- [00:00:00.290]Welcome back, everybody,
- [00:00:01.160]to Brunch With the Big Red.
- [00:00:02.510]That's right, the Huskers facing Minnesota,
- [00:00:04.810]the rematch, but hey, before we play this one,
- [00:00:07.620]we have a very special guest,
- [00:00:08.730]the chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:11.940]our flagship university in this great state.
- [00:00:14.070]Chancellor Ronnie Green visiting with us.
- [00:00:15.820]Chancellor, how are you, sir?
- [00:00:17.842]I'm great, John.
- [00:00:18.800]It's great to be with you.
- [00:00:20.150]Well, recently the state learned some good news.
- [00:00:22.650]The entire NCAA volleyball tournament
- [00:00:26.180]will take place in the city of Omaha.
- [00:00:28.670]Your thoughts?
- [00:00:30.600]Well, you know it's gonna be a little different
- [00:00:32.650]to have all of the teams in one place
- [00:00:34.970]and playing through a tournament in that way,
- [00:00:36.670]but as we've come to expect,
- [00:00:38.880]everything's different this year,
- [00:00:41.040]so I'm very excited about the fact
- [00:00:43.780]that the NCAA volleyball tournament will in its entirety
- [00:00:48.670]will be played in Omaha.
- [00:00:50.230]As John our coach said,
- [00:00:52.647]"Omaha has proven time and time again
- [00:00:55.247]"to be one of the best host cities
- [00:00:56.777]"for major sporting events."
- [00:00:58.430]They were the College World Series',
- [00:00:59.970]as we know, long-time home,
- [00:01:03.440]there in the new venue in more recent years,
- [00:01:05.870]the U.S. Olympics swim trials,
- [00:01:08.390]NCAA championships in the past,
- [00:01:11.390]including some great ones we can remember at Nebraska.
- [00:01:15.610]They always do a phenomenal job
- [00:01:17.820]so I have no doubt that all of the tournament teams
- [00:01:21.850]will have a great experience there,
- [00:01:23.970]and of course we fully expect that our Huskers
- [00:01:28.210]will plan to be there and be there
- [00:01:31.240]through the entirety of the tournament,
- [00:01:32.795]hopefully for a great run.
- [00:01:34.137]And Chancellor, this past Tuesday
- [00:01:35.980]you delivered remotely your one-hour
- [00:01:39.150]State of the University address
- [00:01:41.210]and in that you highlighted seven grand challenges
- [00:01:44.440]or areas the university wants to focus on
- [00:01:46.910]in research and creative activity.
- [00:01:49.340]What more can you tell us about these
- [00:01:50.470]seven grand challenges?
- [00:01:52.740]Well, John, over the past couple of years,
- [00:01:57.990]you would remember that we have gone
- [00:02:00.080]through a visioning process for UNL
- [00:02:02.560]back in 2019, 2018 and 2019,
- [00:02:06.390]when we were preparing to celebrate
- [00:02:08.970]our 150th anniversary year.
- [00:02:11.820]We went through a process called N150
- [00:02:15.350]that looked out long-term,
- [00:02:17.170]what did we aspire to be at UNL over the next 25 years
- [00:02:21.450]in higher education?
- [00:02:22.970]And then last year in the same State
- [00:02:25.977]of the University address,
- [00:02:27.860]we revealed our first five-year strategic plan,
- [00:02:31.449]what we call and refer to as N2025 for the university
- [00:02:36.443]in leading that vision or in achieving that N150 vision,
- [00:02:41.440]and part of that calls for the university
- [00:02:45.040]to focus its research and scholarship efforts
- [00:02:48.106]not exclusively, but heavily, around grand challenge areas
- [00:02:53.920]that are important to Nebraska and important to the world.
- [00:02:57.090]And today we are now in the process,
- [00:03:02.610]as I said last week in the State of Our University,
- [00:03:05.700]of launching these seven grand challenge areas
- [00:03:09.440]for those research and scholarship areas.
- [00:03:12.680]So there are big problems in those seven.
- [00:03:17.960]There are four that are areas that UNL
- [00:03:21.810]has been known in internationally for some time,
- [00:03:25.770]including sustainable water and food security.
- [00:03:28.330]We're one of the leading institutions in the world
- [00:03:31.750]in that area and that area continues
- [00:03:34.450]to be even more important as we move forward.
- [00:03:37.430]Early childhood education and development,
- [00:03:39.460]another area that we have long had international standing in
- [00:03:44.710]in children, think three to eight years of age,
- [00:03:48.560]really in that early childhood development arena,
- [00:03:52.850]in climate change mitigation and resilience,
- [00:03:55.669]an area that we also have had leadership in for some time,
- [00:04:00.000]think things like the National Drought Mitigation Center
- [00:04:02.920]that has been a long-standing national resource
- [00:04:06.150]for the U.S. and located here at Nebraska,
- [00:04:10.280]but this issue of climate change
- [00:04:12.240]that has some sense of urgency associated with it,
- [00:04:14.970]for us to develop mitigation and resilience capabilities
- [00:04:19.010]and in quantum science and engineering.
- [00:04:21.220]Our physics and quantum science program here
- [00:04:25.120]has been an international leader for a long time.
- [00:04:27.820]A lot of people don't recognize that,
- [00:04:30.110]but physics here is a big deal
- [00:04:32.400]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:04:34.230]and we see great opportunities ahead
- [00:04:37.240]in this next revolution of quantum science and engineering,
- [00:04:41.010]and then three areas that are areas
- [00:04:43.180]that are critically important as we see time moving forward
- [00:04:48.380]add to those other four in health equity,
- [00:04:52.260]in anti-racism and racial equity,
- [00:04:55.200]and in science and technology literacy for society.
- [00:04:59.480]All seven of these grand challenge areas
- [00:05:02.510]being ones that are important to Nebraska and the world
- [00:05:05.927]and that we intend to focus on
- [00:05:08.720]over the time ahead in the institution
- [00:05:11.220]with strategic investment.
- [00:05:12.490]So great, great unveiling of that last week
- [00:05:16.430]to move those grand challenges forward in the institution
- [00:05:20.330]and it was even in the time of COVID,
- [00:05:23.262]was great fun to really think about
- [00:05:26.480]all that the university is accomplishing with our people
- [00:05:30.800]and our programs and our anti-apartheid mission.
- [00:05:33.700]Chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:05:34.570]chancellor of University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:05:35.920]thank you so much, sir, for your time today.
- [00:05:38.300]You bet and go Big Red!
- [00:05:40.210]Minnesota's a good volleyball team
- [00:05:42.220]so looking for a great result tonight.
- [00:05:45.610]All right, that's the chancellor
- [00:05:46.990]and when we continue, the head coach of the Huskers,
- [00:05:49.370]John Cook in the wings,
- [00:05:50.490]and you're listening to Big Red Volleyball.
