- [00:00:01.543]Good Morning, my name is Sam Ortgies
- [00:00:03.355]and I'm going to present on
- [00:00:04.745]the process development of Magnesium
- [00:00:06.520]Alloy WE43 using the Laser Engineered
- [00:00:09.588]Net Shaping system.
- [00:00:16.628]So kind of an overview of what this
- [00:00:18.336]presentation will entail. We are going to
- [00:00:20.509]start with kind of the motivation and why
- [00:00:22.471]specifically this magnesium alloy.
- [00:00:25.055]Followed by the system that was used.
- [00:00:27.068]Then the results that we got from
- [00:00:28.724]the experiment. And ending with the
- [00:00:30.572]Future work and the next steps of this
- [00:00:32.397]research project
- [00:00:34.825]So Why WE43?
- [00:00:36.509]Well WE43 is a magnesium alloy
- [00:00:40.526]There is interest in several different
- [00:00:42.496]industries. One of the most
- [00:00:44.163]The industry with the most interest
- [00:00:46.549]is the medical industry.
- [00:00:48.428]WE43 is the only FDA approved, medical
- [00:00:52.337]grade magnesium alloy.
- [00:00:54.431]It is biodegradable and biocompatible
- [00:00:58.820]Magnesium naturally occurs in the body
- [00:01:01.244]so the research shows that there are not
- [00:01:03.600]many adverse effects by putting this
- [00:01:06.600]alloy into the human body.
- [00:01:09.259]In addition, it has a similar stiffness
- [00:01:11.162]to bone. So, if it was used
- [00:01:12.722]for say a plate for bone fixation,
- [00:01:16.554]It's stiffness is similar to bone.
- [00:01:19.547]So, when that bone is growing back
- [00:01:21.896]and healing, it grows back stronger than
- [00:01:23.929]if a titanium implant were to be used.
- [00:01:28.861]This is what is known as stress sheilding
- [00:01:30.967]is when loads go toward the implant
- [00:01:33.733]rather than the bone.
- [00:01:35.577]So titanium has a higher stiffness than bone
- [00:01:39.060]so that bone grows back weaker than before
- [00:01:42.168]whereas if you used WE43, that bone would
- [00:01:44.992]grow back stronger, in comparison to
- [00:01:48.992]the titanium implant.
- [00:01:50.773]Another industry that is interested in
- [00:01:52.643]this alloy is the oil and gas industry.
