940]She is always thinking about faculty,
- [00:04:15.110]staff and students in our department
- [00:04:17.012]and what she can do to help them when they are in a bind.
- [00:04:21.120]When it is a busy time of year
- [00:04:22.478]and people are feeling overwhelmed,
- [00:04:24.660]Lisa notices and asks if she can help.
- [00:04:28.063]When Lisa offers to do something for someone,
- [00:04:31.040]she is accountable and gets it done.
- [00:04:33.710]Lisa goes above and beyond the call of duty.
- [00:04:36.330]We're lucky to have someone
- [00:04:37.714]with her dedication and compassion.
- [00:04:40.048]So congratulations, Lisa.
- [00:04:41.969]Pause right there for a picture.
- [00:04:49.306](audience applauds)
- [00:04:58.990]Next I will call to the stage, Zoe McManaman.
- [00:05:04.240]Zoe is the Office Assistant
- [00:05:05.829]for the Buros Center for Testing.
- [00:05:08.872]And while Zoe's coming to the stage.
- [00:05:11.030]Let me tell you a few things
- [00:05:13.240]that Zoe's nominators said about her.
- [00:05:17.360]Zoe is exceedingly diligent in carrying out
- [00:05:20.440]her job responsibilities.
- [00:05:22.510]She is organized, resourceful, and on time.
- [00:05:26.867]She consistently projects a positive image
- [00:05:30.412]of the Buros Center for Testing.
- [00:05:32.744]As the first point of contact for all who visit the center,
- [00:05:36.491]her demeanor is an excellent match.
- [00:05:39.660]Visitors and callers receive prompt attention.
- [00:05:42.841]She knows whom to call, to get things done
- [00:05:45.920]when outside help is needed
- [00:05:48.410]and continues to demonstrate initiative
- [00:05:50.950]in solving unique problems.
- [00:05:53.950]Now, one of Zoe's strongest qualities
- [00:05:56.676]is her advocacy for students.
- [00:05:59.450]This is a very small part of her official job
- [00:06:02.869]but one would not know it
- [00:06:04.780]by witnessing her day to day activities.
- [00:06:08.300]She shows a genuine interest
- [00:06:09.690]in all the graduate assistants at the center.
- [00:06:12.450]She is quick to help them with anything they need.
- [00:06:15.280]And she goes out of her way to help students
- [00:06:17.950]she encounters anywhere on campus.
- [00:06:20.750]Thank you, Zoe for your work for the center
- [00:06:23.530]and for students.
- [00:06:27.103](audience applauds)
- [00:06:37.791]Now we will move to some teaching awards.
- [00:06:40.850]And this is a big part of what we do.
- [00:06:43.520]And I hope you will enjoy hearing
- [00:06:46.000]about all the high quality teaching
- [00:06:48.549]and work of these faculty awardees.
- [00:06:51.752]First up is the College Distinguished Teaching Award.
- [00:06:56.310]This is an award given annually by the university
- [00:06:59.770]to recognize three members of the CEHS faculty
- [00:07:03.255]who have demonstrated distinguished teaching.
- [00:07:06.650]And this generally looks at the qualities
- [00:07:09.280]of a model teacher.
- [00:07:11.070]And a model teacher is one
- [00:07:13.110]who colleagues would send their students to observe
- [00:07:16.957]and work with as if their students had to follow
- [00:07:19.752]in the footsteps of only one teacher.
- [00:07:23.166]So these are the model teachers.
- [00:07:26.870]First, we're going to recognize Rochelle Dalla.
- [00:07:31.870]Rochelle is a professor
- [00:07:33.519]in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies.
- [00:07:36.410]And she began her career in the fall of 1996.
- [00:07:41.110]Since then, she has been responsible
- [00:07:43.181]for the preparation, instruction
- [00:07:45.480]and facilitation of 123 courses.
- [00:07:49.503]These courses reflect the diversity
- [00:07:51.436]in content, scope, format, level and size.
- [00:07:55.670]I think there's probably not a course
- [00:07:57.270]that Rochelle hasn't taught.
- [00:07:59.210]She is a remarkable teacher.
- [00:08:01.230]Not only is she transparent on her expectations
- [00:08:04.202]but she is approachable.
- [00:08:06.243]Despite working from home in the pandemic,
- [00:08:09.720]Dr. Dalla ensured her students understood her door,
- [00:08:12.787]even if it was virtual was always open.
- [00:08:16.098]The ongoing support given extends beyond
- [00:08:19.018]the minimum requirements.
- [00:08:20.900]She is continually looking for ways to engage
- [00:08:23.643]and connect with her students,
- [00:08:26.020]even during these challenging times.
- [00:08:28.946]One of the hardest things as a student
- [00:08:32.050]is maintaining interest and focus during course lectures.
- [00:08:36.320]For that reason,
- [00:08:37.650]this student has appreciated Dr. Dalla's presentation style
- [00:08:42.062]and the way she is able to deliver information
- [00:08:44.893]and content while remaining personable
- [00:08:47.610]and connected to students.
- [00:08:50.840]Her experience, research work
- [00:08:53.080]and community connections contribute
- [00:08:56.170]to the vast expertise and real life connections
- [00:08:59.163]that she brings to the content she teaches.
- [00:09:02.650]So I am pleased to congratulate Rochelle Dalla
- [00:09:05.224]who I believe is watching us virtually.
- [00:09:07.550]So thank you, Rochelle, for all your work
- [00:09:09.560]in the classroom and being a model teacher.
- [00:09:11.827]Let's give Rochelle a round of applause.
- [00:09:14.219](audience applauds)
- [00:09:20.310]Our next distinguished teaching award is Ajai Ammachathram.
- [00:09:26.560]Ajai, please come forward.
- [00:09:29.685]I'm gonna talk a little bit about you
- [00:09:31.520]while you come forward.
- [00:09:34.030]Ajai's teaching philosophy is to deliver targeted education
- [00:09:38.498]that directly addresses the needs
- [00:09:41.200]of future hospitality professionals
- [00:09:43.240]who will create a significant impact
- [00:09:45.951]in the hospitality industry,
- [00:09:48.330]specifically in food and beverage management.
- [00:09:52.195]As a hospitality professional
- [00:09:53.996]who values experiential learning.
- [00:09:56.480]It is Ajai's goal to give back to his students
- [00:09:59.540]and instill passion and commitment towards the career.
- [00:10:04.100]So here's some words about Ajai.
- [00:10:07.343]Ajai has consistently shown he is an innovative educator
- [00:10:11.030]and steadfast advocate of experiential learning.
- [00:10:14.060]His teaching and extension programs contribute positively
- [00:10:17.889]to the food service industry by bridging the gap
- [00:10:21.540]between practice and education
- [00:10:23.714]while protecting existing businesses and jobs
- [00:10:26.946]that may be at risk because of inconsistent quality
- [00:10:30.620]in food and service.
- [00:10:33.067]Ajai strives to have students actively involved
- [00:10:35.774]in their learning during class
- [00:10:38.330]and successfully creates an environment
- [00:10:40.580]that is conducive to students feeling comfortable
- [00:10:42.999]in contributing during class.
- [00:10:45.540]His personality and approach to learning contributes
- [00:10:48.010]to the creation of an environment
- [00:10:49.638]where students feel valued and appreciated,
- [00:10:53.014]and they know that he sincerely cares about their learning.
- [00:10:57.170]So Ajai, thank you for your role as a teacher.
- [00:11:01.450]Thank you.
- [00:11:03.264](audience applauds)
- [00:11:11.429]Sure.
- [00:11:12.262]Thank you, Dean Jones, just a few words.
- [00:11:16.809]Coming from the private industry,
- [00:11:19.879]you're not used to so much support
- [00:11:23.380]which we get in the hospitality industry.
- [00:11:26.060]It's basically sink or swim, but having been here
- [00:11:29.584]as a faculty member for the last five years
- [00:11:34.116]The support I get from Dr. Johnson from the administration.
- [00:11:39.160]You're just pampered here I would say,
- [00:11:41.910]I truly am humbled and honored to be receiving this award
- [00:11:45.956]and for all the support I'm getting.
- [00:11:47.870]So thank you very much.
- [00:11:49.840](audience applauds)
- [00:11:59.030]Next is Lydiah Kiramba.
- [00:12:04.170]Lydiah's teaching as an educational linguistics instructor,
- [00:12:08.940]draws on social cultural theories of learning,
- [00:12:12.300]lessons learned from her teaching
- [00:12:14.280]in multi-lingual settings and research
- [00:12:16.788]with bilingual and multilingual learners and communities.
- [00:12:21.025]She views teaching as an ongoing process
- [00:12:23.906]in which one gains insights from active engagement
- [00:12:27.650]with students knowledge.
- [00:12:30.680]Her teaching student evaluation ratings
- [00:12:33.140]are consistently strong with positive student comments
- [00:12:36.733]that note the relevance of readings,
- [00:12:39.869]variety of perspectives on topics and fresh perspectives
- [00:12:44.204]on pathways to success for diverse learners.
- [00:12:48.230]Dr. Kiramba provides examples of innovative assignments
- [00:12:51.897]that include putting learners in contact
- [00:12:54.265]with multi-lingual students directly,
- [00:12:56.896]introducing new knowledge
- [00:12:58.740]by first accessing students' prior knowledge
- [00:13:01.420]and experiences,
- [00:13:03.010]helping students connect theory to practice
- [00:13:06.083]and leveraging home literacies.
- [00:13:09.840]One of Dr. Kiramba's most impressive qualities
- [00:13:12.693]is her ability to alter course content
- [00:13:15.781]to best suit the academic disciplines
- [00:13:18.163]of all the students taking her courses.
- [00:13:21.712]When Dr. Kiramba learns that students earning
- [00:13:24.810]their teaching endorsements in math,
- [00:13:26.930]science, elementary education,
- [00:13:28.860]and a variety of other disciplines
- [00:13:31.070]had signed up for her course.
- [00:13:32.865]She was able to alter readings to incorporate pieces
- [00:13:36.610]of literature to match the diverse academic environment
- [00:13:40.340]she was given to teach.
- [00:13:41.892]Her knowledge, experience, and natural ability was apparent
- [00:13:46.106]through the effort she made to make sure
- [00:13:48.781]the information for the course was relevant
- [00:13:51.980]to the future careers of all of her students.
- [00:13:55.325]Thank you, Lydiah, for thinking of all students
- [00:13:57.739]and how you can meet their needs.
- [00:14:00.078]Congratulations.
- [00:14:01.730]Thank you.
- [00:14:03.383](audience applauds)
- [00:14:12.990]Good morning, it's a great honor to receive this award.
- [00:14:18.913]I wanna say thank you to Dean Jones.
- [00:14:23.510]Thank you to my nominator Dr. Catalano who is with us here
- [00:14:28.140]and College of Teaching, Learning...
- [00:14:31.630]TLTE, College of Education, my students, and everyone.
- [00:14:34.649]It's a community that has encouraged us,
- [00:14:37.610]that has mentored us to be great teachers and researchers.
- [00:14:41.000]I am grateful, thank you.
- [00:14:44.045](audience applauds)
- [00:14:55.610]Our next award is the Charman Outstanding Professor Award.
- [00:14:59.776]And this award is given to acknowledge quality instruction
- [00:15:04.180]and teaching in the college,
- [00:15:06.060]and is supported by a generous donor.
- [00:15:09.960]And our awardee this year is Yan Xia.
- [00:15:13.060]Yan, please come forward.
- [00:15:18.810]For Yan Xia to be able to connect to students
- [00:15:21.887]is as important as effective teaching in the classroom.
- [00:15:26.830]She intentionally pays attention to any students
- [00:15:30.340]who are new to the campus.
- [00:15:33.250]She paid special attention and reached out
- [00:15:35.880]to the first year students at UNL,
- [00:15:38.093]minority students and international students,
- [00:15:41.570]and help them develop a sense of belonging
- [00:15:44.007]to the shared learning community in her class.
- [00:15:47.634]Teachers should prepare students
- [00:15:49.634]for opportunities and challenges in the world.
- [00:15:53.096]She has made purposeful efforts to bring
- [00:15:55.557]both the world to students in her class
- [00:15:58.480]in Nebraska and take them to meet the world.
- [00:16:02.670]Dr. Xia's great strengths,
- [00:16:04.188]her ability to strengthen a student's cultural understanding
- [00:16:08.059]and her ability to engage in reflective practice
- [00:16:11.640]are very evident in her teaching.
- [00:16:14.890]Even during extremely busy and stressful times,
- [00:16:18.442]Dr. Xia puts our wellbeing on top.
- [00:16:22.270]She fosters a sense of community
- [00:16:24.710]and teamwork among her graduate assistants.
- [00:16:28.060]Dr. Xia meets her students where they are
- [00:16:30.940]and takes them to where she knows they can reach.
- [00:16:34.650]Congratulations, Yan.
- [00:16:36.290]Perfect example of the Sharman Outstanding Professor.
- [00:16:40.044]Thank you.
- [00:16:41.010](audience applauds)
- [00:16:48.480]I'm very happy.
- [00:16:52.000]If my mother heard me talking like this
- [00:16:53.457]she would say, "Yan, you should be modest and humble."
- [00:16:57.324](laughing)
- [00:16:59.500]Yeah, teaching
- [00:17:05.103]teaching means to me
- [00:17:08.660]we need to challenge our students beyond themselves
- [00:17:12.020]and we need to really care about their wellbeing
- [00:17:16.080]the whole wellbeing, not just professional
- [00:17:18.542]but also their mental, their physical,
- [00:17:22.190]everything as a human being.
- [00:17:25.170]And modeling dignity, respect and kindness
- [00:17:31.800]is as important as teaching effectively or subject areas.
- [00:17:38.360]So I really appreciate that.
- [00:17:41.840]I want to thank all my students over the years,
- [00:17:44.950]my colleagues who have been supporting me,
- [00:17:49.687]being who I am.
- [00:17:50.936]And I really appreciate this opportunity.
- [00:17:53.710]Thank you very much.
- [00:17:54.780]Thank you all.
- [00:17:56.030](audience applauds)
- [00:18:01.474]I think you can see lots of great teaching going on.
- [00:18:06.070]Now, we have a few awards that are called
- [00:18:08.440]the Outstanding Teaching Award
- [00:18:10.760]and these are given by the college.
- [00:18:12.690]So the Distinguished Teaching Awards
- [00:18:14.221]are awarded by the university.
- [00:18:16.390]These are awarded by the college
- [00:18:18.570]to recognize outstanding teaching.
- [00:18:24.660]And our first award is Carrie Hanson-Bradley.
- [00:18:29.184]Carrie Hanson-Bradley bases her teaching around
- [00:18:32.156]an attempt to help students develop rich,
- [00:18:35.300]overlapping relationships.
- [00:18:37.486]Relationships with course content,
- [00:18:40.370]relationships with personal and professional futures,
- [00:18:44.070]relationships with community.
- [00:18:46.650]With these relationships in mind,
- [00:18:48.950]she works to create a class culture
- [00:18:52.000]that disseminates course content
- [00:18:54.070]in relevant and impactful ways.
- [00:18:56.530]Assesses learning through multifaceted assessments,
- [00:18:59.858]encourages critical and creative thinking
- [00:19:02.641]and creates a class environment
- [00:19:04.850]that promotes interpersonal relationships.
- [00:19:09.030]Dr. Hanson-Bradley's professionalism
- [00:19:10.989]and passion for teaching carry through
- [00:19:13.570]as she communicates and plans for the students,
- [00:19:16.720]shares with faculty and participates in a scholarly manner.
- [00:19:21.449]Modeling standards for achievements and ethical behaviors
- [00:19:25.080]is built into the delivery, assessment,
- [00:19:27.241]and interaction she expects from herself and her students.
- [00:19:31.720]She shows she listens to the students
- [00:19:33.577]as she moves through the semester
- [00:19:35.749]and uses input to learn, grow, and revise her practices.
- [00:19:40.820]And I have seen Carrie at work as she leads
- [00:19:43.350]the Family and Community Services Faculty
- [00:19:46.030]for Great Plains IDEA
- [00:19:47.690]and I can attest to how she engages with faculty.
- [00:19:50.382]And I'm sure she does likewise with students.
- [00:19:52.969]So congratulations, Carrie.
- [00:19:54.737]She's in a virtual space with us today
- [00:19:56.954]so let's give Carrie a big round of applause.
- [00:19:59.466](audience applauds)
- [00:20:08.860]Our next awardee is Elaine Chan.
- [00:20:11.693]Is Elaine here with us today?
- [00:20:14.970]Perhaps not.
- [00:20:16.160]Okay, so let me tell you a little bit about Elaine
- [00:20:18.252]and I hope she's listening in our virtual environment.
- [00:20:21.838]As a first-generation university student,
- [00:20:25.290]raised by immigrant Chinese parents who began school
- [00:20:28.462]with limited English language skills.
- [00:20:31.295]Elaine Chan can offer a perspective
- [00:20:33.893]that her students may not have.
- [00:20:36.930]Similarly, her students bring with them a lifetime
- [00:20:39.945]of experiences in their own homes and communities
- [00:20:43.280]from which to draw and inform their teaching practice
- [00:20:46.419]and learning about issues of diversity.
- [00:20:50.290]Acknowledging the experience that teachers
- [00:20:52.423]and students bring to learning situations is critical
- [00:20:55.688]as a foundation for teachers at all stages of their career.
- [00:20:59.661]But especially as they begin their teaching careers
- [00:21:02.368]when they do not have a lot of classroom teaching experience
- [00:21:05.868]from which to draw.
- [00:21:08.720]Dr. Chan is emotionally connected with students,
- [00:21:11.643]both as a collective group and as individuals.
- [00:21:15.820]The mutual respect is obvious.
- [00:21:18.610]She listens carefully and attentively.
- [00:21:21.319]And the comments she makes are universally constructive
- [00:21:24.943]and kindly voiced.
- [00:21:27.610]It is abundantly clear that students
- [00:21:29.682]are important to Dr. Chan.
- [00:21:32.340]She enjoys building relationships
- [00:21:34.900]and establishing the kind of classroom environment
- [00:21:38.100]that students enjoy, want to participate in
- [00:21:41.400]and want to collaborate with other classmates.
- [00:21:44.730]This only happens when instruction is highly effective.
- [00:21:48.927]So thank you Elaine, and congratulations.
- [00:21:52.941](audience applauds)
- [00:22:01.832]And our final Outstanding Teaching Award is to Hideo Suzuki.
- [00:22:07.541]And Hideo is also joining us virtually,
- [00:22:10.542]I think from Oklahoma.
- [00:22:12.850]So Hideo we're glad to have you with us.
- [00:22:16.600]Here's some things about Hideo,
- [00:22:18.820]Dr. Suzuki's goal in each class
- [00:22:21.420]is to help students develop intellectual skills
- [00:22:24.070]and learning independence.
- [00:22:26.610]He finds it rewarding to see students
- [00:22:28.714]who think critically about the course materials
- [00:22:31.173]and extend their learning beyond the classroom
- [00:22:34.145]In order to achieve this goal,
- [00:22:36.730]he adopts strategies to help students learn actively
- [00:22:39.868]through social interaction
- [00:22:41.703]and to improve their self-efficacy in the areas he teaches.
- [00:22:46.609]Dr. Suzuki regarding active social interaction and learning
- [00:22:50.800]as self-efficacy and self-efficacy
- [00:22:53.545]as the most important elements in his teaching philosophy.
- [00:22:57.740]And here's some things his students
- [00:22:59.870]and colleagues said about him.
- [00:23:02.090]I think that there are three main strengths
- [00:23:04.870]that Hideo brings to his classes.
- [00:23:07.320]First, he is extraordinarily well-prepared
- [00:23:09.491]and presents cutting edge context to his students
- [00:23:12.461]in exceptionally well-designed set of course materials.
- [00:23:16.370]His supporting materials are very carefully prepared
- [00:23:19.630]and beautifully organized and designed.
- [00:23:22.774]Hideo is a dedicated teacher, mentor and researcher
- [00:23:27.106]who has supported students in their learning
- [00:23:29.830]and application of neuroscience.
- [00:23:32.191]This particular student feels very fortunate
- [00:23:35.100]to have crossed paths with Dr. Suzuki
- [00:23:37.199]and I will continue to recommend his courses
- [00:23:40.270]to future graduate students.
- [00:23:42.043]Dr. Suzuki is an asset to his students,
- [00:23:45.000]his Department, the University, and his field.
- [00:23:48.423]Congratulations Hideo,
- [00:23:50.450]we're proud to have you among our faculty.
- [00:23:53.907](audience applauds)
- [00:23:57.996]And Hideo sent a little statement of thanks
- [00:24:00.326]that he would like me to share with you.
- [00:24:04.220]It is very honorable to receive this award.
- [00:24:07.040]I primarily teach CEHS students, neuroscience and education,
- [00:24:11.960]and I have been working on how I can contribute
- [00:24:14.550]to student learning of such a challenging topic.
- [00:24:18.420]Receiving this award encourages my teaching style.
- [00:24:22.180]I sincerely appreciate my mentor and colleagues
- [00:24:24.734]who have advised and helped me improve my teaching approach
- [00:24:28.300]and my students who gave me valuable feedback
- [00:24:30.487]on my teaching performance.
- [00:24:32.950]Furthermore,
- [00:24:33.783]I thank the Department of Educational Psychology
- [00:24:36.260]and the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:24:38.710]for supporting and encouraging my work.
- [00:24:41.460]Without their support,
- [00:24:42.640]I would not be able to achieve this award.
- [00:24:44.910]Thank you very much.
- [00:24:46.620]Congratulations, Hideo.
- [00:24:49.169](audience applauds)
- [00:24:54.341]Now, in addition to teaching faculty also do mentoring
- [00:24:58.627]which is perhaps considered
- [00:25:00.240]a special kind of teaching I would say.
- [00:25:02.881]So the Faculty-Student Mentoring Award
- [00:25:06.370]is recognized as a faculty mentor in the college
- [00:25:09.708]who I would say exemplifies the full meaning of mentoring.
- [00:25:16.780]And I am pleased to present this year's award
- [00:25:19.510]to Theresa Catalano.
- [00:25:22.195]Come on up Theresa.
- [00:25:23.689](audience applauds)
- [00:25:26.810]Dr. Catalano had this to say
- [00:25:29.070]about her definition of mentoring.
- [00:25:32.037]"Since the outbreak of the virus
- [00:25:34.540]and the newest national racial reckoning.
- [00:25:37.085]I still define mentoring students
- [00:25:39.243]as acting variously as coach, counsel, tutor,
- [00:25:44.720]champion, confidante, and intellectual guide.
- [00:25:48.910]But I also have had to redefine the meaning
- [00:25:51.770]of mentor as someone who must provide emotional support
- [00:25:55.620]to students and be present however possible.
- [00:25:59.930]This means seeing students more frequently in virtual ways,
- [00:26:03.670]checking up on students more often
- [00:26:05.950]and making sure they have what they need
- [00:26:07.678]to be successful academically,
- [00:26:09.935]when they are also negotiating this health crisis
- [00:26:13.340]and racial crisis."
- [00:26:15.238]International students find Theresa,
- [00:26:17.920]including some who are not even based in the department
- [00:26:20.930]and they're nourished by her.
- [00:26:23.040]Her classes are known as rigorous
- [00:26:25.240]but also popular because students know Theresa
- [00:26:28.180]is approachable, patient, devoted to them and supportive.
- [00:26:33.580]Dr. Catalano brings the wisdom
- [00:26:35.288]of her numerous life experiences to her teaching
- [00:26:38.770]and her interactions with students.
- [00:26:41.360]As an educator, she shows great attention
- [00:26:44.120]to detail in her lessons, sensitivity to differences
- [00:26:48.013]and presents grappling challenges
- [00:26:50.380]to us as students and individuals.
- [00:26:53.310]Dr. Catalano recognizes uniqueness and diversities,
- [00:26:57.130]celebrating the varied backgrounds
- [00:26:59.250]of all who study with her.
- [00:27:02.571]Congratulations Theresa, I love reading your thoughts.
- [00:27:05.390](audience applauds)
- [00:27:16.830]Let me lower this a little.
- [00:27:19.270]Good morning.
- [00:27:20.103]It feels like afternoon already. (laughs)
- [00:27:22.719]Thank you so much Dean Jones for that,
- [00:27:26.360]really fantastic introduction.
- [00:27:28.730]I just wanna start by thanking CEHS
- [00:27:31.060]for even having an award like this
- [00:27:32.640]that recognizes the invisible work
- [00:27:34.720]that a lot of us do and taking care of our students
- [00:27:37.560]and giving a human touch
- [00:27:38.790]to our students college experiences.
- [00:27:41.280]Close and caring mentorship can often make a difference
- [00:27:43.880]in whether students stays and finishes
- [00:27:45.424]and in the quality of experiences they have.
- [00:27:48.340]And yet it's often overlooked
- [00:27:49.798]in evaluations and other measures.
- [00:27:51.820]So I really wanna thank CEHS for elevating its importance
- [00:27:54.926]by having this award.
- [00:27:56.450]And it is a true honor to receive it.
- [00:27:58.533]I'd like to thank Ali Moeller
- [00:28:00.280]and Ted Hamann for nominating me.
- [00:28:01.909]My chair Guy Trainin for his support,
- [00:28:04.420]all of my wonderful colleagues and my amazing students,
- [00:28:07.801]especially to them because they wrote
- [00:28:09.682]the most beautiful letters that make everything so worth it
- [00:28:12.732]and make me feel so appreciated.
- [00:28:15.130]So thank you all so much.
- [00:28:16.470]Thank you to my students.
- [00:28:18.408](audience applauds)
- [00:28:30.595]Okay, now we're gonna move
- [00:28:32.190]to a couple of awards for graduate students.
- [00:28:37.100]These awards are Graduate Student Research
- [00:28:39.628]and Creative Activity Award.
- [00:28:42.210]And of course, we're proud of our research
- [00:28:44.400]and our scholarship and creative activity of our faculty
- [00:28:48.410]but also of our graduate students.
- [00:28:51.290]Students across departments from a diversity of disciplines,
- [00:28:55.130]work closely with their faculty mentors
- [00:28:57.825]to identify and develop areas of innovative scholarship
- [00:29:01.640]and to put theory into meaningful practice.
- [00:29:05.400]So the college recognizes a student
- [00:29:07.381]who has embraced the spirit of scholarship
- [00:29:09.718]that advances the mission of a college
- [00:29:11.937]to strengthen individuals, families,
- [00:29:14.266]schools and communities.
- [00:29:16.536]And our awardee this year
- [00:29:18.610]for Graduate Student Research and Creative Activity
- [00:29:22.010]is Erin Hamel from the Department of Child,
- [00:29:24.650]Youth and Family Studies.
- [00:29:26.480]And let me tell you a little bit
- [00:29:27.790]about what Erin's nomination materials said about her,
- [00:29:32.002]throughout her doctoral career,
- [00:29:35.140]Erin has embraced the spirit of scholarship
- [00:29:37.205]through the active pursuit of research experiences
- [00:29:40.493]that support her longterm goals
- [00:29:42.244]of improving outcomes for young children.
- [00:29:45.590]Specifically her research focuses
- [00:29:47.319]on understanding, workplace supports for teachers
- [00:29:50.640]as well as equitable teaching practices
- [00:29:53.134]such that these can be enhanced to improve experiences
- [00:29:56.632]for teachers and children.
- [00:29:59.089]Her excellence as a scholar and commitment
- [00:30:01.625]to engaging in disseminating research is evident.
- [00:30:05.150]She has a record of publications and peer reviewed journals.
- [00:30:08.570]She has presented her research
- [00:30:10.410]for local national and international audiences,
- [00:30:13.907]and she has demonstrated the ability
- [00:30:16.323]to secure funding to pursue her research goals,
- [00:30:19.890]including receiving
- [00:30:21.050]the Buffet Early Childhood Institute Graduate Scholar,
- [00:30:24.600]Dissertation Funding Award.
- [00:30:26.610]And Erin is joining us virtually today.
- [00:30:28.529]And I wanna say congratulations to Erin.
- [00:30:31.043]You're on an excellent path to a successful career.
- [00:30:35.257]Congratulations.
- [00:30:36.803](audience applauds)
- [00:30:43.370]Another graduate student award
- [00:30:45.390]is for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.
- [00:30:49.400]So in addition to our graduate students coming to us
- [00:30:52.150]and getting excellent supports
- [00:30:53.930]and experience and research,
- [00:30:56.031]they also leave us with excellent experience in teaching.
- [00:31:00.400]And this year's
- [00:31:01.330]Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
- [00:31:04.203]is Cindy Linzell from the Department
- [00:31:06.890]of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.
- [00:31:09.178](audience applauds)
- [00:31:14.160]Cindy is that rare graduate teaching assistant
- [00:31:17.139]who can not only teach a variety of courses
- [00:31:20.602]but also does so independently and with innovation.
- [00:31:24.928]In her three and a half years
- [00:31:27.090]as a graduate teaching assistant,
- [00:31:29.120]Cindy has taught seven courses
- [00:31:32.060]and she's currently teaching an eighth course.
- [00:31:35.070]Cindy teaches her courses
- [00:31:36.760]with great expertise and enthusiasm.
- [00:31:40.950]And her preparations for teaching do not quite capture
- [00:31:44.580]the depth and variety of her teaching
- [00:31:46.970]as she has taught courses
- [00:31:48.614]to first year undergraduate students
- [00:31:51.520]and to a group of Omaha Public School Para Educators
- [00:31:55.196]who are moving through the departments,
- [00:31:57.021]Grow Your Own Para Educator Program.
- [00:31:59.861]So when teaching these para educators,
- [00:32:02.710]adults who are working
- [00:32:03.950]in the schools as teaching assistants
- [00:32:06.460]while gaining teacher certification themselves
- [00:32:09.181]Cindy drove weekly to Omaha to teach
- [00:32:12.350]the Paras where they worked and lived.
- [00:32:15.030]Meeting students where they are.
- [00:32:17.600]Cindy is well-deserving of this award.
- [00:32:19.445]She has been an outstanding graduate teaching assistant
- [00:32:22.570]within TLTE for years.
- [00:32:24.700]When she graduates and leaves us
- [00:32:26.313]we will be much the poorer for it.
- [00:32:28.912]I think they wanna keep you around Cindy. (laughs)
- [00:32:31.510]Congratulations, and thank you for your work with students.
- [00:32:35.319](audience applauds)
- [00:32:44.561]Thank you so much, Dean Jones.
- [00:32:47.314]It's no mystery that I love teaching
- [00:32:49.470]and to receive this award just is kind of the cherry
- [00:32:52.997]on top of the sundae.
- [00:32:54.804]I adore what I do.
- [00:32:56.602]I hope to continue being able to do this in the future.
- [00:33:00.800]And I am so privileged to have been able
- [00:33:04.195]to be part of CEHS these last four years.
- [00:33:07.150]Thank you.
- [00:33:08.523](audience applauds)
- [00:33:16.320]Okay, now, we'll move to some research awards for faculty.
- [00:33:22.250]First, we'll start with the Emerging Scholar Research

- [00:33:44.920]And Lorey is with us in our virtual space this morning.
- [00:33:47.720]But let me tell you a little bit
- [00:33:49.070]about what Lorey's nominees said about her, nominators.
- [00:33:53.180]As a family and human developmentalist
- [00:33:54.980]and an applied methodologist Lorey's research takes
- [00:33:58.970]a strengths-based approach to understanding health
- [00:34:01.660]and wellbeing among marginalized U.S. populations.
- [00:34:05.842]Her research program focuses on three central questions.
- [00:34:10.133]How do families promote or inhibit health and development?
- [00:34:14.840]How do larger social systems promote
- [00:34:17.490]or inhibit health and development?
- [00:34:19.740]And what methods best addressed the theoretical
- [00:34:22.580]and public health issues in understanding the promotion
- [00:34:25.691]or inhibition of health and development?
- [00:34:30.150]Lorey's efforts related to supporting
- [00:34:32.133]and conducting high quality research

- [00:34:53.549]Lorey is a college leader in grant activity
- [00:34:56.304]and she appropriately assumes
- [00:34:58.330]both leading and collaborating roles.
- [00:35:00.687]Her activity in this realm is very impressive
- [00:35:03.158]and she serves in a variety of roles that provide
- [00:35:05.665]a great deal of breadth and depth.
- [00:35:08.375]Lorey pursues, her grantsmanship with the purpose
- [00:35:11.570]of advancing knowledge and promoting science
- [00:35:14.280]to solve significant social and educational challenges.
- [00:35:18.680]So congratulations, Lorey.
- [00:35:20.830]I'm happy to have you with us
- [00:35:22.740]and eager to see where your work around health
- [00:35:26.250]and wellbeing goes.
- [00:35:27.490]Congratulations to Lorey.
- [00:35:29.547](audience applauds)
- [00:35:36.170]Next up is the Distinguished Research

- [00:35:41.219]And this award is given to acknowledge
- [00:35:43.930]a nationally or internationally recognized member
- [00:35:46.672]of our college who has a record of long-term achievement
- [00:35:51.120]or an outstanding piece of research or creative activity.
- [00:35:55.240]And this year's awardee is Kristin Duppong Hurley
- [00:35:59.473]from the Department of Special Education
- [00:36:01.522]and Communication Disorders.
- [00:36:04.310](audience applauds)
- [00:36:07.825]Let me tell you a little bit about Kristin.
- [00:36:10.640]Kristin is an acknowledged national and international leader
- [00:36:14.150]in child and family welfare research.
- [00:36:17.047]Her prolific and creative stream
- [00:36:18.954]of residential care research at Boys Town continues
- [00:36:22.627]to make a powerful contribution even after many years.
- [00:36:26.518]Her scholarship has been effective to in advocacy.
- [00:36:30.611]Her studies have encouraged respect for
- [00:36:33.152]and engagement with marginalized families,
- [00:36:35.650]especially those with children in care.

- [00:36:59.380]to enhancing the wellbeing of children,

- [00:37:08.856]Her career manifests a lifelong passion for redressing
- [00:37:12.319]the multiple inequalities,
- [00:37:14.220]confronting disenfranchised communities,
- [00:37:16.590]families and children.
- [00:37:19.170]Kristin is humble, cares deeply,
- [00:37:22.130]thinks creatively works tirelessly
- [00:37:25.011]and is helping to create a world

- [00:37:29.320]and their families have access to knowledge,
- [00:37:31.984]to practices and to services
- [00:37:34.462]that would not exist without her.
- [00:37:37.096]Congratulations, Kristin for a career
- [00:37:39.455]of wonderful work to impact children.
- [00:37:42.826](audience applauds)
- [00:37:50.392]Thank you so much, Sherri and CEHS for this great award.
- [00:37:55.237]All research.
- [00:37:56.680]It's not an individual, it's a team.
- [00:37:58.307]There's so many people that have been involved
- [00:38:00.140]in my work over the past 20 years
- [00:38:01.863]but especially Alex, Matt, Jacqueline, Laurie
- [00:38:05.378]and Jonathan who have helped so much
- [00:38:07.996]with the work in the past 15 years.
- [00:38:11.400]I also really appreciate all the folks
- [00:38:14.520]at the nonprofit agencies, especially Boys Town,
- [00:38:17.390]all the different schools that we've worked with
- [00:38:19.614]and all the families, the students, the teachers
- [00:38:23.260]and the mental health providers that have worked
- [00:38:26.018]and collaborated to make this research possible.
- [00:38:28.571]And I'm just looking forward
- [00:38:30.010]towards the next 15, 20 years as well.
- [00:38:32.076]Thank you so much.
- [00:38:33.844](audience applauds)
- [00:38:43.974]I think it's important.
- [00:38:45.380]And it's one of the aims in the campus plan,
- [00:38:47.251]around increasing the impact of our research.
- [00:38:50.380]And it's one thing to have a lot of papers
- [00:38:52.200]and have a lot of grant money.
- [00:38:53.830]And of course that's all important,
- [00:38:55.950]but when communities are making use of our work
- [00:38:58.540]and are implementing strategies
- [00:39:01.006]and policies that can help individuals, families, schools
- [00:39:04.340]and communities, that's all the better,
- [00:39:06.720]what we're after.
- [00:39:09.100]Okay, now many of you probably remember
- [00:39:12.290]that we just recently had a reception
- [00:39:14.610]for our Swanson Teaching Award.
- [00:39:17.110]And I believe it or not,
- [00:39:18.570]that was our last year Swanson Teaching Award.
- [00:39:20.830]It took us a while to be able to have
- [00:39:23.190]an in-person reception.
- [00:39:24.440]And I was very pleased that we were able to do that.
- [00:39:26.760]But the time marches on
- [00:39:28.920]and we have a Swanson awardee for this year.
- [00:39:32.020]So we will have a reception this fall for this awardee
- [00:39:35.390]but I wanna bring her forward.
- [00:39:36.897]She'll receive her award.
- [00:39:38.450]And I wanna tell you a little bit about her.
- [00:39:41.040]So our recipient for the Donald R and Mary Lee Swanson Award
- [00:39:45.160]for Teaching Excellence is Dr. Soo-Young Hong.
- [00:39:49.036](audience applauds)
- [00:39:55.840]Dr. Hong believes that each class session
- [00:39:58.720]should always be carefully planned
- [00:40:00.750]and organized to maximize students' learning.
- [00:40:04.059]She thinks of a completed puzzle
- [00:40:07.440]when she plans each session of her teaching.
- [00:40:10.145]That includes multiple pieces with various shapes
- [00:40:13.890]and sizes that fit together nicely
- [00:40:16.583]while leaving sufficient room for further possibilities.
- [00:40:20.950]I love the analogy of the puzzle.
- [00:40:23.470]When completed each puzzle conveys a larger picture
- [00:40:26.955]with a complete set of meanings.
- [00:40:29.923]And here's what some of her nominators said
- [00:40:32.250]about Dr. Hong.
- [00:40:33.940]Dr. Hong showed genuine interest in students' development
- [00:40:36.810]as a professional and as a person.
- [00:40:39.610]She has passions for her students
- [00:40:41.798]and for the theory subject.
- [00:40:46.940]She demonstrates exemplary skills of teaching,
- [00:40:49.940]including guiding, challenging, and engaging students.
- [00:40:53.920]She makes the learning of theory exciting,
- [00:40:57.100]relevant, applicable, and fun.
- [00:41:00.600]One of the most unique attributes
- [00:41:02.562]of Dr Hong's teaching skill is her ability
- [00:41:05.324]to balance instruction, interaction,
- [00:41:08.085]and student contribution.
- [00:41:10.890]She engages students in dynamic discussions,
- [00:41:13.958]facilitating the depth and breadth of student contributions
- [00:41:18.230]in ways that vastly enlightened the course content.
- [00:41:21.884]One of the most striking elements
- [00:41:23.848]of these discussions is the way
- [00:41:25.930]in which she makes every student's contribution,
- [00:41:28.926]whether question, idea, or opinion. Feel valued and important,
- [00:41:35.540]even when some course correction was necessary.
- [00:41:39.180]So congratulations Soo-Young, I'm looking forward
- [00:41:41.465]to celebrating your teaching accomplishments this fall,
- [00:41:44.914]but thrilled to have you among
- [00:41:47.200]our Swanson teaching awardees.
- [00:41:49.786](audience applauds)
- [00:41:56.939]Thank you, Dean Jones.
- [00:41:59.570]Okay, so I was losing my voice this morning
- [00:42:02.310]so we'll see how that goes.
- [00:42:05.200]I love to share some stories
- [00:42:06.737]about myself with students and others that I work with.
- [00:42:10.557]So I'm gonna share a story here too.
- [00:42:15.110]So when I was in preschool
- [00:42:17.895]and I really wanted to become a preschool teacher
- [00:42:21.560]and when I was in elementary school
- [00:42:23.198]I wanted to become an elementary school teacher
- [00:42:25.720]and that went on until I went to college
- [00:42:27.900]and then I wanted to become a college professor.
- [00:42:31.118]So when I look back, I think I had all these different kinds
- [00:42:35.332]of experiences in the classroom settings
- [00:42:38.294]and with families of those children and students
- [00:42:41.224]that I interacted with from infants, toddlers
- [00:42:45.181]and preschoolers and middle schoolers and high schoolers
- [00:42:48.390]and college students and graduate students.
- [00:42:50.450]I really appreciate all the great teachers
- [00:42:54.790]that I've had as a child and as a college students
- [00:42:58.670]because they motivated me to aspire
- [00:43:02.440]to become a teacher.
- [00:43:05.420]I think teaching is a kind of a journey
- [00:43:08.920]that I need to continue to work on.
- [00:43:11.160]And I don't think I can have the expertise
- [00:43:17.300]in teaching unless I keep trying
- [00:43:19.300]and thinking and reflecting on my teaching.
- [00:43:23.760]And in our Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies,
- [00:43:26.680]we have so many great teachers.
- [00:43:29.210]So I have a lot of models and mentors who provided support
- [00:43:33.139]and encouragement and the feedback and so on.
- [00:43:37.710]And one last thing is this UNL and CEHS
- [00:43:41.560]is the one and only higher ed institution
- [00:43:45.050]that I've worked for.
- [00:43:47.340]One thing that I really appreciate for the college
- [00:43:51.700]is that we value teaching as much as research
- [00:43:55.710]and we value service as much as research,
- [00:43:58.364]as a research one institution.
- [00:44:00.362]And I really appreciate it.
- [00:44:01.747]And I think that's the right direction to go,
- [00:44:04.250]to build our workforce, and professionals
- [00:44:07.419]and our researchers and teachers for the future generations.
- [00:44:12.440]So thank you so much.
- [00:44:14.659]This is unbelievable, thank you so much.
- [00:44:18.242](audience applauds)
- [00:44:25.232]Okay, we have one more teaching award
- [00:44:28.230]and this one's given by the University of Nebraska System
- [00:44:31.632]but I wanted to recognize this individual too,
- [00:44:34.376]among our college and university teaching awards.
- [00:44:42.710]There we go.
- [00:44:44.630]So Dr. Ken Kiewra received the Outstanding Teaching
- [00:44:47.489]and Instructional Creativity Award
- [00:44:49.786]from the University of Nebraska System.
- [00:44:52.426]And this award is the system's most prestigious,
- [00:44:55.349]faculty honor for teaching and recognizes faculty
- [00:44:58.775]who have demonstrated meritorious and sustained records
- [00:45:02.291]of excellence and creativity in teaching.
- [00:45:05.664]So let me tell you a little bit
- [00:45:06.944]about Ken's record of teaching.
- [00:45:09.350]And Ken is joining us virtually, I think.
- [00:45:11.390]So, Congratulations, Ken,
- [00:45:13.030]I'm gonna talk about you a little bit.
- [00:45:15.550]Dr. Kiewra has developed what some would call
- [00:45:18.480]a meta position toward teaching and instruction.
- [00:45:21.960]His area of scholarship is the science
- [00:45:24.760]of teaching and learning.
- [00:45:26.730]He teaches students how to learn
- [00:45:28.668]and he teaches teachers how to teach.
- [00:45:31.660]He has operationalized this meta-teaching role in many ways.
- [00:45:36.390]He has created undergraduate courses
- [00:45:38.899]on how to learn and how to be a successful student.
- [00:45:42.850]He has written books on learning for students.
- [00:45:45.621]Some of these books are called Learning to Learn,
- [00:45:49.130]Learn How to Study and Soar to Success.
- [00:45:53.986]And for teachers,
- [00:45:55.570]he's written a book for teachers on how to learn.
- [00:45:58.230]And he's written a book for parents,
- [00:46:00.211]'Nurturing children's Talents: A Guide for Parents.'
- [00:46:05.040]He has developed a theoretical framework
- [00:46:07.750]for learning in the classroom known as the SOAR Model
- [00:46:11.190]which has been widely accepted in schools and universities.
- [00:46:15.370]He has studied successful learners,
- [00:46:17.620]focusing on how their talents are nurtured.
- [00:46:20.850]And he even has created a documentary Prodigies
- [00:46:23.839]of the Prairie, examining talented Nebraska youth
- [00:46:27.341]to shed light on the process of nurturing talent.
- [00:46:31.150]So Ken will receive his award and be recognized
- [00:46:34.020]at a system-level event later this spring.
- [00:46:36.669]But congratulations Ken,
- [00:46:38.332]we're very proud of your career long work
- [00:46:41.320]in teaching and learning.
- [00:46:42.630]So a big round of applause for Ken.
- [00:46:44.456](audience applauds)
- [00:46:50.300]And finally I'm gonna recognize a number of national awards.
- [00:46:55.800]And I recognize that we hopefully
- [00:46:57.574]have gotten everybody who's received
- [00:46:59.910]a national award between last spring and this spring,
- [00:47:02.692]but I apologize if we have left anybody out,
- [00:47:07.410]we have to implement some systems.
- [00:47:09.040]So we're sure we capture all of these,
- [00:47:11.510]but we have a number of faculty
- [00:47:12.812]who have received national awards
- [00:47:14.783]and they're all with us virtually today
- [00:47:16.710]but I wanna recognize them for the award they received
- [00:47:19.750]and what that award is about.
- [00:47:23.545]So Crystal Garcia from Educational Administration received
- [00:47:27.570]the American College Personnel Association,

- [00:47:32.055]This is award that she received after a two year term
- [00:47:35.400]as an emerging scholar designee and successfully fulfilled
- [00:47:39.470]her scholarly leadership commitments.
- [00:47:43.045]And we'll hold our applause till the end of all these.
- [00:47:46.784]Marc Goodrich received

- [00:48:04.720]It is intended to recognize a gifted young investigator
- [00:48:08.135]who studies reading and shows outstanding promise
- [00:48:11.630]and dedication to the field.
- [00:48:16.440]Sue Swearer was awarded the Mid-Career Award
- [00:48:19.440]for Outstanding Contributions
- [00:48:20.924]to Benefit Children, Youth, and Families
