- [00:00:00.960]Hello, my name is Justina Clark,
- [00:00:03.020]and I'm the Director of Undergraduate Research at UNL.
- [00:00:06.610]And I am Lisa Rohde
- [00:00:07.970]and I'm the Associate Director
- [00:00:09.380]of Teaching and Research Development
- [00:00:10.920]in the Office of Graduate Studies at UNL.
- [00:00:14.000]This video tutorial will provide you information
- [00:00:17.130]and guidance on creating your research video presentation
- [00:00:20.690]for the 2021 Nebraska Student Research Days event.
- [00:00:24.570]We will cover the rationale for creating a research video,
- [00:00:27.250]provide length and format guidelines,
- [00:00:29.540]share recommended software for creating your video,
- [00:00:32.160]and show you how to upload
- [00:00:33.470]your completed video to MediaHub.
- [00:00:35.660]We will also explain what you can expect
- [00:00:37.660]for the competition portion of student research days.
- [00:00:43.630]The restrictions for large, on-campus gatherings
- [00:00:45.880]has provided us with the chance to consider new
- [00:00:48.190]and innovative ways to share our research
- [00:00:50.070]and creative activities.
- [00:00:51.800]By creating a video presentation,
- [00:00:53.620]your research outcomes will now be
- [00:00:55.170]more accessible than ever before.
- [00:00:57.500]Unlike a traditional poster session
- [00:00:59.180]where people have to be at a specific location
- [00:01:01.350]at a specific time to see your poster,
- [00:01:03.720]a video presentation can reach a worldwide audience.
- [00:01:07.250]You can also generate interest in your research
- [00:01:09.180]from experts to amateurs and everyone in between.
- [00:01:12.180]There's also greater accessibility with videos
- [00:01:14.570]where you can include closed captions
- [00:01:16.950]and your audience can pause
- [00:01:18.170]and rewatch sections at their convenience.
- [00:01:21.560]Some of you may have already attended a virtual regional
- [00:01:23.840]or national conference in the past year.
- [00:01:25.910]So, you've seen that videos are now a standard format
- [00:01:28.350]for presenting research and creative activities.
- [00:01:31.080]Participation in Student Research Days
- [00:01:32.810]gives you valuable practice and experience
- [00:01:34.710]in creating and sharing your video.
- [00:01:37.090]Lastly, the video format allows for greater creativity.
- [00:01:40.500]You are not constrained by the print poster format,
- [00:01:43.250]allowing you to make better use of visuals and images.
- [00:01:46.430]You can include short video clips, models, and animations.
- [00:01:50.530]And this is your opportunity to think outside the box
- [00:01:52.940]on how you'd like to share your research
- [00:01:54.600]or creative activity.
- [00:01:59.270]Here you'll see the suggested length
- [00:02:01.030]and format for your video.
- [00:02:02.910]We expect your video presentation to be
- [00:02:04.890]between five and eight minutes in length.
- [00:02:07.130]Please keep your presentation to the time limit.
- [00:02:09.640]Start your video by briefly introducing yourself
- [00:02:12.210]then move into your project description.
- [00:02:14.660]We recommend using this formula
- [00:02:16.320]for an effective presentation
- [00:02:17.887]and we strongly encourage the use of figures
- [00:02:20.230]and images as they are important for memory and learning.
- [00:02:23.800]You have a few options for the format of your video.
- [00:02:26.410]You can choose to create a traditional poster
- [00:02:28.760]then walk us through the poster on video
- [00:02:30.920]and address each of the elements.
- [00:02:33.110]You can create a slidedeck
- [00:02:34.520]and share your research like a class presentation.
- [00:02:37.260]We also welcome a film-style presentation
- [00:02:39.920]where you share your research
- [00:02:40.920]or creative activity in a narrative format.
- [00:02:43.730]As long as you address these elements here,
- [00:02:45.970]the format is up to you.
- [00:02:47.830]And you can visit the 2020 virtual symposium,
- [00:02:50.660]which is at MediaHub channel 38718
- [00:02:53.900]to see examples of all these formats.
- [00:02:59.210]We strongly encourage you to use VidGrid
- [00:03:01.270]to create your video.
- [00:03:02.810]We find it the easiest and most intuitive program to use
- [00:03:06.130]and VidGrid will close caption your video for free.
- [00:03:09.290]Closed captioning is required for your video
- [00:03:11.730]when it is uploaded to MediaHub.
- [00:03:13.980]However, you can use Zoom, PowerPoint,
- [00:03:16.410]or another service of your choice if you prefer.
- [00:03:19.190]These GoURLs will take you to tutorials
- [00:03:22.670]for using each of these services.
- [00:03:28.470]When using VidGrid, it's very easy to get started.
- [00:03:31.970]So, you will log in at the GoURL provided on the screen
- [00:03:36.450]and you'll use what they call the Enterprise Login
- [00:03:38.740]since UNL has accounts for all the students, faculty,
- [00:03:43.050]and staff who are a part of the campus community.
- [00:03:46.410]You log in using your UNL email address and password,
- [00:03:49.710]much like you would for Canvas or Vox
- [00:03:52.260]or any other UNL service.
- [00:03:55.140]When you first log in,
- [00:03:56.240]one of the things that you will have to do initially
- [00:03:59.020]will be downloading the recorder.
- [00:04:02.340]In the upper left corner of your screen,
- [00:04:04.670]you will see something that looks like what's
- [00:04:06.580]on the screen right now with that blue record button.
- [00:04:09.470]As soon as you click that record button,
- [00:04:11.540]it will download a little recorder to your computer
- [00:04:15.650]and it takes less than a minute to do so,
- [00:04:17.850]but it just allows you to use the software effectively.
- [00:04:24.680]So, when you're using the VidGrid to record,
- [00:04:28.060]a few things to keep in mind.
- [00:04:30.750]The first is that we recommend
- [00:04:32.700]that you resize to record part
- [00:04:35.330]of your screen when you're recording.
- [00:04:37.160]So, you'll notice in this image
- [00:04:39.270]that there is a gray box around the actual slide itself
- [00:04:45.660]and that is because I resized the screen
- [00:04:47.730]so that it's only recording that slide.
- [00:04:50.290]And that means that
- [00:04:51.123]if you have notes underneath your PowerPoint,
- [00:04:53.560]you can view those notes
- [00:04:54.950]at the same time that you're recording.
- [00:04:57.350]And that gray box
- [00:04:58.470]in the middle of the PowerPoint will disappear
- [00:05:00.870]as soon as you start pressing record.
- [00:05:04.080]One of the other things to keep in mind,
- [00:05:05.530]if you should wish to have a speaker thumbnail,
- [00:05:08.300]a little video of yourself playing in one of the corners,
- [00:05:11.400]you can easily do that with VidGrid.
- [00:05:14.340]It's just a matter of selecting
- [00:05:17.150]in the control panel at the bottom
- [00:05:18.700]that you want it to be recording
- [00:05:20.800]both the webcam and the screen record
- [00:05:25.660]of what's going on on your screen.
- [00:05:29.660]It can be very valuable to have a speaker thumbnail,
- [00:05:33.840]especially if you're a very enthusiastic speaker
- [00:05:36.160]so people can see your enthusiasm,
- [00:05:38.370]but we also recognize
- [00:05:39.480]that not everyone may be comfortable with that.
- [00:05:41.470]So, it is not required to have a speaker thumbnail
- [00:05:43.990]if you are not comfortable having
- [00:05:45.880]that as part of your video
- [00:05:47.250]or it would be problematic in your presentation.
- [00:05:50.760]So, that is ultimately up to you.
- [00:05:52.580]The other thing that I wanna note is you'll notice
- [00:05:54.660]that the control panel, when I rearranged the screen,
- [00:05:57.670]is underneath the image so it's hidden.
- [00:06:01.310]If for some reason you are recording the entire screen,
- [00:06:03.760]make sure to minimize the control panel
- [00:06:05.470]so that it doesn't show up on your video.
- [00:06:12.940]The next two things that you might need to do
- [00:06:15.200]in VidGrid would be editing your video
- [00:06:18.390]or creating closed captions.
- [00:06:21.110]To edit when on the initial VidGrid page
- [00:06:26.150]of all of your recorded videos,
- [00:06:27.850]there'll be an option when you right click to edit video.
- [00:06:30.900]This will also be an option when you first record it,
- [00:06:34.040]there'll be a little scissors that'll allow you to edit
- [00:06:37.360]if you want to cut off a couple of seconds at the beginning,
- [00:06:41.140]or a couple of seconds at the end, or remove a couple of ums
- [00:06:45.030]or places where you might've stumbled over your words.
- [00:06:48.860]And it's very easy to edit as need be.
- [00:06:53.090]You'll also be creating some closed captions.
- [00:06:55.800]VidGrid makes this very easy to do.
- [00:06:58.580]When you click request captions,
- [00:07:00.870]you'll get a screen like the one on this PowerPoint.
- [00:07:05.410]We'll ask that you ask for professional captions.
- [00:07:08.470]This means that it's being done
- [00:07:09.540]by a person rather than the machine captions.
- [00:07:12.640]It tends to be a little bit more accurate.
- [00:07:14.990]Both of the options are completely free to you
- [00:07:17.410]so you're welcome to use either.
- [00:07:19.770]Professional captions are often done within a day,
- [00:07:23.890]sometimes within a few hours.
- [00:07:25.570]So, it's a very quick process either way.
- [00:07:32.950]When preparing for your presentation,
- [00:07:34.960]we suggest preparing a script that will help you
- [00:07:37.720]with timing, reduce your stumbling over words,
- [00:07:40.900]and will ensure that everything you want to address
- [00:07:43.010]is included in your presentation.
- [00:07:45.250]If you aren't using a thumbnail,
- [00:07:47.340]it will be easier to read directly from a script.
- [00:07:50.370]But whether you read it directly or prepare bullet points,
- [00:07:52.960]we strongly encourage you to carefully prepare
- [00:07:55.610]what you are going to say.
- [00:07:57.570]Please be sure to adhere to the time limit.
- [00:08:00.010]If you type your script, the rule of thumb is
- [00:08:02.300]that a double spaced typed page
- [00:08:04.300]will take about two minutes to read.
- [00:08:06.690]Also, consider that not everyone watching your video
- [00:08:09.180]will be an expert or even from your field or discipline.
- [00:08:12.150]Whenever possible use accessible language
- [00:08:14.520]to make your research clear to a larger audience.
- [00:08:17.590]If you do decide to include an active speaker thumbnail,
- [00:08:20.640]think about lighting and sound
- [00:08:22.050]when choosing where to record your video.
- [00:08:24.510]Natural light or front-facing light is the best
- [00:08:27.590]and try to find a space that is quiet
- [00:08:29.370]and free from distraction.
- [00:08:31.260]In any case, you may need to notify others
- [00:08:33.460]in your residence that you'll be recording
- [00:08:35.350]so they can be respectful of your needs.
- [00:08:38.740]Next, I'm going to take you through a quick walkthrough
- [00:08:41.410]of how to use MediaHub, where you will upload your video.
- [00:08:51.310]To start, after you've created your video in VidGrid,
- [00:08:55.270]it should show up here in My Grid.
- [00:08:57.600]I am actually going to go to Shared With Me
- [00:08:59.400]because I'm using a video that Lisa prepared,
- [00:09:02.500]but just want to show you where that will be.
- [00:09:04.750]You will want to go to your video, hit the icons here
- [00:09:09.250]and the first option will be that you need
- [00:09:11.210]to actually download this video.
- [00:09:13.960]So, click Download and it'll save in your downloads
- [00:09:16.630]or wherever you choose to do so.
- [00:09:18.380]I've already done that so I'm not going to do that now.
- [00:09:21.439]Then next, you will go to is Request Captions.
- [00:09:25.890]This is where you can download the transcript
- [00:09:28.460]of the captions that have been prepared
- [00:09:30.560]through VidGrid for you.
- [00:09:32.420]You will select this option here that says Download caption.
- [00:09:35.970]I have already also done that
- [00:09:37.340]so I'm not going to do that again,
- [00:09:39.010]but I'm just telling you now
- [00:09:40.010]so that you're aware of where that is.
- [00:09:42.450]Once you have downloaded your video and your captions,
- [00:09:45.060]now go to MediaHub.
- [00:09:49.770]When you go to the main,
- [00:09:51.100]I'm gonna take you back to the main MediaHub page.
- [00:09:55.520]Oh, sorry about that.
- [00:09:56.400]Actually, I'll do this really quick.
- [00:10:01.820]You'll go to MediaHub, then you will click Manage Media.
- [00:10:06.580]Here is where you will begin, you will upload your video.
- [00:10:09.840]When you register for their research fair,
- [00:10:12.210]we will add you as a user
- [00:10:14.140]for the Nebraska Student Research Days 2021.
- [00:10:18.080]So, if you go to upload your video
- [00:10:19.980]and you do not see this showing up in your channels,
- [00:10:22.500]please let myself or Lisa know and we'll make sure
- [00:10:25.070]that that is there for you.
- [00:10:27.450]To upload your media it's quite simple.
- [00:10:29.510]I'm gonna hit Add Media.
- [00:10:31.620]Here is Lisa's video, gonna upload that there.
- [00:10:35.340]While it is doing that, I'm gonna fill in these fields.
- [00:10:38.230]I'm just gonna select Test for now,
- [00:10:40.120]but we would encourage you to use your presentation title
- [00:10:43.640]for your title, your name here for the author,
- [00:10:46.830]a brief description of your research video.
- [00:10:52.250]The privacy setting must be set on Public.
- [00:10:54.800]And then you'll select Student Research Days 2021
- [00:10:58.350]as the channel where you'd like for this video to be.
- [00:11:01.120]The next step is add captions.
- [00:11:12.715]Hm?
- [00:11:13.720]Oh, it's requiring me to put in a description.
- [00:11:15.450]I'm just gonna put test here.
- [00:11:16.650]See, we're learning together.
- [00:11:18.860]Next, Add Captions.
- [00:11:22.140]There are two options for adding captions to your video.
- [00:11:26.010]One is that you can order captions
- [00:11:28.010]with a cost object number.
- [00:11:29.950]That would be a cost object provided to you
- [00:11:32.330]by your research faculty advisor.
- [00:11:34.640]Please note that UCARE, nor graduate studies,
- [00:11:38.110]will provide the cost object for captioning your video.
- [00:11:42.160]But you can see this as an option
- [00:11:43.700]and it makes it a little faster
- [00:11:45.130]if your faculty member can provide that for you.
- [00:11:47.710]But if not, there is a free option as well
- [00:11:50.390]and that is self captioning through Amara.
- [00:11:53.260]While my video is optimizing,
- [00:11:55.020]I'm going to go ahead and open Amara in a new tab.
- [00:12:01.590]I have already logged in to my account,
- [00:12:03.960]but here, at this option right here,
- [00:12:06.180]you would see something that says Sign Up.
- [00:12:08.420]So, go ahead and create an Amara account now
- [00:12:11.600]and log into that account that way Amara is already active
- [00:12:15.500]for when you're ready to pull over your video from MediaHub.
- [00:12:18.900]So, my account is ready.
- [00:12:20.850]I'm gonna go back to MediaHub.
- [00:12:24.520]And once my video is done optimizing, there it is.
- [00:12:28.280]It says your video is prepared.
- [00:12:31.300]I'm going to reload this page.
- [00:12:37.980]Now I'm going to go to Edit Captions On amara.
- [00:12:45.180]So, I see the time is three minutes, 32 seconds,
- [00:12:47.920]which was the same time as my other videos
- [00:12:49.820]so I'm confident this is the correct video.
- [00:12:52.350]I'm going to click Add or Edit subtitles.
- [00:12:55.740]I'm gonna select English as the language spoken in the video
- [00:12:59.790]and English as the language
- [00:13:01.964]that the subtitle language should be in and then click Add.
- [00:13:07.940]This is a subtitle editor.
- [00:13:10.450]If you want, you can self type,
- [00:13:12.350]but we strongly encourage you just
- [00:13:13.900]to upload the subtitles instead.
- [00:13:16.010]So, I'll click here.
- [00:13:17.740]I will go to this Subtitles tool
- [00:13:21.150]and I will click Upload subtitles.
- [00:13:24.480]Now I'm going to Browse and find
- [00:13:26.590]where I had previously saved the subtitles
- [00:13:29.100]that I had downloaded from VidGrid,
- [00:13:32.310]which I had saved in this downloads folder
- [00:13:34.430]and it's a dot VTT file.
- [00:13:37.700]I'm gonna click Open and then Upload.
- [00:13:44.200]So, now this tutorial sort of automatically defaults
- [00:13:46.820]unless you click this, Please go away.
- [00:13:49.590]Now, we can see that the subtitles have come in
- [00:13:53.210]and this edit bar will let you move your captions
- [00:13:56.150]if they need to be a little earlier or later in the video.
- [00:13:58.920]I'm gonna do a quick test just to see how it's looking.
- [00:14:03.070]Hi everyone and welcome
- [00:14:04.670]to the Institute for International TAs.
- [00:14:07.250]So, it appears that the syncing is working well,
- [00:14:09.530]but we would encourage you to watch the entire video.
- [00:14:12.130]And if you need to, you can just literally grab these
- [00:14:14.920]and move them forward or ahead in the time
- [00:14:17.600]to make sure that the captions show up
- [00:14:19.080]at the correct time when it's being spoken on the video.
