- [00:00:03.445]Hello my name is Tyra Carstens
- [00:00:05.603]And I did my Ucare research presentation
- [00:00:09.038]On cone 6 translucent porcelain
- [00:00:14.273]This research project explored the
- [00:00:16.480]creation of a translucent cone 6 porcelain
- [00:00:19.144]Clay body In this experiment I explored
- [00:00:22.095]two different recipes and got different
- [00:00:24.035]results for both.
- [00:00:25.123]This experiment used qualitative and
- [00:00:27.353]quantitative results to show shrinkage
- [00:00:29.531]and translucency.
- [00:00:31.256]I wanted to explore this clay body because
- [00:00:33.711]It is what I would like to use for my work
- [00:00:36.068]in the future, in my future studio
- [00:00:38.098]practice. And I wanted to have a porcelain
- [00:00:40.646]clay body that would be able to have light
- [00:00:44.164]that could show through it.
- [00:00:49.124]My objective in this project was to find a
- [00:00:52.284]translucent clay body that I could use in
- [00:00:54.713]my future studio practice after I
- [00:00:56.737]graduate.
- [00:00:58.404]This project was intended to help me
- [00:01:00.256]explore clay bodies further and figure
- [00:01:02.211]out a clay body that I would like to use
- [00:01:04.777]in my studio practice as an artist.
- [00:01:10.383]In order to test this clay body, I did
- [00:01:12.503]several tests with it. First I made
- [00:01:14.527]shrinkage bars ascertain how much
- [00:01:16.611]the porcelain clay body shrinks when
- [00:01:18.621]fired up to cone six.
- [00:01:20.049]I also tested for translucency by
- [00:01:23.122]making flat tiles that were an
- [00:01:25.372]eighth of the an inch to see if light
- [00:01:27.428]would shine through the clay body.
- [00:01:29.070]Then based on the results, I would go
- [00:01:31.102]back to the drawing board and try
- [00:01:32.749]different recipe. If the previous one had
- [00:01:34.745]failed.
- [00:01:36.023]For the first clay body, I tested a
- [00:01:40.023]recipe that consisted of China clay, ball
- [00:01:42.903]clay, potash, feldspar, nepheline, Syenite
- [00:01:46.253]minspar, and silica in various ratios and
- [00:01:50.361]amounts.
- [00:01:51.815]This clay body, as you can see, when held
- [00:01:54.295]up to the light, has no translucency,
- [00:01:57.476]meaning that you can not see that the
- [00:01:59.860]light showing through the clay body.
- [00:02:03.101]To the right, in the photo, is a shrinkage
- [00:02:05.631]bar that I rolled out and measured it to
- [00:02:10.119]be six and a half inches, one, wet
- [00:02:14.390]before firing it. And then after you
- [00:02:19.504]remeasure it after glaze firing it
- [00:02:22.108]and then calculate the shrinkage based on
- [00:02:25.433]how much it shrank from six and a quarter,
- [00:02:28.515]six and a half inches.
- [00:02:30.081]So the shrinkage amount that I calculated
- [00:02:32.602]for this clay body turned out to be 12%.
- [00:02:34.812]So overall, this recipe was unsuccsseful
- [00:02:39.032]because it did not have the translucency
- [00:02:43.044]that I was looking for.
- [00:02:46.755]For my second clay body recipe, I went
- [00:02:49.735]back to the drawing board and decided to
- [00:02:53.273]try out a different recipe that did not
- [00:02:55.701]any ball clay in it.
- [00:02:58.203]Through my first experiments I had
- [00:03:00.453]discovered that ball clay makes
- [00:03:02.256]porcelain bodies highly opaque and not
- [00:03:06.571]translucent.
- [00:03:08.441]So for the second experiment, I did
- [00:03:10.899]Grolleg china clay, New Zealand halloysite
- [00:03:13.751]Nepheline syenite, silica, veegum-t,
- [00:03:18.186]which plasticizes the clay, and makes it
- [00:03:21.591]easier to work with,
- [00:03:23.334]and molochite, which is a grog.
- [00:03:25.173]Now this clay body shrinks at 16%, and
- [00:03:29.289]below are photos transluceny.
- [00:03:31.648]So, below you can see that this lamp shows
- [00:03:36.626]through this clay body, you can see the
- [00:03:39.292]light coming through and you can even see
- [00:03:41.819]parts of my finger beneath the clay
- [00:03:44.510]because it is that translucent when held
- [00:03:46.628]up to the light.
- [00:03:47.756]Overall, this second clay body was very
- [00:03:50.080]successful. And I hope to do further tests
- [00:03:54.117]on this clay body in the future to figure
- [00:03:57.073]out how best to not get it to shrink as
- [00:04:01.675]much as it does.
- [00:04:04.276]In conclusion, the second clay body that I
- [00:04:06.485]tested ended up turning transluscent at
- [00:04:09.095]cone six. Although the first test was
- [00:04:11.333]unsuccessful, it gave me the knowledge
- [00:04:13.528]that ball should not be used in
- [00:04:15.505]translucent clay bodies.
- [00:04:16.815]I can continue to evaluate the second clay
- [00:04:18.900]body throughout the year and try and come
- [00:04:21.129]up with a recipe that tends to crack less
- [00:04:23.134]than the first recipe.
- [00:04:26.659]The drawback of not having ball clay in
- [00:04:29.827]translucent porcelain is that the
- [00:04:32.527]translucent porcelain tends to crack more
- [00:04:35.345]than a clay body with ball clay in it.
- [00:04:39.409]So, for future experiments with this
- [00:04:43.690]clay body, I hope to figure out how to get
- [00:04:47.688]it to crack the least amount and be the
- [00:04:51.387]easiest to work with in the future.
- [00:04:56.195]Final acknowledgments: I would like to
- [00:04:58.075]thank my professor who helped me with
- [00:05:00.181]this project, Eddie Dominguez, and the
- [00:05:02.028]UCare program for allowing me to conduct
- [00:05:04.390]this research during the during the school
- [00:05:06.531]year.
