- [00:00:01.560]Hello, my name is Enrique Martinez.
- [00:00:04.050]I am assisting Byron Anway in his studio practice.
- [00:00:08.010]I began researching with Anway in the fire program my freshman year,
- [00:00:12.660]and I'm continuing this summer and the following academic year under UCare.
- [00:00:18.150]When I first began assisting professor Anway, I was working all in graphite.
- [00:00:24.180]During this time I learned to work with powder graphite in layers,
- [00:00:28.230]and how Anway builds one of his images based on sketches and underlayers.
- [00:00:34.050]I also got insight as to how Anway's creative process works.
- [00:00:38.940]His pictures are based in experimentations with drawings.
- [00:00:42.810]So now when we move into watercolor and painting and
- [00:00:47.310]printmaking,
- [00:00:48.210]I have Anway's history of image-making to guide newer
- [00:00:52.590]endeavors,
- [00:01:02.690]Professor Anway's
- [00:01:03.770]Research focuses on the excitement and danger of large groups
- [00:01:08.510]using a variety of picture, making materials and techniques.
- [00:01:12.560]This interest came from his time living and working overseas in Europe and
- [00:01:16.760]Africa through drawing, painting, printmaking, and watercolor.
- [00:01:21.890]He combines news photos, memory, architecture,
- [00:01:26.000]and figuration to recreate significant moments of world and personal
- [00:01:30.740]history.
- [00:01:44.300]Over the summer,
- [00:01:45.260]I assisted Byron's paintings bringing the mosaic pattern,
- [00:01:49.730]graphite drawings. I did my first year to watercolor
- [00:02:08.300]then taking his Photoshop sketches of blankets and planes to
- [00:02:13.220]make these somewhat blissful,
- [00:02:15.380]somewhat eerie guash paintings of blankets on paper.
- [00:02:27.530]At first,
- [00:02:28.730]I made a few small scale studies of how I should compose the picture.
- [00:02:41.630]Then I went on to working on a few large pieces of two by three
- [00:02:46.370]feet paper.
- [00:02:48.560]And after that I did a few larger scale studies and
- [00:02:53.330]eventually a four by five foot painting.
- [00:03:14.250]Now I'm printmaking for Anway, at first
- [00:03:17.820]just relief carving on 20 by 20 inch woodblocks.
- [00:03:22.560]And now through Alyssa's wisdom,
- [00:03:25.440]I am learning to print these larger blocks.
- [00:03:27.630]I will
- [00:03:47.160]Continue to carve and print for an way this following summer and academic
- [00:03:52.020]year.
- [00:03:52.950]So I will be revisiting the images more closely related to the drawing
- [00:03:57.720]site began with now in relief.
- [00:04:18.630]I will also incorporate some of my own practice into my future research.
- [00:04:24.030]I'm working with water-soluble graphite and paper collage.
- [00:04:28.620]These works will address cultural identity and expression.
- [00:04:41.880]I would like to thank professor Anway and my fellow and way Ucare
- [00:04:46.380]students. Thank you.
