- [00:00:02.206]Hi there my name is Noah Giron and I am
- [00:00:05.666]here to walk you through my UCARE project
- [00:00:09.666]poster. My Project was as a Studio
- [00:00:13.666]Assistant in typography and graphic design
- [00:00:18.600]as an introduction through the UCARE
- [00:00:21.532]program this past year I worked as a
- [00:00:24.699]Studio Assistant for Professor Byron Anway
- [00:00:28.374]I created a multi-material typeface,
- [00:00:31.198]portfolio website, and laid out the ground
- [00:00:34.501]structure for the archival process of
- [00:00:37.542]catalogued works. Professor Anway's
- [00:00:40.908]research focuses on the excitement and
- [00:00:44.093]danger of large groups using a variety of
- [00:00:47.689]picture making materials and techniques.
- [00:00:51.219]This interest came from his time living
- [00:00:53.505]and working overseas in Europe and Africa.
- [00:00:57.540]Through drawing, painting, digital
- [00:00:59.934]collage, and watercolor he combines news
- [00:01:02.950]photos, memory, architecture, and
- [00:01:06.173]figuration to recreate significant moments
- [00:01:09.550]of world and personal history. Through the
- [00:01:13.362]UCARE program I assisted in realizing
- [00:01:16.136]Professor Anway's imagery using my skills
- [00:01:19.283]in typographic, web, and graphic design.
- [00:01:24.710]Methods Bringing my skills in graphic
- [00:01:28.176]design I learned new ways to apply my
- [00:01:31.065]techniques to Professor Anway's work using
- [00:01:34.135]a list of artists as a touchstone to
- [00:01:37.004]further develop his practice. I used
- [00:01:40.066]mid-century modern travel and brutalist
- [00:01:43.224]typography as a foundation within the
- [00:01:46.477]development of Professor Anway's
- [00:01:49.436]personalized typeface. This was meant as a
- [00:01:53.436]way to create a sense of rawness and
- [00:01:56.073]weighted form within the font. To create a
- [00:01:59.999]clean and minimalist design and file
- [00:02:02.471]structure for Professor Anway's portfolio
- [00:02:06.121]website, I worked in a modular fashion
- [00:02:09.408]that would reinforce the basic file
- [00:02:11.294]structure. My objectives within this
- [00:02:15.885]project is to make design work that
- [00:02:18.840]reinforces the messages within Professor
- [00:02:21.764]Anway's art practice. By creating designed
- [00:02:25.424]elements that strengthen the messaging
- [00:02:28.045]of a spiritual, meditative, or dream like
- [00:02:31.092]state, Professor Anway can use my
- [00:02:34.259]typography as a cohesive element to tie
- [00:02:38.469]in imagery with rhetoric. Now a bit about
- [00:02:42.759]my process. We started off with some
- [00:02:46.267]preparatory sketches for the typography.
- [00:02:50.647]These first two images show sketches done
- [00:02:54.199]on IPad as a way of recreating these
- [00:02:58.049]travel posters from Professor Anway's
- [00:03:01.019]memory. We then went in and sketched out
- [00:03:04.339]a basic layout, asking questions such as:
- [00:03:08.064]should this be serif/sans-serif, if we
- [00:03:10.898]should add in three point perspective,
- [00:03:12.885]where we should put the x-height of the
- [00:03:14.819]font; all of which we had to experiment
- [00:03:17.214]with. I then took these ideas and brought
- [00:03:20.667]them into Illustrator, bringing out shapes
- [00:03:25.667]and form in order to cut out certain
- [00:03:28.851]aspects of each letterform. Creating
- [00:03:31.615]counters as well as bowls and stems that
- [00:03:37.250]would reinforce this imagery of this
- [00:03:40.224]brutalist structure. In order to do that
- [00:03:43.624]we created a stronger lower half of the
- [00:03:46.304]letter, with a smaller and lighter upper
- [00:03:49.100]half to create this weighted form. Finally
- [00:03:53.290]once all the letters were done, we would
- [00:03:56.245]do a mock-up and sus-out any further
- [00:03:59.831]development that would have to happen
- [00:04:01.682]with either the letters, the numbers, or
- [00:04:04.453]the punctuation. Going on from there, we
- [00:04:08.078]started working on the woodcutting
- [00:04:09.868]process, this started with printing out a
- [00:04:13.157]few test letters and comparing it to the
- [00:04:15.908]artwork that it would be displayed with.
- [00:04:19.723]Once we got the size down, I further cut
- [00:04:22.190]out the rest of the letters, and then
- [00:04:26.359]sorted them. Finally, we needed a backing
- [00:04:31.084]for the letter, so that you would create a
- [00:04:33.484]structure when printing to not only help
- [00:04:38.250]with alignment, but the physical weight
- [00:04:40.703]of the press. We went through a process
- [00:04:44.703]of adhering the letter to the backs
- [00:04:49.707]through dry cement processing and wood
- [00:04:54.261]glue. And then this is what the final
- [00:04:58.017]pieces would look like. And then I
- [00:05:02.771]shellaced them in order to get a seal,
- [00:05:05.974]so that when we were printing the
- [00:05:07.996]letters didn't get stained. And finally
- [00:05:13.484]they are meant to be used with the wood
- [00:05:16.634]cuts that Professor Anway created and this
- [00:05:22.372]would be a final print example. So results
- [00:05:30.452]consisted of, for the typeface, this final
- [00:05:34.072]print. And an example thereof. And for the
- [00:05:40.706]portfolio website it is up online and
- [00:05:45.875]chronicles his work, breaking them into
- [00:05:49.664]sections that are further broken down
- [00:05:52.017]by date. And then by subject. You can
- [00:05:57.337]click through these to see the full extent
- [00:06:01.194]of the work. Finally it is polished out
- [00:06:05.584]with a Bio and contact information.
- [00:06:11.301]The future work. The prints Professor
- [00:06:14.901]Anway and I created will be submitted for
- [00:06:17.494]National and International exhibitions,
- [00:06:20.238]proposals, and competitions. I plan to
- [00:06:24.238]continue my research and developing
- [00:06:26.179]my skills in typographic design as I will
- [00:06:29.397]be making my own typeface for use within
- [00:06:31.423]my own work, and as a way to further the
- [00:06:33.995]development within my portfolio as I
- [00:06:37.995]learned from this research experience.
- [00:06:42.000]Thank you for listening!
