- [00:00:00.695]Ok, good morning everyone.
- [00:00:04.313]It's morning I guess right now.
- [00:00:07.665]But today is April 9th and we have a
- [00:00:12.690]senior student who was, who is majoring
- [00:00:16.876]in Nutrition and Health Sciences and the
- [00:00:20.456]major option is the Nutrition, Exercise,
- [00:00:23.735]and Health Sciences. Her name is Clare
- [00:00:27.356]Morehouse and thank you for coming today.
- [00:00:30.586]And she is graduating this May so I'd like
- [00:00:35.030]to interview with her and get some inputs
- [00:00:38.705]for incoming freshmen. So Clare, would you
- [00:00:42.731]like to introduce yourself for us?
- [00:00:44.732]Yes, absolutely so thank you so much, I'm
- [00:00:47.744]so excited to be here. As Dr. Takahashi
- [00:00:50.478]said my name is Clare. I'm a senior
- [00:00:52.855]studying Nutrition and Exercise Health
- [00:00:55.166]Science and I'm from Lincoln, NE and I'm
- [00:00:57.106]planning to attend physical therapy
- [00:00:58.875]school next year at the University of Iowa
- [00:01:00.971]Great! Congratulations, you know you are
- [00:01:03.436]starting a PT program in July you
- [00:01:06.232]said and that's that's great and when you
- [00:01:09.839]took my class, that was last year or so.
- [00:01:13.370]Or 2, 3 1/2 maybe? Right?
- [00:01:16.599]Last Spring, I think it was last spring.
- [00:01:18.836]Last Spring last spring ok, uh so yah we
- [00:01:20.962]went back to the COVID situation but yah,
- [00:01:23.392]that's right. But you know you you wanted
- [00:01:27.299]to go to a PT school and you know
- [00:01:29.792]that was great and you got into Iowa,
- [00:01:33.123]University of Iowa PT program so that's
- [00:01:36.679]that's a great success for you. Now
- [00:01:38.904]looking back your major, in major options
- [00:01:43.336]we had your major option was the
- [00:01:45.709]concentration you might call it is in
- [00:01:48.521]Nutrition Exercise and Health Sciences.
- [00:01:51.614]Looking back now, what are the some of
- [00:01:54.400]the benefits or positive things that you
- [00:01:57.738]experienced during that uh you know your
- [00:02:00.112]college career? Yah absolutely um, I think
- [00:02:02.286]this major option, this Nutrition Exercise
- [00:02:05.364]Health Science has been really helpful,
- [00:02:08.702]specifically for going to physical
- [00:02:10.682]therapy school but I really think for
- [00:02:12.707]any healthcare field it really lays a
- [00:02:14.744]great foundation in your Science courses,
- [00:02:17.208]and your like Anatomy, Physiology courses
- [00:02:19.873]I think it's, it was really enjoyable
- [00:02:23.253]learning learning about the human body,
- [00:02:25.724]how it functions and how it responds to
- [00:02:27.626]movement. I think those, there are a lot
- [00:02:29.559]of courses that touch on that and I think
- [00:02:31.779]that was very fascinating to learn about
- [00:02:34.078]as well as very practical and helpful for
- [00:02:36.468]a number of fields. I think having
- [00:02:38.888]Nutrition courses is really helpful for
- [00:02:41.174]I think any profession that you're going
- [00:02:44.104]to be working with people and their some,
- [00:02:46.534]some element of their well-being, I
- [00:02:48.544]think Nutrition plays such a big role so
- [00:02:50.784]just kind of having this fundamental
- [00:02:52.854]foundation level knowledge on that is is
- [00:02:55.248]really great again for a number of career
- [00:02:58.248]fields that people may be interested in.
- [00:03:00.527]And I think another really great thing
- [00:03:02.867]about this major is just the, the
- [00:03:04.487]discipline that it requires and that you
- [00:03:06.417]develop through the courses, I think
- [00:03:08.440]that's a skill that you just kind of have
- [00:03:10.720]to learn by practice and this major with
- [00:03:12.920]the variety of you know challenging
- [00:03:14.910]Science courses and the ACE courses that
- [00:03:17.691]are a part of every major I think really
- [00:03:20.639]really set you up well to develop that
- [00:03:22.940]skill and also I've been I've been
- [00:03:25.156]thinking about this as I prepare to
- [00:03:27.006]graduate and I think one of the things
- [00:03:29.056]that I'm most grateful for within this
- [00:03:30.876]major has been courses that allow you
- [00:03:33.326]to think critically and to approach
- [00:03:35.458]situations from a variety of perspectives
- [00:03:37.844]right, it's no longer this just like
- [00:03:39.754]memorizing information to do well on a
- [00:03:41.814]test, you really have how to learn to
- [00:03:43.606]apply that information and I think that's
- [00:03:45.871]that's something that I I continue to
- [00:03:47.891]learn in this last semester I know we'll
- [00:03:49.971]continue to learn throughout the rest of
- [00:03:52.141]my education and career as well and this
- [00:03:54.489]this program really has taught me how to
- [00:03:57.347]approach education and situations in that
- [00:04:00.447]light so, I think yah, it's a great major
- [00:04:02.609]and has, is really, just, yah, taught me
- [00:04:06.109]a lot. Yah, that's great! Yah, great
- [00:04:08.203]great great. So, that that's great
- [00:04:12.671]information for incoming freshmen to have.
- [00:04:16.018]When you look back now tho, some of the
- [00:04:19.288]challenges on the other hand maybe some of
- [00:04:22.129]the difficulties you experienced, can you
- [00:04:25.525]share with us your experience?
- [00:04:27.436]Yah, absolutely, I think the biggest
- [00:04:30.592]challenge is time management. I think
- [00:04:33.212]there's a lot of, a lot of things to
- [00:04:35.952]balance in college and you know certainly
- [00:04:38.822]this this major as well and not you know
- [00:04:41.250]from your coursework to extra-curriculars
- [00:04:44.212]to work or faith or rest like there's just
- [00:04:48.132]a lot of things that you kinda have to to
- [00:04:50.824]figure out how to incorporate into your
- [00:04:52.888]schedule and I know that was something
- [00:04:55.318]that I really struggled with early on and
- [00:04:57.278]learned how to do that and it's something
- [00:04:59.274]that I continue to learn and will
- [00:05:01.048]continue to learn but I think like I said
- [00:05:02.988]I kind of talked about previously this
- [00:05:04.811]this discipline that you develop and you
- [00:05:06.681]learn how to get into a routine. A really
- [00:05:08.561]practical step for me has been using my
- [00:05:10.663]planner just writing down what I need to
- [00:05:12.863]do and kind of giving myself timeframes
- [00:05:15.276]for when I'm going to do it and also
- [00:05:17.235]knowing when it's time to, you know, say
- [00:05:19.550]no or take a step back, and just recharge
- [00:05:21.949]also and those are are skills that I've
- [00:05:24.000]I've had to learn and has been hard but I
- [00:05:25.563]think has been great to have the
- [00:05:27.311]opportunity to learn that and again, just
- [00:05:31.080]kind of with these challenges and
- [00:05:33.148]balancing many things just being really
- [00:05:35.713]thankful to be in school and to have these
- [00:05:38.419]opportunities and remind, reminding myself
- [00:05:41.129]that that's like that's a gift and so it
- [00:05:44.501]can be overwhelming but it's also really
- [00:05:46.501]exciting to be in this position so yes,
- [00:05:48.518]those have been kind of some challenges
- [00:05:50.128]but also a good thing.
- [00:05:51.453]Great, great. Well thank you. So finally,
- [00:05:54.695]I'd like to ask you for those coming to
- [00:05:58.845]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and
- [00:06:00.801]especially majoring in Nutrition and
- [00:06:03.019]Health Sciences, what are some advice
- [00:06:06.468]you might have for them? And if you can
- [00:06:09.438]share some of that advice that'd be nice.
- [00:06:12.847]Yah, absolutely, so I'm going to share I
- [00:06:16.096]think the best advice that I received
- [00:06:18.348]then the advice that I would give with
- [00:06:20.268]that and so it's two parts in it's to hit
- [00:06:21.952]the ground running but to be patient with
- [00:06:24.167]yourself. So the first couple weeks that
- [00:06:26.167]you start you come into college it's
- [00:06:27.927]really exciting there's a lot that's
- [00:06:29.602]going on there's a lot of great events to
- [00:06:30.943]kind of get to incorporate yourself or I
- [00:06:33.376]don't know just to really get involved on
- [00:06:35.686]campus you get to meet people and I
- [00:06:38.113]encourage you to go those events and to
- [00:06:40.136]meet those people and to, to embrace those
- [00:06:42.130]opportunities but with that schedule a
- [00:06:44.343]time to do your coursework. That first
- [00:06:46.812]week you'll get your syllabus they call
- [00:06:49.172]them and it has this outline for your
- [00:06:51.115]semester and those exams and assignments
- [00:06:52.952]are going to seem like they're kind of far
- [00:06:54.403]off when in reality they are quickly
- [00:06:56.413]approaching so just kind of really take
- [00:06:58.602]that time your first week to, to start
- [00:07:00.702]your study habits and really again, go to
- [00:07:03.522]those events, meet people but also be in,
- [00:07:06.019]be invested in your coursework as well
- [00:07:08.149]and then kind of that second part that I
- [00:07:10.179]talked about, is to be patient with
- [00:07:11.659]yourself, coming to college is a big
- [00:07:13.399]transition, there's going to be a lot of
- [00:07:14.946]new things happening and it's ok not to
- [00:07:16.766]have everything figured out right away, I
- [00:07:18.416]don't know that I've I've ever met a
- [00:07:20.266]student that, that just knew how to do
- [00:07:22.156]college you know, right off the bat. So
- [00:07:24.416]that's all right but just be sure to seek
- [00:07:26.346]out there's a lot of resources on campus.
- [00:07:28.806]Office hours are huge there's math
- [00:07:31.496]resource center, chemistry resource
- [00:07:33.436]center, you know there's all these
- [00:07:35.106]different places that you can go. A lot
- [00:07:36.927]of different resources for well-being and
- [00:07:38.807]and a variety of elements so it's ok to to
- [00:07:41.627]you know fall or fail if you will but if
- [00:07:43.668]you're not happy with the outcome, don't
- [00:07:45.588]be afraid to change what you're doing or
- [00:07:47.388]to seek out help for that so yes so to
- [00:07:50.308]kind of sum that up again, hit the ground
- [00:07:52.508]running but be patient with yourself as
- [00:07:54.178]you transition to UNL.
- [00:07:55.938]Yep, that's great. Great advice. Well
- [00:07:58.844]thank you Clare today for coming and
- [00:08:01.735]sharing your experience and you know some
- [00:08:04.705]of the things you experienced positively
- [00:08:08.705]or negatively or negatively I guess or
- [00:08:10.887]challenging things you experienced, that
- [00:08:13.457]was great and I wish you luck, best of
- [00:08:17.785]luck and for your PT program at Iowa,
- [00:08:22.094]University of Iowa that will be great and
- [00:08:25.767]we are really proud of you and thank you
- [00:08:28.462]for coming today.
- [00:08:30.072]Yes, thank you so much and thank you I'm
- [00:08:31.995]excited for the new students that will be
- [00:08:34.004]at UNL it's really been a wonderful
- [00:08:35.746]experience and I can't wait for for you to
- [00:08:37.331]have that experience as well.
- [00:08:39.050]Great. Thank you so much Clare.
- [00:08:40.795]Thank you.
