- [00:00:05.730]So welcome to another episode of Stretching Your Strengths in CEHS. I'm Dr.
- [00:00:09.900]Paul Springer, the Associate Dean for Student Success in the college. Today,
- [00:00:14.430]we're going to be exploring one of the academic resources on campus,
- [00:00:17.610]which is the Writing Center.
- [00:00:19.410]And I'm fortunate to be able to talk with Maggie Rieckman,
- [00:00:22.170]who is an undergrad consultant and fellow at the Writing Center.
- [00:00:25.950]Thanks for joining me today, Maggie.
- [00:00:28.257]Thanks for having me, Paul.
- [00:00:29.850]So why don't we get started? Why don't you tell us what is the Writing Center?
- [00:00:34.430]Okay, so the Writing Center is a free resource for students,
- [00:00:37.640]graduate and undergraduate,
- [00:00:38.930]as well as faculty of any discipline and year of study. We are an inclusive,
- [00:00:43.400]safe space, welcoming to anyone and their writing.
- [00:00:46.490]And we are also housed within the English department usually,
- [00:00:48.860]but now we've been online for about a year.
- [00:00:51.363]Okay, so what kind of services are offered to students?
- [00:00:55.220]Let's say I have a paper I need to write,
- [00:00:57.110]or I'm struggling with feedback with writing from a professor.
- [00:01:01.513]So, like I said, for about a year, we've been online right now.
- [00:01:04.400]We have two types of consultations.
- [00:01:06.020]We have 45 minutes live face-to-face consultations,
- [00:01:09.170]which is kind of like this Zooming and talking about writing,
- [00:01:11.480]perhaps sharing a screen on our WC online website.
- [00:01:14.780]And then we also have eTutoring, which are asynchronous.
- [00:01:17.150]And we just offer some comments on your papers, which can be up to five pages.
- [00:01:21.590]And we do outreach and we do Fellows Programs for specific classes.
- [00:01:26.420]And we also do events. And again,
- [00:01:28.910]we have like jobs for students like me because we're hiring right now for
- [00:01:33.620]the next academic year.
- [00:01:35.660]So please reach out if you're interested and love talking about writing.
- [00:01:39.257]That's great.
- [00:01:39.980]It sounds like you have all sorts of resources and ways you can help students.
- [00:01:44.810]So how can they reach out to you?
- [00:01:47.094]So students can reach out and faculty members
- [00:01:49.284]by making an account on WC online,
- [00:01:52.130]and that can be found on a link in our website and you can sign up for those two
- [00:01:56.150]types of consultations I talked about,
- [00:01:57.830]and you can also look for different consultants with specialties and studies
- [00:02:01.850]that might help with your paper.
- [00:02:03.770]And you can also join the consultation when the time comes and upload your papers.
- [00:02:08.540]And then you can also use the small chat feature.
- [00:02:10.880]If you have a question that might not take an entire consultation to answer.
- [00:02:14.870]Okay, great. It sounds like there's multiple ways and
- [00:02:18.530]avenues that students can reach out. So when I was an undergrad,
- [00:02:22.160]I utilized a very similar service for my undergrad. I found it super helpful.
- [00:02:27.410]I'm just curious if you can talk about the impact that you've seen on students,
- [00:02:31.250]maybe their grades and their ability to write after utilizing these
- [00:02:35.580]services.
- [00:02:36.590]So from what I've seen in like my one and a half years of working at the Writing
- [00:02:40.250]Center, so many students come back,
- [00:02:42.560]I have a lot of reoccurring appointments and we also receive a lot of professor
- [00:02:46.970]positive feedback.
- [00:02:48.620]And when I've noticed one-on-one with the students is that they are way more
- [00:02:52.100]active in the writing process and on their first visit, you know,
- [00:02:55.130]as this first semester freshmen,
- [00:02:56.960]they take initiative to better understand assignments and other writings.
- [00:03:00.160]And again,
- [00:03:00.550]they're no longer writing in a vacuum because of talking about their writing
- [00:03:03.730]with a peer and personally, it's even made me a better, more conscious writer.
- [00:03:09.070]And again,
- [00:03:10.210]like just another perspective conversation and engaging with a peer about your
- [00:03:14.470]writing to work on brainstorming, organization and polishing is so
- [00:03:19.240]valuable.
- [00:03:20.280]Oh, that is fantastic. Thank you so much.
- [00:03:22.620]I hope that our students in CEHS will utilize this resource
- [00:03:27.210]and thank you so much, Maggie. I really appreciate it.
- [00:03:30.000]Thank you, Paul.
