- [00:00:00.310]The last thing I would like you to recognize
- [00:00:02.890]is that there's also a water quality benefit of manure.
- [00:00:06.447]And this often goes against kind of our typical thinking,
- [00:00:10.640]because you know, we've dealt with manure
- [00:00:13.550]in a way because it's a water quality problem.
- [00:00:18.210]But that usually is a result of over-application.
- [00:00:21.970]And what I'd like to suggest to you is, first of all,
- [00:00:25.670]whenever we see a benefit
- [00:00:27.440]such as what Mike has shared with us
- [00:00:29.240]in terms of soil quality,
- [00:00:30.840]there are water quality benefits
- [00:00:32.550]in terms of erosion and runoff, need to remind ourselves of.
- [00:00:37.460]We also learned in our discussion of nitrogen last week
- [00:00:41.280]because manure is like mother nature's
- [00:00:44.590]slow release form of nitrogen.
- [00:00:47.210]It's much less likely to leach on us.
- [00:00:50.010]So something we've been introduced to.
- [00:00:52.970]And then the last thing I always like to remind people
- [00:00:55.870]is that our livestock, folks,
- [00:00:57.660]really are our first, our original recyclers.
- [00:01:02.300]You think about it here in this picture up above,
- [00:01:05.930]we're moving carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus
- [00:01:09.570]from those animals to that manure pile.
- [00:01:13.580]From that manure pile out here to our crop land,
- [00:01:17.880]producing feeds, bringing those feeds back to those animals.
- [00:01:23.110]And we've created a recycling loop.
- [00:01:26.470]And whenever we can recycle nutrients in a watershed,
- [00:01:33.610]over importing commercial fertilizers,
- [00:01:37.810]there is a water quality benefit that results from that.
- [00:01:41.640]And it's the same as we recycle nitrates
- [00:01:44.890]that are in irrigation water,
- [00:01:47.310]or the nitrogen that is put in the,
- [00:01:50.420]that captured in the soil from a lagoon crop,
- [00:01:53.810]recycling local nutrients
- [00:01:56.340]is critical to protecting water quality.
- [00:01:59.760]So you may not see dollar value from this.
- [00:02:04.690]But as you're having a conversation
- [00:02:06.500]with some of your peers, or your neighbors
- [00:02:11.390]that have more of an urban perspective,
- [00:02:14.220]remind them that when managed correctly,
- [00:02:18.470]manure has significant benefits in terms of water quality.
- [00:02:24.210]So let's wrap this conversation up about the value,
- [00:02:28.330]there's value from the fertility side of this,
- [00:02:31.681]usually phosphorus being the most valuable part of it.
- [00:02:36.270]There is value from the soil health perspective,
- [00:02:40.270]and there's value to be gained
- [00:02:41.910]from an environmental perspective,
- [00:02:44.090]assuming that we're applying that manure at agronomic rates.
