- [00:00:00.130]We're at halftime, the Huskers
- [00:00:01.850]and the Skyhawks of Tennessee Martin.
- [00:00:03.550]And we are so happy to again
- [00:00:05.560]be joined by one of the biggest fans
- [00:00:08.040]of Nebraska women's basketball, Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:10.530]Great to have this opportunity to talk
- [00:00:12.360]with you again as always chancellor in part
- [00:00:15.080]because it means we're still playing basketball
- [00:00:16.940]and every additional chance to compete is welcomed not only
- [00:00:20.490]for the team, but also for the fans, right?
- [00:00:22.943]Yeah. It's all right. Matt.
- [00:00:24.520]And that after that great kind of finish
- [00:00:27.530]to the big 10 tournament last week and the
- [00:00:30.620]the way that our women played Maryland
- [00:00:32.700]then, you know, played a top seed team
- [00:00:35.190]and the way that they did and how they
- [00:00:36.960]showed up in that way.
- [00:00:38.382]And you didn't want the season to end on that, right?
- [00:00:41.790]It was so much momentum there that
- [00:00:43.389]they didn't want to see that happen.
- [00:00:45.430]So to be able to be in the WNIT is great.
- [00:00:47.747]And to be able to be in Tennessee for this game.
- [00:00:51.490]Hopefully finish strong today, you know,
- [00:00:53.850]Husker fans everywhere are cheering them on.
- [00:00:56.690]And for the season, the Brazilians that they have had
- [00:01:00.040]and kind of the way Sam Havi has come
- [00:01:02.280]on in the season and Kate Kane and the whole team.
- [00:01:05.100]And so looking forward to a great finish.
- [00:01:08.650]Well, you know,
- [00:01:09.483]you've talked a lot about competition there
- [00:01:10.960]and speaking of competition, Nebraska researchers
- [00:01:14.190]have been part of a global competition, but to come up
- [00:01:17.190]with strategies to overcome the pandemic
- [00:01:20.490]how have the Husker researchers done?
- [00:01:24.750]Well, Matt, you know, the, there was
- [00:01:27.290]we were very pleased that a group of our researchers
- [00:01:30.527]across the university system actually
- [00:01:33.950]teamed up from three of our
- [00:01:35.670]university of Nebraska institutions.
- [00:01:38.040]And what was known as the Pandemic Response Challenge.
- [00:01:42.386]This was a program that was
- [00:01:44.710]run by the X prize system.
- [00:01:47.956]It was kind of open call for teams to come together
- [00:01:53.100]and propose a response to the pandemic.
- [00:01:56.998]There are over 500 teams around the world that were part
- [00:02:01.140]of this Pandemic Response Challenge program.
- [00:02:04.660]And this team from Nebraska ended up finishing
- [00:02:08.370]among the top 10 teams in the world, out of those 500.
- [00:02:12.988]Where they were trying to develop a model driven
- [00:02:17.280]by artificial intelligence to help advise policy makers
- [00:02:20.770]on how to best handle and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:02:25.817]Fadi Alsaleem, who is an assistant professor
- [00:02:29.540]of architectural engineering in our Durham school
- [00:02:33.170]in Omaha is an expert in big data analysis.
- [00:02:37.800]I put this team together nearly a year
- [00:02:39.946]ago to help initially to help predict outbreaks in Nebraska.
- [00:02:44.710]So think back to the very beginning
- [00:02:47.300]of COVID-19, over a year ago, kind of put this team together
- [00:02:52.740]then to kind of help predict outbreaks in our state
- [00:02:56.640]and then put together the team with, as I said, colleagues
- [00:03:00.990]from UNK and from UNMC with all of the grad students
- [00:03:06.100]that they were working with being UNL grad students in our
- [00:03:09.180]our architectural engineering program.
- [00:03:11.840]So that was the original project starting point.
- [00:03:15.396]The teams were asked to analyze local COVID-19 data
- [00:03:21.630]to look at strategies and the policies and to develop
- [00:03:24.450]and to test their models that would anticipate
- [00:03:27.720]what the outcome was going to look like.
- [00:03:29.810]So what the infection rates would look like
- [00:03:32.260]what the play out of spikes and infection might be.
- [00:03:36.800]So we were really, really happy that, you know
- [00:03:39.470]they went through this X prize process.
- [00:03:41.780]They were named one of the top 10 teams in the world,
- [00:03:44.490]which is quite an accomplishment, against that level
- [00:03:47.980]of competition and just very, very proud of them.
- [00:03:51.010]Well, we're very proud of them too, Chancellor
- [00:03:53.870]It is great to talk with you always in March.
- [00:03:57.040]You're always very supportive of everything.
- [00:03:58.491]And thank you for your time today.
- [00:04:00.660]Well, go Big Red looking for a great second half ahead
- [00:04:04.140]and call your spill and, and, and
- [00:04:05.921]what lies ahead for a winner.
- [00:04:08.170]All right. Very good.
- [00:04:09.003]That chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:10.060]I'm Matt Coatney.
- [00:04:11.060]More half-time in a little bit.
