- [00:00:05.255]Hello, I'm Ali Raymond, the Admissions Coordinator
- [00:00:08.760]for the Department of Animal Science at UNL.
- [00:00:11.530]In this role, I serve as a point of contact
- [00:00:13.550]for all students interested in our major.
- [00:00:16.540]I also serve as an academic advisor for the major.
- [00:00:19.440]In this role, I help guide students
- [00:00:21.060]through their academic programs
- [00:00:22.397]and ensure that students are pursuing their passion.
- [00:00:25.660]I have been working for the Animal Science Department
- [00:00:27.610]for nine and a half years,
- [00:00:29.060]am a UNL (inaudible) alum,
- [00:00:30.810]and I am passionate about helping students find their way.
- [00:00:35.662]Even though the animal science major is the largest
- [00:00:38.680]in (inaudible) at approximately 340 students,
- [00:00:42.130]you still receive the one-on-one attention
- [00:00:44.140]from faculty and staff through academic advising,
- [00:00:46.790]teaching of courses and labs,
- [00:00:48.167]and the advising of student clubs and teams.
- [00:00:50.800]It is important to us that we maintain that level
- [00:00:52.910]of personalization for our students
- [00:00:54.650]and we work hard to do so.
- [00:00:56.750]We also award approximately $80,000
- [00:00:58.425]in scholarships every fall,
- [00:01:00.270]and have an amazing facility on campus
- [00:01:02.200]where our students can go directly from the classroom
- [00:01:04.750]to a lab working hands-on with animals.
- [00:01:07.400]We will highlight different areas
- [00:01:08.740]of the facility later on in this video.
- [00:01:12.160]Hi, I'm Kelsey Loseke, a junior
- [00:01:14.260]Animal Science and Agriculture Economics double major
- [00:01:16.910]with a minor
- [00:01:17.743]in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship program.
- [00:01:20.750]I am currently serving as an Animal Science Ambassador
- [00:01:23.410]for the Animal Science Department.
- [00:01:24.950]And one of my best experiences is I'm currently
- [00:01:27.890]the Big Red Beef Show Chair
- [00:01:29.440]for the Block and Bridle Club.
- [00:01:31.410]I'm very passionate about this industry,
- [00:01:33.320]as well as this is giving me opportunities to network
- [00:01:35.716]within the beef industry and other ways, as well.
- [00:01:40.289]My biggest piece of advice
- [00:01:42.590]is to truly get to know your professors.
- [00:01:45.160]They are just as passionate about the content
- [00:01:47.340]that they're providing you as they are about their research
- [00:01:49.720]or other experiences, as well.
- [00:01:51.620]That way, you have that networking with them
- [00:01:54.150]that maybe we can bring you to a research project
- [00:01:56.270]or something of the sort.
- [00:01:58.490]Hi, I'm Kathlyn Hauxwell.
- [00:02:00.033]I am a junior in the Animal Science Department
- [00:02:02.670]with an option in Food Animal Production and Management.
- [00:02:06.050]I am also a minor in the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars.
- [00:02:10.350]Within the animal science and within the university,
- [00:02:12.900]I've been extremely involved
- [00:02:14.740]and one of my greatest pieces of advice is to say yes.
- [00:02:18.250]I know college may seem overwhelming,
- [00:02:21.150]but you'll never get to know the opportunities
- [00:02:23.500]to find in college and with other experiences
- [00:02:26.550]if you don't at least give it a shot.
- [00:02:28.790]One of my favorite opportunities has been able
- [00:02:31.360]to be involved heavily with an undergraduate research.
- [00:02:34.250]I have up to date done three swine projects,
- [00:02:38.450]as well as one ruminant nutrition project,
- [00:02:40.870]and it's connected me with lots of professors
- [00:02:42.950]and professionals within and without of the university.
- [00:02:45.960]I have been involved in several judging teams,
- [00:02:48.490]including the Horse Judging Team
- [00:02:50.200]and the Livestock Judging Team.
- [00:02:51.820]Not only have these helped me develop
- [00:02:54.650]my public speaking skills and not only have connected me
- [00:02:58.210]with a lot different people within the industry,
- [00:03:01.800]but I've also gotten to travel to many different places
- [00:03:04.360]to see some of the best stock in the nation.
- [00:03:06.800]Including going to Oklahoma City
- [00:03:08.540]for the Cattlemen's Congress
- [00:03:10.280]and going to the American Quarter Horse World Show,
- [00:03:13.520]the American Paint World Show,
- [00:03:15.510]and the AQHA Congress in Ohio.
- [00:03:20.170]So, getting to travel around, hang out with my friends,
- [00:03:23.120]and get to see quality livestock
- [00:03:25.070]is one of the greatest opportunities
- [00:03:27.050]within joining a judging team.
- [00:03:29.200]Hi, I'm Shaye Koester
- [00:03:30.840]and I'm a Junior Animal Science major
- [00:03:32.870]with the Food Animal Production Management option.
- [00:03:35.490]I also am obtaining minors
- [00:03:36.674]in the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars Program
- [00:03:39.920]and the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program.
- [00:03:43.600]My biggest advice to you would be to really
- [00:03:47.060]get to know the people you sit beside in class every day.
- [00:03:50.616]Don't be afraid to introduce yourself and say hi,
- [00:03:53.690]because when I came here,
- [00:03:55.180]I was from North Dakota and I didn't know a soul.
- [00:03:57.340]I can say that just from introducing myself,
- [00:03:59.540]I have met some of the best friends in my life
- [00:04:01.930]that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
- [00:04:03.700]I have no doubts about that.
- [00:04:05.800]I'd also say, make sure you join a club.
- [00:04:07.950]One of my greatest experiences
- [00:04:09.330]within the Animal Science Program is being the president
- [00:04:12.170]for the Block and Bridle Club.
- [00:04:13.770]It's truly a club that I'm passionate about
- [00:04:16.440]and have been able to put my passion to work
- [00:04:19.210]and create a difference and really see our members grow.
- [00:04:23.310]So with that,
- [00:04:24.150]remember to introduce yourself and get involved.
- [00:04:27.822]Hi guys, my name is Felicia Kenitzer.
- [00:04:29.817]I'm a Junior Animal Science student
- [00:04:31.602]with a minor in Agribusiness.
- [00:04:32.870]My biggest piece of advice
- [00:04:34.350]is to get out of your comfort zone.
- [00:04:35.890]Go do something that pushes you
- [00:04:37.370]both personally and professionally.
- [00:04:39.630]For example, I'm interning
- [00:04:40.970]with Merck Animal Health
- [00:04:42.470]down in Nashville, Tennessee this summer
- [00:04:44.120]as a field cattle sole representative.
- [00:04:46.300]This is a very outside of my comfort zone,
- [00:04:48.010]as I love Nebraska and want to live here
- [00:04:50.060]the rest of my life.
- [00:04:51.140]But I am very excited for the opportunity to go
- [00:04:53.030]and explore the beef industry outside of Nebraska
- [00:04:55.880]and to really hone in on those personal
- [00:04:57.910]and professional skills outside of the state.
- [00:05:00.560]My favorite part about being
- [00:05:01.530]a UNL animal science student
- [00:05:03.140]is actually a recent involvement
- [00:05:04.800]that I got involved with this last fall.
- [00:05:06.920]I am now an undergraduate research assistant
- [00:05:08.910]with the Bovine Reproductive Physiology lab here on campus.
- [00:05:12.030]One of my favorite tasks that I get to do
- [00:05:14.139]is that I get to collect blood samples
- [00:05:15.530]from a hundred heifers every week.
- [00:05:17.540]It's a great opportunity to not only work with cattle
- [00:05:20.010]which I love, but it's a great opportunity to hone
- [00:05:22.410]in on those cattle technical skills.
- [00:05:25.260]Hi, I'm Kelsey Loeske, a junior Animal Science major
- [00:05:28.387]and I'm gonna show you around the Animal Science Complex.
- [00:05:34.044](upbeat music)
- [00:05:54.010]Welcome to the meat science lab.
- [00:05:55.320]Let's go ahead and talk about it quick.
- [00:05:56.810]So, the animal science meat department
- [00:05:58.460]is actually a USDA certified facility.
- [00:06:00.980]So, it's a great way to integrate
- [00:06:02.170]all aspects of animal science.
- [00:06:03.920]We can go from raising the livestock to processing them
- [00:06:06.650]and then you can even have the opportunity
- [00:06:07.483]to purchase the meat in our on-campus meat store.
- [00:06:12.150]All right guys.
- [00:06:12.983]So, this is one of the classrooms
- [00:06:15.110]that we do a lot of our meat education classes in.
- [00:06:17.730]So, we have rail that we can run carcasses in through
- [00:06:22.890]and otherwise whether it comes to learning
- [00:06:25.250]about quality of young grades,
- [00:06:26.730]identifying specific cuts of meat,
- [00:06:28.490]all that stuff happens in this room.
- [00:06:33.550]In here is one of the largest lecture halls on campus.
- [00:06:36.750]One of two, it's B101,
- [00:06:38.740]it's the largest lecture hall in animal science.
- [00:06:41.490]A lot of your core classes for animal science
- [00:06:44.250]or even other classes will be in this room.
- [00:06:52.310]Also, this is one of the rooms where most of our clubs meet.
- [00:06:55.160]Block and Bridle, rodeo club, the equestrian team.
- [00:06:57.913]They all stop in here too.
- [00:07:00.854](inspiring music)
- [00:07:07.810]Welcome to the R.B Warren Arena.
- [00:07:09.730]This where the Equestrian team practices.
- [00:07:12.100]It's the indoor arena within the animal science complex.
- [00:07:14.815]It's heated.
- [00:07:16.230]It is not where the rodeo team practices,
- [00:07:18.510]but you will also have a few classes and labs in here.
- [00:07:21.860]So, you'll find your way here several times
- [00:07:24.330]throughout your college career.
- [00:07:26.070]And maybe if you're on the equestrian team
- [00:07:28.040]or involved in that aspect,
- [00:07:29.270]you'll probably find this as your second home.
- [00:07:45.030]Now we're in the back of the animal science department
- [00:07:47.520]where all the animals are housed.
- [00:07:49.310]This is one of the places on campus
- [00:07:50.840]that hires the most students.
- [00:07:53.120]You can feed.
- [00:07:53.980]You can take care of the animals.
- [00:07:55.300]You can be part of a research project,
- [00:07:57.390]anything like that as an undergrad.
- [00:07:59.430]This is one of the live animal labs.
- [00:08:01.490]So, whenever you're working on your animal handling skills
- [00:08:04.830]maybe prepping for a judging class
- [00:08:07.050]or just being involved with the animals
- [00:08:08.837]in the animal science department,
- [00:08:10.730]this is typically one of the rooms that we can have them in.
- [00:08:13.040]It has drainable floors, a bunch of desks and chairs.
- [00:08:16.890]So, we're able to get a lot of things done
- [00:08:18.730]and accomplished in this room, while keeping animals safe.
- [00:08:21.780]Opportunities outside of classes that students
- [00:08:23.903]have to get to know each other and really build that family
- [00:08:26.610]and community feeling that our program offers.
- [00:08:29.110]Through that there's Animal Science Ambassadors.
- [00:08:31.800]Your ambassadors are who are taking you
- [00:08:33.290]through this too are today.
- [00:08:34.460]And we have the opportunity to give tours
- [00:08:36.020]to prospective students and do fun projects like this.
- [00:08:39.650]We also have Block and Bridle,
- [00:08:41.330]which is the one of our largest clubs.
- [00:08:43.670]Block and Bridle is for anyone
- [00:08:44.980]who is interested in the livestock industry.
- [00:08:47.160]And then there's the meat science club,
- [00:08:49.050]stock dog club, animal behavior and welfare club.
- [00:08:51.920]Those are all amazing clubs to become involved
- [00:08:54.210]if you're interested those areas.
- [00:08:56.130]We also have SEECA, which is
- [00:08:58.020]Students for the Education and Exotic and Companion Animals.
- [00:09:01.610]So, if you're more interested on the companion animal side
- [00:09:04.250]that's a very involved club.
- [00:09:05.830]They even do a dog training session
- [00:09:08.070]which is a great fundraiser for them.
- [00:09:09.590]There's also the Spanish interest group.
- [00:09:11.650]If you would like to learn more about Spanish terms
- [00:09:16.110]within the animal science industry.
- [00:09:18.370]There's also the rodeo program.
- [00:09:19.920]Which consists of the rodeo team and the rodeo club.
- [00:09:23.120]So, even if you don't want to compete in rodeo,
- [00:09:25.890]you have the opportunity to be involved with the club
- [00:09:28.700]and help put on the rodeo
- [00:09:29.870]and participate in all the events that they do.
- [00:09:32.340]There are also judging teams, such as the livestock team,
- [00:09:35.280]the meats team, and the horse judging team.
- [00:09:37.360]In addition to that, there's the meat animal evaluation team
- [00:09:40.620]and the equestrian team.
- [00:09:42.140]So as you can tell, there are countless opportunities
- [00:09:44.810]for you as a student to become involved,
- [00:09:47.190]network, and make friends that will last a lifetime
- [00:09:50.403]Cattle handling facility.
- [00:09:51.520]This was modeled after Temple Grandin system,
- [00:09:54.610]keeping animals low stress when we're working them.
- [00:09:57.290]Behind me, you'll see some stocks
- [00:09:58.880]where we are able to have our own AI class for cattle.
- [00:10:03.500]And Dr. White will teach you how to AI
- [00:10:05.470]and to pick cattle in this class as well.
- [00:10:08.810]And also, whether it be in a lab
- [00:10:10.890]where we can run animals through
- [00:10:12.560]and get guano samples or other types of samples as well.
- [00:10:16.950]So this is the nutrition area of the research wing
- [00:10:21.290]and what they do here is they do
- [00:10:22.790]a lot of different feed studies,
- [00:10:24.620]where they actually feed the animals
- [00:10:26.420]what they're looking at,
- [00:10:27.380]and then they are able to take samples
- [00:10:29.950]and analyze what the feed is.
- [00:10:31.890]This is a great opportunity to get lots of experience.
- [00:10:34.430]I have a lot of friends and myself,
- [00:10:36.860]we work down here and you're able to get
- [00:10:39.350]a ton of research experience.
- [00:10:40.862]As well as basic animal handling experience.
- [00:10:44.370]And also, getting paid.
- [00:10:48.198]Behind me is where the poultry department is.
- [00:10:50.730]We're unable to give you a tour
- [00:10:51.890]of that due to bio-security reasons.
- [00:10:53.860]But if you are interested in poultry production
- [00:10:56.040]that is also an option for you to explore
- [00:10:58.450]within our animal science program.
- [00:11:00.184]We also are unable to fully show you the hog rooms too,
- [00:11:04.590]but that is also an area that was just back
- [00:11:07.360]in the area where Kathlyn showed you.
- [00:11:09.080]And so that is also an option for you.
- [00:11:12.580]This is the animal science hub.
- [00:11:14.690]This is a place where you as a student
- [00:11:16.850]are welcome to come study, eat lunch,
- [00:11:19.400]catch up with friends, take a nap on the couch.
- [00:11:22.400]You're also able to use the computer and printing services.
- [00:11:26.020]It's some of the cheapest printing you'll find on campus.
- [00:11:28.110]I know I always appreciated that.
- [00:11:30.020]Also, there's always an option to make coffee
- [00:11:33.140]and there's usually some free food and snacks up here.
- [00:11:36.600]So, you're gonna want to make sure
- [00:11:37.860]you make yourself familiar with the hub
- [00:11:39.920]and make it your home.
- [00:11:46.940]The animal science major is not only a major,
- [00:11:49.580]but it's an experience.
- [00:11:51.100]You can do all kinds of things such as
- [00:11:53.310]internships, judging teams, study tours, studying abroad,
- [00:11:58.000]undergrad, graduate, teaching assistantships,
- [00:12:01.270]undergraduate extension, education experiences,
- [00:12:05.030]and undergraduate research.
- [00:12:07.150]For example, I have done three internships
- [00:12:10.150]through my animal science major.
- [00:12:12.200]I have even gone on a couple study tours
- [00:12:15.390]out of state and in state.
- [00:12:17.440]This is just one of the many opportunities
- [00:12:18.553]you can do with animal science.
- [00:12:27.720]The animal science program includes one major,
- [00:12:30.380]two minors, and seven degree options.
- [00:12:35.800]The food animal production and management option
- [00:12:37.780]is designed for students interested in careers
- [00:12:40.280]related to the production and management of beef cattle,
- [00:12:43.130]dairy cattle, horses, poultry, and swine.
- [00:12:45.392]Although, students may emphasize a particular industry
- [00:12:48.260]or production system.
- [00:12:49.380]The option provides a balanced study of animal nutrition,
- [00:12:52.810]meat animal products, reproductive physiology,
- [00:12:55.720]breeding and genetics, and business management
- [00:12:58.040]of animal production systems.
- [00:13:02.770]The veterinary animal science option is designed
- [00:13:04.870]for students planning a career in veterinary medicine
- [00:13:06.950]and provides for completion of pre-veterinary
- [00:13:08.970]course requirements for the application
- [00:13:10.593]to the joint University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:13:13.510]Iowa State University program
- [00:13:15.610]for the Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine Degree.
- [00:13:17.920]However, it can easily be adapted
- [00:13:19.920]to meet specific requirements for other colleges
- [00:13:22.810]of veterinary medicine.
- [00:13:24.290]Courses in animal management, nutrition,
- [00:13:26.320]physiology and related areas
- [00:13:27.910]compliment the foundational science courses

- [00:16:09.220]One thing to remember,
- [00:16:10.312]is that you can start out in one of these option areas,
- [00:16:13.150]but if you think you'd liked to switch
- [00:16:15.050]to a different option area,
- [00:16:16.070]because you'd like it better, that's no problem.
- [00:16:18.120]All you have to do is let your advisor know
- [00:16:20.200]and they'll make the switch for you.
- [00:16:24.380]Minors are a great way for students
- [00:16:26.050]to diversify their education,
- [00:16:28.770]and take some courses outside of their major area.
- [00:16:31.600]They're also a good way for students
- [00:16:32.900]who have more than one interest area
- [00:16:34.870]to still take classes in that area of interest
- [00:16:36.700]without having to commit to a second major.
- [00:16:39.430]Minors are generally 18 credit hours.
- [00:16:41.700]We offer two minors through our program.
- [00:16:44.060]The general animal science minor,
- [00:16:45.440]which is 12 or 18 credit hours.
- [00:16:47.940]And the Nebraska beef industry scholars minor.
- [00:16:50.870]The general animal science minor is
- [00:16:52.390]for any student majoring in anything besides animal science.
- [00:16:56.400]The beef scholars minor is for any major,
- [00:16:58.530]including students who are majoring in animal science.
- [00:17:02.570]If you'd like to declare a minor just let your advisor know
- [00:17:05.350]and they can help help you get it added to your program.
- [00:17:09.760]So now that you know
- [00:17:10.920]all about the animal science major
- [00:17:12.330]and what we have to offer, what's next?
- [00:17:14.740]Here are some of my recommendations,
- [00:17:17.140]take upper level math and science
- [00:17:18.910]while you're in high school.
- [00:17:20.740]This will lay a really good foundation
- [00:17:22.700]for the types of classes that you're going to see
- [00:17:25.420]when you come to UNL.
- [00:17:26.780]As a science major,
- [00:17:28.320]our students have to take quite a bit
- [00:17:29.630]of biology and chemistry.
- [00:17:31.210]And math is a foundational class for that.
- [00:17:33.890]Also, if you take biology and chemistry in high school
- [00:17:36.640]then college won't be the first time
- [00:17:38.840]you see those types of courses.
- [00:17:40.270]So, prepare while you're in high school.
- [00:17:42.810]So, that it's an easier transition
- [00:17:45.110]with those types of classes when you come to college.
- [00:17:47.770]If you plan to take any dual credit courses,
- [00:17:50.800]through a community college or another four-year institution
- [00:17:53.540]touch base with me before before you decide
- [00:17:56.880]to take those classes,
- [00:17:58.410]because I can help make sure
- [00:17:59.720]that they're going to transfer directly
- [00:18:02.170]into our major versus being a free elective.
- [00:18:04.790]Free electives are fine, but you only need so many.
- [00:18:07.160]So, if you can take some classes that count directly
- [00:18:09.920]towards our general education requirements,
- [00:18:11.560]that will help you out.
- [00:18:13.690]Also, be sure to schedule a campus visit.
- [00:18:16.460]You can do this by visiting admissions.unl.edu/visit.
- [00:18:21.050]You can also reach out to me
- [00:18:22.090]and I can help you get that scheduled as well,
- [00:18:26.490]but it's important to get to campus
- [00:18:28.330]and see what it's like to actually be a student at UNL
- [00:18:32.860]and visit one-on-one with some different experts
- [00:18:36.660]here in the college.
- [00:18:39.050]Be sure to follow us on social, if you haven't already.

- [00:18:54.930]So follow us on there if you haven't already.
- [00:18:58.060]Also, be sure to reach out to me
- [00:18:59.260]if you have any questions at all.

- [00:19:20.230]of the best training available for students interested
- [00:19:22.610]in all aspects of the animal sciences.
- [00:19:25.010]From small rural Nebraska towns to large Metro areas.
- [00:19:28.750]Our students come from diverse backgrounds,
- [00:19:30.840]but have one thing in common.
- [00:19:32.540]They are passionate about animals
- [00:19:34.260]and want to use that passion to make an impact on the world.
- [00:19:38.349]Whether you are interested in livestock production,
- [00:19:40.790]meat science, equine, business, biology,
- [00:19:44.210]companion or exotic animals,

- [00:19:47.700]or another professional school.
- [00:19:49.080]We are here to help you grow and provide you
- [00:19:51.440]with connections to co-create your path.
