- [00:00:00.189](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.470]Welcome back, one at all.
- [00:00:03.491]NCAA Tournament time.
- [00:00:05.370]Oh, is that time of the season for volleyball.
- [00:00:07.590]Normally December, this year, it is April.
- [00:00:09.970]And a pleasure to have with us,
- [00:00:10.930]the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln,
- [00:00:13.310]Chancellor Ronnie Green with us,
- [00:00:14.800]huge volleyball fan, he and his wife, Jane.
- [00:00:17.510]Now Chancellor, I know after a 20 day break
- [00:00:20.530]between the Michigan match
- [00:00:21.780]and now here we are finally in the NCAA Tournament.
- [00:00:24.530]It's gotta be a thrill for all of Husker fans
- [00:00:26.960]that finally we get to play volleyball again.
- [00:00:29.880]Well, absolutely, JB.
- [00:00:31.120]You know, it is unusual to have this long break
- [00:00:34.990]between the end of that for us even longer because
- [00:00:38.170]of the cancellation on the Penn State matches.
- [00:00:40.870]The end of the conference season between, you know, the end
- [00:00:44.090]of the season and the tournaments
- [00:00:46.720]is rarely see that happen.
- [00:00:49.580]It's just another example of
- [00:00:52.080]the amount of flexibility that has had to be shown
- [00:00:54.450]by all of our coaches and our student athletes
- [00:00:56.870]in this challenging year.
- [00:00:58.010]Not only were playing in a different time of year,
- [00:01:00.847]it's a curve ball, you know that comes
- [00:01:03.710]with every turn it seems like.
- [00:01:05.290]But it's just been great to have the chance
- [00:01:07.450]to compete and to pursue the ultimate goal of the season,
- [00:01:11.570]one batch at a time.
- [00:01:13.260]I certainly excited for the NCAA Tournament
- [00:01:16.450]to be here in Omaha in our backyard this year
- [00:01:21.141]and excited for it to begin today.
- [00:01:23.600]Chancellor Green, the University's research
- [00:01:25.930]profile continues to grow each and every year.
- [00:01:28.910]Well, this year older folks and frankly Nebraskans statewide
- [00:01:33.760]are increasingly focused on their health.
- [00:01:35.500]And thanks to Nebraska's research
- [00:01:37.300]there's some good news
- [00:01:38.210]that can benefit older patients
- [00:01:40.340]who might be facing surgery in the future.
- [00:01:42.130]What can you share with us?
- [00:01:44.850]Well, JB, we have a Husker team.
- [00:01:47.450]They've been part of a team,
- [00:01:48.960]but published research recently
- [00:01:51.290]on what's called Postoperative Delirium.
- [00:01:54.480]That's a condition that's triggered, of course,
- [00:01:56.700]by surgery where people were required to be,
- [00:01:58.730]you have to go under general anesthetic.
- [00:02:02.640]And it creates or has symptoms or either
- [00:02:05.510]might be disturbed, mental faculties, loss of orientation,
- [00:02:08.800]anxiety of of patients as they come out
- [00:02:11.840]from under anesthesia and can be prolonged in some cases.
- [00:02:16.150]Up to half of older patients undergoing surgery are faced
- [00:02:19.850]with Postoperative Operative Delirium, costs
- [00:02:22.960]the healthcare system in the United States
- [00:02:24.283]an estimated $164 billion a year due to extended
- [00:02:28.930]hospital stays and admission maybe
- [00:02:31.610]in cases where that continues
- [00:02:34.380]into long-term care facilities.
- [00:02:36.780]So several of our Huskers, Bridget Trip,
- [00:02:39.880]who is this recent paper's lead author,
- [00:02:42.570]and as a Huster Doctoral Candidate
- [00:02:45.330]in Complex Bio Systems
- [00:02:47.400]along with her major Advisor Hassan Atoo
- [00:02:50.600]who is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
- [00:02:54.010]in our College of Engineering,
- [00:02:55.910]in collaboration with research work,
- [00:02:58.250]that they've done that with scientists
- [00:03:00.640]at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
- [00:03:04.497]Published this paper that identified 90
- [00:03:07.600]different metabolites that were altered in blood samples
- [00:03:11.390]for people who experienced Postoperative Delirium
- [00:03:15.040]when compared to samples of people who did not.
- [00:03:19.240]This difference that they identified particularly
- [00:03:22.660]in the samples taken before surgery indicates
- [00:03:25.420]that the condition may have reliable biomarkers
- [00:03:28.840]that can be used to predict this and know how
- [00:03:31.980]to treat the condition better coming out of surgery.
- [00:03:37.950]So exciting work.
- [00:03:39.570]This has great potential to move, to addressing this issue
- [00:03:44.630]and being able to address it in a much better way.
- [00:03:50.461]It's just to put it in context also with one study
- [00:03:54.680]that recently said that Delirium is the
- [00:03:57.120]sixth most common presenting symptom in older adults
- [00:04:00.710]that have experienced coronavirus in the COVID epidemic
- [00:04:04.850]that we have been in.
- [00:04:06.350]So exciting work being published
- [00:04:09.490]by Bridget and Hassan and their coworkers in Boston.
- [00:04:13.490]And looking forward to continued work in this area.
- [00:04:16.660]A sample of the great research being done
- [00:04:19.060]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:21.400]That's the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:23.470]Lincoln our flagship University
- [00:04:24.950]across the great State of Nebraska.
- [00:04:26.830]It is tournament time.
- [00:04:28.300]That was Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:29.330]And now we'll have the Head Coach
- [00:04:30.360]at Nebraska Volleyball, John Cook, and we continue.
- [00:04:32.920]And you're listening to Big Red Volleyball.
