- [00:00:00.200]Well, former USDA Under Secretary Greg Ibach
- [00:00:03.310]has joined the university of Nebraska's Institute
- [00:00:05.440]of agriculture and natural resources.
- [00:00:07.430]He joins us now to speak
- [00:00:08.930]on this new role and as always Under Secretary
- [00:00:11.580]thanks for your time here this morning.
- [00:00:13.310]Now you're serving I understand as the institutes
- [00:00:15.783]inaugural Under Secretary in residence,
- [00:00:18.600]what does that entail?
- [00:00:21.380]Well, I think it's a
- [00:00:23.100]they're showing some respect for my last position.
- [00:00:26.220]And so that's flattering, I guess
- [00:00:28.320]but what it really entails is being able to
- [00:00:32.480]bring my past federal experience,
- [00:00:35.860]working with agencies.
- [00:00:37.390]how agencies interact with Congress
- [00:00:39.890]to the university and help them understand how
- [00:00:42.810]we might can increase the university's footprint
- [00:00:46.900]and talk about the great things that the university
- [00:00:49.070]is doing here at the Institute of AG and natural resources.
- [00:00:52.430]So what are some of the main priorities in this new role?
- [00:00:57.000]Well, obviously we have a lot of work going on right now
- [00:01:01.550]in Nebraska that is relevant on a national
- [00:01:04.090]and international scale.
- [00:01:06.400]There is a project that UNL is working on
- [00:01:08.530]on anti-microbial resistance in animals and animal feeds,
- [00:01:14.060]the use of antibiotics in animal feeds
- [00:01:17.020]it's funded nationally.
- [00:01:19.000]And so, you know, we bring an interdisciplinary approach
- [00:01:22.530]the college of medicine, the animal science department
- [00:01:26.340]and many other departments are part of the study
- [00:01:29.930]and we hope to be able to continue there.
- [00:01:33.320]Biotechnology is something I was very interested in at USDA.
- [00:01:37.870]UNL has some great opportunities
- [00:01:40.400]to stretch their scope there as well.
- [00:01:43.140]And then conservation, we know that the new administration
- [00:01:46.480]is going to approach conservation a little bit differently.
- [00:01:49.830]Secretary Vilsack's already announced interest in carbon.
- [00:01:53.580]And so we want to position the university of Nebraska to
- [00:01:57.500]be able to be part of that discussion
- [00:01:59.690]on conservation policy.
- [00:02:02.750]Under Secretary, congratulations on your new role
- [00:02:05.120]but before we wrap things up, of course,
- [00:02:06.890]we as we mentioned earlier
- [00:02:08.260]we're celebrating national agriculture week.
- [00:02:10.820]What is your message to the AG community?
- [00:02:15.290]Well, as a farmer myself I think
- [00:02:17.950]the message to the AG community is continue to
- [00:02:23.110]to be involved with telling your story,
- [00:02:26.350]help your neighbors and friends that aren't involved
- [00:02:29.470]in production agriculture every day,
- [00:02:32.100]understand what you're doing each
- [00:02:33.790]and every day to produce the food for them.
- [00:02:37.700]It's also important to be part
- [00:02:39.160]of organizations that share the good word
- [00:02:42.390]about what agriculture does.
- [00:02:44.960]Coz we have lots of voices that are
- [00:02:46.900]against us in agriculture and to be able to be part
- [00:02:50.810]of being active ourselves and being parts
- [00:02:54.360]of organizations that defend us is very important.
- [00:02:58.070]And Under Secretary one more before he wraps
- [00:02:59.800]since you're no longer in Washington DC,
- [00:03:01.560]you're back in your hometown Husker state
- [00:03:03.960]give us kind of an idea of conditions right now
- [00:03:05.970]especially central back on the ranch.
- [00:03:09.100]So we were very dry on the ranch up until
- [00:03:11.980]about two weeks ago.
- [00:03:13.770]And we've had two big moisture events here
- [00:03:16.570]in Nebraska that have been very good
- [00:03:18.920]for the Eastern side of the state
- [00:03:20.370]as well as the central part of the state
- [00:03:22.120]where our ranch and our farming operation is located.
- [00:03:25.800]The Western side of the state still could use more rain
- [00:03:28.650]and they're behind and they need to catch up
- [00:03:31.270]Well as always thank you very much for taking the time
- [00:03:33.160]to chat with us this morning we appreciate it.
- [00:03:35.120]Under Secretary Greg Ibach with the university of Nebraska
- [00:03:38.010]Lincoln's Institute of AG and natural resources.
