- [00:00:00.206](upbeat music)
- [00:00:03.900]Halftime now as the Huskers are taking on Iowa,
- [00:00:07.240]and as always, we are very, very happy
- [00:00:10.230]to welcome in Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:12.290]And Chancellor, today we wrap up a memorable regular season.
- [00:00:16.190]What do you think of the team's resilience
- [00:00:17.880]to get through this very challenging year?
- [00:00:21.880]Well, Matt, just to get through the year we've had
- [00:00:25.708]speaks to a lot about resilience of the team,
- [00:00:29.857]and the conditions that we've operated under generally,
- [00:00:33.530]but especially in collegiate athletics,
- [00:00:35.790]and to be able to put the work in,
- [00:00:38.400]and the effort that's required by our players,
- [00:00:41.480]and by the coaches and the staff,
- [00:00:43.420]under the conditions we've had.
- [00:00:44.620]My hat is just off to them.
- [00:00:47.120]Every season, the team experiences ups and downs,
- [00:00:50.150]and you're always faced with some level of adversity,
- [00:00:52.540]but put COVID over top of that,
- [00:00:54.730]and we all know kind of what that means.
- [00:00:57.660]It's been a whole new level for every team,
- [00:01:01.450]including our women this year.
- [00:01:04.570]I'm kind of touched thinking back to Senior Day,
- [00:01:08.470]last Sunday or last weekend,
- [00:01:10.510]you know, when we had Senior Day,
- [00:01:12.860]and to have that happen,
- [00:01:14.890]with the game getting canceled right at the last minute,
- [00:01:18.470]but yet to see those women out having fun with one another
- [00:01:23.490]and doing shootarounds,
- [00:01:25.330]and to have credited Kate and Taylor
- [00:01:31.150]in the way that they did, it just my hats off to the team
- [00:01:36.030]for the year that they've had.
- [00:01:37.130]Great memorable performances
- [00:01:38.950]just since you and I talked last time,
- [00:01:41.090]is the being named Player of the Week honors.
- [00:01:45.170]I think we talked about the Big Ten honor
- [00:01:47.540]the last chance we had to visit,
- [00:01:48.770]but on the national level as well.
- [00:01:50.210]That's a big deal, and my hat's off to the team
- [00:01:53.589]in finishing the season
- [00:01:55.140]and looking forward to the tournament ahead.
- [00:01:58.520]Well, the university has had some recent news
- [00:02:01.830]recognizing Husker students are earning
- [00:02:04.580]nationally competitive fellowships
- [00:02:06.512]at a rate that exceeds that of students
- [00:02:08.751]at a few Ivy League schools.
- [00:02:10.650]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:02:13.257]Well, Matt, we have had good news
- [00:02:16.272]in recent weeks where the Fulbright program,
- [00:02:19.680]that's the US government's flagship International
- [00:02:22.859]Educational Exchange Program,
- [00:02:23.940]and it's an honor to be named a Fulbright scholar
- [00:02:27.840]by the US Department of State,
- [00:02:30.460]and we just found out recently that UNL
- [00:02:34.120]is again on the top producer list nationally,
- [00:02:39.160]of colleges and universities that produce
- [00:02:41.490]the most Fulbrights this past year
- [00:02:44.220]going into the year ahead for those Fulbright scholars.
- [00:02:47.360]We had 30 applicants from UNL to the Fulbright program.
- [00:02:51.850]16 of those 30 were named semi-finalists that are now
- [00:02:55.985]you know, going through that process
- [00:02:58.830]with 10 that were selected
- [00:03:00.900]for Fulbright Scholar awards this past year.
- [00:03:04.600]It puts us amongst the very top in a yield of application
- [00:03:09.270]to final awards against a very stiff competition,
- [00:03:13.860]and ahead of, as you mentioned, Yale, and Harvard,
- [00:03:17.300]and Columbia, University of Chicago, Cal Berkeley.
- [00:03:21.460]So very, very proud of that accomplishment.
- [00:03:24.290]This is a kind of a recurring thing.
- [00:03:27.730]We also were a top producer of student Fulbright awards
- [00:03:31.140]in 2019, in 2013, and 2012.
- [00:03:34.460]So great to see that back again this year.
- [00:03:38.480]The Fulbright's are selected
- [00:03:40.350]on the basis of their academic and professional achievement,
- [00:03:43.440]as well as their potential for leadership.
- [00:03:45.270]And many of these students who are selected
- [00:03:47.640]for Fulbright scholarships around the world,
- [00:03:50.470]go to teach English in other parts of the world.
- [00:03:53.740]Two of my interns in our own office here at UNL,
- [00:03:58.960]we work with a number of student interns in our office,
- [00:04:02.380]and two of our interns are amongst these Fulbright scholars,
- [00:04:06.080]one going to Colombia, country of Colombia,
- [00:04:09.290]and one going to Namibia, in Africa,
- [00:04:12.030]to teach English this next year.
- [00:04:14.670]So just great to see these results
- [00:04:18.150]in the Fulbright program, and to be again
- [00:04:21.040]amongst the very best universities in the country
- [00:04:24.230]in terms of yield of Fulbright Scholars this year.
- [00:04:28.320]Well, that is just tremendous information.
- [00:04:30.900]Chancellor, it's great talking with you again,
- [00:04:33.330]and hope you enjoy the second half, and as always thank you
- [00:04:36.460]for taking some time to be with us for the halftime.
- [00:04:39.730]Go Big Red, beat the Hawks.
- [00:04:41.700]Go Big Red.
- [00:04:42.533]That's chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:43.490]I'm Matt Cotney, we're at the half.
- [00:04:45.340]The Huskers in Iowa.
- [00:04:46.570]We'll have more halftime activities in a few moments.
