- [00:00:04.300]The Agricultural Leadership, Education & Communication
- [00:00:07.430]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:09.310]is committed to educating
- [00:00:10.720]and preparing extraordinary leaders,
- [00:00:12.830]teachers and communicators.
- [00:00:14.580]If you're interested in working with people
- [00:00:16.410]and you're passionate about agriculture,
- [00:00:18.450]you may want to consider a career
- [00:00:20.010]in one of our program areas.
- [00:00:21.760]We offer majors in agricultural education,
- [00:00:24.350]skilled and technical sciences teaching,
- [00:00:26.450]agricultural leadership and agricultural
- [00:00:29.550]and environmental sciences and communication.
- [00:00:32.040]Let's meet some of our students
- [00:00:33.230]who are owning their experience on campus
- [00:00:35.240]who have found a place to flourish
- [00:00:36.670]in the ALEC Department.
- [00:00:38.451]My name is Clayton Thomas.
- [00:00:39.710]I am a sophomore here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:42.460]and I am an agriculture education major.
- [00:00:45.150]My name is Malina Lindstrom
- [00:00:46.640]and I am a junior here at UNL studying animal science
- [00:00:49.730]and agricultural communications as a double major.
- [00:00:52.730]I am Amanda Most
- [00:00:53.910]and I'm a junior studying agricultural education
- [00:00:57.030]with the leadership option.
- [00:00:58.714](upbeat music)
- [00:01:03.020]I chose to study agriculture education
- [00:01:04.770]because of the passion that I had for helping students.
- [00:01:07.850]When I was in high school
- [00:01:09.140]I didn't really know what I wanted to do
- [00:01:11.510]but agriculture education at my school
- [00:01:13.590]exposed me to so many different opportunities
- [00:01:15.730]and I saw how much my teachers cared about me
- [00:01:17.810]and so I wanna do that for future students.
- [00:01:20.340]I grew up on a cow-calf operation
- [00:01:22.560]in South Central Nebraska.
- [00:01:23.640]So animal science was a pretty logical choice for me,
- [00:01:26.000]but I also had had a love for marketing and advocacy
- [00:01:28.810]since I was really little
- [00:01:30.330]and had been involved in showing cattle.
- [00:01:32.350]So I thought the Ag Communications degree
- [00:01:34.030]was a perfect fit for me
- [00:01:35.500]to combine a lot of those marketing skills
- [00:01:37.300]with photography and videography,
- [00:01:38.920]but also have so many of those courses
- [00:01:40.650]that are really targeted at advocacy
- [00:01:42.660]and how we can share our story.
- [00:01:44.400]I chose to study leadership because I finally figured out
- [00:01:47.700]that my passion within the agricultural industry
- [00:01:50.720]lies with the people and the leadership major
- [00:01:53.710]gives me the opportunity to study
- [00:01:55.780]and learn how to work with people better
- [00:01:57.670]and more effectively lead teams.
- [00:01:59.450](upbeat music)
- [00:02:03.780]One experience or learning opportunity that I had
- [00:02:06.220]was to go out into schools my freshman year in ALEC 135
- [00:02:10.280]and truly be in the teacher role.
- [00:02:12.670]This was the first time I was able to switch over my brain
- [00:02:16.410]from the student role into the teacher role.
- [00:02:18.460]And I was able to work with students one-on-one,
- [00:02:20.680]teach different lessons and truly see
- [00:02:23.520]that this was the place for me to be
- [00:02:25.380]and agriculture education is what I wanted to do.
- [00:02:27.730]One opportunity that I've taken advantage of this year
- [00:02:30.240]is the Yeutter Institute.
- [00:02:31.550]So that's an honor of Clayton Yeutter.
- [00:02:33.630]And I'm currently involved with that fellowship.
- [00:02:35.980]And we are taking a deep dive into trade policy
- [00:02:38.520]and really seeing how that impacts consumers
- [00:02:41.980]and producers all across the country.
- [00:02:44.300]So I've really focused on the beef industry specifically
- [00:02:47.440]and looked into how the current trade deals that we are in
- [00:02:50.900]are impacting our imports and exports.
- [00:02:53.030]And I'm really excited to continue that
- [00:02:54.770]and finish that up this semester.
- [00:02:56.420]And to go along with that,
- [00:02:58.030]I also am excited for my Ag Communications internship
- [00:03:01.320]to be interning
- [00:03:02.153]with the United States Meat Export Federation.
- [00:03:04.260]So I will be based out of Denver this summer,
- [00:03:06.510]and again, working with some trade policy
- [00:03:08.700]and things like that,
- [00:03:09.533]they work a lot with import and exports of red meat.
- [00:03:12.180]So, very excited to see the global marketplace
- [00:03:14.630]and how they work with that.
- [00:03:16.120]One of the most experiential learning opportunities
- [00:03:18.530]I've had was my summer internship last summer.
- [00:03:21.750]And I was a community fellow
- [00:03:23.760]with the Rural Futures Institute,
- [00:03:25.730]living and working in the community of Wahoo.
- [00:03:27.970]And it really gave me a chance
- [00:03:29.330]to put all of the things that I've learned
- [00:03:30.870]in my leadership classes to use
- [00:03:32.650]as I worked with local community leaders
- [00:03:34.900]and community residents on improving their community
- [00:03:38.510]and really getting them a plan to better their future.
- [00:03:42.359](upbeat music)
- [00:03:46.560]My favorite thing about the ALEC Department
- [00:03:48.130]is the culture of the staff and faculty there
- [00:03:51.090]as well as the other students.
- [00:03:52.150]Everyone is just there to help each other out
- [00:03:54.950]and they truly care
- [00:03:56.350]and want to make sure that you're successful
- [00:03:57.970]in your future career.
- [00:03:59.290]I think the ALEC Department is very unique
- [00:04:01.390]in their community and family feel.
- [00:04:03.350]Every time you walk into a classroom, there's familiar faces
- [00:04:06.030]and it's very comforting as you do that.
- [00:04:07.500]And it's also such small class sizes
- [00:04:10.050]which I think is what allows that.
- [00:04:12.010]But being a double major
- [00:04:13.030]with a science degree on the other side,
- [00:04:15.520]it's a completely different feel.
- [00:04:16.800]And I've really enjoyed that
- [00:04:17.810]because it's a lot of project-based learning
- [00:04:19.960]completely different than my exams and science stuff
- [00:04:22.640]in my animal science degree.
- [00:04:24.160]So I've really enjoyed
- [00:04:25.210]just having that completely different thing.
- [00:04:26.950]They don't layover the best in some departments,
- [00:04:28.960]but it has been really enjoyable
- [00:04:30.730]to just do a lot more projects
- [00:04:32.420]and focus on that side of things.
- [00:04:34.520]My favorite thing about the ALEC Department
- [00:04:36.250]is how close-knit it is.
- [00:04:37.680]I know that any advisor, any professor or any student
- [00:04:41.540]is willing to help another person out.
- [00:04:43.750]And even if I go to someone with a question
- [00:04:46.270]that they might not know the answer to
- [00:04:47.610]they get me the connection I need.
- [00:04:49.240]So I know that I can rely on those people
- [00:04:51.410]and just the relationships that we've built
- [00:04:53.110]because it is a smaller program has been really beneficial.
- [00:04:55.970](upbeat music)
- [00:05:00.320]One of my future career goals
- [00:05:01.740]is to start my own Ag program within Lincoln.
- [00:05:04.490]I feel that it's important to have urban agriculture
- [00:05:06.840]and that's where I kind of grew up,
- [00:05:08.410]and I was exposed to agriculture through 4‑H
- [00:05:10.600]but not every kid has that opportunity
- [00:05:12.280]and I feel Lincoln is such a diverse area
- [00:05:14.670]that needs that agriculture.
- [00:05:15.860]And there's so many Ag companies based in Lincoln.
- [00:05:18.350]And so it's my goal to help expose students within Lincoln
- [00:05:21.790]to the agriculture education field.
- [00:05:24.010]I do wanna go back
- [00:05:24.900]and take over the cow side of our family's operation
- [00:05:27.530]and really focus on the seedstock side.
- [00:05:29.710]But what kind of triggers with my Ag Communications degree
- [00:05:32.660]is I'd love to start a livestock marketing service
- [00:05:34.920]and really personalized marketing strategies
- [00:05:37.240]for livestock producers, photography, videography,
- [00:05:39.870]design sale catalogs.
- [00:05:41.400]And if that doesn't work out,
- [00:05:43.090]I will be for sure working with the Marketing Department.
- [00:05:45.870]In the beef industry specifically,
- [00:05:48.700]I love Junior Activities and National Breed Association.
- [00:05:51.400]So we'll see where that goes,
- [00:05:52.810]but definitely I've found my home
- [00:05:54.340]in communications and marketing
- [00:05:55.690]and we'll be pursuing that in the future.
- [00:05:57.930]My future career goals
- [00:05:59.150]are to either be involved in the human relations sector
- [00:06:02.100]of some sort of Ag business or Ag company,
- [00:06:04.890]or to go into rural development
- [00:06:06.540]in a small rural community here in Nebraska.
- [00:06:09.090]These students have provided just a few examples
- [00:06:11.320]of how the ALEC Department fosters a supportive community
- [00:06:14.080]to co-create your future.
- [00:06:15.850]We believe in the power of every person
- [00:06:18.210]and the ALEC Department could be your next step
- [00:06:20.210]to make an impact on the world.
- [00:06:21.750]If you want to learn more about our academic programs,
