- [00:00:04.990]At the time when I decided to come back to school
- [00:00:06.560]I was managing a group of engineers,
- [00:00:08.620]and I had realized
- [00:00:09.480]that my technical expertise was very sharp
- [00:00:11.700]but my business acumen maybe not as much,
- [00:00:14.080]and so I decided I needed to come back to school
- [00:00:15.900]to learn some more soft skills.
- [00:00:17.640]My name's Matt Walker.
- [00:00:18.810]Graduated from the MEM program,
- [00:00:20.430]the Master's of Engineering Management, in December of 2018.
- [00:00:23.200]Currently I'm a EPC project coordinator
- [00:00:25.410]for Zachry Industrial.
- [00:00:26.820]I help to plan from the early onset
- [00:00:29.520]through final construction engineering procurement
- [00:00:32.450]and construction projects of a mega-nature,
- [00:00:35.340]billions of dollars.
- [00:00:36.173]The program itself allowed me to expand on certain areas.
- [00:00:39.250]They have classes that are tailored
- [00:00:42.400]to specific topics of interest,
- [00:00:44.050]so for me, one of those was project management.
- [00:00:46.950]So it was more tailored specifically to an engineer
- [00:00:50.170]who wanted to be successful in business
- [00:00:51.720]beyond just design work, as opposed to an MBA,
- [00:00:54.710]which would've made me very strong in business,
- [00:00:57.080]but it wouldn't have been applied
- [00:00:58.650]to the particular type of work that I do.
- [00:01:00.340]Since I've graduated, I was promoted almost right away
- [00:01:03.800]when I got my degree.
- [00:01:04.950]They did recognize the value
- [00:01:05.970]that it brought into their business,
- [00:01:08.220]and so they promoted me thereafter
- [00:01:09.780]and then I switched to the construction side
- [00:01:11.580]of our business.
- [00:01:12.413]I've been very successful there
- [00:01:13.440]and kinda seems like the sky's the limit
- [00:01:15.600]moving towards project executive.
- [00:01:17.290]If you've thought about the fact
- [00:01:19.550]that you're good at your job as an engineer
- [00:01:21.570]but you'd like to be more
- [00:01:22.720]into the corporate side of the business
- [00:01:24.770]and work more with things like risk management
- [00:01:27.470]or project management or finance and accounting,
- [00:01:30.960]any of those types of things
- [00:01:32.020]that you'd like to know more about
- [00:01:33.360]that you didn't necessarily get
- [00:01:34.510]as a part of your undergraduate degree,
- [00:01:36.420]I would encourage them
- [00:01:37.290]to seriously consider the MEM program.
- [00:01:39.090]It's a great program.
- [00:01:39.923]It's taught me a lot and it's helped me to be successful.
- [00:01:41.964](upbeat music)
