- [00:00:05.730]interested in learning more about the certified health education specialist
- [00:00:09.330]credential.
- [00:00:10.560]This presentation contains a mixture of slides that are publicly available on
- [00:00:14.370]the NCHEC website with a few of my own thrown in,
- [00:00:17.490]I am Megan Kelley, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and
- [00:00:20.850]Health Sciences at UNL.
- [00:00:22.680]And I've been a certified health education specialist for 10 years.
- [00:00:28.130]Let's get started with
- [00:00:28.880]a quick look at the credentialing organization,
- [00:00:31.580]the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing,
- [00:00:34.220]or NCHEC. NCHEC's vision is to promote,
- [00:00:37.340]improve and protect the health of people through upholding the highest quality
- [00:00:40.940]standards in health education certification.
- [00:00:44.210]NCHEC recently celebrated its 30th anniversary of excellence in
- [00:00:48.620]certification.
- [00:00:52.040]The mission of.
- [00:00:52.310]NCHEC is to enhance the professional practice of health education by
- [00:00:56.090]promoting and sustaining a credentialed
- [00:00:57.770]body of health education specialists. To meet this mission
- [00:01:01.250]they certify health education specialists,
- [00:01:03.830]promote professional development and strengthen professional preparation and
- [00:01:07.370]practice. Their charge is to develop and administer a national competency based
- [00:01:12.050]examination,
- [00:01:13.250]develop standards for professional preparation, and promote professional
- [00:01:17.030]development through continuing education for health education professionals.
- [00:01:23.630]So, why consider becoming a certified health education specialist? With our healthcare
- [00:01:27.830]environment focusing ever more on prevention,
- [00:01:30.170]the role of the health education specialist is critical, and has experienced
- [00:01:33.980]steady growth each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
- [00:01:37.850]this field is projected to have faster than average job growth in the next
- [00:01:41.270]decade with an 11% increase in job openings. NCHEC is also seeing an
- [00:01:46.160]increased interest in certification between 2007 and 2017.
- [00:01:51.170]The average number of CHES and MCHES certificates has increased by 10% each
- [00:01:55.820]year and has reached over 15,000 certified individuals as of 2019,
- [00:02:00.710]practicing across the US, Puerto Rico, and varying locations internationally.
- [00:02:06.230]NCHEC offers the only nationally and internationally accredited
- [00:02:09.710]certification programs for academically trained individuals interested in the
- [00:02:14.000]ever-growing profession of health education.
- [00:02:19.180]A certified health education specialist is an individual that has met academic
- [00:02:23.870]eligibility requirements,
- [00:02:25.730]passed a written examination, has an ongoing commitment to continuing
- [00:02:30.020]education and professional development.
- [00:02:32.960]An MCHES certification is an advanced health education credential for
- [00:02:36.920]individuals who have either completed a master's degree or who have had an
- [00:02:40.730]active CHES certification for the past five years.
- [00:02:46.190]CHES and MCHES exhibit a wide variety of skillsets and provide valuable
- [00:02:50.660]experience in the areas of needs assessment, program planning, and evaluation,
- [00:02:55.940]and providing resources and effective communication strategies for individuals,
- [00:03:00.400]families, and entire communities. They advocate for the welfare of others,
- [00:03:04.900]influence health policy and improve the overall health of the public and the
- [00:03:09.070]communities they serve.
- [00:03:12.730]There are many benefits to earning the CHES and MCHES credentials for the
- [00:03:15.880]professional, the public and the industry as a whole.
- [00:03:19.300]The results of a 2019 survey of credential holders conducted by NCHEC
- [00:03:24.190]show that holding the CHES or MCHES credential enhances professional credibility,
- [00:03:29.050]provides a sense of personal and professional accomplishment, receives
- [00:03:32.980]recognition from peers and employers, and expands professional opportunity.
- [00:03:39.520]CHES
- [00:03:40.000]And MCHES certified individuals practice within varied settings across the country
- [00:03:44.920]and overseas.
- [00:03:46.540]Their verified skill sets are a valuable asset in many different sectors within
- [00:03:50.620]the health and wellness space. As you can see represented in this slide.
- [00:03:58.380]Knowledge and skills certified through the CHES credential translate across
- [00:04:01.860]many professional fields and occupational roles.
- [00:04:05.100]This list of CHES-related job titles is not exhaustive,
- [00:04:08.460]but it does show the diversity of positions for which CHES can be a valuable
- [00:04:12.060]asset from diet counselor to events coordinator to health journalist,
- [00:04:16.830]to lactation consultant, to work site wellness manager, and beyond.
- [00:04:24.750]This quote shows one employer's perspective on the benefits of hiring
- [00:04:28.140]individuals who have earned the CHES credential. At the website listed below
- [00:04:32.730]nchec.org/career-resources
- [00:04:35.460]You can find a growing list of employers who prefer or require CHES
- [00:04:39.000]certification as a condition of hiring.
- [00:04:45.210]The CHES certification was developed by and for the health education profession
- [00:04:49.620]to demonstrate the mastery of a set of fundamental skillsets across all practice
- [00:04:54.480]settings.
- [00:04:55.680]It is a voluntary certification and is not yet required to practice. Certified
- [00:05:00.630]health education specialists are those who have met the standards of competence
- [00:05:04.860]established by NCHEC.
- [00:05:09.090]This slide shows the seven areas of responsibility that are the current basis of
- [00:05:13.020]the CHES and MCHES certifications.
- [00:05:15.720]The current areas of responsibility are to assess needs resources and capacity
- [00:05:20.670]for health education and or promotion; to plan health education
- [00:05:24.930]and promotion; to implement health education / promotion;
- [00:05:28.740]to conduct evaluation and research related to health education / promotion;
- [00:05:33.270]to administer and manage health education
- [00:05:35.520]and promotion; to serve as a resource person; and to communicate, promote,
- [00:05:40.320]and advocate for health, health education and promotion,
- [00:05:43.650]and for the profession. As you look through those areas of responsibility,
- [00:05:47.940]you should see some themes that are reflected in the community health and
- [00:05:51.420]wellness program within our department.
- [00:05:56.900]Eligibility for the CHES
- [00:05:58.130]exam is based exclusively on academic qualifications.
- [00:06:02.480]An individual must have a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree from an
- [00:06:06.290]accredited institution, and either one of the following:
- [00:06:10.700]an official transcript that shows a major in health education, public health
- [00:06:14.420]education, community health education, school health education,
- [00:06:18.110]or an official transcript that reflects 25 semester hours or
- [00:06:22.850]37 quarter hours of earned coursework addressing the seven areas of
- [00:06:26.930]responsibility.
- [00:06:31.060]I've listed some of the courses in the Nutrition and Health Sciences
- [00:06:34.180]department that are directly related to at least one of the CHES areas of
- [00:06:38.050]responsibility.
- [00:06:43.390]Now
- [00:06:43.690]let's talk about the CHES exam.
- [00:06:45.670]The CHES exam is a computer-based test consisting of 165 multiple
- [00:06:50.530]choice questions of which 150 are scored
- [00:06:54.070]and 15 are pilot tested that measure the possession, application, and
- [00:06:58.180]interpretation of knowledge essential to the practice of health education.
- [00:07:02.800]The exam is offered at Prometric test centers with stringent social distancing
- [00:07:07.180]measures in place.
- [00:07:08.830]The Prometric test center in Lincoln is located near 40th and Old Cheney.
- [00:07:13.180]The exam is also currently offered through live remote proctoring and a
- [00:07:17.950]study companion workbook is available on the NCHEC website to assist in preparing
- [00:07:22.480]for the exam.
- [00:07:25.840]Due to
- [00:07:26.500]the circumstances and testing difficulties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic
- [00:07:31.120]NCHEC has received temporary permission to make available live remote
- [00:07:35.140]proctoring as a testing option. Live remote proctoring through their remote
- [00:07:39.460]assessment platform known as ProProctor gives candidates 24 / 7
- [00:07:44.050]access allowing them to test from home with an internet enabled
- [00:07:47.830]location, where they must provide a computer with a camera, a microphone,
- [00:07:52.090]and an internet connection.
- [00:07:57.400]This table outlines the areas of responsibility on the examination and the percent of exam
- [00:08:01.960]questions that come from each area.
- [00:08:04.570]The exam content currently covers the areas of responsibility defined in the
- [00:08:09.250]Health Education Specialist
- [00:08:10.810]Practice Analysis, or HESPA, that was conducted in 2015.
- [00:08:15.670]Another HESPA was conducted in 2020. And as a result,
- [00:08:19.240]the CHES exams will be updated to include the additional competencies of
- [00:08:23.470]Communication and Advocacy beginning in 2022.
- [00:08:30.880]Exam registration opens in May and November of every year.
- [00:08:34.570]People who register during the early bird period receive a $50 discount and
- [00:08:38.980]student discounts for full-time students only are available with documentation
- [00:08:42.940]of full-time status.
- [00:08:44.590]The final exam registration period closes on February 28th and August 31st.
- [00:08:51.910]To maintain the
- [00:08:52.660]CHES or MCHES credential, individuals must pass the written examination,
- [00:08:57.300]pay an annual renewal fee of $60, and document 75 hours of
- [00:09:01.890]continuing education within a five-year period,
- [00:09:04.980]which averages out to 15 hours a year.
- [00:09:08.160]Individuals recertify in five-year cycles. If the above criteria has been met,
- [00:09:13.290]CHES will need to complete a measurement or evaluation of continuing competency
- [00:09:17.430]as a part of their continuing education requirement.
- [00:09:22.290]There are many continuing education opportunities available to get those
- [00:09:25.740]required 75 hours in a five-year cycle,
- [00:09:28.830]as well as to fulfill the continuing competency requirement during the same
- [00:09:32.130]period. Some of the opportunities include professional conferences, seminars,
- [00:09:37.050]and workshops, self study, and online courses.
- [00:09:40.410]Several professional organizations offer self study opportunities within their
- [00:09:44.550]publications.
- [00:09:46.080]Continuing education opportunities are announced on the NCHEC website and
- [00:09:50.130]also via direct mail if you're part of their mailing list.
- [00:09:56.630]CECH
- [00:09:57.470]stands for continuing education contact hours,
- [00:10:00.830]which is one component of maintaining certification.
- [00:10:03.920]There are three types of CECH for ongoing CHES certification.
- [00:10:07.760]The first category, Category
- [00:10:09.140]One, consists of pre pre-approved events offered by designated providers,
- [00:10:14.270]which report all of their activities directly to NCHEC. Individuals may earn
- [00:10:18.890]all of their CECH by participating in Category One activities,
- [00:10:22.010]but they don't have to. Category One contact hours can be earned through such
- [00:10:26.000]activities as attending conferences,
- [00:10:28.850]participating in webinars or other pre-approved educational activities.
- [00:10:34.190]Category Two credit hours refers to continuing education
- [00:10:38.240]that is not pre-approved. An individual may earn Category Two credit hours by
- [00:10:42.530]participating in activities that relate to at least one of the seven areas of
- [00:10:46.280]responsibility, but that were not approved and advanced by NCHEC.
- [00:10:51.140]These could include delivery of health education,
- [00:10:53.990]contribution to development of health policy,
- [00:10:56.660]or many other professional activities that you may complete in the course of
- [00:10:59.900]your future work.
- [00:11:02.630]Continuing competency is the final type of continuing education.
- [00:11:07.640]It requires a demonstration of continuing competency
- [00:11:11.120]during a five-year recertification.
- [00:11:15.380]NCHEC has a growing online community of CHES and MCHES students and other
- [00:11:20.210]health professionals on their various social platforms.
- [00:11:23.450]You can follow them for news, discussion groups, exam information,
- [00:11:26.840]and continuing education opportunities, interviews, and more.
- [00:11:34.640]I encourage you to take a look at these websites and resources that provide
- [00:11:38.660]additional helpful information about the health education specialist profession,
- [00:11:42.830]the CHES credential, and the CHES exam. Thank you so much for watching.
