- [00:00:05.580]So welcome to another episode of Stretching Your Strengths in CEHS I'm Dr.
- [00:00:09.420]Paul Springer, the Associate Dean for Student Success. Today,
- [00:00:12.930]we're going to be meeting with Jim Benes.
- [00:00:14.580]Who's the Global Exchange Coordinator in CEHS to talk about some of the exciting
- [00:00:19.380]global experiences that were just recently announced.
- [00:00:22.590]Thanks for joining me today Jim.
- [00:00:24.800]Absolutely. Dr. Springer, nice to be with you.
- [00:00:26.890]So I'm really curious, how are global experiences different this year than in the past?
- [00:00:32.720]Good question. So I don't have to tell you or anybody else that
- [00:00:37.070]we're living in different times.
- [00:00:38.480]And so usually we have a nice cadre of faculty-led experiences,
- [00:00:42.110]where we go all over the world on study abroad experiences. However,
- [00:00:45.290]this year we're unable to offer those experiences.
- [00:00:48.110]So what we've done with the rest of the university and in conjunction with Ed
- [00:00:51.650]Abroad office is offering Global Experiences,
- [00:00:54.920]which is a mixture of virtual experiences,
- [00:00:57.470]but also some experiences that are in-person and virtual. And so there,
- [00:01:01.580]there summer courses that are offered this May, June, or July. So in the
- [00:01:05.480]first five weeks, the second five weeks or the pre-session in May.
- [00:01:08.930]And you can earn UNL credit while having an international or intercultural
- [00:01:12.440]experience.
- [00:01:13.430]Oh, that's amazing.
- [00:01:14.330]Can you tell us more about the five global experiences that were just announced
- [00:01:18.530]that will be offered this summer?
- [00:01:20.450]Absolutely.
- [00:01:21.110]So you can find out more information on the website that you see here,
- [00:01:25.130]but I'll just tell you about the different programs that we're offering for CEHS
- [00:01:28.550]majors or for anyone interested in taking courses in CEHS. Virtual Comparison
- [00:01:33.380]of the Cultural and Educational Perspectives between the US and Costa Rica,
- [00:01:37.430]Comparative Education, Cross-cultural Perspectives in Teaching, Exploring the
- [00:01:41.480]International Cuisines of Lincoln, Exploring Greece in Lincoln, and last,
- [00:01:45.860]but certainly not least The Exploration of Brazil,
- [00:01:48.560]The Impact of Systematic Racism on Families, Schools, and Communities taught by
- [00:01:53.180]Dr. Paul Springer.
- [00:01:55.400]Well, I mean, these programs sound pretty amazing.
- [00:01:58.190]I know that the faculty have been working really hard to develop something that
- [00:02:02.270]is really meaningful and will be a culturally immersive experience for our
- [00:02:06.110]students. But let's, let's ask the real question.
- [00:02:09.650]Can you talk about the costs for participating in these programs?
- [00:02:13.580]Good question. It's something that we're all we all think about. Like, Hey,
- [00:02:17.050]that sounds nice, but how much does it cost?
- [00:02:19.370]The good news is I love talking about this because the cost is essentially
- [00:02:23.810]free. So when you sign up for these programs
- [00:02:28.010]usually, you have to pay some sort of fee for a program cost
- [00:02:32.030]to an organization or perhaps for the study abroad experience. But these,
- [00:02:36.950]the Education Abroad office and CEHS are working together to make these
- [00:02:40.730]experiences free of cost to the students who can sign up for them.
- [00:02:44.810]That means that they're probably going to be hot-ticket items for the summer.
- [00:02:47.960]You will have to still pay for the UNL tuition and fees that are associated
- [00:02:51.590]with these educational credits. But as far as the program cost goes,
- [00:02:54.860]you'll be essentially waived when you enroll, but you have to enroll in them.
- [00:02:58.400]So I do encourage anyone interested to sign up as soon as they can.
- [00:03:02.130]Excellent. So, Jim,
- [00:03:03.240]I want to thank you for taking time talking about these programs with us.
- [00:03:07.020]If students want to get in touch with you, or if they have more questions,
- [00:03:10.650]how can they reach out?
- [00:03:12.600]They can always email me at jbenes@unl.edu
- [00:03:16.260]or they can follow me on my social media,
- [00:03:18.150]which is on Instagram as CEHS underscore global and Twitter @CEHS
- [00:03:22.950]underscore global.
- [00:03:23.940]And you can also just Google search or do a search in your favorite engine for
- [00:03:27.090]CEHS Global. And I also have a YouTube channel you can subscribe to.
- [00:03:31.590]Excellent. So thanks so much, Jim.
- [00:03:33.390]I hope students take advantage of this unique opportunity this summer. And
- [00:03:38.790]thank you again.
- [00:03:40.190]Thank you Dr. Springer, all the best.
- [00:03:41.970]Bye, everybody. See you this summer.
