- [00:00:00.090]So that you can pull it up if you want to at a later time.
- [00:00:06.210]So it is gonna be recorded.
- [00:00:08.540]Like Buck was saying, this gallery view works pretty well.
- [00:00:12.420]So if you go to the upper right hand corner where
- [00:00:14.750]it says view and get on the gallery view, that'll work well.
- [00:00:19.440]Also during the presentations, it's probably better
- [00:00:22.750]if you're mute and have your video off,
- [00:00:25.370]it kinda conserves a little bit of wifi,
- [00:00:28.990]a little bit of your broadband.
- [00:00:30.500]so might make it a little smoother for you.
- [00:00:33.620]Also, another little trick we talked about last week
- [00:00:37.420]was turning off the wifi on your phone.
- [00:00:39.970]'Cause it can kind of suck some of your,
- [00:00:42.420]some of your wifi off of your computer.
- [00:00:44.690]So that might make things better.
- [00:00:46.760]Just trying to help out those people
- [00:00:48.260]that have the farm type internet, and I'm one of them.
- [00:00:52.650]So if I start cutting out, let me know.
- [00:00:56.050]And then we're gonna send out the slides.
- [00:00:59.770]We'll send out the slides to everybody
- [00:01:01.550]after this presentation.
- [00:01:03.680]Also we got a couple other resources that are gonna,
- [00:01:06.320]they'll come your way after we're done here.
- [00:01:09.700]One of them is how to pick a trainer.
- [00:01:11.910]It's some information that Buck is gonna provide us.
- [00:01:15.350]Also an agenda for the train the trainer program
- [00:01:21.520]that Buck is gonna do later on.
- [00:01:25.100]So maybe get some interest in that.
- [00:01:30.870]So those three things will come out
- [00:01:33.303]after today's presentation.
- [00:01:35.020]And we'd like you to come up with questions
- [00:01:37.770]and write them down and maybe save questions till the end.
- [00:01:41.510]We'll just open it up for questions.
- [00:01:44.500]I'm sure we'll have some time.
- [00:01:45.790]So really excited today to talk about
- [00:01:49.640]the future of our heavy equipment training.
- [00:01:52.290]We've teamed up with Vista Training,
- [00:01:55.290]and they're a nationwide heavy equipment trainer.
- [00:01:59.570]We're glad to have Rick Longstaff here,
- [00:02:02.350]and also Buck Hillestad he is gonna talk about
- [00:02:06.500]the train the trainer aspect.
- [00:02:07.950]So we'll let Rick take it away,
- [00:02:12.930]and tell us about Vista Training.
- [00:02:16.300]Okay, I've prepared just a few slides to kinda guide us
- [00:02:20.570]through this as visuals.
- [00:02:22.030]And we have a short demonstration right after that.
- [00:02:26.560]And my whole segment should take anywhere between 10 and 12,
- [00:02:30.110]I'm sorry 20 and 25 minutes or so,
- [00:02:32.330]and then Buck we'll take over from there.
- [00:02:34.710]So let me just bring up the slides.
- [00:02:38.540]Again hold questions to the end, if you don't mind.
- [00:02:43.220]And if for some reason any of us get disconnected,
- [00:02:45.990]just hold on, we'll connect back up.
- [00:02:50.330]Okay, somebody let me know when you see
- [00:02:53.420]the screen being shared.
- [00:02:56.180]Its up.
- [00:02:58.670]Okay and in full screen mode now?
- [00:03:01.280]Full screen presentation mode.
- [00:03:03.700]Okay, thank you.
- [00:03:05.840]Okay to get started, Vista's whole mission
- [00:03:09.150]is enabling human potential through training.
- [00:03:12.710]We've been in business for 30 years now.
- [00:03:16.050]I can't believe I'm saying that.
- [00:03:17.780]It just occurred to me last week that this is the 30th.
- [00:03:22.129]We're based out of Waterford Wisconsin, just outside
- [00:03:25.120]of Milwaukee, but have traveled worldwide,
- [00:03:28.270]and done many many training programs throughout the world,
- [00:03:33.140]in the mining industry and throughout the US and Canada
- [00:03:36.380]in the municipality and construction industry.
- [00:03:40.639]I'll talk a little bit about that in
- [00:03:42.400]in a couple of slides coming up.
- [00:03:48.374]The interesting thing, the part of how we got started was
- [00:03:53.200]Ray Peterson, the founder of the company started in '91.
- [00:03:57.270]He actually worked for Case Equipment Corporation
- [00:04:01.190]out of Racine, Wisconsin at the time.
- [00:04:03.700]And one of the jobs that he had was to travel
- [00:04:07.996]around the country and in fact, around the world
- [00:04:10.330]when Case delivered a fleet
- [00:04:12.060]of backhoes, or skid-steers, or excavators,
- [00:04:15.330]to various companies or countries in some cases.
- [00:04:19.450]And one of the things that he found out very quickly
- [00:04:22.930]was that he lacked he as in Case Corporation lacked
- [00:04:27.530]the training materials that were needed
- [00:04:29.290]to actually do some significant training,
- [00:04:32.250]quality training out in the field.
- [00:04:34.700]And he likened it when he described it to me
- [00:04:38.280]he's retired now, but when he described it to me
- [00:04:40.700]he likened it to, or to the general motors and some
- [00:04:44.060]of the car companies having great salespeople
- [00:04:47.990]to sell you a car and show you the controls
- [00:04:50.900]of what the turn signal did and how to work the radio.
- [00:04:54.170]But you know, those salespeople stopped
- [00:04:57.810]at that point for training.
- [00:04:59.297]And you had to learn how to drive the car somewhere else.
- [00:05:03.450]A lot of that was due to two factors in our minds anyway.
- [00:05:08.520]One was the liability of a GM
- [00:05:12.410]trying to teach people how to drive of cars.
- [00:05:15.110]They didn't want to, as a manufacturer
- [00:05:17.350]be exposed to that training liability
- [00:05:20.060]in case they were to teach somebody wrong.
- [00:05:23.050]And a second that's not their expertise
- [00:05:26.390]their expertise was building cars.
- [00:05:28.630]So he learned very quickly that his budgets
- [00:05:32.150]to create training materials at Case
- [00:05:35.833]were always denied because the manufacturer
- [00:05:40.190]did not wanna be involved in training.
- [00:05:42.640]Now some of the manufacturers out there
- [00:05:44.170]in construction industry have changed that tune
- [00:05:46.200]just a little bit and have provided some
- [00:05:49.600]some more basic training.
- [00:05:51.820]And in fact a lot of those manufacturers like Deere
- [00:05:55.000]they came to us to help them create training materials.
- [00:05:58.010]So we have a great partnership with Deere,
- [00:06:00.040]as well as Kubota and some other manufacturers.
- [00:06:05.590]The focus on equipment and in construction in mining
- [00:06:09.710]really keeps us in tune with what's going on
- [00:06:12.700]in those industries.
- [00:06:13.560]So many of our customers are municipalities like yourself,
- [00:06:18.810]that just have a need for training materials
- [00:06:22.950]being in the old days of VHS videos
- [00:06:25.150]back in the '90s and early 2000s
- [00:06:27.670]onto DVDs later on, and then more recently
- [00:06:31.360]in the last 10 years or so electronic, online delivering
- [00:06:36.050]as people get more internet capability.
- [00:06:38.610]And for the younger generation is more used
- [00:06:41.290]to being trained that way.
- [00:06:46.360]So as I mentioned a little bit
- [00:06:47.930]our customers are federal agencies.
- [00:06:49.690]One of our biggest customers was the military
- [00:06:52.370]for about five years.
- [00:06:54.720]Case would deliver 5,000 backhoes
- [00:06:57.468]and 4,000 some odd skid-steers
- [00:07:00.040]to the military and we'd go out and train their people.
- [00:07:02.800]Mostly here in the US but we had
- [00:07:04.460]some international travel with that too.
- [00:07:06.670]So we're very in tune with what training needs to occur.
- [00:07:12.260]In fact a lot of our programs are based
- [00:07:14.330]on military standards and military standards
- [00:07:17.940]for training are very very strict and well defined.
- [00:07:21.980]You have to do it in this way
- [00:07:24.510]so that everybody is very consistent
- [00:07:26.620]in what they receive as training.
- [00:07:29.750]And over the years that has really forced us to
- [00:07:33.180]take our product line and continuously improve it.
- [00:07:37.260]And so we'll be talking a little bit about that
- [00:07:39.250]and show you some demonstrations on that.
- [00:07:41.840]We also do business with you unions and trade schools.
- [00:07:44.360]They buy a lot of our materials, state DLTs, Arkansas City.
- [00:07:48.310]Arkansas DLT just recently purchased a number
- [00:07:51.430]of things from us.
- [00:07:53.100]Trade associations, like APWA
- [00:07:55.240]which some of you may be members of,
- [00:07:57.490]American Public Works Association.
- [00:07:59.640]We have a great partnership with them,
- [00:08:01.040]where they market materials through their websites
- [00:08:04.260]and you would actually get discounted fees
- [00:08:07.720]if you were buying it through them as a member.
- [00:08:12.290]And then hundreds of cities, counties, villages, and towns
- [00:08:14.810]across the US.
- [00:08:17.240]I know there's quite a few gravel roads in Nebraska.
- [00:08:20.400]I know there's also a significant Hispanic workforce
- [00:08:24.280]in Nebraska.
- [00:08:25.130]We do quite a bit of business in both of those areas.
- [00:08:30.890]Our products and services, what are they?
- [00:08:33.770]Well, lemme just talk first about what we have done
- [00:08:36.130]in the mining industry very briefly.
- [00:08:39.212]In the mining industry we've won
- [00:08:41.060]the Canadian Society for Training and Development Award
- [00:08:45.490]for being the best in class training.
- [00:08:48.110]We actually have a customer up in Wetaskiwin in Alberta
- [00:08:51.150]that they'll paid back literally
- [00:08:54.290]in a million dollars that they spend on training
- [00:08:57.010]with us over a number of years.
- [00:08:58.710]Their pay back a week,
- [00:09:01.880]they moved more mining material
- [00:09:05.483]to get whatever they were mining out of the material
- [00:09:08.520]for in that example was oil,
- [00:09:10.520]but it could be gold or nickel or copper.
- [00:09:13.070]And so we won the award based on ,
- [00:09:16.160]being able to not only significantly produced
- [00:09:19.040]their productivity and their training that goes with that,
- [00:09:22.260]but to also reduce their incidents by half.
- [00:09:27.340]So they had half the incidents after they implemented
- [00:09:29.740]one of our training programs, just one of them.
- [00:09:33.050]And the rest of them obviously we didn't study in detail,
- [00:09:36.260]but we're expecting the same results or similar results.
- [00:09:41.680]So what are the products?
- [00:09:43.797]And these days we do sell DVDs
- [00:09:46.340]and checklists books for preop inspections.
- [00:09:49.330]Those are the physical products that we still mail out
- [00:09:52.230]to people, but more and more
- [00:09:54.720]about 90% of our business these days
- [00:09:56.790]is self study e-learning programs and videos.
- [00:10:00.030]So what's the difference between an e-learning program
- [00:10:02.240]and video.
- [00:10:03.478]E-learning is where you interact with the screen.
- [00:10:07.600]You listen to a slide for perhaps 30 seconds, 60 seconds,
- [00:10:13.360]and then you proceed if you are ready as a student
- [00:10:16.380]to go to the next screen and you go through an hour or two
- [00:10:19.260]of training in that way and take a final exam at the end,
- [00:10:22.150]that's e-learning.
- [00:10:23.370]Whereas the videos that we had, used to have on VHS and DVD
- [00:10:27.550]there are now all electronic and offered online.
- [00:10:30.620]So you would watch a 15 to 30 minute video depending
- [00:10:34.570]on the topic there's 87 of those videos available
- [00:10:39.410]and then take a quiz at the end of it.
- [00:10:42.070]So self-study e-learning and videos
- [00:10:43.930]is the main product line.
- [00:10:46.080]And then the secondary product line is we enable trainers.
- [00:10:50.870]We're not really in the business, don't want to be
- [00:10:53.260]in the business of actually going out and training people
- [00:10:56.560]on site at every location, we will do that.
- [00:11:00.010]That's not a problem.
- [00:11:00.980]We'll support the Nebraska LTAP
- [00:11:03.270]in making that happen for you if you need such a thing.
- [00:11:07.330]But the real mission is to enable you
- [00:11:09.870]with materials, training materials.
- [00:11:12.170]And that's how we came up with the Jurnee,
- [00:11:14.347]a little trick on the spelling their,
- [00:11:15.500]Jurnee Instructor Kits for Trainers.
- [00:11:17.700]So if you have somebody who is fairly good
- [00:11:21.110]at equipment operation,
- [00:11:24.020]they may or may not make a good trainer.
- [00:11:28.509]And Buck we'll be talking about that in a few minutes,
- [00:11:31.370]but if you have somebody
- [00:11:32.500]that you think might be a good trainer
- [00:11:34.240]and has some equipment operation experience,
- [00:11:37.690]these instructor kits are a big package
- [00:11:41.010]of things that they can use to put
- [00:11:43.050]on a professional program,
- [00:11:44.930]a training program for your equipment operators.
- [00:11:48.400]So it could be one of your star operators
- [00:11:50.210]who just has a knack for training,
- [00:11:51.780]or it could be somebody that is a good trainer.
- [00:11:54.560]We'll talk more about that in a couple of slides coming up.
- [00:11:57.670]So keep in mind that there's two main product lines
- [00:12:01.410]that we're talking about here, that you can get access
- [00:12:05.570]through the Nebraska LTAP.
- [00:12:08.880]Self study, e-learning and videos being the first one,
- [00:12:11.360]and Jurnee Instructor Kits for Trainers
- [00:12:13.340]being the second one.
- [00:12:16.870]Also we've handle the line
- [00:12:20.960]of simulators that are based on PCs.
- [00:12:23.970]So they're very portable, can be taken from site to site,
- [00:12:27.030]or it can be set up on one site and just left there.
- [00:12:30.840]These training simulators are available
- [00:12:32.550]and anybody who wants to contact us,
- [00:12:34.890]later on we can talk specifics, but they're listed
- [00:12:38.100]for backhoes, skid-steers, wheel loaders, et cetera.
- [00:12:43.620]And they start in the 14 to $15,000 range
- [00:12:47.190]and move up from there depending upon options.
- [00:12:49.640]But they're a very good tool for training people
- [00:12:52.190]without having to take the equipment out of service,
- [00:12:55.420]or in fact place anybody in danger on real equipment
- [00:12:58.490]when they're first learning.
- [00:13:01.048]I also mentioned that there are Spanish language versions
- [00:13:03.490]of quite a few of our programs ever increasing all the time.
- [00:13:08.510]Now, one of the things that,
- [00:13:11.510]I've mentioned we were focused
- [00:13:12.670]on enabling equipment operator training.
- [00:13:16.380]One of the key things is that if you're training somebody,
- [00:13:22.240]it's not important what you train them on,
- [00:13:25.130]it's what they learn and what they apply in the field
- [00:13:28.260]that's more important than anything.
- [00:13:29.810]So the materials you have to have
- [00:13:33.570]very consistent materials to be able
- [00:13:36.120]to encourage the learner to go out there
- [00:13:39.070]and actually apply what they've learned
- [00:13:41.150]and retain, more important retain
- [00:13:43.250]and apply what they've learned in the field.
- [00:13:45.030]You're fine. I'm sorry?
- [00:13:53.170]Okay so anybody out in the field
- [00:13:57.310]that uses our instructor kits,
- [00:14:00.560]our mission is to really enable them to be able
- [00:14:05.247]to retain that knowledge and apply it in the field.
- [00:14:11.528]Okay so let's talk about the two product lines,
- [00:14:14.210]firstly self study e-learning and videos,
- [00:14:17.920]and then we'll come back
- [00:14:19.120]to the instructor kits in a few minutes.
- [00:14:22.220]So what are the e-learning and videos?
- [00:14:24.350]Concise, task-based training
- [00:14:25.673]one to two hour operator courses.
- [00:14:28.233]Well they're available on online seven by 24.
- [00:14:31.470]You can log in and we've had people take training
- [00:14:34.700]in the middle of the evening, 3:00 AM, midnight.
- [00:14:38.280]You know, basically anytime you want to,
- [00:14:41.300]from their homes or from the operation.
- [00:14:45.910]It can run on a computer, standard computer,
- [00:14:48.920]windows computer, any computer with a browser, I should say.
- [00:14:52.990]It can run on a tablet, can run on a mobile phone.
- [00:14:55.470]Now a mobile phone screen is fairly small,
- [00:14:57.440]but it can occur if on that and it'll work
- [00:15:02.290]if you want it to.
- [00:15:05.130]There is test under every video or every e-learning course
- [00:15:09.920]that measures the knowledge retention.
- [00:15:14.032]It measures it at a point in time
- [00:15:15.590]right after they've learned it.
- [00:15:16.790]So it's very important to follow up in the field
- [00:15:22.100]on a later date, a couple of days later, or a week later
- [00:15:25.190]to find out just how much knowledge was retained,
- [00:15:28.870]and to reinforce what was taught
- [00:15:31.160]in the online learning or the video out in the field.
- [00:15:35.330]And that's where your trainers come in.
- [00:15:36.870]We'll talk more about that in a few minutes.
- [00:15:39.650]There's also in the system, a certificate
- [00:15:41.500]of completion that can be printed, and it's also stored
- [00:15:44.130]in our system to later retrieve if you wanna find out
- [00:15:48.040]if somebody went through training, and how long ago,
- [00:15:50.040]and what it was.
- [00:15:56.720]So how can you use this training?
- [00:15:58.740]Well, lot of our customers really have the issue
- [00:16:04.981]of training a younger workforce, and a lot
- [00:16:09.390]of the baby boomers that are out there are retiring.
- [00:16:13.200]We've heard this for the last five to 10 years
- [00:16:15.660]in our industry, especially all the great knowledge
- [00:16:18.560]and experience is really leaving all of our operations,
- [00:16:22.070]municipalities, construction companies.
- [00:16:23.630]We all have the same challenge.
- [00:16:25.530]Even the mining sector has got the same challenge
- [00:16:28.350]in that that age group is retiring in droves,
- [00:16:32.770]and the younger generation coming in to learn this,
- [00:16:36.400]they're very eager to learn,
- [00:16:38.030]but they are used to being taught online and learning
- [00:16:42.390]for themselves rather than being taught by somebody.
- [00:16:45.430]I think that what we're seeing is that
- [00:16:47.480]is a great combination, is that they can go ahead and learn
- [00:16:50.510]on their own and then have more interesting
- [00:16:54.760]and intelligent questions for when they get
- [00:16:57.750]on the actual equipment with a real trainer.
- [00:16:59.940]You still need to have that real trainer in place.
- [00:17:02.650]There's no question about that in our industry.
- [00:17:08.220]There's nothing like being able to get
- [00:17:09.810]on the equipment and actually use it.
- [00:17:11.450]So you can't learn everything online,
- [00:17:13.450]but at least it's a good start.
- [00:17:18.630]So refresher and training and new operator training
- [00:17:21.130]covered that.
- [00:17:22.600]The courses also provide training on controls,
- [00:17:26.320]you know, what are the controls is supposed to do,
- [00:17:28.540]if somebody has never been on equipment.
- [00:17:30.050]You know it used to be that you could pull somebody
- [00:17:32.330]as a new employee off the farm,
- [00:17:34.580]and they would just understand how to operate a dozer
- [00:17:37.090]or a skid steer or some other equipment.
- [00:17:39.830]And more and more I'm finding our customers are saying
- [00:17:42.510]we just can't find that kind of experience anymore.
- [00:17:44.830]We're having to teach somebody who wants to learn
- [00:17:47.917]how to operate a backhoe, or a skid steer,
- [00:17:49.900]and has never ever touched one.
- [00:17:52.200]And that's a challenge, you've got to start somewhere,
- [00:17:55.210]talking about what the controls do,
- [00:17:57.080]how to do a pre-op inspection so you know that
- [00:17:59.020]the equipment is safe before you get on it,
- [00:18:01.660]and how to do common tasks in general, before you get out
- [00:18:05.710]in the field and actually try and practice them.
- [00:18:10.360]Now, one of the other things that online learning is,
- [00:18:13.470]it minimizes in-person classroom training.
- [00:18:17.620]What we find is that a lot of our customers
- [00:18:21.370]train one or two people at a time.
- [00:18:23.060]They don't have typically waves of people
- [00:18:27.143]that they hire, you know, 10 people all at once.
- [00:18:29.240]And they put them through this classroom training
- [00:18:31.060]and go out in the field and train.
- [00:18:33.180]Some do, but very much often these days
- [00:18:38.350]we're seeing that we just hired somebody
- [00:18:41.120]we have to train them.
- [00:18:41.970]Maybe we have a second person that's just been on recently,
- [00:18:45.020]and now you've taken whoever your trainer is,
- [00:18:49.190]and you've dedicated them to one or two people.
- [00:18:52.210]And in a classroom or out in the field,
- [00:18:55.970]it's not only very expensive and time consuming,
- [00:18:58.820]but it's also perhaps a little bit ineffective
- [00:19:01.580]because you don't know what that trainer is teaching
- [00:19:04.640]to those individuals, versus next month you have
- [00:19:07.580]a different trainer and they're teaching something else.
- [00:19:10.240]So what this online learning does,
- [00:19:12.800]and it helps to minimize the classroom time.
- [00:19:16.670]It allows for the individuals that are trained
- [00:19:19.980]to be trained consistently the same way every time.
- [00:19:23.690]And it allows for the trainer that you do have,
- [00:19:27.410]which is probably not a dedicated trainer in most cases,
- [00:19:31.220]that person allows them to be spending more time
- [00:19:33.990]out in the field, not on the basics
- [00:19:36.510]of how the pre-op inspection should be done,
- [00:19:39.690]and the common tasks and controls.
- [00:19:42.060]So really minimizing the in-person classroom time,
- [00:19:46.060]as allowed more effective in the field training.
- [00:19:50.300]And the last bullet point there,
- [00:19:52.050]I can't emphasize this enough consistency is very key.
- [00:19:56.790]Have all of your people, all of your operators
- [00:20:00.150]be trained consistently over time so that they all operate
- [00:20:03.350]the same way, and they know what the dangerous are.
- [00:20:08.710]So shifting gears for a minute.
- [00:20:10.080]Okay we talked in general about what these courses are.
- [00:20:13.570]What is the Nebraska LTAP offering you at this point?
- [00:20:18.130]These self-study courses that are available right now
- [00:20:21.900]online, and you can sign up through the Nebraska LTAP.
- [00:20:27.600]These courses are just a small list
- [00:20:29.940]of all the courses that we have.
- [00:20:32.510]I know that they would encourage you to talk to them
- [00:20:35.600]about other courses you may need,
- [00:20:37.580]and we can perhaps fill that need.
- [00:20:40.270]But we wanted to focus in on just these key areas
- [00:20:43.350]for the presentation today and for the moment.
- [00:20:47.150]So the motor grader road maintenance for example, is a video
- [00:20:50.190]with a quiz, and you can see that there's a wheel loader
- [00:20:52.810]a crawler excavator, dozer, and backhoe video and quiz.
- [00:20:56.220]Those are available right now
- [00:20:57.670]and you can sign up for them via the LTAP.
- [00:21:01.910]Then there's two courses down in the bottom motor grader
- [00:21:04.470]and OSHA excavation safety orientation.
- [00:21:08.150]Those are full e-learning courses.
- [00:21:09.880]And as I explained earlier those are more interactive
- [00:21:13.120]than just sitting and watching a video
- [00:21:14.650]for 20 minutes on the screen.
- [00:21:16.380]They're more interactive where every 30 to 60 seconds
- [00:21:18.940]you're clicking to go to the next slide
- [00:21:21.410]and you can take your time and go back and forward.
- [00:21:23.740]And it's a lot easier to navigate on those two courses.
- [00:21:27.270]This list of seven courses gives you a sample
- [00:21:30.500]of what is available and the various,
- [00:21:32.580]the two technologies that we offer.
- [00:21:35.570]So again, follow up with your LTAP if you're interested
- [00:21:38.290]in these and or any other topics.
- [00:21:44.610]In addition to those topics, I just wanted to give you
- [00:21:47.470]a general review of some of the other things that Vista
- [00:21:50.130]is offering to people in need
- [00:21:55.230]of training in the equipment industry.
- [00:21:58.110]Pre-operation, checklists and videos,
- [00:22:02.240]mounting and dismounting of equipment.
- [00:22:03.990]It's amazing how many accidents we hear
- [00:22:06.190]about people just, you know
- [00:22:07.677]not doing the right mounting and dismounting of equipment,
- [00:22:10.380]and breaking the leg, falling off the equipment.
- [00:22:13.440]We have training specifically dedicated just to that.
- [00:22:17.090]Rigging and lifting a lot of you use backhoe loaders
- [00:22:20.810]and use, put a sling on a bucket
- [00:22:25.230]and lift something into place, a pipe or whatever.
- [00:22:28.350]We have topics probably about eight different topics
- [00:22:31.190]on rigging and lifting.
- [00:22:32.440]Some of them specific to using a backhoe to rigging
- [00:22:35.410]and lifts properly so that nobody gets hurt.
- [00:22:39.020]Roadside mowing, some of you do that road crew,
- [00:22:42.750]safety and work zone.
- [00:22:43.970]You know what happens inside the work zone sometimes
- [00:22:46.010]is more dangerous than what's going around the work zone.
- [00:22:49.890]We've had a number of stories there.
- [00:22:52.300]Unfortunately, I get to hear a lot of the stories that
- [00:22:54.940]happen in the industry and not many of them are very good.
- [00:22:59.191]And our training programs, a lot of times come out of
- [00:23:03.020]a customer will call us and say,
- [00:23:04.487]"you know I had this incident at our site
- [00:23:07.630]and I need to not have it again.
- [00:23:09.550]And what do you have for us?"
- [00:23:11.640]And a lot of our programs come out of research
- [00:23:14.240]that we have kept track of those types of incidents that we
- [00:23:19.280]have heard about over the years.
- [00:23:23.750]Unfortunately, some of them are very sad,
- [00:23:26.070]but whatever we can do to keep that second accident
- [00:23:32.290]or incident from happening, we're up for it
- [00:23:34.880]in helping you in any way.
- [00:23:37.570]Safely exposing buried utilities,
- [00:23:39.310]we get a ton of business for that topic alone.
- [00:23:45.870]Many many times we're finding that people are digging
- [00:23:49.670]in an area that even if it's marked
- [00:23:52.680]by the utility or the 811 call center,
- [00:23:57.600]a lot of times people just aren't educated,
- [00:23:59.830]the operators are just not educated enough
- [00:24:01.640]to understand what those symbols mean,
- [00:24:05.650]how close to it can they dig,
- [00:24:07.240]when do they need to hand dig other options.
- [00:24:10.310]So it's been a very popular title for us.
- [00:24:16.300]Now let's switch gears to the instructor kits.
- [00:24:18.380]So we talked about the e-learning and the videos for
- [00:24:21.400]the last few slides, switch gears to the instructor kits,
- [00:24:25.295]Jurnee Instructor Kits for Trainers.
- [00:24:26.810]So if you have somebody that is capable of training
- [00:24:32.046]and we'll talk about that more, and how do you pick
- [00:24:34.100]that person in a few minutes we'll talk about.
- [00:24:35.750]But these 14 titles are available now
- [00:24:39.360]and we continue to add to this list.
- [00:24:41.520]So you can see just about every type of equipment
- [00:24:44.680]we have available for us and think of these instructor kits
- [00:24:49.030]as everything about the trainer.
- [00:24:50.810]So, for example, when we're called to go out and do training
- [00:24:54.870]for, I don't know, pick a a customer anywhere in the States,
- [00:25:00.620]when we go out, one of our trainers will literally grab one
- [00:25:05.760]of these kits off the shelf and take it with them.
- [00:25:09.340]All of the materials that they need are in these kits.
- [00:25:13.939]In most cases, you can log on to any of our
- [00:25:19.690]to our site and be able to pull down
- [00:25:21.940]any of the materials that are in the kit,
- [00:25:23.630]I'll talk about what the materials are in a moment,
- [00:25:26.310]and print them as needed.
- [00:25:28.130]So a checklist for what to do when training somebody
- [00:25:33.000]on doing a pre-operative inspection in the field,
- [00:25:35.570]it's in the kit.
- [00:25:36.890]A checklist for evaluating an operator on digging
- [00:25:40.390]a trench X feet wide by three feet deep, it's in the kit.
- [00:25:46.200]Basically everything you would need as a trainer to go out
- [00:25:50.400]and actually perform training for these types of equipment.
- [00:25:57.440]So what is in the kit?
- [00:25:58.770]I mentioned a little bit about it.
- [00:26:00.886]There is a presentation of two to four hours,
- [00:26:04.650]if you want to do this, it's not required.
- [00:26:09.460]If you want your trainer to spend two to four hours
- [00:26:11.790]in a classroom somebody
- [00:26:13.928]they can go through the presentation.
- [00:26:17.110]One of the things that we always point out
- [00:26:18.880]is that that same exact presentation is available
- [00:26:22.010]in a self-study mode so that you can eliminate that portion
- [00:26:25.410]of the classroom by having your trainees
- [00:26:28.190]go through this presentation on their own, self study.
- [00:26:32.940]So part of this kit allows you to do a classroom
- [00:26:35.360]instead of that.
- [00:26:37.180]There's an instructor guide.
- [00:26:38.670]There's a preparation checklist
- [00:26:40.360]for anybody who's never put on a classroom before.
- [00:26:43.080]There's an attendance roster.
- [00:26:44.630]There's tips on what to teach and how to teach it.
- [00:26:47.730]Recommended questions for discussion with trainees.
- [00:26:50.730]An exam or a final test, you know, some kind of tests
- [00:26:54.110]with an answer key.
- [00:26:55.630]There's a certificate that can be manually produced
- [00:26:59.200]instead of the self study certificate.
- [00:27:01.790]There's student note pages that can be handed out
- [00:27:03.780]to the students.
- [00:27:05.810]And probably the most important,
- [00:27:07.850]which is why I highlighted in a different color here,
- [00:27:10.450]in the field checklist and evaluation forms.
- [00:27:12.690]Okay so now we've got the training done,
- [00:27:14.500]the base training done.
- [00:27:15.910]Now we're gonna go out in the field.
- [00:27:17.340]What is it that you do with the trainee?
- [00:27:19.460]As a trainer, what is it that you're supposed to do
- [00:27:21.490]to get them acclimated, to using the equipment in real life?
- [00:27:25.900]On the equipment training we have suggested checklist
- [00:27:30.260]and evaluation forms that you can use an indoor modify
- [00:27:35.500]to help make that training out in the field
- [00:27:38.340]more consistent and keep it consistent.
- [00:27:41.890]These forms are exactly the same style
- [00:27:45.460]and format for all 14 of our kits.
- [00:27:48.820]They're not the same information, obviously
- [00:27:50.690]because each piece of equipment is different,
- [00:27:53.040]but the style and format once you understand
- [00:27:55.700]one kit and how it works,
- [00:27:57.230]you can use any of the 14 kits the same way.
- [00:28:03.210]Okay now I have a kind of a visual, it's a video
- [00:28:08.810]that is three minutes long, and we'll take you
- [00:28:11.730]through what's in the Jurnee kit
- [00:28:13.990]and how they're generally used.
- [00:28:15.910]And so please, Buck, if you could just raise your hand
- [00:28:19.290]if you don't hear the video
- [00:28:20.840]otherwise we'll assume it's working
- [00:28:24.190]Welcome to the Vista Training
- [00:28:26.397]Jurnee Instructor Kits where we believe training
- [00:28:29.610]is not a destination but a journey.
- [00:28:33.280]Each Jurnee Instructor Kit contains all the materials
- [00:28:36.740]you need to complete an equipment training session.
- [00:28:40.090]Instructor kits are divided into four basic areas,
- [00:28:43.810]plan, train, practice and evaluate.
- [00:28:48.485]Each kid follows this order no matter the equipment type.
- [00:28:52.510]All materials included will help the instructor
- [00:28:55.460]to complete the entire training process.
- [00:28:58.850]To plan for the training session,
- [00:29:01.000]the kit includes rosters, how to set up the classroom
- [00:29:04.330]and field areas, hints on how to plan
- [00:29:06.790]for the training class and more.
- [00:29:09.530]To train operators, the kit includes both
- [00:29:12.290]a training overview and a step-by-step instruction
- [00:29:15.910]on completing the equipment training.
- [00:29:18.870]To practice the training, each kit includes
- [00:29:21.640]hands-on exercises to get the students familiar
- [00:29:24.890]with the equipment and complete operating tasks.
- [00:29:28.380]Finally, each kit includes ways to evaluate the operators
- [00:29:33.260]and assess their ability to actually operate the equipment.
- [00:29:38.460]Materials included in each kit are,
- [00:29:41.270]access to a projectable Vista course presentation,
- [00:29:45.030]access to projectable copies of key instructor materials
- [00:29:48.740]for classroom or group instruction, and access to instructor
- [00:29:52.740]and student materials for use throughout the training.
- [00:29:57.220]Each projectable Vista equipment course presentation,
- [00:30:01.050]includes a two to four hour overview of the equipment
- [00:30:04.800]and instructions on how to conduct basic,
- [00:30:07.480]and sometimes advanced operating tasks.
- [00:30:11.930]While conducting the training, there are many times
- [00:30:14.770]when the instructor will have groups of students to train,
- [00:30:18.130]to assist the instructor in completing this training
- [00:30:21.040]and getting the class involved, each instructor kit
- [00:30:24.210]includes the group presentation materials.
- [00:30:27.040]This would include items such as the course objectives,
- [00:30:30.460]a discussion guide, and reconnect topics to name a few.
- [00:30:35.660]Everything an instructor needs to complete operator
- [00:30:38.530]training is available to view or print
- [00:30:41.590]beginning with the trainers guide,
- [00:30:43.680]the main resource for the instructor.
- [00:30:46.360]Instructors can also print the roster, objectives,
- [00:30:50.160]discussion guide, reconnect topics, checklists,
- [00:30:53.760]and evaluation tools.
- [00:30:57.810]We've even included some materials to assist the student
- [00:31:01.200]in achieving success in training, these items are available
- [00:31:05.210]for the instructor to view and print for their students.
- [00:31:08.370]These items include a complete student guide,
- [00:31:11.690]course objectives, and checklists with guidelines.
- [00:31:16.990]As you have seen each Vista Jurnee Instructor Kit
- [00:31:20.660]includes everything you need to complete a well-planned
- [00:31:24.150]and structured equipment operator training.
- [00:31:27.350]Vista makes it easy for you to conduct
- [00:31:29.730]a professional training session
- [00:31:31.780]that helps keep your operators safe.
- [00:31:34.640]Order your kit today,
- [00:31:35.960]and begin training your operators right away.
- [00:31:43.000]Okay so the last slide I have
- [00:31:44.890]before we introduced Buck is that
- [00:31:49.000]to kind of frame this out we've talked about
- [00:31:51.880]the first bullet the materials, the courses and materials.
- [00:31:55.250]So you've got the e-learning and the videos
- [00:31:57.880]on the first a dash, and then you've got
- [00:32:01.420]the Jurnee Instructor Kits which we just went through,
- [00:32:04.150]but that's only half the picture.
- [00:32:06.050]The other half of the picture is training your trainer,
- [00:32:08.780]making sure that your trainer, whoever that is,
- [00:32:11.820]is the right person and is able to effectively
- [00:32:17.690]use these materials that we talked about.
- [00:32:20.670]So with that, I'll introduce Buck Hillestad,
- [00:32:25.090]and he can talk just for a few minutes
- [00:32:28.520]and introduce himself, and then I'm sure,
- [00:32:31.830]I think Buck would have just a couple
- [00:32:33.490]of slides you want to go through too, right?
- [00:32:37.170]Okay I'll stop sharing.
- [00:32:41.350]Go ahead Buck.
- [00:32:42.210]I do have a couple of slides
- [00:32:43.480]that I would be delighted to share.
- [00:32:45.110]What would a webinar be without a PowerPoint presentation.
- [00:32:49.360]But first let me just give you a little bit of my background
- [00:32:52.320]just so you've got some idea who is the chubby bald guy
- [00:32:56.570]that may be working with your folks.
- [00:33:00.230]The short story in terms of my introduction is this.
- [00:33:05.440]I worked for Case Corporation in Racine for 20 years,
- [00:33:08.480]literally to the very day.
- [00:33:11.260]At least 10 years of that was in the sales and marketing
- [00:33:14.600]and training department.
- [00:33:17.240]I share that with you only because I like to feel
- [00:33:21.220]I've got some real I know I have some real world experience
- [00:33:25.220]in terms of delivering construction equipment training,
- [00:33:28.190]working with in the construction field
- [00:33:30.790]and that sort of thing.
- [00:33:32.746]After 20 years at Case I decided to go
- [00:33:34.980]into business for myself, and had been fortunate enough
- [00:33:37.540]to be able to partner with the Vista folks
- [00:33:40.140]for pretty much that entire time.
- [00:33:43.640]What I primarily focus on almost exclusively these days
- [00:33:48.020]are train the trainer programs.
- [00:33:49.930]And I also do leadership skills programs.
- [00:33:52.940]I do a lot of work for the University of Wisconsin
- [00:33:56.100]Milwaukee, school of continuing education
- [00:33:58.880]and so there are other extensions along with a litany
- [00:34:02.920]of other organizations that I've come in contact with
- [00:34:07.010]and primarily through the UWM.
- [00:34:09.680]For UWM, one of the classes I offer
- [00:34:13.720]is a six day train the trainer class.
- [00:34:16.850]Three days on designing training,
- [00:34:18.960]three days on delivering training.
- [00:34:20.960]In addition to that, I do a bunch of customized work
- [00:34:25.570]on the job training specifically and some other things.
- [00:34:29.110]Again, I offer that to you only because I like
- [00:34:32.510]to feel like I can take some academic training theory
- [00:34:36.000]so to speak and grounded in some real world experience.
- [00:34:41.350]So let me share a couple things with you
- [00:34:45.290]around this whole on the job training thing.
- [00:34:48.240]I think there are some very unique things about the type
- [00:34:52.200]of training that your folks are gonna be doing.
- [00:34:55.150]That I can definitely provide some things
- [00:34:58.760]to help them with that.
- [00:35:00.090]So see if I can get this done here.
- [00:35:11.280]Okay I'm assuming everybody could see this really
- [00:35:14.660]cool Vista Training train the trainer slide.
- [00:35:18.700]All right first of let me just say this to start out with
- [00:35:23.810]as it relates to on the job training,
- [00:35:26.500]on the job training is unique in one specific area.
- [00:35:30.690]And I can see this somewhat anecdotally
- [00:35:33.340]for in terms of evidence, but as far as experience goes
- [00:35:37.920]I'm very confident to make this statement.
- [00:35:43.720]The biggest factor that will determine
- [00:35:45.560]the success of on the job training,
- [00:35:48.820]because it is almost always done one-on-one
- [00:35:51.650]or even maybe sometimes one-on-two.
- [00:35:54.150]But the biggest factor that determines
- [00:35:58.050]the effectiveness of their training is going to be
- [00:36:01.540]the relationship for lack of a better term
- [00:36:04.720]between the instructor or the coach and the learner.
- [00:36:10.480]It's not always subject matter experts are not necessarily
- [00:36:14.860]always the best trainers.
- [00:36:17.890]It doesn't mean that they can't be,
- [00:36:19.760]and you certainly can provide them some skills,
- [00:36:23.240]but what we tend to do and I've made the same mistake myself
- [00:36:26.710]quite frankly working at Case
- [00:36:28.480]was to assume somebody that was really good at something
- [00:36:31.490]would be good at transferring
- [00:36:33.540]that knowledge onto somebody else.
- [00:36:35.880]And that may or may not be true.
- [00:36:38.310]So I'll bet you everybody in here at some point
- [00:36:40.700]has had somebody train them or coach them on a specific task
- [00:36:46.740]that maybe was unwilling or unable,
- [00:36:49.360]or didn't possess the interpersonal skills
- [00:36:52.140]to be able to convey that knowledge.
- [00:36:54.570]And in fact, what tends to happen under those circumstances,
- [00:36:59.700]it not only is frustrating for the trainer,
- [00:37:04.210]but it is also for the learner.
- [00:37:05.950]And then there is an environment created
- [00:37:08.030]if it's uncomfortable, that isn't risk free.
- [00:37:14.470]In other words the learner isn't comfortable
- [00:37:16.620]asking questions of the coach
- [00:37:19.870]depending on how they receive them, et cetera
- [00:37:22.490]and subsequently the return on that training investment
- [00:37:25.670]is vastly diminished.
- [00:37:27.230]And in worst case scenarios, it affects turnover,
- [00:37:31.990]and re invest time in training people when they first start,
- [00:37:36.410]only to them believe the organization,
- [00:37:40.010]because they had a bad experience with trainers.
- [00:37:43.100]So we've got some things that can help with that.
- [00:37:47.610]Here's some ways that we can prepare your
- [00:37:49.670]on the job coaches slash trainers
- [00:37:53.480]to make sure that they are successful.
- [00:37:56.150]First of all, we will supply you
- [00:37:59.130]with some information on picking the right person.
- [00:38:01.920]Isn't a perfect methodology no,
- [00:38:06.680]but I can certainly provide you with some thoughts
- [00:38:10.340]around the eight characteristics of the most successful
- [00:38:15.190]coaches and trainers that you could look
- [00:38:17.970]for those characteristics within one
- [00:38:20.410]of your potential trainers and help you pick one of them.
- [00:38:24.080]In fact, I would submit to you a good solid knowledge
- [00:38:28.070]of the equipment of course is essential, but again
- [00:38:31.540]your best operator or your most knowledgeable person
- [00:38:34.460]may or may be the best trainer that you pick.
- [00:38:38.870]The one thing I'll tell you, regardless
- [00:38:41.640]of how you go forward is when you are picking a trainer,
- [00:38:45.960]please make sure they want to do it.
- [00:38:48.580]Desire to be the trainer is perhaps the number one
- [00:38:52.650]most important factor, so food for thought there.
- [00:38:55.860]Another way, or part of our preparation here
- [00:38:59.740]is we've got a very solid 16 hour program
- [00:39:03.430]that We can deliver in four hour blocks.
- [00:39:06.200]In fact, I would go so far as to say
- [00:39:08.850]we could even vary the length of those blocks.
- [00:39:12.380]I think the four-hour block is primarily is good one,
- [00:39:16.970]but we can work around that,
- [00:39:19.987]and we can work around your schedule too.
- [00:39:22.600]The last time I did this
- [00:39:24.200]we did it in four consecutive Saturday mornings.
- [00:39:27.320]So we've got a fair amount of flexibility
- [00:39:29.960]working with you and your folks
- [00:39:31.880]to pick out a time that is convenient for them.
- [00:39:34.160]And what I wanna see convenient for you
- [00:39:36.530]and your organization.
- [00:39:38.480]And what I wanna say to you about
- [00:39:39.990]the 16 hour training program that is delivered virtually
- [00:39:43.760]including a zoom meetings like this.
- [00:39:48.834]It is not a death by PowerPoint type of training program.
- [00:39:54.630]What we do with this program is both synchronous
- [00:39:57.660]and asynchronous as they call it in the training world.
- [00:40:00.990]In other words it is as interactive
- [00:40:04.250]as you can make it short of being an instructor led program.
- [00:40:07.460]And we've gotten some good feedback on that.
- [00:40:09.510]I can tell you, given this pandemic
- [00:40:13.160]and advances in technology in the last four or five years.
- [00:40:20.730]We are capable will have producing virtual e-learning types
- [00:40:24.310]of programs that I would've never thought could be as good
- [00:40:27.780]as they are, compared to instructor led program.
- [00:40:31.540]So lots of advances there.
- [00:40:34.540]The other thing that we will help you with is
- [00:40:36.780]a post training support for your trainers.
- [00:40:39.020]I am available forever
- [00:40:43.300]for anybody that goes through the program.
- [00:40:45.950]If they have questions about
- [00:40:47.620]how to deliver some of the Jurnee kits.
- [00:40:50.360]If they have questions about how another the project,
- [00:40:53.140]any way that I can help them post training, contact me
- [00:40:57.570]I will guarantee you that I'll get back to them.
- [00:40:59.960]Even if they just want to bounce an idea
- [00:41:01.680]off somebody or wants more information about a topic
- [00:41:05.610]or anything along those lines.
- [00:41:07.390]That's what we're here for.
- [00:41:08.440]My focus is to help those folks be successful,
- [00:41:12.430]and sometimes post training can add to that.
- [00:41:16.310]So we've got that available for sure.
- [00:41:18.890]And in addition to that, we're talking
- [00:41:21.430]about a potential actually setting up maybe a monthly
- [00:41:25.080]or whatever to be determined opportunity
- [00:41:28.340]for people that are doing training,
- [00:41:31.220]to do some networking on a basis, some online meetings
- [00:41:36.070]for a statewide network of trainers that is very valuable.
- [00:41:40.230]In doing these train the trainer programs that I do for UWM,
- [00:41:44.040]One of the ancillary benefits to that has been,
- [00:41:47.330]because this is a public seminar and I get people,
- [00:41:50.060]usually groups of 16 that are from all different
- [00:41:52.890]organizations, they tend to develop a network
- [00:41:56.570]and bounce ideas off one another
- [00:41:59.070]and continue to support each other.
- [00:42:00.950]So that's something else that we can provide
- [00:42:03.310]to help support the folks in addition to
- [00:42:06.323]well the technical information.
- [00:42:09.300]Okay, I'm gonna talk you through briefly
- [00:42:12.060]the agenda for the 16 hour program.
- [00:42:14.530]I'm not gonna bore you and read you all of this,
- [00:42:16.880]but I just want to give you some idea
- [00:42:18.910]of what's involved in this a 16 hour program.
- [00:42:22.790]We start out with some introductions
- [00:42:24.210]and logistics of course, ground rules, expectations.
- [00:42:28.730]From there is the first of many exercises and discussions
- [00:42:33.520]that are incorporated into this program.
- [00:42:35.920]There's learning to fly article, essentially
- [00:42:39.219]it's not even two pages.
- [00:42:42.310]I ask people to read this and it, what it points out
- [00:42:47.230]is two different approaches to delivering training
- [00:42:50.870]to somebody, teaching them to fly.
- [00:42:53.905]One, not very good, and the other one
- [00:42:56.930]was pretty doggone good.
- [00:42:58.260]So what this helps me do is to bring out
- [00:43:01.980]why certain techniques are effective,
- [00:43:04.800]why some are ineffective, and primarily again
- [00:43:08.050]what this starts to get people to think about
- [00:43:10.910]is how important again that relationship between trainee
- [00:43:14.930]and trainer is in terms of teaching somebody something.
- [00:43:19.110]We talk about what is a coach definition.
- [00:43:22.520]What's in it for them as a coach.
- [00:43:24.470]Some of the characteristics of an effective coaching.
- [00:43:28.160]They do a self assessment so that they can
- [00:43:30.720]optimize strengths and maybe look for areas for improvement.
- [00:43:34.630]And then I ask them to do some action planning, meaning
- [00:43:37.920]at the end of the first block, let's say, or at each block
- [00:43:41.700]I asked them to look for opportunities to apply
- [00:43:44.530]what they have learned before we get together the next time.
- [00:43:48.400]And that provides them an opportunity for us
- [00:43:50.830]so when we get back together to talk about what went well,
- [00:43:53.670]anything they might do differently.
- [00:43:55.690]And again, it is application upon application if you will.
- [00:44:02.610]The coach trainee relationship reinforcing
- [00:44:04.930]somehow important that is.
- [00:44:06.950]Effective communication, you might ask
- [00:44:10.700]or you probably won't ask why communication would be part
- [00:44:13.710]of a train the trainer program.
- [00:44:14.980]Well, it's pretty obvious and asking good questions
- [00:44:18.150]good listening skills and providing effective feedback
- [00:44:21.250]are three of the cornerstones
- [00:44:23.860]of any solid training program or trainer.
- [00:44:27.510]So we talk about how to do all three of those things,
- [00:44:30.550]listening skills, asking good questions.
- [00:44:33.650]And by the way, questions are the trainers primary tool.
- [00:44:39.570]Questions are the trainers primary tool.
- [00:44:41.560]There's no question about that.
- [00:44:43.600]And effective questioning is definitely
- [00:44:45.590]something that we want to instill
- [00:44:48.110]in folks that are doing on the job training.
- [00:44:49.860]And again, providing effective feedback,
- [00:44:52.240]both reinforcing in nature and corrective in nature.
- [00:44:56.900]We're coaching adults.
- [00:44:58.180]We are coaching adults, we're not teaching children.
- [00:45:01.990]There are a very distinctive differences
- [00:45:04.090]between the way adults learn and the way children learn.
- [00:45:08.160]And the most effective trainers have an understanding
- [00:45:11.470]of that and recognize that they are training adults,
- [00:45:13.810]they're not teaching children.
- [00:45:15.240]So we talk about some of how to go about doing that,
- [00:45:18.610]reinforce some of the things associated
- [00:45:20.550]with the journey assessments,
- [00:45:22.940]and actual steps to delivering successful culture.
- [00:45:27.080]So a four step process on how to go about doing it,
- [00:45:31.160]what questions to ask, and providing some feedback.
- [00:45:35.050]This multi-generational workforce, Rick alluded to it.
- [00:45:37.780]I can tell you it is the hottest topic
- [00:45:39.920]going and training today.
- [00:45:41.630]I do a lot of customized training,
- [00:45:43.800]and I can tell you how the last three or four years,
- [00:45:48.360]this multi-generational workforce,
- [00:45:50.020]whether it be train the trainer programs, or leadership,
- [00:45:52.630]or any other program that I developed,
- [00:45:55.310]inevitably people wanna know about this, because it has
- [00:45:58.820]impacted how a training is designed and delivered.
- [00:46:02.230]So we could do 16 hours easily just on that,
- [00:46:06.270]on the multi-generational workforce
- [00:46:08.610]but definitely incorporate some things and share that
- [00:46:12.870]with our coaches and trainers on what that means to them
- [00:46:16.590]in the programs that they are delivering.
- [00:46:20.040]I've got some things in here
- [00:46:21.580]around objectives and preparing a training outline.
- [00:46:25.910]The only reason I've kept this into the program,
- [00:46:28.350]those Jurnee kits do an outstanding job of providing
- [00:46:31.500]all the information you need on every equipment.
- [00:46:33.740]And in particular pieces of equipment.
- [00:46:39.740]This I've left into the program because it can be applied
- [00:46:43.130]to other on the job training, even if it's a simple task.
- [00:46:46.800]So just giving people some things to think about,
- [00:46:49.730]and putting together an outline if need be.
- [00:46:52.120]And depending on circumstances
- [00:46:54.300]we can certainly provide some opportunities
- [00:46:57.700]for some coaching practice and delivery.
- [00:47:01.960]So that's probably more than you ever cared to know about me
- [00:47:08.820]or some of the train the training opportunities.
- [00:47:11.060]I think I'm gonna turn it over
- [00:47:13.330]to Mitch at this point for some followup
- [00:47:16.220]or question or however he would like to proceed.
- [00:47:18.500]Thank you very much for your time folks.
- [00:47:22.100]Thanks Buck. Thanks, Rick.
- [00:47:24.400]That was a really good summary
- [00:47:26.590]of what we have available for Nebraska local agencies.
- [00:47:30.090]So really give it some thought.
- [00:47:33.070]If there are any questions about the products
- [00:47:36.290]that Vista can provide or any questions for Buck
- [00:47:38.960]about the train the trainer support,
- [00:47:41.000]I guess I'd open it up now, if you have any questions.
- [00:47:48.880]And you can also type it in the chat, if you want to,
- [00:47:51.280]if you're more comfortable that way, that's fine.
- [00:47:56.617]This is where you're gonna wanna unmute,
- [00:47:58.919]if you have a question. (laughs)
- [00:48:00.548]Yes, unmute.
- [00:48:01.490]I'll do like I do half the time ramble for 20 minutes.
- [00:48:03.980]Forget that I've got the little red thing
- [00:48:05.380]in my corner there.
- [00:48:09.250]Rick and Buck when I post this information on our website
- [00:48:12.000]would it be okay to post your information, your contact?
- [00:48:16.405]Yes. Absolutely.
- [00:48:19.557]And as Phyllis mentioned earlier, she's gonna be sending
- [00:48:22.450]out the slides that Rick and I used.
- [00:48:24.710]So some of that information you'll have,
- [00:48:26.560]we didn't want you to have to scramble
- [00:48:28.510]and take notes and or if you review that
- [00:48:30.970]and have additional questions, but certainly now
- [00:48:33.680]if anybody's got anything that they're curious about,
- [00:48:35.930]or you'd like some more information about, please feel free.
- [00:48:47.580]I guess for somebody who maybe you're thinking
- [00:48:52.220]would make a good trainer for a local agency,
- [00:48:54.710]I guess I scribbled down some notes here,
- [00:48:58.530]just in my experience.
- [00:48:59.810]I think there are a lot of benefits to that person,
- [00:49:05.080]both personally and as far as their career path.
- [00:49:09.780]I think a lot of employee recognition comes with,
- [00:49:14.100]your boss saying, "hey, we think you're a good operator,
- [00:49:17.370]and you'd make a great trainer and we wanna invest in you.
- [00:49:22.096]We wanna give you these tools,
- [00:49:23.530]and see if you can be an effective trainer."
- [00:49:27.700]So I think there's a lot of benefits to that person.
- [00:49:31.450]Also you could use it as a basis
- [00:49:34.210]for a promotion of some sort
- [00:49:37.920]if that's what your agency decided to do.
- [00:49:40.690]So there's a lot of benefits to that person.
- [00:49:42.820]And I think there's a lot of benefits
- [00:49:44.850]to the organization as well.
- [00:49:47.400]I think of those rain days where
- [00:49:49.920]you don't have so much to do.
- [00:49:53.736]If you had a trainer in your organization
- [00:49:57.350]that'd be a great great time to fit in some training,
- [00:50:00.170]and the LTAP trainers or any external trainers you might get
- [00:50:05.220]you're not gonna be able to schedule them short notice
- [00:50:08.210]like that.
- [00:50:09.043]So that's one big benefit I see to the organization,
- [00:50:13.180]also it could be somebody that's continuously available
- [00:50:17.270]to your people.
- [00:50:19.560]I know that that makes employees a lot more comfortable
- [00:50:22.730]if they have somebody that they know who they can turn to
- [00:50:25.410]to ask questions and to get answers.
- [00:50:29.380]I think also for the organization
- [00:50:33.500]it's a good chance to instill those specific
- [00:50:38.170]local agency policies into the training.
- [00:50:40.890]That's something our LTAP trainers could never do that.
- [00:50:45.070]I felt like, we were teaching things one way, and possibly
- [00:50:50.170]there's a different way that your agency likes to do things.
- [00:50:53.290]So I think getting those local policies out there,
- [00:50:57.880]that would go hand in hand with your trainer.
- [00:51:01.500]There's just lots of benefits to have an LTAP, and Vista,
- [00:51:07.550]and Buck work with somebody in your organization.
- [00:51:10.500]So I want to throw that out there.
- [00:51:15.810]And then yeah anybody have anything to add to that?
- [00:51:21.490]Mitch you have a chat question.
- [00:51:24.410]Oh, great.
- [00:51:29.657]So getting the Vista program,
- [00:51:33.700]how much should a person plan the budget to get involved
- [00:51:36.380]in getting the Vista program?
- [00:51:38.590]So those Vista train the trainer Jurnee kits.
- [00:51:43.860]LTAP is gonna provide those to any local agency
- [00:51:47.730]who wants to get involved.
- [00:51:50.460]And of course, like we said, you'll get the instructor kit,
- [00:51:54.070]all those resources, you'll get support from Vista,
- [00:51:58.270]you'll get support from LTAP.
- [00:52:02.110]We also have some other training resources
- [00:52:04.310]that we can get you, all the previous things
- [00:52:07.760]that LTAP use to use for training.
- [00:52:10.070]I mean, we're gonna do whatever we can
- [00:52:12.600]to make sure you're successful.
- [00:52:14.220]So you just let Phyllis or I know if you wanna do that,
- [00:52:19.970]and we'll get you set up for it.
- [00:52:24.120]Mitch, Steve Darbo here.
- [00:52:25.990]Hey Steve.
- [00:52:27.500]So to get that correct you guys,
- [00:52:30.220]to say if I got one of my operators for the road grader,
- [00:52:34.930]you guys are going to supply him getting trained
- [00:52:37.610]to be able to come back down
- [00:52:38.730]to my department to train my other employees,
- [00:52:41.270]is what you're saying?
- [00:52:43.030]Exactly, you got it.
- [00:52:44.880]And that we're gonna be there the whole way.
- [00:52:47.600]I mean, like Buck was saying monthly
- [00:52:50.440]or quarterly web meetings.
- [00:52:53.170]I mean, we'll get everybody together
- [00:52:54.710]and we'll see how things are going.
- [00:52:55.854]And also we're always there by phone.
- [00:52:59.800]I also have some contract people
- [00:53:01.610]with LTAP that I can send your way to help you get going.
- [00:53:05.820]Because I think you're gonna see,
- [00:53:08.200]when he was talking, I think to get it out
- [00:53:10.650]to some of the other local superintendents,
- [00:53:13.500]if they look at that and watching the cost is what
- [00:53:16.910]would scare a lot of us away,
- [00:53:18.567]but if LTAP is gonna cover a lot of that,
- [00:53:21.830]that that's something that, when I read the original thing
- [00:53:26.120]on your screen it really didn't say on all of that.
- [00:53:29.690]So I wasn't for sure, but that's a big,
- [00:53:31.760]I think that's a big thing there that if we can,
- [00:53:34.510]especially for us with turnover,
- [00:53:36.640]sometimes keeping people trained, that's a big deal,
- [00:53:40.020]but I guess I didn't notice
- [00:53:42.050]or read that prior to you saying that just now.
- [00:53:44.790]So that kind of makes a big difference
- [00:53:47.160]in a person's thought process on how it goes about that.
- [00:53:50.740]'Cause I would love to get somebody trained down here
- [00:53:54.350]to work in my other employees, so yes I'm in.
- [00:53:58.560]Yeah I mean there's thousands of equipment operators
- [00:54:01.490]that work for local agencies.
- [00:54:02.910]It's just in our state and with the constant turnover
- [00:54:06.850]that's a huge battle to make sure they all have training.
- [00:54:10.200]So this is the only way we can do it.
- [00:54:14.460]We have to get trainers out there so...
- [00:54:17.095]That's true so I will,
- [00:54:20.900]I'm going to talk to a few of my guys,
- [00:54:22.250]and I'll be getting in touch with you.
- [00:54:23.853]Great.
- [00:54:25.689]And then I will let you know.
- [00:54:27.740]Thanks Steve. Thanks Mitch.
- [00:54:29.010]Thank you guys.
- [00:54:30.500]Yeah, any more other questions?
- [00:54:33.540]Ray I noticed that you're unmuted did you have a question?
- [00:54:42.950]Maybe not.
- [00:54:47.260]If anybody has questions, feel free to email Phyllis
- [00:54:49.920]or I, I'm excited to work with Vista.
- [00:54:53.840]We had all of our contract people go through Buck's
- [00:54:57.250]16 hour training and it was really good.
- [00:54:59.880]I highly encourage that.
- [00:55:02.530]We don't have it scheduled yet, but
- [00:55:04.090]if you're interested in it definitely get ahold
- [00:55:06.410]of Phyllis and she'll keep a list and.
- [00:55:11.470]Well you know I won't say an outsider looking in,
- [00:55:15.530]but if I were an outsider looking in,
- [00:55:18.380]knowing what I know about this program,
- [00:55:21.610]this is a very high quality training product
- [00:55:24.250]in a very quite frankly solid training program,
- [00:55:27.190]and you can't beat the price for crying out loud.
- [00:55:29.750]So there's very little to lose at least from my perspective.
- [00:55:34.520]Now that's easy for me to say, but again,
- [00:55:37.500]just kind of an objective food for thought there,
- [00:55:41.410]I'd love to work with any of you guys
- [00:55:42.810]that are interested so.
- [00:55:44.450]Yeah I mean, there isn't a cost for sure.
- [00:55:47.840]You're gonna have to free up your trainer
- [00:55:49.520]every once in a while.
- [00:55:50.890]So he wouldn't be out there operating and maintaining roads
- [00:55:53.850]but just to me, the costs are far outweighed
- [00:55:58.090]by the benefits so yeah, that's my sales pitch.
- [00:56:05.092]There was a couple of other chats there, Mitch,
- [00:56:07.010]just so you know.
- [00:56:08.104]Oh yeah.
- [00:56:08.937]They're just saying that they're in,
- [00:56:10.270]so I got them down so I will be contacting you guys.(laughs)
- [00:56:14.660]Oh, there's one,
- [00:56:15.870]on the training videos for equipment,
- [00:56:18.240]can it be done as a group?
- [00:56:19.430]I realized there's a quiz at the end.
- [00:56:21.460]Is there a way to watch it as a group
- [00:56:23.110]yet independently take the quiz?
- [00:56:26.480]Definitely, this is really flexible, right, Rick?
- [00:56:29.670]Yes, to answer that the short answer is yes.
- [00:56:33.540]And there's two options there.
- [00:56:38.310]One is to have each individual log in
- [00:56:41.600]and take the quiz separately after the watching the video.
- [00:56:45.460]Or two is to project it up on the big screen
- [00:56:48.870]and hand out a paper test and do it that way.
- [00:56:54.360]Just let me out for a a thought here
- [00:56:57.240]from a training perspective.
- [00:56:59.920]As it relates to assessment like a quiz,
- [00:57:02.500]I think what we need to ask ourselves
- [00:57:04.140]is what are we trying to accomplish?
- [00:57:06.230]If we are trying to accomplish that this individual
- [00:57:10.210]is certified and knows enough to operate
- [00:57:13.560]the equipment safely, that's one thing
- [00:57:16.470]that that's we probably want a quiz individually.
- [00:57:21.010]However, in the kind of circumstances
- [00:57:23.960]that you're suggesting here,
- [00:57:25.700]testing can be used as a good learning tool as well.
- [00:57:29.670]So there's nothing wrong with showing a video
- [00:57:32.910]and then taking each of those questions
- [00:57:35.720]and having that group discuss
- [00:57:37.660]and answer that question altogether at the same time.
- [00:57:41.853]That's a very effective way for folks to learn.
- [00:57:46.470]We want folks to acquire and retain new skills
- [00:57:49.330]and knowledge, and passing a test to make,
- [00:57:53.810]to certify somebody is one thing.
- [00:57:56.090]But again, it can also be used as a training tool.
- [00:58:01.350]Thanks Buck.
- [00:58:08.960]All right Steve says he likes the group working together.
- [00:58:12.140]I think that's a good idea too.
- [00:58:15.890]All right, everybody, it's been an hour,
- [00:58:17.107]it's been a good one, time flies when you're having fun.
- [00:58:19.861]Wait, wait, wait there's another question.
- [00:58:22.040]Can one County go to another County for training?
- [00:58:25.610]I guess that would be up to the counties, wouldn't it?
- [00:58:27.780]Thanks for bringing that up.
- [00:58:29.270]That's one of the benefits to having this statewide network.
- [00:58:33.390]I mean, say your guys really relate well
- [00:58:37.190]to somebody in another County,
- [00:58:38.680]or just even a stranger coming in and doing some training.
- [00:58:42.890]Maybe your guys would relate better to that.
- [00:58:45.240]I think that's a huge benefit to be able
- [00:58:47.730]to call your next door County,
- [00:58:49.070]and swap trainers or something like that.
- [00:58:52.720]So Juan thanks for that.
- [00:58:54.820]One specialize in motor grader,
- [00:58:56.480]and the other County specialize in excavator,
- [00:58:58.729]or something like that would work too.
- [00:59:01.340]You bet.
- [00:59:03.260]And again, I can't tell you how many times I have seen
- [00:59:06.350]this networking really prove the quality of training.
- [00:59:09.680]Trainer A is talking to the trainer B trainer B says,
- [00:59:13.387]"well I do this and this."
- [00:59:14.680]Trainer A says, "well, I do it this way."
- [00:59:18.147]And trainer B says, you know what,
- [00:59:19.730]that's a really good idea."
- [00:59:21.300]And you can imagine if you have multiple people,
- [00:59:24.380]how that can compound.
- [00:59:26.060]And again, if we do a statewide networking opportunity
- [00:59:32.930]I can certainly interject some design thoughts
- [00:59:36.060]or delivery thoughts as well.
- [00:59:37.690]But learning amongst themselves,
- [00:59:42.525]is gonna be probably even more productive
- [00:59:45.840]than just having me tell them what to do.
- [00:59:49.450]Yup.
- [00:59:53.350]Anybody else?
- [00:59:57.070]Going once, going twice.
- [01:00:00.280]All right, thanks for your time everybody, and.
