- [00:00:00.250]Welcome back. It's halftime here.
- [00:00:01.570]The Huskers match up today with Northwestern.
- [00:00:03.230]This is Greg Sharpe at our Husker Sports Network Studios
- [00:00:05.559]and delighted to be joined now by the Chancellor
- [00:00:07.900]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:10.030]And Chancellor, our last regular season game of the year
- [00:00:13.160]and the Big 10 Tournament gets going here
- [00:00:15.090]in a couple days.
- [00:00:16.410]I guess it's just been a year
- [00:00:17.530]of just trying to get these games in, hasn't it?
- [00:00:21.010]Well, nobody knows that better than us, Greg.
- [00:00:23.577]The way that this season's played out and the big pause
- [00:00:27.564]that our team had to take earlier in the season
- [00:00:31.810]and then the catch-up
- [00:00:33.640]that's been these last number of weeks.
- [00:00:36.925]Coach Hoiberg has talked
- [00:00:38.717]about having the value of every game.
- [00:00:41.150]I know he knows the value of every game.
- [00:00:43.160]He talked about the chance
- [00:00:44.910]to get young players extended playing time
- [00:00:47.270]on the floor this year
- [00:00:48.690]and the dividends that we hope
- [00:00:49.995]that will pay in the future for them and for the team,
- [00:00:54.715]but they've had a tough schedule the last several weeks,
- [00:00:58.770]getting all these make-up games and plays up.
- [00:01:02.500]Our team's played more in a short period of time,
- [00:01:05.330]they should be tournament-ready
- [00:01:06.507]and thinking about it that way.
- [00:01:09.450]So many teams in the Big 10 playing
- [00:01:11.273]at a high level this year
- [00:01:13.390]and just pleased that our players have been able to play
- [00:01:17.483]and been able to get these games in
- [00:01:20.000]and looking forward to this game today.
- [00:01:23.720]Chancellor, we all know how important water is
- [00:01:26.250]to this state
- [00:01:27.083]and the university is such a leader
- [00:01:28.530]in research in water for ag.
- [00:01:30.490]Now you're leading a new research study
- [00:01:32.790]with implications for waterways across the country.
- [00:01:35.570]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:01:39.100]Well, Greg, one of the hallmarks
- [00:01:41.330]of the University of Nebraska is we've been
- [00:01:43.294]one of the leaders in the world in water research
- [00:01:46.690]for a long time, that water is so incredibly important,
- [00:01:50.963]but especially important in Nebraska,
- [00:01:53.725]as we know and where we live and where we are.
- [00:01:58.820]All living things require specific amounts of elements,
- [00:02:03.050]think of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus
- [00:02:05.560]to survive and to thrive,
- [00:02:07.210]and if any one of those is too high or too low
- [00:02:10.790]or out of whack with one another,
- [00:02:12.830]if they're out of relation to one another,
- [00:02:15.670]that can have crucial impacts on water quality,
- [00:02:19.730]biodiversity in the environment, evolution.
- [00:02:22.923]And just recently, a team of our scientists
- [00:02:28.500]across a number of departments,
- [00:02:30.320]both in the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:02:32.610]and in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts
- [00:02:36.840]were notified that they've received
- [00:02:39.030]a $6 million multi-institutional grant project
- [00:02:43.230]funded by the National Science Foundation.
- [00:02:46.130]Those scientists are Jessica Corman
- [00:02:48.040]in our School of Natural Resources,
- [00:02:49.710]she's the leader of this project in this area,
- [00:02:53.500]Steve Thomas also in the School of Natural Resources,
- [00:02:56.590]Jennifer Clark in our Food Science and Technology department
- [00:03:00.330]and Katie Anania from our School of Art,
- [00:03:03.150]Art History and Design at Hixson-Lied College.
- [00:03:06.110]And this project's going to seek to build a database
- [00:03:09.950]that will enable our scientists
- [00:03:11.660]to track the changing ecology of waterways across the U.S.
- [00:03:16.510]Biggest project of its kind,
- [00:03:18.510]so it's an exciting approach to be able to do this
- [00:03:22.380]on a regional basis, as well as a national basis,
- [00:03:27.100]bringing together researchers
- [00:03:28.710]across various backgrounds and disciplines,
- [00:03:31.740]and be able to represent data in multiple dimensions here
- [00:03:36.040]that will be collected.
- [00:03:38.760]And it's hard to visualize data like that,
- [00:03:42.800]where you have more than two variables.
- [00:03:46.127]Think, for example, like I said earlier,
- [00:03:48.580]your carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus
- [00:03:50.790]in relation to one another in these environments.
- [00:03:54.350]So exciting research, exciting news for this team
- [00:03:57.540]to receive this very large grant
- [00:03:59.400]from the National Science Foundation
- [00:04:01.620]to be leaders in this area,
- [00:04:03.930]again, as we have been for a long time here
- [00:04:07.350]at the University of Nebraska in leading in water research.
- [00:04:11.649]Very, very exciting stuff, and you're right.
- [00:04:13.068]We certainly have been a worldwide leader in this.
- [00:04:15.360]Chancellor, thank you so much for that update.
- [00:04:17.160]Enjoy the rest of the game today.
- [00:04:19.980]Well, looking forward to a great rest of the game
- [00:04:22.097]and to the tournament coming up.
- [00:04:24.090]Go Big Red.
- [00:04:25.570]Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:04:27.100]We've got more halftime festivities coming up next.
